Surface texture influences friction and transfer layer formation during sliding. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the effect of directionality of surface grinding marks of hard material on friction and transfer layer formation during sliding against soft materials. 080 M40 steel plates were ground to attain different surface roughness with unidirectional grinding marks. Then pins made of soft materials such as pure Al, pure Mg and Al-Mg alloy were slid against the prepared steel plates. Grinding angle (i.e., the angle between direction of sliding and grinding marks) was varied between 0 degrees and 90 degrees in the tests. Experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions on each plate in ambient environment. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction, which has two components adhesion and plowing - depend primarily on the directionality of grinding marks of the harder mating surface, and independent of surface roughness of the harder mating surface. For the case of pure Mg, stick-slip phenomenon was observed under dry condition for all grinding angles and it was absent upto 20 degrees grinding angles under lubricated condition. However, for the case of Al, it was observed only under lubricated conditions for angles exceeding 20 degrees. As regards the alloy, namely, Al-Mg alloy, it, was absent in both conditions. For the case of pure Mg and Al, it was observed that the amplitude of stick-slip motion primarily depends on plowing component of friction. The grinding angle effect on coefficient of friction was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction with grinding angle.

Background: Protein kinases are involved in diverse spectrum of cellular processes. Availability of draft version of the human genomic data in the year 2001 enabled recognition of repertoire of protein kinases. However, over the years the human genomic data is being refined and the current release of human genomic data has helped us to recognize a larger repertoire of over 900 human protein kinases represented mainly by splice variants. Results: Many of these identified protein kinases are alternatively spliced products. Interestingly, some of the human kinase splice variants appear to be significantly diverged in terms of their functional properties as represented by incorporation or absence of one or more domains. Many sets of protein kinase splice variants have substantially different domain organization and in a few sets of splice variants kinase domains belong to different subfamilies of kinases suggesting potential participation in different signal transduction pathways. Conclusions: Addition or deletion of a domain between splice variants of multi-domain kinases appears to be a means of generating differences in the functional features of otherwise similar kinases. It is intriguing that marked sequence diversity within the catalytic regions of some of the splice variant kinases result in kinases belonging to different subfamilies. These human kinase splice variants with different functions might contribute to diversity of eukaryotic cellular signaling.

Surface topography has been known to play an important role in the friction and transfer layer formation during sliding. In the present investigation, EN8 steel flats were ground to attain different surface roughness with unidirectional grinding marks. Pure Mg pins were scratched on these surfaces using an Inclined Scratch Tester to study the influence of directionality of surface grinding marks on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. Grinding angle (i.e., the angle between direction of scratch and grinding marks) was varied between 0 degrees and 90 degrees during the tests. Experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions. Scanning electron micrographs of the contact surfaces of pins and flats were used to reveal the surface features that included the morphology of the transfer layer. It was observed that the average coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation depend primarily on the directionality of the grinding marks but were independent of surface roughness on the harder mating surface. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed, the amplitude of which depended both on the directionality of grinding marks and the surface roughness of the harder mating surface. The grinding angle effect on the coefficient of friction, which consists of adhesion and plowing components, was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. In the education of physical sciences, the role of the laboratory cannot be overemphasised. It is the laboratory exercises which enable the student to assimilate the theoretical basis, verify the same through bench-top experiments, and internalize the subject discipline to acquire mastery of the same. However the resources essential to put together such an environment is substantial. As a result, the students go through a curriculum which is wanting in this respect. This paper presents a low cost alternative to impart such an experience to the student aimed at the subject of switched mode power conversion. The resources are based on an open source circuit simulator (Sequel) developed at IIT Mumbai, and inexpensive construction kits developed at IISc Bangalore. The Sequel programme developed by IIT Mumbai, is a circuit simulation program under linux operating system distributed free of charge. The construction kits developed at IISc Bangalore, is fully documented for anyone to assemble these circuit which minimal equipment such as soldering iron, multimeter, power supply etc. This paper puts together a simple forward dc to dc converter as a vehicle to introduce the programming under sequel to evaluate the transient performance and small signal dynamic model of the same. Bench tests on the assembled construction kit may be done by the student for study of operation, transient performance and closed loop stability margins etc.

Regional metamorphic belts provide important constraints on the plate tectonic architecture of orogens. We report here a detailed petrologic examination of the sapphirine-bearing ultra-high temperature (UHT) granulites from the Jining Complex within the Khondalite Belt of the North China Craton (NCC). These granulites carry diagnostic UHT assemblages and their microstructures provide robust evidence to trace the prograde, peak and retrograde metamorphic evolution. The P–T conditions of the granulites estimated from XMgGrt(Mg/Fe + Mg) − XMgSpr isopleth calculations indicate temperature above 970 °C and pressures close to 7 kbar. We present phase diagrams based on thermodynamic computations to evaluate the mineral assemblages and microstructures and trace the metamorphic trajectory of the rocks. The evolution from Spl–Qtz–Ilm–Crd–Grt–Sil to Spr–Qtz–Crd–Opx–Ilm marks the prograde stage. The Spl–Qtz assemblage appears on the low-pressure side of the P–T space with Spr–Qtz stable at the high-pressure side, possibly representing an increase in pressure corresponding to compression. The spectacular development of sapphirine rims around spinel enclosed in quartz supports this inference. An evaluation of the key UHT assemblages based on model proportion calculation suggests a counterclockwise P–T path. With few exceptions, granulite-facies rocks developed along collisional metamorphic zones have generally been characterized by clockwise exhumation trajectories. Recent evaluation of the P–T paths of metamorphic rocks developed within collisional orogens indicates that in many cases the exhumation trajectories follow the model subduction geotherm, in accordance with a tectonic model in which the metamorphic rocks are subducted and exhumed along a plate boundary. The timing of UHT metamorphism in the NCC (c. 1.92 Ga) coincides with the assembly of the NCC within the Paleoproterozoic Columbia supercontinent, a process that would have involved subduction of passive margins sediments and closure of the intervening ocean. Thus, the counterclockwise P–T path obtained in this study correlates well with a tectonic model involving subduction and final collisional suturing, with the UHT granulites representing the core of the hot or ultra-hot orogen developed during Columbia amalgamation.

In this study, sliding experiments were conducted using pure magnesium pins against steel plates using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. The inclination angle of the plate was varied in the tests and for each inclination angle, the pins were slid both perpendicular and parallel to the unidirectional grinding marks direction under both dry and lubricated conditions. SEM was used to study morphology of the transfer layer formed on the plates. Surface roughness of plates was measured using an optical profilometer. Results showed that the friction, amplitude of stick-slip motion and transfer layer formation significantly depend on both inclination angle and grinding marks direction of the plates. These variations could be attributed to the changes in the level of plowing friction taking place at the asperity level during sliding.

Using the framework of a new relaxation system, which converts a nonlinear viscous conservation law into a system of linear convection-diffusion equations with nonlinear source terms, a finite variable difference method is developed for nonlinear hyperbolic-parabolic equations. The basic idea is to formulate a finite volume method with an optimum spatial difference, using the Locally Exact Numerical Scheme (LENS), leading to a Finite Variable Difference Method as introduced by Sakai [Katsuhiro Sakai, A new finite variable difference method with application to locally exact numerical scheme, journal of Computational Physics, 124 (1996) pp. 301-308.], for the linear convection-diffusion equations obtained by using a relaxation system. Source terms are treated with the well-balanced scheme of Jin [Shi Jin, A steady-state capturing method for hyperbolic systems with geometrical source terms, Mathematical Modeling Numerical Analysis, 35 (4) (2001) pp. 631-645]. Bench-mark test problems for scalar and vector conservation laws in one and two dimensions are solved using this new algorithm and the results demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme in capturing the flow features accurately.

In the present investigation, unidirectional grinding marks were attained on the steel plates. Then aluminium (Al) pins were slid at 0.2°, 0.6°, 1.0°, 1.4°, 1.8°, 2.2° and 2.6° tilt angles of the plate with the grinding marks perpendicular and parallel to the sliding direction under both dry and lubricated conditions using a pin-on-plate inclined sliding tester to understand the influence of tilt angle and grinding marks direction of the plate on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction depend primarily on the grinding marks direction of the harder mating surface. Stick-slip phenomenon was observed only under lubricated conditions. For the case of pins slid perpendicular to the unidirectional grinding marks stick-slip phenomenon was observed for tilt angles exceeding 0.6°, the amplitude of which increases with increasing tilt angles. However, for the case of the pins slid parallel to the unidirectional grinding marks the stick-slip phenomena was observed for angles exceeding 2.2°, the amplitude of which also increases with increasing tilt angle. The presence of stick-slip phenomena under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities.

Friction force generated in lubricated cutting of steel is experimentally estimated by recording the tangential force experienced by the spherical face of a pin rubbing against a freshly cut surface. The pin and the cutting tool are both submerged in the lubricant and the pin is situated on the cut-track to record the force. The recording shows an instantaneous achievement of a peak in the force curve followed by a decline in time to a steady state value. The peak and not the steady state friction was found to be sensitive to the structure of the hydrocarbon and addition of additive to the oil. The configuration was designed and tested to demonstrate the influence of a reaction film which develops during cutting, on cutting tool friction. Given the strong correlation between the peak friction and the existence of a tribofilm in the cutting zone, the configuration is used to determine the lower limit of a cutting speed regime, which marks the initiation of lubricant starvation, in cutting of steel using an emulsion as a cutting fluid. We present a biquadratic Lagrangian plate bending element with consistent fields for the constrained transverse shear strain functions. A technique involving expansion of the strain interpolations in terms of Legendre polynomials is used to redistribute the kinematically derived shear strain fields so that the field-consistent forms (i.e. avoiding locking) are also variationally correct (i.e. do not violate the variational norms). Also, a rational method of isoparametric Jacobian transformation is incorporated so that the constrained covariant shear strain fields are always consistent in whatever general quadrilateral form the element may take. Finally the element is compared with another formulation which was recently published. The element is subjected to several robust bench mark tests and is found to pass all the tests efficiently.

Mining and blending operations in the high grade iron ore deposit under study are performed to optimize recovery with minimal alumina content while maintaining required levels of other chemical component and a proper mix of ore types. In the present work the regionalisation of alumina in the ores has been studied independently and its effects on global and local recoverable tonnage as well as on alternatives of mining operations have been evaluated. The global tonnage recovery curves for blocks (20m x 20m x 12m) obtained by simulation closely approximated the curves obtained theoretically using a change of support under the discretised gaussian model. Variations in block size up to 80m x 20m x 12m did not affect the recovery as the horizontal dimensions of the blocks are small in relation to the range of the variogram. A comparison of the local tonnage recovery curves obtained through multiple conditional simulations made with that obtained by the method of uniform conditioning of block grades on an estimate of panel 100m x 100m x 12m panel grade reveals comparable results only in panels which have been well conditioned and possesing an ensemble simulation mean close to the ordinary kriged value for the panel. Study of simple alternative sequence of mining on the conditionally simulated deposit shows that concentration of mining operations simultaneously on a single bench enhances the fluctuation in alumina values of ore mined.

In the present investigation, unidirectional grinding marks were created on a set of steel plates. Sliding experiments were then conducted with the prepared steel plates using Al-Mg alloy pins and an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. The goals of the experiments were to ascertain the influence of inclination angle and grinding mark direction on friction and transfer layer formation during sliding contact. The inclination angle of the plate was held at 0.2 deg, 0.6 deg, 1 deg, 1.4 deg, 1.8 deg, 2.2 deg, and 2.6 deg in the tests. The pins were slid both perpendicular and parallel to the grinding marks direction. The experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions on each plate in an ambient environment. Results showed that the coefficient of friction and the formation of transfer layer depend on the grinding marks direction and inclination angle of the hard surfaces. For a given inclination angle, under both dry and lubricated conditions, the coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation were found to be greater when the pins slid perpendicular to the unidirectional grinding marks than when the pins slid parallel to the grinding marks. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed under lubricated conditions at the highest inclination angle for sliding perpendicular to the grinding marks direction. This phenomenon could be attributed to the extent of plane strain conditions taking place at the asperity level during sliding. DOI: 10.1115/1.4002604]

This paper presents the design and development of a comprehensive digital protection scheme for applications in 25 KV a.c railway traction system. The scheme provides distance protection, detection of wrong phase coupling both in the lagging and leading directions, high set instantaneous trip and PT fuse failure. Provision is also made to include fault location and disturbance recording. The digital relaying scheme has been tried on two types of hardware platforms, one with PC/AT based hardware and the other with a custom designed standalone 16-bit microcontroller based card. Compared to the existing scheme, the operating time is around one cycle and the relaying algorithm has been optimised to minimise the number of computations. The prototype has been rigorously tested in the laboratory using a specially designed PC based relay test bench and the results are highly satisfactory.

We present the magnetic properties of polycrystalline Dy1−xSrxMnO3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) with an orthorhombic (o) crystal structure. The parent compound, o-DyMnO3, undergoes an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn spins at 39 K, followed by a spiral order at 18 K. A further antiferromagnetic transition at 5 K marks an ordering of the Dy-sublattice. Doping of divalent Sr ions results in diverse magnetization phenomena. The zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization curves display the presence of strongly interacting magnetic sublattices. For x = 0.1 and 0.2, a bifurcation between the ZFC and FC magnetization sets in at around 30 and 32 K, respectively. The ZFC magnetization peaks at about 5 K, indicating antiferromagnetic Dy-couplings similar to the case of o-DyMnO3. For x = 0.3, clear signatures of ferrimagnetism and strong anisotropy are found, including negative magnetization. The compound with x = 0.4 behaves as a spin glass, similar to Dy0.5Sr0.5MnO3.
