A single step process for the synthesis of size-controlled silver nanoparticles has been developed using a bifunctional molecule, octadecylamine (ODA). Octadecylamine complexes to Ag+ ions electrostatically, reduce them, and subsequently stabilizes the nanoparticles thus formed. Hence, octadecylamine simultaneously functions as both a reducing and a stabilizing agent. The amine-capped nanoparticles can be obtained in the form of dry powder, which is readily redispersible in aqueous and organic solvents. The particle size, and the nucleation and growth kinetics of silver nanoparticles could be tuned by varying the molar ratio of ODA to AgNO3. The UV-vis spectra of nanoparticles prepared with different concentrations of ODA displayed the well-defined plasmon band with maximum absorption around 425 nm. The formation of silver metallic nanoparticles was confirmed by their XRD pattern. The binding of ODA molecule on the surface of silver has been studied by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. The formation of well-dispersed spherical Ag nanoparticles has been confirmed by TEM analysis. The particle size and distribution are found to be dependent on the molar concentration of the amine molecule. Open aperture z-scans have been performed to measure the nonlinearity of Ag nanoparticles. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Biofunctionalization of noble metal nanoparticles like Ag, Au is essential to obtain biocompatibility for specific biomedical applications. Silver nanciparticles are being increasingly used in bio-sensing applications owing to excellent optoelectronic properties. Among the serum albumins, the most abundant proteins in plasma, a wide range of physiological functions of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) has made it a model system for biofunctionalization. In absence of adequate prior reports, this study aims to investigate the interaction between silver nanoparticles and BSA. The interaction of BSA [0.05-0.85% concentrations] with Ag nanoparticles [50 ppm concentration] in aqueous dispersion was Studied through UV-vis spectral changes, morphological and surface structural changes. At pH 7, which is More than the isoelectric point of BSA, a decrease in absorbance at plasmon peak of uninteracted nanciparticles (425 mn) was noted till 0.45% BSA, beyond that a blue shift towards 410 urn was observed. The blue shift may be attributed to enhanced electron density on the particle surfaces. Increasing pH to 12 enhanced the blue shift further to 400 rim. The conformational changes in BSA at alkaline pH ranges and consequent hydrophobic interactions also played an important role. The equilibrium adsorption data fitted better to Freundlich isotherm compared to Langmuir Curve. The X-ray diffraction study revealed complete coverage of Ag nanoparticles by BSA. The scanning electron microscopic study of the interacted nanoparticles was also carried Out to decipher morphological changes. This study established that tailoring the concentration of BSA and pH of the interaction it was possible to reduce aggregation of nanoparticles. Biofunctionalized Ag nanoparticles with reduced aggregation will be more amenable towards bio-sensing applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silver nanoparticles are known to have bactericidal effects. A new generation of dressings incorporating antimicrobial agents like silver nanoparticles is being formulated to reduce or prevent infections. The particles can be incorporated in materials and cloth rendering them sterile. Recently, it was found that aqueous silver ions can be reduced by aqueous extract of plant parts to generate extremely stable silver nanoparticles in water. Apart from being environmentally friendly process, use of Neem leaves extract might add synergistic antibacterial effect of Neem leaves to the biosynthesized nanoparticles. With this hypothesis the biosynthetic production of silver nanoparticles by aqueous extract of Neem leaves and its bactericidal effect in cotton cloth against E. Coli were studied in this work. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by short term (1 day) and long term (21 days) interaction of Neem extract (20% w/v) and 0.01 M AgNO3 solution in 1:4 mixing ratio. The synthesized particles were characterized by UV visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and incorporated into cotton disks by (i) centrifuging the disks with liquid broth containing nanoparticles, (ii) in-situ coating process during synthesis, and (iii) coating with dried and purified nanoparticles. The antibacterial property of the nanoparticles coated cotton disks was studied by disk diffusion method. The effect of consecutive washing of the coated disks with distilled water on antibacterial property was also investigated. This work demonstrates the possible use of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles by its incorporation in cloths leading them to sterilization.

Nanoclusters of 25 nm sized Mg-THF have been prepared by the solvated metal atom dispersion method. Room-temperature digestive ripening of these nanoclusters in the presence of hexadecylamine (HDA) resulted in highly monodisperse colloidal Mg-HDA nanoparticles of 2.8 ± 0.2 nm. An insight into the room-temperature digestive ripening process was obtained by studying the disintegration of clusters for various Mg:HDA ratios. The Mg colloids are quite stable with respect to precipitation of particles under Ar atmosphere. Using this procedure, pure Mg(0) nanopowders were obtained in gram scale quantities. The Mg powder precipitated from the colloid was fully hydrided at 33 bar and 118 °C. Initial desorption of H2 from samples of MgH2 was achieved at a remarkably low temperature, 115 °C compared to >350 °C in bulk Mg, demonstrating the importance of the size on the desorption temperatures.

We describe here a rapid, energy-efficient, green and economically scalable room temperature protocol for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Tannic acid, a polyphenolic compound derived from plant extracts is used as the reducing agent. Silver nanoparticles of mean size ranging from 3.3 to 22.1 nm were synthesized at room temperature by the addition of silver nitrate to tannic acid solution maintained at an alkaline pH. The mean size was tuned by varying the molar ratio of tannic acid to silver nitrate. We also present proof of concept results demonstrating its suitability for room temperature continuous flow processing.

A one-step process was used for the preparation of gold and silver nanoparticles stabilized by an aminophthalocyanine macrocycle. The resultant nanoparticles were characterized by absorption spectra, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The nanoparticles were found to possess relatively narrow size distribution. The gold nanoparticles have an average diameter of similar to 2 nm, while silver particles have 4-5 nm. Preliminary studies on fluorescence and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy were carried out using these nanoparticles. Fluorescence studies indicate that gold nanoparticles do not quench the fluorescence, while silver nanoparticles do. The stabilized nanoparticles showed enhancement of the Raman signals, thus revealing that they are good substrates for surface enhanced Raman scattering studies.

Owing to widespread applications, synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles is recently attracting considerable attention. Increasing environmental concerns over chemical synthesis routes have resulted in attempts to develop biomimetic approaches. One of them is synthesis using plant parts, which eliminates the elaborate process of maintaining the microbial culture and often found to be kinetically favourable than other bioprocesses. The present study deals with investigating the effect of process variables like reductant concentrations, reaction pH, mixing ratio of the reactants and interaction time on the morphology and size of silver nanoparticles synthesized using aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) leaves. The formation of crystalline silver nanoparticles was confirmed using X-ray diffraction analysis. By means of UV spectroscopy, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques, it was observed that the morphology and size of the nanoparticles were strongly dependent on the process parameters. Within 4 h interaction period, nanoparticles below 20-nm-size with nearly spherical shape were produced. On increasing interaction time (ageing) to 66 days, both aggregation and shape anisotropy (ellipsoidal, polyhedral and capsular) of the particles increased. In alkaline pH range, the stability of cluster distribution increased with a declined tendency for aggregation of the particles. It can be inferred from the study that fine tuning the bioprocess parameters will enhance possibilities of desired nano-product tailor made for particular applications.

Terahertz time domain spectroscopy has been used to study low frequency confined acoustic phonons of silver nanoparticles embedded in poly (vinyl alcohol) matrix in the spectral range of 0.1-2.5 THz. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function show two bands at 0.60 and 2.12 THz attributed to the spheroidal and toroidal modes of silver nanoparticles, thus demonstrating the usefulness of terahertz time domain spectroscopy as a complementary technique to Raman spectroscopy in characterizing the nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles are being extensively studied due to their widespread applications and unique properties. In the present study, the growth kinetics of silver nanoparticles as synthesized on reduction of silver nitrate solution by aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica leaves was investigated. The formation of silver nanoparticles was preliminarily monitored by measuring the absorption maxima at different time intervals after adding the reducing agent to the silver salt solution (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 h). At different time points characterization studies were conducted using X-ray diffraction studies, FT-IR techniques, zeta potential studies and transmission electron microscopy. The total available silver in the reaction medium was determined at different durations using ICP-OES. The changes in reduction potential in the medium were also monitored using potentiometric analysis. The results confirm a definite change in the medium pertaining to formation of the stable nanoparticles after 2 h, and a significant increase in the agglomeration tendency after 4 h of interaction. The growth kinetic data of the nanoparticles till 3.5 h was found to fit the LSW model confirming diffusion limited growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present investigation explores the adaptability of a microwave assisted route to obtain silver nanoparticles by the reduction of AgNO3 with vanillin, an environmentally benign material. Anionic surfactants such as AOT and SDS were used separately for encapsulating AgNPs and their role was compared. The UV-Visible absorption spectra present a broad SPR band consisting of two peaks suggesting the formation of silver nanoparticle with bimodal size distribution. The TEM image shows particles with spherical and hexagonal morphologies which confirms the results of UV-Vis studies. The anisotropy in the particle morphology can be attributed to the surface oxidation which in turn produces Ag@Ag2O core-shell nanostructures. Thus an intriguing feature of this system is that the obtained colloid is a mixture of AgNPs with and without Ag2O layers. Studies on the influence of pH on the stability of the synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the presence of excess Ag2O layers has a profound influence on it. Ag2O layers can be removed from AgNPs' surface by changing the solution pH to the acidic regime. The present study attests the enhanced ability of AOT in stabilizing the AgNPs in aqueous media. We are reporting a novel green approach to incorporate silver nanoparticles (NPs) selectively in the polyelectrolyte capsule shell for remote opening of polyelectrolyte capsules. This approach involves in situ reduction of silver nitrate to silver NPs using PEG as a reducing agent (polyol reduction method). These nanostructured capsules were prepared via layer by layer (LbL) assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica template followed by the synthesis of silver NPs and subsequently the dissolution of the silica core. The size of silver nanoparticles synthesized was 60 +/- 20 nm which increased to 100 +/- 20 nm when the concentration of AgNO3 increased from 25 mM to 50 mM. The incorporated silver NPs induced rupture and deformation of the capsules under laser irradiation. This method has advantages over other conventional methods involving chemical agents that are associated with cytotoxicity in biological applications such as drug delivery and catalysis. The nanochemistry of calcium remains unexplored, which is largely due to the inaccessibility of calcium nanoparticles in an easy to handle form by conventional methods of synthesis as well as its highly reactive and pyrophoric nature. The synthesis of colloidal Ca nanoparticles by the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method is described. The as-prepared Ca-THF nanoparticles, which are polydisperse, undergo digestive ripening in the presence of a capping agent, hexadecyl amine (HDA) to afford highly monodisperse colloids consisting of 2-3 nm sized Ca-HDA nanoparticles. These are quite stable towards precipitation for long periods of time, thereby providing access to the study of the nanochemistry of Ca. Particles synthesized in this manner were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. Under an electron beam, two adjacent Ca nanoparticles undergo coalescence to form a larger particle.

In this study we present a colorimetric detection method for Cr (VI) in aqueous solution based on as synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) without surface functionalization. The method principle involves reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by excess reductant present in as synthesized Ag NP dispersion, and subsequent aggregation of Ag NPs by Cr (III) leading to red-shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak. The UV-vis absorption spectra. Zeta potentials, dynamic light scattering measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the aggregation of the Ag NPs. Under the optimized conditions, a good linear relationship (correlation coefficient r=0.981) was obtained between the ratio of the absorbance at 550 nm to that at 390 nm (A(550/390)) and the concentration of Cr (VI) over the range of 10(-3)-10(-9) M 50 mg/L to 50 ng/L]. The reported probe has a limit of detection down to 1 nM, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the lowest ever reported for the colorimetric detection of Cr (VI). Furthermore, a remarkable feature of this method is that it involves a simple technique exhibiting high selectivity to Cr (VI) over other tested heavy metal ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier BM. Novel ultrasound-sensitive nanocapsules were designed via layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) of polyelectrolytes for remote activated release of biomolecules/drug. Nanocapsules embedded with silver nanoparticles in the walls were synthesized by alternate assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica template followed by nanoparticle synthesis and subsequent template removal thus yielding nanocapsules. The silver NPs were synthesized in situ within the capsule walls under controlled conditions. The nanocapsules were found to be well dispersed and the silver NPs were evenly distributed within the shell. FITC-dextran permeated easily into the capsules containing silver NP's due to the pores generated during the formation of NP's. When the loaded nanocapsules were sonicated, the presence of the silver NPs in the shell structure led to rupturing of the shell into smaller fragments thus releasing the FITC-dextran. Such nanocapsules have the potential to be used as drug delivery vehicles and offer the scope for further development in the areas of modern medicine, material science, and biochemistry.
