Two backward facing step (2 mm and 3 mm step height) models are selected for surface heat transfer measurements. The platinum thin film gauges are deposited on the Macor inserts using both hand paint and vacuum sputtering technique. Using the Eckert reference temperature method the heating rates has been theoretically calculated along the flat plate portion of the model and the theoretical estimates are compared with experimentally determined surface heat transfer rate. Theoretical analysis of heat flux distribution down stream of the backward facing step model has been carried out using Gai’s non-dimensional analysis. Based on the measured surface heating rates on the backward facing step, the reattachment distance is estimated for 2 and 3 mm step height at nominal Mach number of 7.6. It has been found from the present study that for 2 and 3 mm step height, it approximately takes about 10 and 8 step heights downstream of the model respectively for the flow to re-attach.

Using the framework of a new relaxation system, which converts a nonlinear viscous conservation law into a system of linear convection-diffusion equations with nonlinear source terms, a finite variable difference method is developed for nonlinear hyperbolic-parabolic equations. The basic idea is to formulate a finite volume method with an optimum spatial difference, using the Locally Exact Numerical Scheme (LENS), leading to a Finite Variable Difference Method as introduced by Sakai [Katsuhiro Sakai, A new finite variable difference method with application to locally exact numerical scheme, journal of Computational Physics, 124 (1996) pp. 301-308.], for the linear convection-diffusion equations obtained by using a relaxation system. Source terms are treated with the well-balanced scheme of Jin [Shi Jin, A steady-state capturing method for hyperbolic systems with geometrical source terms, Mathematical Modeling Numerical Analysis, 35 (4) (2001) pp. 631-645]. Bench-mark test problems for scalar and vector conservation laws in one and two dimensions are solved using this new algorithm and the results demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme in capturing the flow features accurately.

Grewia tiliaefolia is widely used in traditional Indian medicines to cure jaundice, biliousness, dysentery and the diseases of blood. Bioassay-guided fractionation of methanolic extract of the G. tiliaefolia bark has resulted in the isolation of D-erythro-2-hexenoic acid gamma-lactone (EHGL) and gulonic acid gamma-lactone (GAGL). Hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract and the isolated constituents were evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The treatment with methanolic extract, EHGL and GAGL at oral doses of 100, 150 and 60 mg/kg respectively with concomitant CCl4 intraperitoneal injection (I ml/kg) significantly reduced the elevated plasma levels of aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase and the incidence of liver necrosis compared with the CCl4-injected group without affecting the concentrations of serum bilirubin and hepatic markers. EHGL and GAGL significantly inhibited the elevated levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and glutathione in liver homogenates. Histology of the liver tissues of the extract and isolated constituents treated groups showed the presence of normal hepatic cords, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration as similar to the normal control. The results revealed that the hepatoprotective activity of EHGL is significant as similar to the standard drug silymarin. To clarify the influence of the extract and isolated constituents on the protection of oxidative-hepatic damage, we examined in vitro antioxidant properties of the test compounds. The extract and the constituents showed significant free radical scavenging activity. These results suggest that the extract as well as the constituents could protect the hepatocytes from CCl4-induced liver damage perhaps, by their anti-oxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl4, (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. We report that an approximant phase was initially obtained in amorphous Ti40Zr20Hf20Pd20 alloy. In the initial stage of the devitrification process, the approximant phase transforms into an icosahedral (1) phase with a high thermal stability while the cF96 Zr2Ni-type (space group Fd (3) over barm with a = 1.25 nm and 96 atoms cell(-1)) particles precipitate from the amorphous matrix. Eventually the I phase grows to several hundred nanometers when annealed at about 1000 K and then transforms into the Zr2Ni-type phase with an endothermic reaction. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. n acidic lectin (WBA II) was isolated to homogeneity from the crude seed extract of the winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) by affinity chromatography on lactosylaminoethyl-Bio-Gel. Binding of WBA II to human erythrocytes of type-A, -B and -O blood groups showed the presence of 10(5) receptors/cell, with high association constants (10(6)-10(8) M-1). Competitive binding studies with blood-group-specific lectins reveal that WBA II binds to H- and T-antigenic determinants on human erythrocytes. Affinity-chromatographic studies using A-, B-, H- and T-antigenic determinants coupled to an insoluble matrix confirm the specificity of WBA II towards H- and T-antigenic determinants. Inhibition of the binding of WBA II by various sugars show that N-acetylgalactosamine and T-antigenic disaccharide (Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen, Gal beta 1-3GalNAc) are the most potent mono- and di-saccharide inhibitors respectively. In addition, inhibition of the binding of WBA II to erythrocytes by dog intestine H-fucolipid prove that the lectin binds to H-antigenic determinant.

A plethora of indices have been proposed and used to construct dominance hierarchies in a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate societies, although the rationale for choosing a particular index for a particular species is seldom explained. In this study, we analysed and compared three such indices, viz Clutton-Brock et al.'s index (CBI), originally developed for red deer, Cervus elaphus, David's score (DS) originally proposed by the statistician H. A. David and the frequency-based index of dominance (FDI) developed and routinely used by our group for the primitively eusocial wasps Ropalidia marginata and Ropalidia cyathiformis. Dominance ranks attributed by all three indices were strongly and positively correlated for both natural data sets from the wasp colonies and for artificial data sets generated for the purpose. However, the indices differed in their ability to yield unique (untied) ranks in the natural data sets. This appears to be caused by the presence of noninteracting individuals and reversals in the direction of dominance in some of the pairs in the natural data sets. This was confirmed by creating additional artificial data sets with noninteracting individuals and with reversals. Based on the criterion of yielding the largest proportion of unique ranks, we found that FDI is best suited for societies such as the wasps belonging to Ropalidia, DS is best suited for societies with reversals and CBI remains a suitable index for societies such as red deer in which multiple interactions are uncommon. Results of a theoretical study on ultrasonic attenuation and NMR relaxation in excitonic insulators are reported. The transition rates derived have anomalous temperature dependence owing to the occurrence of coherence factors analogous to the case of superconductors. It is found that these coherence factors are characteristically different for the interband and the intraband scattering processes. It is suggested that experimental observation of these temperature-dependent coherence factors may help identify the existence of an excitonic phase.

Five different shaped weirs were designed and pertinent data for their use are given. One of these weir shapes had the least “sharp edge” at the junction of the base weir and “complementary weir.” Two other types of weirs had equal slopes at the junction of the base weir and complementary weir. Another shape, for which neither the indication accuracy was constant nor the slope was equal at the junction of the base weir and complementary weir, was also tested. The results of the four weir shapes hydraulically tested give consistent values for the coefficient of discharge varying between 0.625 to 0.631. The indication accuracies of all the previously designed linear proportional weirs (includig Sutro weir) are neither constant nor unity, as is believed.

Let n points be placed independently in d-dimensional space according to the density f(x) = A(d)e(-lambda parallel to x parallel to alpha), lambda, alpha > 0, x is an element of R-d, d >= 2. Let d(n) be the longest edge length of the nearest-neighbor graph on these points. We show that (lambda(-1) log n)(1-1/alpha) d(n) - b(n) converges weakly to the Gumbel distribution, where b(n) similar to ((d - 1)/lambda alpha) log log n. We also prove the following strong law for the normalized nearest-neighbor distance (d) over tilde (n) = (lambda(-1) log n)(1-1/alpha) d(n)/log log n: (d - 1)/alpha lambda <= lim inf(n ->infinity) (d) over tilde (n) <= lim sup(n ->infinity) (d) over tilde (n) <= d/alpha lambda almost surely. Thus, the exponential rate of decay alpha = 1 is critical, in the sense that, for alpha > 1, d(n) -> 0, whereas, for alpha <= 1, d(n) -> infinity almost surely as n -> infinity.

A novel solid solution in the system Bi-W-Cu-O has been synthesized and its structural and dielectric properties studied. The solid solution Bi2O3-(1-x)WO3-xCuO exists up to x = 0.7; the solid solutions up to x = 0.65 are orthorhombic but stabilize in tetragonal structure in a narrow range around x = 0.7. The solid solutions are non-centrosymmetric and exhibit ferroelectric behaviour similar to their parent phase Bi2WO6. The Curie point of the solid solution is found to decrease with increase in x.

Binding of several bisindolylmaleimide (BIS) like (BIS-3, BIS-8 and UCN1) and other ligands (H89, SB203580 and Y27632) with the glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3 beta) has been studied using combined docking, molecular dynamics and Poisson-Boltzmann surface area analysis approaches. The study generated novel binding modes of these ligands that can rationalize why some ligands inhibit GSK-3 beta while others do not. The relative binding free energies associated with these binding modes are in agreement with the corresponding measured specificities. This study further provides useful insight regarding possible existence of multiple conformations of some ligands like H89 and BIS-8. It is also found that binding modes of BIS-3, BIS-8 and UCN1 with GSK-3 beta and PDK1 kinases are similar. These new insights are expected to be useful for future rational design of novel, more potent GSK-3 beta-specific inhibitors as promising therapeutics.

We report thermopower (S) and electrical resistivity (rho (2DES) ) measurements in low-density (10(14) m(-2)), mesoscopic two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe at temperatures a parts per thousand(2)0.7 K a linearly growing S as a function of temperature indicating metal-like behaviour. Interestingly this metallicity is not Drude-like, showing several unusual characteristics: (i) the magnitude of S exceeds the Mott prediction valid for non-interacting metallic 2DESs at similar carrier densities by over two orders of magnitude; and (ii) rho (2DES) in this regime is two orders of magnitude greater than the quantum of resistance h/e (2) and shows very little temperature-dependence. We provide evidence suggesting that these observations arise due to the formation of novel quasiparticles in the 2DES that are not electron-like. Finally, rho (2DES) and S show an intriguing decoupling in their density-dependence, the latter showing striking oscillations and even sign changes that are completely absent in the resistivity.
