This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of an ultrafast laser written Er-doped chalcogenide glass buried waveguide amplifier; Er-doped GeGaS glass has been synthesized by the vacuum sealed melt quenching technique. Waveguides have been fabricated inside the 4 mm long sample by direct ultrafast laser writing. The total passive fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 2.58 +/- 0.02 dB at 1600 nm, including a propagation loss of 1.6 +/- 0.3 dB. Active characterization shows a relative gain of 2.524 +/- 0.002 dB/cm and 1.359 +/- 0.005 dB/cm at 1541 nm and 1550 nm respectively, for a pump power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm. In this work, we synthesized bulk amorphous GeGaS glass by conventional melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of the glass is confirmed using X-ray diffraction. We fabricated the channel waveguides on this glass using the ultrafast laser inscription technique. The waveguides are written on this glass 100 mu m below the surface of the glass with a separation of 50 ae m by focusing the laser beam into the material using 0.67 NA lens. The laser parameters are set to 350 fs pulse duration at 100 KHz repetition rate. A range of writing energies with translation speeds 1 mm/s, 2 mm/s, 3 mm/s and 4 mm/s were investigated. After fabrication the waveguides facets were ground and polished to the optical quality to remove any tapering of the waveguide close to the edges. We characterized the loss measurement by butt coupling method and the mode field image of the waveguides has been captured to compare with the mode field image of fibers. Also we compared the asymmetry in the shape of the waveguide and its photo structural change using Raman spectra.

We report here, a finite difference thermal diffusion (FDTD) model for controlling the cross-section and the guiding nature of the buried channel waveguides fabricated on GeGaS bulk glasses using the direct laser writing technique. Optimization of the laser parameters for guiding at wavelength 1550 nm is done experimentally and compared with the theoretical values estimated by FDTD model. The mode field diameter (MFD) between 5.294 mu m and 24.706 mu m were attained by suitable selection of writing speed (1mm/s to 4 mm/s) and pulse energy (623 nJ to 806 nJ) of the laser at a fixed repletion rate of 100 kHz. Transition from single-mode to multi-mode waveguide is observed at pulse energy 806nJ as a consequence of heat accumulation. The thermal diffusion model fits well for single-mode waveguides with the exception of multi-mode waveguides.

The present study discusses the photosensitivity of GeS2 chalcogenide glass in response to irradiation with femtosecond pulses at 1047 nm. Bulk GeS2 glasses are prepared by conventional melt quenching technique and the amorphous nature of the glass is confirmed using X-ray diffraction. Ultrafast laser inscription technique is used to fabricate the straight channel waveguides in the glass. Single scan and multi scan waveguides are inscribed in GeS2 glasses of length 0.65 cm using a master oscillator power amplifier Yb doped fiber laser (IMRA mu jewel D400) with different pulse energy and translation speed. Diameters of the inscribed waveguides are measured and its dependence on the inscription parameters such as translation speed and pulse energy is studied. Butt coupling method is used to characterize the loss measurement of the inscribed optical waveguides. The mode field image of the waveguides is captured using CCD camera and compared with the mode field image of a standard SMF-28 fibers.

Recent observation of n-type conduction in amorphous Ge20Ss_xBix at large bismuth concentrations (x = 11), which otherwise shows p-type conduction, has aroused considerable interest in the international scientific community [1]. The mechanism of such impurity incorporation in a germanium chalcogenide glass is not understood and is a topic of current interest. In our recent publications [2-10] we have brought to light some hitherto unknown and interesting features of bismuth dopants in chalcogen-rich Ge-X (X -- S, Se) glassy compositions. In this communication we present our new results of investigations on vitreous semiconductors Ge20S80 Bi using electron microscopy, electron diffraction of as-prepared and annealed/pressure quenched compositions. Our results provide conclusive support to the formation of composite clusters containing all the three elements, germanium, sulphur and bismuth, which crystallize in simpler stoichiometric compounds Bi2S3 and GeS2.

Optical parameters of chalcogenide glass multilayers with 12–15 nm modulation lengths prepared by thermal evaporation can be changed by laser irradiation. Photoluminescence (PL) studies were carried out on such nonirradiated and irradiated multilayered samples of a-Se/As2S3 (sublayer thickness of a-Se is 4–5 nm for one set of samples and 1–2 nm for the other set. However As2S3 sublayer thickness is 11–12 nm for both sets of samples.) PL intensity can be increased by several orders of magnitude by reducing the Se well layer (lower band gap) thickness and can be further increased by irradiating the samples with appropriate wavelengths in the range of the absorption edge. The broadening of luminescence bands takes place either with a decrease in Se layer thickness or with irradiation. The former is due to the change in interface roughness and defects because of the enhanced structural disorder while the latter is due to photoinduced interdiffusion. The photoinduced interdiffusion creates defects at the interface between Se and As2S3 by forming an As–Se–S solid solution. From the deconvoluted PL spectrum, it is shown that the peak PL intensity, full width half maximum, and the PL quantum efficiency of particular defects giving rise to PL, can be tuned by changing the sublayer thickness or by interdiffusion.

In Ge-As-Te system, the glass forming region determined by normal melt quenching method has two regions (GFR I and GFR II) separated by few compositions gap. With a simple laboratory built twin roller apparatus, we have succeeded in preparing Ge7.5AsxTe92.5-x glasses over extended composition ranges. A distinct change in T-g is observed at x = 40, exactly at which the separation of the glass forming regions occur indicating the changes in the connectivity and the rigidity of the structural network. The maximum observed in glass transition (T-g) at x = 55 corresponding to the average coordination number (Z(av)) = 2.70 is an evidence for the shift of the rigidity percolation threshold (RPT) from Z(av) = 2.40 as predicted by the recent theories. The glass forming tendency (K-gl) and Delta T (=T-c-T-g) is low for the glasses in the GFR I and high for the glasses in the GFR II.

A study of Bi-doped amorphous (Ge42S58)100−xBix and Ge20S80−xBix has been carried out by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction methods so as to elucidate the impurity-induced modifications in the semiconductors. Thermal analysis reveals the presence of complex structural units in the modified material. An interesting feature of this study is the existence of a double glass transition in Ge20S80−xBix, which is reported for the first time in this system.

Studies on the electrical switching behavior of melt quenched bulk Si15Te85-xSbx glasses have been undertaken in the composition range (1 <= x <= 10), in order to understand the effect of Sb addition on the electrical switching behavior of Si15Te85-x base glass. It has been observed that all the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied exhibit a smooth memory type switching. Further, the switching voltages are found to decrease almost linearly with Sb content, which indicates that the metallicity of the dopant plays a dominant role in this system compared to network connectivity/rigidity. The thickness dependence of switching voltage (V-th) indicates a clear thermal origin for the switching mechanism. The temperature variation of switching voltages reveals that the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied have a moderate thermal stability. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) and electrical switching studies have been undertaken on Ge20Se80-xBix glasses (1 <= x <= 13), to understand the effect of topological thresholds on thermal properties and electrical switching behavior. It is found that the compositional dependence of glass transition temperature (Tg), crystallization temperature (T-c1) and thermal stability (AT) of Ge20Se80-xBix glasses show anomalies at a composition x= 5, the rigidity percolation/stiffness threshold of the system. Further, unusual variations are also observed in different thermal properties, such as T-g, T-c1, Delta T, Delta C-p and Delta H-NR, at the composition x= 10, which indicates the occurrence of chemical threshold in these glasses at this composition. Electrical switching studies indicate that Ge20Se8o_RBig glasses with 5 11 exhibit threshold switching behavior and those with x = 12 and 13 show memory switching. A sharp decrease has been noticed in the switching voltages with bismuth concentration, which is due to the more metallic nature of bismuth and the presence of Bi+ ions. Further, a saturation is seen in the decrease in V-T around x = 6, which is related to bismuth phase percolation at higher concentrations of Bi. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bulk Ge(17)Te83_,JI glasses (05x.5_13), have been found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (also known as threshold voltage V-th) of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses are found to decrease with increasing thallium content. The rate of decrease of Vtry is greater at lower concentrations and \textbackslashid, falls at a slower rate for higher thallium concentrations (x 6). The addition of thallium to the Ge-Te network fragments the covalent network and introduces ionic nature to it; the reduction in network connectivity leads to the decrease in switching voltages with thallium content. The decrease in the glass transition temperatures of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with increasing thallium concentration supports the idea of decrease in network connectivity with TI addition. The more metallic nature of TI also contributes to the observed reduction in the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with TI content. Further, there is an interesting correlation seen between the threshold voltage V-th and the average bond energy, as a function of TI content. In addition, the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses have been found to decrease with sample thickness almost linearly. The set-reset studies indicate that the Ge17Te83-xTl2 sample can be switched for more than 10 cycles, whereas other glasses could not be reset beyond two switching cycles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract | Electrical switching which has applications in areas such as information storage, power control, etc is a scientifically interesting and technologically important phenomenon exhibited by glassy chalcogenide semiconductors. The phase change memories based on electrical switching appear to be the most promising next generation non-volatile memories, due to many attributes which include high endurance in write/read operations, shorter write/read time, high scalability, multi-bit capability, lower cost and a compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology.Studies on the electrical switching behavior of chalcogenide glasses help us in identifying newer glasses which could be used for phase change memory applications. In particular, studies on the composition dependence of electrical switching parameters and investigations on the correlation between switching behavior with other material properties are necessary for the selection of proper compositions which make good memory materials. In this review, an attempt has been made to summarize the dependence of the electrical switching behavior of chalcogenide glasses with other material properties such as network topological effects, glass transition & crystallization temperature, activation energy for crystallization, thermal diffusivity, electrical resistivity and others.

We report the results of the electrical switching studies performed on the bulk Al20GexTe80-x (2.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 15) chalcogenide glasses. The well known topological features, mechanical and chemical thresholds are observed. Mechanical threshold is seen at a mean coordination number of atoms, < r > = 2.50 (x = 5) a clear shift rom the mean field value of < r > = 2.4 whereas the chemical threshold is observed at < r > = 2.65 (x = 12.5) as predicted by the chemically ordered covalent network model These experiments are a sequel to similar experiments on Al20AsxTe80-x glasses in which mechanical threshold was seen at < r > = 2.60 and no chemical threshold was observed These results am well understood by a chemical bond picture developed in this article.
