Solid, propellants are widely used in modern rockets and missiles. Although the history of solid rockets could be traced to the discovery of gunpowder over a thousand years ago, the technology could be perfected only by the later half of the 20(th) century. The failure of gunpowder rockets was largely due to the unknown consolidating technique of the powder composition. The emergence of large solid propellant motors had, to await the dawn of polymer. science and technology(S&T). Specific syntheses of functionally terminated polymers having cross-linking capability led to the emergence of casting technology of solid composite propellants. This review describes the various polymeric fuel/binder systems used or considered for use in solid, propellants. It includes a brief background, advantages, and shortcomings of the various systems, an account of the currently used binders and a critical survey of the advanced polymers envisaged for future usage. Special emphasis has been laid on recently synthesized polymers having N-N bonds in their structures, and-on the feasibility of developing smokeless propellants based on ammonium nitrate.

Better fatigue performance of adhesively bonded joints makes them suitable for most structural applications. However, predicting the service life of bonded joints accurately remains a challenge. In this present study, nonlinear computational simulations have been performed on adhesively bonded single lap ASTM-D1002 shear joint considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities to predict the fatigue life by judiciously applying the modified Coffin-Manson equation for adhesive joints. Elasto-plastic material models have been employed for both the adhesive and the adherends. The predicted life has close agreement in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) regime with empirical observations reported in the literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bonding a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite or metallic plate to the soffit of a reinforced concrete (RC), timber or metallic beam can significantly increase its strength and other aspects of structural performance. These hybrid beams are often found to fail due to premature debonding of the plate from the original beam in a brittle manner. This has led to the development of many analytical solutions over the last two decades to quantify the interfacial shear and normal stresses between the adherends. The adherends are subjected to axial, bending and shear deformations. However, most analytical solutions have neglected the influence of shear deformation of the adherends. For the few solutions which consider this effect in an approximate manner, their applicability is limited to one or two specific load cases. This paper presents a general analytical solution for the interfacial stresses in plated beams under an arbitrary loading with the shear deformation of the adherends duly considered. The shear stress distribution is assumed to be parabolic through the depth of the adherends in predicting the interfacial shear stress and Timoshenko's beam theory is adopted in predicting interfacial normal stress to account for the shear deformation. The solution is applicable to a beam of arbitrary prismatic cross-section bonded symmetrically or asymmetrically with a thin or thick plate, both having linear elastic material properties. The effect of shear deformation is illustrated through an example beam. The influence of material and geometric parameters of the adherends and adhesive on the interfacial stress concentrations at the plate end is discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The assembly of aerospace and automotive structures in recent years is increasingly carried out using adhesives. Adhesive joints have advantages of uniform stress distribution and less stress concentration in the bonded region. Nevertheless, they may suffer due to the presence of defects in bond line and at the interface or due to improper curing process. While defects like voids, cracks and delaminations present in the adhesive bond line may be detected using different NDE methods, interfacial defects in the form of kissing bond may go undetected. Attempts using advanced ultrasonic methods like nonlinear ultrasound and guided wave inspection to detect kissing bond have met with limited success stressing the need for alternate methods. This paper concerns the preliminary studies carried out on detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this attempt, adhesive joint samples containing varied area of kissing bond were prepared using the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRP) as substrates and epoxy resin as the adhesive layer joining them. The samples were also subjected to conventional and high power ultrasonic inspection. Further, these samples were loaded till failure to determine the bond strength during which digital images were recorded and analyzed using the DIC method. This noncontact method could indicate the existence of kissing bonds at less than 50% failure load. Finite element studies carried out showed a similar trend. Results obtained from these preliminary studies are encouraging and further tests need to be done on a larger set of samples to study experimental uncertainties and scatter associated with the method. DNA is the chemotherapeutic target for treating diseases of genetic origin. Besides well-known double-helical structures (A, B, Z, parallel stranded-DNA etc.), DNA is capable of forming several multi-stranded structures (triplex, tetraplex, i-motif etc.) which have unique biological significance. The G-rich 3'-ends of chromosomes, called telomeres, are synthesized by telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein, and over-expression of telomerase is associated with cancer. The activity of telomerase is suppressed if the G-rich region is folded into the four stranded structures, called G-quadruplexes (G4-DNAs) using small synthetic ligands. Thus design and synthesis of new G4-DNA ligands is an attractive strategy to combat cancer. G4-DNA forming sequences are also prevalent in other genomic regions of biological significance including promoter regions of several oncogenes. Effective gene regulation may be achieved by inducing a G4-DNA structure within the G-rich promoter sequences. To date, several G4-DNA stabilizing ligands are known. DNA groove binders interact with the duplex B-DNA through the grooves (major and minor groove) in a sequence-specific manner. Some of the groove binders are known to stabilize the G4-DNA. However, this is a relatively under explored field of research. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the understanding of the G4-DNA structures, particularly made from the human telomeric DNA stretches. We summarize the results of various investigations of the interaction of various organic ligands with the G4-DNA while highlighting the importance of groove binder-G4-DNA interactions.

Cancer has always been a dreadful disease and continues to attract extensive research investigations. Various targets have been identified to restrain cancer. Among these DNA happens to be the most explored one. A wide variety of small molecules, often referred to as `ligands', has been synthesized to target numerous structural features of DNA. The sole purpose of such molecular design has been to interfere with the transcriptional machinery in order to drive the cancer cell toward apoptosis. The mode of action of the DNA targeting ligands focuses either on the sequence-specificity by groove binding and strand cleavage, or by identifying the morphologically distinct higher order structures like that of the G-quadruplex DNA. However, in spite of the extensive research, only a tiny fraction of the molecules have been able to reach clinical trials and only a handful are used in chemotherapy. This review attempts to record the journey of the DNA binding small molecules from its inception to cancer therapy via various modifications at the molecular level. Nevertheless, factors like limited bioavailability, severe toxicities, unfavorable pharmacokinetics etc. still prove to be the major impediments in the field which warrant considerable scope for further research investigations. In composite solid propellants, the fuel and oxidizer are held together by a polymer binder. Among the different types of polymeric binders used in solid propellants, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is considered as the most versatile. HTPB is conventionally cured using isocyanates to form polyurethanes. However, the incompatibility of isocyanates with energetic oxidizers such as ammonium dinitramide and hydrazinium nitroformate, the short pot life of the propellant slurry, and undesirable side reactions with moisture are limiting factors which adversely affect the mechanical properties of HTPB based propellant. With an aim of resolving these problems, HTPB was chemically transformed to azidoethoxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene and propargyloxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene by adopting appropriate synthesis strategies and characterizing them by spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. This is the first report on 1,3-dipolar addition reaction involving azide and alkyne end groups for cross-linking HTPB. The blend of these two polymers underwent curing under mild temperature (60 degrees C) conditions through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction resulting in triazoletriazoline networks. The curing parameters were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameter, viz., activation energy, was computed to be 107.6 kJ/mol, the preexponential factor was 2.79 x 10(12) s-(1), and the rate constant at 60 degrees C was computed to be 3.64 x 10-(5) s-(1). The cure profile at a given temperature was predicted using the kinetic parameters. Rheological studies revealed that the gel time for curing through the 1,3-dipolar addition is 280 min compared to 120 min for curing through the urethane route. The mechanical properties of the resultant cured polybutadiene network were superior to those of polyurethanes. The cured triazolinetriazole polymer network exhibited biphasic morphology with two glass transitions (T-g) at -56 and 42 degrees C in contrast to the polyurethane which exhibited a single transition at -60 degrees C. This was corroborated by associated morphological changes observed by scanning probe microscopy. The propellant processed using this binder has the advantages of improved pot life as indicated by the end of the mix viscosity which is 165 Pas as compared with 352 Pas for the polyurethane system along with a slow build- up rate. The mechanical properties of the propellant are superior to polyurethane with an improvement of 14% in tensile strength, 22% enhancement in elongation at break, and 12% in modulus.

Herein a facile strategy has been adopted to design epoxy based adhesive/coating materials that can shield electromagnetic radiation. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were non-covalently modified with an ionic liquid and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine cobalt(II) (Co-TPP). The dispersion state of modified MWNTs in the composites was assessed using a scanning electron microscope. The electrical conductivity of the composites was improved with the addition of IL and Co-TPP. The shielding effectiveness was studied as a function of thickness and intriguingly, composites with as thin as 0.5 mm thickness were observed to reflect 497% of the incoming radiation. Carbon fibre reinforced polymer substrates were used to demonstrate the adhesive properties of the designed epoxy composites. Although, the shielding effectiveness of epoxy/MWNT composites with or without IL and Co-TPP is nearly the same for 0.5 mm thick samples, the lap shear test under tensile loading revealed an extraordinary adhesive bond strength for the epoxy/IL-MWNT/Co-TPP composites in contrast to neat epoxy. For instance, the lap shear strength of epoxy/IL-MWNT/Co-TPP composites was enhanced by 100% as compared to neat epoxy. Furthermore, the composites were thermally stable for practical utility in electronic applications as inferred from thermogravimetric analysis.

An analytical study for the static strength of adhesive lap joints is presented. The earlier solutions of Volkersen [i], DeBruyne[2] and others were limited to linear adhesives. The influence of adhesive non-linearity was first considered by Grimes' et al[3] and Dickson et al [4]. Recently Hart-Smith[5] successfully introduced elastic-plastic behaviour of the adhesive. In the present study the problem is formulated for general non-linear adhesive behaviour and an efficient numerical algorithm is written for the solution. Bilinear and trilinear models for the nonlinearity yield closed form analytical solutions.

Ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-trp)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 1–3) and [Cu(L-phe)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 4–6) of L-tryptophan (L-trp) and L-phenylalanine (L-phe) having phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1 and 4), dipyrido[3,2-d:2,3-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine (dppz, 3 and 6), were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. Complexes 3 and 6 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and show the presence of a square pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid (L-trp or L-phe) and N,N-donor phenanthroline base bind at the equatorial plane with an aqua ligand coordinated at the elongated axial site. Complex 3 shows significant distortion from the square pyramidal geometry and a strong intramolecular – stacking interaction between the pendant indole ring of L-trp and the planar dppz aromatic moiety. All the complexes display good binding propensity to the calf thymus DNA giving an order: 3, 6 (dppz) > 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen). The binding constant (Kb) values are in the range of 2.1 × 104–1.1 × 106 mol-1 with the binding site size (s) values of 0.17–0.63. The phen and dpq complexes are minor groove binders while the dppz analogues bind at the DNA major groove. Theoretical DNA docking studies on 2 and 3 show the close proximity of two photosensitizers, viz. the indole moiety of L-trp and the quinoxaline/phenazine of the dpq/dppz bases, to the complementary DNA strands. Complexes 2 and 3 show oxidative DNA double strand breaks (dsb) of supercoiled (SC) DNA forming a significant quantity of linear DNA along with the nicked circular (NC) form on photoexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm and red light of 647.1 nm (Ar–Kr laser). Complexes 1, 5 and 6 show only single strand breaks (ssb) forming NC DNA. The red light induced DNA cleavage involves metal-assisted photosensitization of L-trp and dpq/dppz base resulting in the formation of a reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) species.

Stress-strain characteristics of concrete confined in steel binders have been determined. A new factor “confinement index” has been introduced for a quantitative measure of the confinement and using these results a “stress-block” has been developed. Tests have been made on simply supported reinforced concrete beams with spiral binder confinement and analysed on the basis of the proposed stress-block. Tests have also been made oon reinforced concrete portal frames and continuous beams with spiral binder confinement at sections of possible plastic hinge formation. An analysis of these tests indicates that a full redistribution of moments has taken place at ultimate.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)] (1-3), where H2L is a Schiff base ligand 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenol and B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen for 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq for 2) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz for 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography shows the presence of an oxovanadium(IV) moiety in a six coordinate VO3N3 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band within 800-850 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative response near 0.7 V versus SCE for V(V)-V(IV) and a reductive response within -1.1 to -1.3 V due to V(IV)-V(III) couple in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values of 4.2 x 10(4) to 1.2 x 10(5) M (1). The complexes do not show any ``chemical nuclease'' activity in dark. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm via O-1(2) pathway and in near-IR light (752.5 to 799.3 nm IR optics) by HO* pathway. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells giving IC50 value of 13 mu M, while it is less toxic in dark (IC50 = 97 mu M). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The thermal decomposition of three commercial samples of carboxy-terminated polybutadiene (PBCT) resins was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at heating rates varying from 2° to 100°C/min. Kinetic parameters of the decomposition process at different heating rates were evaluated by means of the Fuoss method.1 The decomposition process and the activation energy values are found to be dependent on heating rate. Mass-spectrometric analysis of the decomposition products shows that the pyrolysis products of PBCT resins are mainly low molecular weight hydrocarbons: ethylene, acetylene, butadiene, propadiene, vinylcyclohexene, etc. The rates of evolution of these hydrocarbon products vary with the carboxy content of the PBCT resin. Based on this, a carbonium ion mechanism has been suggested for the thermal decomposition. The data generated from this work are of importance for a consideration of the mechanism of combustion of composite solid propellants based on PBCT binders.

Copolyurethanes of hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and ISRO–Polyol (ISPO), an indigenously developed castor-oil based polyol, have been prepared using toluene diiso-cyanate and hexamethylenediisocyanate. The mechanical strength and swelling characteristics of the copolyurethanes cured with trimethylol propane and triethanolamine have been studied to evolve improved solid propellant binders. By varying the ratios of the two hydroxy pre-polymers, chain extenders, and crosslinkers, copolyurethanes having a wide range of tensile strength and elongation could be obtained. Many of these systems are desirable for their use as propellant binders. The results have been explained in terms of the measured crosslink densities and other swelling properties. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
