The aggregation property of multiheaded surfactants has been investigated by constant pressure molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in aqueous medium. The model multiheaded surfactants contain more than one headgroup (x = 2, 3, and 4) for a single tail group. This increases the hydrophilic charge progressively over the hydrophobic tail which has dramatic consequences in the aggregation behavior. In particular, we have looked at the change in the aggregation property such as critical micellar concentration (cmc), aggregation number, and size of the micelles for the multiheaded surfactants in water. We find with increasing number of headgroups of the Multiheaded surfactants that the cmc values increase and the aggregation numbers as well as the size of the micelles decrease. These trends are in agreement with the experimental findings as reported earlier with x = 1, 2, and 3. We also predict the aggregation properties of multiheaded surfactant With four headgroups (x = 4) for which no experimental studies exist yet.

A series of isomeric cationic surfactants (S1-S5) bearing a long alkyl chain that carries a 1,4-phenylene unit and a trimethyl ammonium headgroup was synthesized; the location of the phenyl ring within the alkyl tail was varied in an effort to understand its influence on the amphiphilic properties of the surfactants. The cmc's of the surfactants were estimated using ionic conductivity measurements and isothermal calorimetric titrations (ITC); the values obtained by the two methods were found to be in excellent agreement. The ITC measurements provided additional insight into the various thermodynamic parameters associated with the micellization process. Although all five surfactants have exactly the same molecular formula, their micellar properties were seen to vary dramatically depending on the location of the phenyl ring; the cmc was seen to decrease by almost an order of magnitude when the phenyl ring was moved from the tail end (cmc of S1 is 23 mM) to the headgroup region (cmc of S5 is 3 mM). In all cases, the enthalpy of micellization was negative but the entropy of micellization was positive, suggesting that in all of these systems the formation of micelles is both enthalpically and entropically favored. As expected, the decrease in cmc values upon moving the phenyl ring from the tail end to he headgroup region is accompanied by an increase in the thermodynamic driving force (Delta G) for micellization. To understand further the differences in the micellar structure of these surfactants, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements were carried out; these measurements reveal that the aggregation number of the micelles increases as the cmc decreases. This increase in the aggregation number is also accompanied by an increase in the asphericity of the micellar aggregate and a decrease in the fractional charge. Geometric packing arguments are presented to account for these changes in aggregation behavior as a function of phenyl ring location.

Measurements of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross sections from different mixed micelles composed of CTAB and Br-, n-C16H33N+Me2-(CH2)(m)N+Me2-n-C16H33, Br- (16-m-16, 2Br(-), where m = 3, 5, and 10), in aqueous media (D2O) are reported. The data have been analyzed using the Hayter and Penfold model for macroion solution to compute the interparticle structure factor S(Q) taking into account the screened Coulomb interactions between the micelles. The aggregate composition matches with that predicted from an ideal mixing model. The SANS analysis further indicates that the extent of aggregate growth and the Variations of shapes of the mixed micelles could be modulated by the amount of dimeric surfactant present in these mixtures. With the spacer chain length m less than or equal to 4 in the dimeric surfactant, the propensity of micellar growth is particularly pronounced. The effect of the variation of the temperature for the mixed micellar system (23.1 mol % of 16-3-16, 2Br(-)) was also examined. The systemic microviscosities that the mixed micellar aggregates offer to a solubilized, extrinsic fluorescence probe, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene, were determined. The variation of the microviscosities of the mixed micelles as a function of percentages of the dimeric surfactants could be explained in terms of conformational variations and progressive looping of the spacer chain of dimeric surfactants in mixed micellar aggregates with increasing m values.

A probe, 9-(anthrylmethyl)trimethylammonium chloride, 1, was prepared. 1 binds to calf-thymus DNA or Escherichia coli genomic DNA with high affinity, as evidenced from the absorption titration. Strong hypochromism, spectral broadening and red-shifts in the absorption spectra were observed. Half-reciprocal plot constructed from this experiment gave binding constant of 5±0.5×104 M−1 in base molarity. We employed this anthryl probe-DNA complex for studying the effects of addition of various surfactant to DNA. Surfactants of different charge types and chain lengths were used in this study and the effects of surfactant addition to such probe-DNA complex were compared with that of small organic cations or salts. Addition of either salts or cationic surfactants led to structural changes in DNA and under these conditions, the probe from the DNA-bound complex appeared to get released. However, the cationic surfactants could induce such release of the probe from the probe-DNA complex at a much lower concentration than that of the small organic cations or salts. In contrast the anionic surfactants failed to promote any destabilization of such probe-DNA complexes. The effects of additives on the probe-DNA complexes were also examined by using a different technique (fluorescence spectroscopy) using a different probe ethidium bromide. The association complexes formed between the cationic surfactants and the plasmid DNA pTZ19R, were further examined under agarose gel electrophoresis and could not be visualized by ethidium bromide staining presumably due to cationic surfactant-induced condensation of DNA. Most of the DNA from such association complexes can be recovered by extraction of surfactants with phenol-chloroform. Inclusion of surfactants and other additives into the DNA generally enhanced the DNA melting temperatures by a few °C and at high [surfactant], the corresponding melting profiles got broadened.

An insight into the effects of new ionic liquid-type gemini imidazolium cationic surfactants on the structure and function of the lipases is of prime importance for their potential application. Changes in the activity, stability and structure of Rhizopus ouzae lipase in the presence of novel gemini surfactants, C-16-3-C(16)im]Br-2 and C-16-12-C(16)im]Br-2 were probed in the present study. Surfactant with shorter spacer length, C-16-3-C(i6)im]Br-2 was found to be better in improving the hydrolytic activity and thermal stability of the lipase. For both the surfactants, activation was concentration dependent. CD spectroscopy results showed a decrease in a-helix and an increase in beta-sheet content in the presence of these surfactants. A higher structural change observed in presence of C-16-12-C(16)im]Br-2 correlated with lower enzyme activity. Isothermal titration calorimetric studies showed the binding to be spontaneous in nature based on sequential two site binding model. The forces involved in binding were found to differ for the two surfactants proving that the spacer length is an important factor which governs the interaction. These surfactants could be used as promising components both in enzyme modification and media engineering for attaining the desired goals in biocatalytic reactions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Ethidium bromide is one of the best known DNA intercalator. Upon intercalation inside DNA, the fluorescence due to ethidium bromide gets enhanced by many orders of magnitude. In this paper, we employed ethidium bromide as a probe for studying surfactant-DNA complexation using fluorescence spectroscopy and agarose gel electrophoresis. Surfactants of different charge types and chain lengths were used and the results were compared with that of the related small organic cations or salts under comparable conditions. The cationic surfactants induced destabilization of the ethidium bromide-DNA complex at concentrations in orders of magnitude lower than that of the small organic cations or salts. In contrast however, the anionic surfactants failed to promote any such destabilization of probe-DNA complex. DNA loses its ethidium bromide stainability in the presence of high concentration of cationic surfactant aggregates as revealed from agarose gel electrophoresis experiments. Inclusion of surfactants and other additives into the DNA generally enhanced the DNA double-strand to single strand transition melting temperatures by a few degrees, in a concentration-dependent manner and at high surfactant concentration melting profiles got broadened.

Cationic surfactants such as dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimehtylammonium bromide (TTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB); and anionic surfactants such as sodium decyl sulphate (SDeS), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STDS) have been used to determine their solubility and micellization in ternary eutectic melt (acetamide + urea + ammonium nitrate) at 50 degrees C. We employed the electrical conductivity and the surface tension measurement techniques to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The deviation in the slope of the specific conductance/surface tension against surfactant concentration plots indicated the aggregations of surfactants and hence, their CMC. CMC decreases with increase of alkyl chain length due to the increased van der Waals forces. The calculated increment in Gibb's energy per methylene group for cationic and anionic surfactants is about -6 kJ mol(-1) and -4 kJ mol(-1) respectively. It is found that, the CMCs of the surfactants in the ternary melt are higher than the CMCs of same surfactants in water (similar to 25 degrees C). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In order to elucidate the role of the linkage region that connects polar headgroups with hydrophobic segments in a lipid monomer, cationic mixed-chain amphiphiles containing acyl and alkyl hydrophobic segments connected at the level of Me(2)N(+) headgroups 2a-d were synthesized. Related dialkyldimethyl-ammonium ion surfactants 1a-e and diacyl systems 3a-c were also synthesized. Despite mismatch in the connector region, amphiphiles 2a-d form bilayer vesicles like their dialkyl and diacyl counterparts, as revealed by electron microscopy. Introduction of an ester connector function between the polar and hydrophobic parts raises the phase transition temperature (T-m), transition enthalpies, and resistance to ion permeation. Consideration of energy minimized conformations points toward the importance of differences in the depth of chain penetration into the putative bilayer.

Dimeric or gemini surfactants consist of two hydrophobic chains and two hydrophilic head groups co; valently connected by a hydrocarbon spacer. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements from bis-cationic C16H33N+(CH3)(2)-(CH2)(m)-N+(CH3)(2)C(16)H(33)2Br(-) dimeric surfactants, referred to-as 16-m-16, for different length of hydrocarbon spacers m-3-6, 8, 10, and 12, are reported. The measurements have been carried out at various concentrations: C=2.5 and 10 mM for all m and C=30 and 50 mM for m greater than or equal to 5. It is found that micellar structure depends on the length of the spacer. Micelles are disks for m=3, cylindrical for m=4, and prolate ellipsoidals for other values of m. These structural results are in agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the packing parameter. It has also been observed that conformation of the spacer and the hydrophobic chains in the interior of the micelle change as the length of the spacer is increased. The concentration dependence for m greater than or equal to 5 shows that the effect of surfactant concentration on the size of the micelle is more pronounced for m=5 and 12 than for the intermediate spacers. The fractional charge on the micelle increases with the increase in spacer length and decreases when the concentration is increased.

Dimeric or gemini surfactants consist of two hydrophobic chains and two hydrophilic head groups covalently connected by a hydrophobic or hydrophilic spacer. This paper reports the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements from aqueous micellar solutions of two different recently developed types of dimeric surfactants: (i) bis-anionic C16H33PO4--(CH2)(m)-PO4-C16H33,2Na(+) dimeric surfactants composed of phosphate head groups and a hydrophobic polymethylene spacer, referred to as 16-m-16,2Na(+), for spacer lengths m = 2, 4, 6, and 10, (ii) bis-cationic C16H33N+(CH3)(2)-CH2-(CH2-O-CH2)(p)-CH2-N+ (CH3)(2)C16H33,2Br(-) dimeric surfactants composed of dimethylammonium head groups and a wettable polyethylene oxide spacer, referred to as 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-), for spacer lengths p = 1 - 3. The micellar structures of these surfactants are compared with the earlier studied bis-cationic C16H33N+ (CH3)(2)-(CH2)(m)-N+ (CH3)(2)C16H33,2Br(-) dimeric surfactants composed of dimethylammonium head groups and a hydrophobic polymethylene spacer, referred to as 16-m-16,2Br(-). It is found that 16-m-16,2Na(+), similar to 16-m-16,2Br(-), form various micellar structures depending on the spacer length. Micelles an disklike for rn = 2, rodlike for m = 4, and prolate ellipsoidal fur m = 6 and 10. The micelles of 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-) are prolate ellipsoidal for all the values of p = 1 - 3. It is also found that micelles of 16-m-16,2Na(+) and 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-) are large in comparison to those of 16-in-16,2Br(-) for similar spacer lengths. This is connected with the fact that both in 16-m-16,2Na(+) and 16-CH2-p-CH2-16,2Br(-), the head group or the spacer is more hydrated as compared to that in the 16-m-16,2Br(-). An increase in the hydration of the spacer or the head group increases the screening of the Coulomb repulsion between the charged head groups. This effect has been found to be more pronounced in the dimeric surfactants having wettable spacers. [S1063-651X(99)00303-7].

A series of gemini surfactants based on cationic imidazolium ring as polar headgroup, abbreviated as lm-n-lm], 2Br(-) (n = 2, 5, 6 and 12), was synthesized. Their ability to stabilize silver nanoparticles in aqueous media was investigated. The resulting suspensions were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). They exhibit specific morphologies by adopting different supramolecular assemblies in aqueous media depending on the internal packing arrangements and on the number of spacer methylene units -(CH2)(n)-]. Individual colloids were extracted from the aqueous to chloroform layer and spread at the air/water interface to allow the formation of well-defined Langmuir films. By analysis of the surface pressure-area isotherms, the details about the packing behavior and orientation of the imidazolium gemini surfactant capped silver nanoparticles were obtained. Morphological features of the dynamic process of monolayer compression at the air-water interface were elucidated using Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). These monolayers were further transferred on mica sheets by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique at their associated collapse pressure and the morphology of these monolayers was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In spite of intense research on ZnO over the past decade, the detailed investigation about the crystallographic texture of as obtained ZnO thin films/coatings, and its deviation with growth surface is scarce. We report a systematic study about the orientation distribution of nanostructured ZnO thin films fabricated by microwave irradiation with the variation of substrates and surfactants. The nanostructured films comprising of ZnO nanorods are grown on semiconductor substrates such as Si(100), Ge(100)], conducting substrates (ITO-coated glass, Cr coated Si), and polymer coated Si (PMMA/Si) to examine the respective development of crystallographic texture. The ZnO deposited on semiconductor substrates yieldsmixed texture, whereas c-axis oriented ZnO nanostructured films are obtained by conducting substrate, and PMMA coated Si substrates. Among all the surfactants, nanostructured film produced by using the lower molecular weight of polymeric surfactants (polyvinylpyrrolidone) shows a stronger (0002) texture, and that can be tuned to (10 - 10) by increasing the molecular weight of the surfactant. The strongest basal pole is achieved for the ZnO deposited on PMMA coated Si as substrate, and cetyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide as cationic surfactant. The texture analysis is carried out by X-ray pole figure analysis using the Schultz reflection method. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new (dialkylamino)pyridine (DAAP)-based ligand amphiphiles 3-5 have been synthesized. All of the compounds possess a metal ion binding subunit in the form of a 2,6-disubstituted DAAP moiety. In addition, at least one ortho-CH2OH substituent is present in all the ligands. Complex formation by these ligands with various metal ions were examined under micellar conditions, but only complexes with Cu(II) ions showed kinetically potent esterolytic capacities under micellar conditions. Complexes with Cu(II) were prepared in host comicellar cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) media at pH 7.6. Individual complexes were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. These metallomicelles speed the cleavage of the substrates p-nitrophenyl hexanoate or p-nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphate. To ascertain the nature of the active esterolytic species, the stoichiometries of the respective Cu(II) complexes were determined from the kinetic version of Job's plot. In all the instances, 2:1 complex ligand/Cu(II) ion are the most kinetically competent species. The apparent pK(a) values of the Cu(II)-coordinated hydroxyl groups of the ligands 3, 4, and 5, in the comicellar aggregate, are 7.8, 8.0, and 8.0, respectively, as estimated from the rate constant vs pH: profiles of the ester cleavage reactions. The nucleophilic metallomicellar reagents and the second-order "catalytic" rate constants toward esterolysis of the substrate p-nitrophenyl hexanoate (at 25 degrees C, pH 7.6) are 37.5 for 3, 11.4 for 4, and 13.8 for 5. All catalytic systems comprising the coaggregates of 3, 4, or 5 and CTABr demonstrate turnover behavior in the presence of excess substrate.

Small unilamellar vesicles formed from four cationic lipids in the absence and the presence of varying amounts of cholesterol were studied using fluorescence polarization and H-1-NMR techniques. The fluorescence polarization data clearly indicate that the packing order in the cationic lipid bilayers are affected by inclusion of cholesterol. importantly, this effect exists also with a cationic lipid that is devoid of any formal linkage region where the interaction of the lipid with cholesterol through hydrogen bonding is not feasible. The interactions of cholesterol with different types of cationic lipids in excess water have also been examined in multilamellar dispersions using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In all the cases, the methylene proton linewidths in the NMR spectra respond to the addition of cholesterol to vesicles. Hydrophobic association of the lipid and cholesterol imposes restriction on the chain (CH2)(n) motions, leaving the terminal CH3 groups relatively mobile. On the basis of energy-minimized structural models, a rationale of the cholesterol-cationic lipid assembly has also been presented.
