Advances in forest carbon mapping have the potential to greatly reduce uncertainties in the global carbon budget and to facilitate effective emissions mitigation strategies such as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Though broad-scale mapping is based primarily on remote sensing data, the accuracy of resulting forest carbon stock estimates depends critically on the quality of field measurements and calibration procedures. The mismatch in spatial scales between field inventory plots and larger pixels of current and planned remote sensing products for forest biomass mapping is of particular concern, as it has the potential to introduce errors, especially if forest biomass shows strong local spatial variation. Here, we used 30 large (8-50 ha) globally distributed permanent forest plots to quantify the spatial variability in aboveground biomass density (AGBD in Mgha(-1)) at spatial scales ranging from 5 to 250m (0.025-6.25 ha), and to evaluate the implications of this variability for calibrating remote sensing products using simulated remote sensing footprints. We found that local spatial variability in AGBD is large for standard plot sizes, averaging 46.3% for replicate 0.1 ha subplots within a single large plot, and 16.6% for 1 ha subplots. AGBD showed weak spatial autocorrelation at distances of 20-400 m, with autocorrelation higher in sites with higher topographic variability and statistically significant in half of the sites. We further show that when field calibration plots are smaller than the remote sensing pixels, the high local spatial variability in AGBD leads to a substantial ``dilution'' bias in calibration parameters, a bias that cannot be removed with standard statistical methods. Our results suggest that topography should be explicitly accounted for in future sampling strategies and that much care must be taken in designing calibration schemes if remote sensing of forest carbon is to achieve its promise.

For an understanding of the cation selectivity and general binding characteristics of macrotetralide antibiotic nonactin (NA) with ions of different sizes and charges, the nature of binding of divalent cation, Ca2+, to NA and conformation of the NA-Ca2+ complex have been studied by use of 270-MHz proton nuclear magnetic resonance ('H NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). The calcium ion induced significantly large changes in chemical shifts for H7, H2, H3, and H5 protons of NA and relatively small changes for H18 and H2' protons. Changes in I3C chemical shift were quite large for carbonyl carbon, C,; it is noteworthy that in the NA-K+ complex, H2 and H2' protons practically do not show any change during complexation and carbonyl carbon shows a much smaller chemical shift change.

Adsorption of oxygen on Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag, and Au surfaces has been investigated by employing UV and X-ray photoelectron spectrscopy as well as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Molecularly chemisorbed (singlet) oxygen is found on Ni, Cu, Ag, and Au surfaces showing features such as stabilization of the rB* orbital, destabilization of the .nu orbital, higher O(1s) binding energy than the atomic species, and a band 2-3 eV below the Fermi level due to metal d-O(2p)u* interaction. 0-0 and metal-oxygen stretching frequencies have been observed in EELS. Physical adsorption of O2 is found to occur on Pd and Ni surfaces, only at high exposures in the latter case. Physical adsorption and multilayer condensation of CO, on metal surfaces are distinguished by characteristic relaxation shifts in UPS as well as O(1s) binding energies. Adsorption of CO on a Ni surface covered with presorbed atomic oxygen gives rise to C02.

Morphology and electrochemical performance of mixed crystallographic phase titania nanotubes for prospective application as anode in rechargeable lithium ion batteries are discussed. Hydrothermally grown nanotubes of titania (TiO2) and carbon-titania (C-TiO2) comprise a mixture of both anatase and TiO2 (B) crystallographic phases. The first cycle capacity (at Current rate = 10 mAg(-1)) for bare TiO2 nanotubes was 355 mAhg(-1) (approximately 1.06 Li), which is higher than both the theoretical capacity (335 mAhg(-1)) and the reported values for pure anatase and TiO2 (B) nanotubes. Higher capacity is attributed to it combination of the presence of mixed crystallographic phases of titania and trivial size effects. The surface area of bare TiO2 nanotubes was very high at 340 m(2) g(-1). C-TiO2 nanotubes showed a slightly lower first-cycle specific capacity of 307 mAhg(-1), but the irreversible capacity loss in the first cycle decreased by half compared to bare TiO2 nanotubes. The C-TiO2 nanotubes also showed a better rate capability, that is, higher capacities compared to bare TiO2 nanotubes in the Current range 0.1-2 Ag-1. Enhanced rate capability in the case of C-TiO2 is attributed to the efficient percolation of electrons as well its to the decrease in the anatase phase.

We study the thermoelectric power under classically large magnetic field (TPM) in ultrathin films (UFs), quantum wires (QWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined III-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The TPM has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, stressed materials, bismuth and carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It is found taking quantum confined CdGeAs2, InAs, InSb, CdS, stressed n-InSb and Bi that the TPM increases with increasing film thickness and decreasing electron statistics exhibiting quantized nature for all types of quantum confinement. The TPM in CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing carrier concentration and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of the TPM for non-degenerate materials having parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test. Composite of anatase titania (TiO2) nanospheres and carbon grown and self-assembled into micron-sized mesoporous spheres via a solvothermal synthesis route are discussed here in the context of rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The morphology and carbon content and hence the electrochemical performance are observed to be significantly influenced by the synthesis parameters. Synthesis conditions resulting in a mesoporous arrangement of an optimized amount carbon and TiO2 exhibited the best lithium battery performance. The first discharge cycle capacity of carbon-titania mesoporous spheres (solvothermal reaction at 150 degrees C at 6 h, calcination at 500 degrees C under air, BET surface area 80 m(2)g(-1)) was 334 mAhg(-1) (approximately 1 Li) at current rate of 0.066 Ag-1. High storage capacity and good cyclability is attributed to the nanostructuring of TiO2 (mesoporosity) as well as due to formation of a percolation network of carbon around the TiO2 nanoparticles. The micron-sized mesoporous spheres of carbon-titania composite nanoparticles also show good rate cyclability in the range (0.066-6.67) Ag-1.

We investigate the photoemission from quantum wells (QWs) in ultrathin films (UFs) and quantum well wires (QWWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined Ill-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The photoemission has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, n-GaP, n-Ge, PtSb2, stressed materials and Bismuth on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It has been found taking quantum confined CdGeAS(2), InAs, InSb, CdS, GaP, Ge, PtSb2, stressed n-InSb and B1 that the photoemission exhibits quantized variations with the incident photon energy, changing electron concentration and film thickness, respectively, for all types of quantum confinement. The photoemission from CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing normalized electron degeneracy and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of photoemission from non-degenerate semiconductors and parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test.

Investigations of a variety of transition metal clusters by means of high-energy spectroscopies including BIS show the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition with decrease in the cluster size. The chemical reactivity of the clusters also varies significantly with the size. Among the many fascinating properties of the fullerenes C60 and C70, a noteworthy one is the interaction between metal clusters and fullerenes. Phase transitions of fullerenes involving orientational disorder and pressure-induced decrease in the band gap of C60 are other novel features of interest.

We report unipolar resistive switching in ultrathin films of chemically produced graphene (reduced graphene oxide) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The two-terminal devices with yield >99% are made at room temperature by forming continuous films of graphene of thickness similar to 20 nm on indium tin oxide coated glass electrode, followed by metal (Au or Al) deposition on the film. These memory devices are nonvolatile, rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 10(5) and switching times up to 10 mu s. The devices made of MWNT films are rewritable with ON/OFF ratios up to similar to 400. The resistive switching mechanism is proposed to be nanogap formation and filamentary conduction paths. Fluorescence quenching of biologically active carboxamide namely (E)-2-(4-chlorobenzylideneamino)-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobe nzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxamide [ECNCTTC] by aniline and carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) quenchers in different solvents using steady state method and time resolved method using only one solvent has been carried out at room temperature to understand the role of quenching mechanisms. The Stern-Volmer plot has been found to be linear for all the solvents studied. The probability of quenching per encounter p (p') was determined in all the solvents and was found to be less than unity. Further, from the studies of rate parameters and life time measurements in n-heptane and cyclohexane with aniline and carbon tetrachloride as quenchers have been shown that, the phenomenon of quenching is generally governed by the well-known Stern-Volmer (S-V) plot. The activation energy E(a) (or E(a)') of quenching was determined using the literature values of activation energy of diffusion E(d) and the experimentally determined values of p (or p'). It has been found that, the activation energy E(a) (E(a)') is greater than the activation energy for diffusion E(d) in all solvents. Hence, from the magnitudes of E(a) (or E(a)') as well as p (or p') infer that, the quenching mechanism is not solely due to the material diffusion, but there is also contribution from the activation energy. Much of the Bangalore sewage is treated in three streams namely Bellandur (K&C Valley),Vrishabhavati and Hebbal-Nagavara stream systems. Among these it is estimated that out of a total of about 500MLD of partially treated sewage is let into the Bellandur tank. We estimate that a total of about 77t N non-industrial anthropogenic nitrogen efflux (mainly urine and excreta) in Bangalore city. This is distributed between that handled by the three sewage streams, soak-pits and land deposition. About 17-24.5t N enters the Bellandur tank daily. This has been happening over few decades and our observations suggest that this approximately 380ha tank is functioning as a C and N removal system with reasonable efficiency. The ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen content of the water at the discharge points were estimated and found that over 80% of the nitrogen influx and over 75% of the C influx is removed by this tank system. We observed that there are three nitrogen sinks namely bacterial, micro-algal and macrophytes. The micro-algal fraction is dominated by Microcystis and Euglenophyceae members and they appear to constitute a significant fraction. Water hyacinth represents the single largest representative of the macrophytes. This tank has been functioning in this manner for over three decades. We attempt to study this phenomenon from a material balance approach and show that it is functioning with a reasonable degree of satisfaction as a natural wetland. As the population served and concomitant influx into this wetland increases, there is a potential for the system to be overloaded and to collapse. Therefore a better understanding of its function and the need for maintenance is discussed in the paper.

The fluorescence quenching studies of carboxamide namely (E)-N-(3-Chlorophenyl)-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzylideneamino)-4,5,6,7 tetrahydrobenzob]thiophene-3-carboxamide ENCTTTC] by aniline and carbon tetrachloride in six different solvents namely toluene, cyclohexane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-decane and n-pentane have been carried out at room temperature with a view to understand the quenching mechanisms. The Stern-Volmer (S-V) plots have been found to be nonlinear with a positive deviation for all the solvents studied. In order to interpret these results we have invoked the ground state complex formation and sphere of action static quenching models. Using these models various quenching rate parameters have been determined. The magnitudes of these parameters suggest that sphere of action static quenching model agrees well with the experimental results. Hence the positive deviation is attributed to the static and dynamic quenching. Further, with the use of Finite Sink approximation model, it was possible to check these bimolecular reactions as diffusion-limited and to estimate independently distance parameter R' and mutual diffusion coefficient D. Finally an effort has been made to correlate the values of R' and D with the values of the encounter distance R and the mutual coefficient D determined using the Edward's empirical relation and Stokes Einstein relation. In this study, the potential for increasing the tree cover and thereby the biomass and carbon as a mitigation option of three categories of wastelands, irrespective of their tenure, are considered. The area under wastelands in Himachal Pradesh, according to NRSA (2005), is estimated to be 2.83 Mha. Among the 28 categories of wastelands reported by NRSA, only 15 categories exist in Himachal Pradesh. In the present study, three land categories are considered for estimating the mitigation potential. They include: (i) Degraded forestland, (ii) Degraded community land and (iii) Degraded and abandoned private land. Choice of species or the mix of species to be planted on the three land categories considered for reforestation is discussed. Carbon pools considered in the present study are those, which account only for aboveground biomass, belowground biomass and soil organic carbon. This study estimates the mitigation potential at the state level considering land available under more than one category. It also provides a roadmap for future work in support of mitigation analysis and implementation.
