Donor doped BaTiO3 ceramics become insulating5 under controlled conditions with effective dielectric constants >10. The changes in EPR signals indicate that a certain fraction of the donor doped BaTiO3 is cubic even at room temperature and that the cubic fraction increases with the donor content. X-ray powder diffraction data support the EPR results. The coexistence of both the phases over a range of temperature is characteristic of diffused phase transition. The effect of grain size variation on EPR signal intensities indicate that the boundary layers surrounding the grains may constitute the cubic phase as a result of higher Ba-vacancies and donor contents at the grain boundary layer than in the bulk. Since the acceptor states arising from the Ba-vacancies and the impurities are activated in the cubic phase, they capture electrons from the conduction band, rendering the cubic phase electrically more insulating than the semiconductive tetragonal grain interiors. Thus, the cubic grain boundary layers act as effective dielectric media where the field tends to concentrate.

We show that the application of a modest dc electrical field, about 4 V/cm, can significantly reduce grain growth in yttria-stabilized polycrystalline zirconia. These measurements were made by annealing samples, for 10 h at 1300°C, with and without an electrical field. The finding adds a new dimension to the role of applied electrical fields in sintering and superplasticity, phenomena that are critical to the net-shape processing of ceramics. Grain-growth retardation will considerably enhance the rates of sintering and superplasticity, leading to significant energy efficiencies in the processing of ceramics.

The local Fe ferromagnetic (FM) moment at the grain boundaries of a ceramic sample of Ca2FeReO6 double perovskite was investigated by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L-2,L-3 edges and compared to the overall bulk magnetization. We found that, at the grain boundaries, the Fe FM moments at H=5 T are much smaller than expected and that the MxH curve is harder than in the bulk magnetization. These results suggest a larger degree of Fe/Re antisite disorder at the grain boundaries of this sample, shedding light into the intriguing nonmetallic resistivity behavior despite the reported presence of free carriers. The presently developed two-stage process involves diping the prefired porous disks of n-BaTiO3 in nonaqueous solutions containing Al-buty rate, Ti-isopropoxide, and tetraethyl silicate and subsequent sintering. This leads to uniform distribution of the grain-boundary layer (GBL) modifiers (Al2O3+ TiO2+ SiO2) and better control of the grain size as well as the positive temperature coefficient of resistivity characteristics. The technique is particularly suited for GBL modifiers in low concentrations (< 1%).

Grain boundary sliding during high temperature deformation can lead to stress concentrations and an enhancement of diffusion in mobile boundaries. Experiments were conducted on a fine grained 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia, under conditions associated with superplastic flow involving grain boundary sliding. Tracer diffusion studies under creep conditions and without load indicate that there is no enhancement in either the lattice or grain boundary diffusivities. The experimental creep data are consistent with an interface controlled diffusion creep mechanism. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Partially grain-oriented (48%) ceramics of strontium bismuth tantalate (SrBi2Ta2O9) have been fabricated via conventional sintering. The grain-orientation factor of the ceramics was determined, as a function of both the sintering temperature and duration of sintering using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. Variations in microstructural features (from acircular to plate like morphology) as a function of sintering temperature of the pellets were monitored by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The dielectric constant and loss measurements as functions of both frequency and temperature have been carried out along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the pressing axis. The anisotropy (epsilon(rn)/epsilon(rp)) associated was found to be 2.21. The effective dielectric constant of the samples with varying porosity was predicted using different dielectric mixture formulae. The grain boundary and grain interior contributions to the dielectric properties were rationalized using the impedance spectroscopy. The pyroelectric coefficient for strontium bismuth tantalate ceramic was determined along the parallel and perpendicular directions to the pressing axis and found to be -23 muC/m(2)K and -71 muC/m(2)K, respectively at 300 K. The ferroelectric properties of these partially grain-oriented ceramics are superior in the direction perpendicular to the pressing axis to that in the parallel direction.

Stable and highly reproducible current‐limiting characteristics are observed for polycrystalline ceramics prepared by sintering mixtures of coarse‐grained, donor‐doped BaTiO3 (tetragonal) as the major phase and ultrafine, undoped cubic perovskite such as BaSnO3, BaZrO 3, SrTiO3, or BaTiO3 (cubic). The linear current‐voltage (I‐V) relation changes over to current limiting as the field strength increases, when thermal equilibrium is attained. The grain‐boundary layers with low donor and high Sn, Zr, or Sr have depleted charge carrier density as compared to that in the grain bulk. The voltage drop at the grain‐boundary layers diminishes the temperature gradient between the interior and surface regions.

Pyrochlore phase free [Pb0.94Sr0.06] [(Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.95)] O-3 ceramics has been synthesized with pure Perovskite phase by semi-wet route using the columbite precursor method. The field dependences of the dielectric response and the conductivity have been measured in a frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz and in a temperature range from 303 K to 773 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity with frequency has been performed, assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the dielectric loss spectra suggests that the distribution of the relaxation times is temperature independent. The SEM photographs of the sintered specimens present the homogenous structures and well-grown grains with a sharp grain boundary. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. When measured at frequency (100 Hz), the polarization shows a strong field dependence. Different piezoelectric figures of merit (k(p), d(33) and Q(m)) of the material have also been measured obtaining their values as 0.53, 271 pC/N and 1115, respectively, which are even higher than those of pure PZT with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Thus the present ceramics have the optimal overall performance and are promising candidates for the various high power piezoelectric applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fine powders comprising nanocrystallites of Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) were synthesized via oxalate precursor method, which facilitated to obtain homogenous and large grain sized ceramics at a lower sintering temperature. The compacted powders were sintered at various temperatures in the range of 1200 degrees C-1500 degrees C for an optimized duration of 10 h. Interestingly the one that was sintered at 1450 degrees C/10 h exhibited well resolved Morphotrophic Phase Boundary. The average grain size associated with this sample was 30 mu m accompanied by higher domain density mostly with 90 degrees twinning. These were believed to have significant contribution towards obtaining large strain of about 0.2% and piezoelectric coefficient as high as 563 pC/N. The maximum force that was generated by BCZT ceramic (having 30 mu m grain size) was found to be 161 MPa, which is much higher than that of known actuator materials such as PZT (40MPa) and NKN-5-LT (7 MPa). Strontium modified barium zirconium titanate with general formula Ba1-xSrxZr0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics have been prepared by solid state and high energy ball milling technique. The X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement studies show that all the compositions have single phase symmetry. The composition BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3 shows orthorhombic symmetric with space group Amm2. The structure changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal with strontium doping up to x = 0.3 and with further addition, changes to cubic. The scanning electron micrographs show that the grain size decreases with increase in strontium content. The temperature dependent dielectric behavior shows three phase transition in the parent material which merges with an increase in Sr content The transition temperature and dielectric constant decreases with an increase in Sr concentration. The phase transition becomes more diffused with increment in doping concentration. The ferroelectric behavior of the ceramics is studied by the hysteresis loop. The optical behavior is studied by the UV-visible spectroscopy and found that the optical band gap increases with Sr concentration. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper highlights the microstructural features of commercially available interstitial free (IF) steel specimens deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to four passes following the route A. The microstructure of the samples was studied by different techniques of X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis as a function of strain (epsilon). It was found that the crystallite size is reduced substantially already at epsilon=2.3 and it does not change significantly during further deformation. At the same time, the dislocation density increases gradually up to epsilon=4.6. The dislocation densities estimated from X-ray diffraction study are found to correlate very well with the experimentally obtained yield strength of the samples.

In contrast to metallic alloys, the mechanical characteristics of superplastic ceramics are very sensitive to minor changes in levels of trace impurities. In the present study, the mechanical behavior of a 2 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia was studied in tension and compression in two batches of material, with small variations in levels of trace impurities, to examine the influence of stress axis and impurity content on the deformation behavior. The mechanical properties of the material were characterized in terms of the expression: (epsilon)over dot proportional to sigma(n) where (epsilon)over dot is the strain rate, sigma is the stress and n is termed the stress exponent. The mechanical behavior of the ceramic was identical in tension and compression, for a material with a given level of impurity. The high purity specimens exhibited a transition from a stress exponent of similar to 3 to similar to 2 with an increase in stress, whereas the low purity material displayed only n similar to 2 behavior over the entire stress range studied. Detailed high resolution and analytical electron microscopy studies revealed that there was no amorphous phase at interfaces in both batches of material; however, segregation of Al at interfaces was detected only in the low purity material. The observed transition in stress exponents can be rationalized in terms of two sequential mechanisms: grain boundary sliding with n similar to 2 and interface reaction controlled grain boundary sliding with n similar to 3. The transition from n similar to 3 to similar to 2 occurred at lower stresses with an increase in the grain size and a decrease in the purity level.

An attractive microstructural possibility for enhancing the ductility of high-strength nanocrystals is to develop a bimodal grain-size distribution, in which the fine grains provide strength, and the coarser grains enable strain hardening. Annealing of nanocrystalline Ni over a range of temperatures and times led to microstructures with varying volume fractions of coarse grains and a change in texture. Tensile tests revealed a drastic reduction in ductility with increasing volume fraction of coarse grains. The reduction in ductility may be related to the segregation of sulphur to grain boundaries.

The grain size dependence of the yield stress in hot rolled 99.87 pct magnesium sheets and rods was measured in the temperature range 77 K to 420 K. Hot rolling produced strong basal textures and, for a given grain size, the hot rolled material has a higher strength than extruded material. The yield strength-grain size relation in the above temperature range follows the Hall-Petch equation, and the temperature dependencies of the Hall-Petch constants σ0 and k are in support of the theory of Armstrong for hcp metals that the intercept σ0 is related to the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for basal slip (easy slip) and the slope k is related to the CRSS for prismatic slip (difficult slip) occurring near the grain boundaries. In the hot rolled magnesium, σ0 is larger and k is smaller than in extruded material, observations which are shown to result from strong unfavorable basal and favorable 1010 textures, respectively. Texture affects the Hall-Petch constants through its effect on the orientation factors relating them to the CRSS for the individual slip systems controlling them.

We demonstrate ordered array formation of Au nanoparticles by controlled solid-state dewetting of a metal film on stepped alumina substrates. In situ transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that the dewetting process starts with nucleation of ordered dry regions on the substrate. The chemical potential difference between concave and convex surface regions induces anisotropic metal diffusion leading to the formation of nanowires in the valleys. The nanowires fragment due to Rayleigh instability forming arrays of metal nanoparticles on the substrate. The length scale of reconstruction relative to the starting film thickness is an important parameter in controlling the spatial order of the nanoparticles.
