From X-ray diffraction studies it is generally believed that B-DNA has the structural parameters n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å. However, for the first time we report that polymorphism in the B-form can be observed in DNA fibres. This was achieved by the precise control of salt and humidity in fibres and by the application of the precession method of X-ray diffraction to DNA fibres. The significant result obtained is that n = 10 is not observed for crystalline fibre patterns. In fact, n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å are not found to occur simultaneously. Instead, a range of values, n = 9.6–10.0 and h = 3.35 Å–3.41 Å is observed.

Structural and rheological features of a series of molecular hydrogels formed by synthetic bile salt analogues have been scrutinized. Among seven gelators, two are neutral compounds, while the others are cationic systems among which one is a tripodal steroid derivative. Despite the fact that the chemical structures are closely related, the variety of physical characteristics is extremely large in the structures of the connected fibers (either plain cylinders or ribbons), in the dynamical modes for stress relaxation of the associated SAFINs, in the scaling laws of the shear elasticity (typical of either cellular solids or fractal floc-like assemblies), in the micron-scale texture and the distribution of ordered domains (spherulites, crystallites) embedded in a random mesh, in the type of nodal zones (either crystalline-like, fiber entanglements, or bundles), in the evolution of the distribution and morphology of fibers and nodes, and in the sensitivity to added salt. SANS appears to be a suitable technique to infer all geometrical parameters defining the fibers, their interaction modes, and the volume fraction of nodes in a SAFIN. The tripodal system is particularly singular in the series and exhibits viscosity overshoots at the startup of shear flows, an “umbrella-like” molecular packing mode involving three molecules per cross section of fiber, and scattering correlation peaks revealing the ordering and overlap of 1d self-assembled polyelectrolyte species.

A detailed understanding of the mode of packing patterns that leads to the gelation of low molecular mass gelators derived from bile acid esters was carried out using solid state NMR along with complementary techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Solid state C-13{H-1} cross polarization (CP) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR of the low molecularmass gel in its native state was recorded for the first time. A close resemblance in the packing patterns of the gel, xerogel and bulk solid states was revealed upon comparing their C-13{H-1} CPMAS NMR spectral pattern. A doublet resonance pattern of C-13 signals in C-13{H-1}CPMAS NMR spectra were observed for the gelator molecules, whereas the non-gelators showed simple singlet resonance or resulted inthe formation of inclusion complexes/solvates. PXRD patterns revealed a close isomorphous nature of the gelators indicating the similarity in the mode of the packing pattern in their solid state. Direct imaging of the evolution of nanofibers (sol-gel transition) was carried out using POM, which proved the presence of self-assembled fibrillar networks (SAFINs) in the gel. Finally powder X-ray structure determination revealed the presence of two non-equivalent molecules in an asymmetric unit which is responsible for the doublet resonance pattern in the solid state NMR spectra.

The effect of Raman scattering on co-propagation of two short optical pulses is considered. The intra pulse Raman scattering causes the self-frequency shift of each pulse. The effect of the inter pulse Raman scattering is to enhance the frequency shift while the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) term suppresses (enhances) the frequency shift if the center frequency difference between the optical pulses falls to the right (left) of the Raman gain peak. An expression for the frequency shift as a function of the propagation distance is obtained.

The recent development of several organic materials with large nonlinear susceptibilities, high damage threshold and low melting points encouraged researchers to employ these materials in fiber form to efficiently couple diode laser pumps and obtain enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG). In this paper we report the growth of single crystal cored fibers of 4-nitro-4'-methylbenzylidene aniline, ethoxy methoxy chalcone and (-)2-((alpha) -methylbenzylamino)-5- nitropyridine by inverted Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. The fibers were grown in glass capillaries with varying internal diameters and lengths and were characterized using x-ray and polarizing microscope techniques. The propagation loss at 632.8 nm and 1300 nm were measured and SHG was studied using 1064 nm pump.

Mulberry fiber (Bivoltine) and non-mulberry fiber (Tassar) were subjected to stress-strain studies and the corresponding samples were examined using wide angle X-ray scattering studies. Here we have two different characteristic stress-strain curves and this has been correlated with changes in crystallite shape ellipsoids in all the fibers. Exclusive crystal structure studies of Tassar fibers show interesting feature of transformation from antiparallel chains to parallel chains.

The chemical composition of amorphous SiOx has been analyzed by oxidation studies and is found to be SiO1.7. SiO1.7 appears to be a monophasic amorphous material on the basis of 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance, high resolution electron microscopy, and comparative behavior of a physical mixture of Si and SiO2. Carbothermal reduction and nitridation reactions have been carried out on amorphous SiO1.7 and on amorphous SiO2 obtained from oxidation of SiO1.7. At 1623 K reactions of SiO1.7 lead exclusively to the formation of Si2N2O, while those of SiO2 lead exclusively to the formation of Si3N4. Formation of copious fibers of α-Si3N4 was observed in the latter reaction. It is suggested that the partial pressure of SiO in equilibrium with reduced SiO1.7 and SiO2 during the reaction is the crucial factor that determines the chemistry of the products. The differences in the structures of SiO2 and SiO1.7 have been considered to be the origin of the differences in the SiO partial pressures of the reduction products formed prior to nitridation. The effect of the ratios, C:SiO1.7 and C:SiO2, in the reaction mixture as well as the effect of the temperature on the course of the reactions have also been investigated.

Carbon nanotubes dispersed in polymer matrix have been aligned in the form of fibers and interconnects and cured electrically and by UV light. Conductivity and effective semiconductor tunneling against reverse to forward bias field have been designed to have differentiable current-voltage response of each of the fiber/channel. The current-voltage response is a function of the strain applied to the fibers along axial direction. Biaxial and shear strains are correlated by differentiating signals from the aligned fibers/channels. Using a small doping of magnetic nanoparticles in these composite fibers, magneto-resistance properties are realized which are strong enough to use the resulting magnetostriction as a state variable for signal processing and computing. Various basic analog signal processing tasks such as addition, convolution and filtering etc. can be performed. These preliminary study shows promising application of the concept in combined analog-digital computation in carbon nanotube based fibers. Various dynamic effects such as relaxation, electric field dependent nonlinearities and hysteresis on the output signals are studied using experimental data and analytical model.

Metallic and other type of coatings on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors alter their sensitivity with thermal and mechanical stress while protecting the fragile optical fiber in harsh sensing surroundings. The behavior of the coated materials is unique in their response to thermal and mechanical stress depending on the thickness and the mode of coating. The thermal stress during the coating affects the temperature sensitivity of FBG sensors. We have explored the thermal response of FBGs coated with Al and Pb to an average thickness of 80 nm using flash evaporation technique where the FBG sensor is mounted in a region at room temperature in an evacuated chamber having a pressure of 10(6) Torr which will minimize any thermal stress during the coating process. The coating thickness is chosen in the nanometer region with the aim to study thermal behavior of nanocoatings and their effect on FBG sensitivity. The sensitivity of FBGs is evaluated from the wavelengths recorded using an optical sensing interrogator sm 130 (Micron Optics) from room temperature to 300 degrees C both during heating and cooling. It is observed that the sensitivity of the metal coated fibers is better than the reference FBG with no coating for the entire range of temperature. For a coating thickness of 80 nm, Al coated FBG is more sensitive than the one coated with Pb up to 170 degrees C and it reverses at higher temperatures. This point is identified as a reversible phase transition in Pb monolayers as the 2-dimensional aspects of the metal layers are dominant in the nanocoatings of Pb. On cooling, the phase transition reverses and the FBGs return to the original state and for repeated cycles of heating and cooling the same pattern is observed. Thus the FBG functions as a sensor of the phase transitions of the coatings also. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The development of scaffolds for neural tissue engineering application requires an understanding of cell adhesion, proliferation, and migration of neuronal cells. Considering the potential application of carbon as scaffold materials and the lack of understanding of compatibility of amorphous carbon with neuronal cells, the carbon-based materials in the forms of carbon films and continuous electrospun carbon nanofibers having average diameter of approximate to 200 nm are being investigated with or without ultraviolet (UV) and oxy-plasma (OP) treatments for cytocompatibility property using mouse Neuroblastoma (N2a) and rat Schwann cells (RT4-D6P2T). The use of Raman spectroscopy in combination with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction establishes the amorphous nature and surface-bonding characteristics of the studied carbon materials. Although both UV and OP treatments make carbon surfaces more hydrophilic, the cell viability of N2a cells is statistically more significant on OP treated fibers/films compared to UV fiber/film substrates after 4 days in culture. The electrospun carbon fibrous substrate provides the physical guidance to the cultured Schwann cells. Overall, the experimental results of this study demonstrate that the electrospun amorphous carbon nanofibrous scaffolds can be used as a suitable biomaterial substrate for supporting cell adhesion and proliferation of neuronal cells in the context of their applications as artificial nerve implants. Gray water treatment and reuse is an immediate option to counter the upcoming water shortages in various parts of world, especially urban areas. Anaerobic treatment of gray water in houses is an alternative low cost, low energy and low sludge generating option that can meet this challenge. Typical problems of fluctuating VFA, low pH and sludge washout at low loading rates with gray water feedstock was overcome in two chambered anaerobic biofilm reactors using natural fibers as the biofilm support. The long term performance of using natural fiber based biofilms at moderate and low organic loading rates (OLR) have been examined. Biofilms raised on natural fibers (coir, ridge-gourd) were similar to that of synthetic media (PVC, polyethylene) at lower OLR when operated in pulse fed mode without effluent recirculation and achieved 80-90% COD removal at HRT of 2 d showing a small variability during start-up. Confocal microscopy of the biofilms on natural fibers indicated thinner biofilms, dense cell architecture and low extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS) compared to synthetic supports and this is believed to be key factor in high performance at low OLR and low strength gray water. Natural fibers are thus shown to be an effective biofilm support that withstand fluctuating characteristic of domestic gray water. (C) 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Reinforcing soil with fibers is a useful method for improving the strength and settlement response of soil. The soil and fiber characteristics and their interaction are some of the major factors affecting the strength of reinforced soil. The fibers are usually randomly distributed in the soil, and their orientation has a significant effect on the behavior of the reinforced soil. In the paper, a study of the effect of anisotropic distribution of fibers on the stress-strain response is presented. Based on the concept of the modified Cam clay model, an analytical model was formulated for the fiber-reinforced soil, and the effect of fiber orientation on the stress-strain behavior of soil was studied in detail. The results show that, as the inclination of fibers with the horizontal plane increased, the contribution of fibers in improving the strength of fiber-reinforced soil decreased. The effect of fibers is maximum when they are in the direction of extension, and vice versa. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

In an electrochemical alloying reaction, the electroactive particles become mechanically unstable owing to large volume changes occurring as a result of high amounts of lithium intake. This is detrimental for long-term battery performance. Herein, a novel synthesis approach to minimize such mechanical instabilities in tin particles is presented. An optimal one-dimensional assembly of crystalline single-phase tin-antimony (SnSb) alloy nanoparticles inside porous carbon fibers (abbreviated SnSb-C) is synthesized for the first time by using the electrospinning technique (employing non-oxide precursors) in combination with a sintering protocol. The ability of antimony to alloy independently with lithium is beneficial as it buffers the unfavorable volume changes occurring during successive alloying/dealloying cycles in Sn. The SnSb-C assembly provides nontortuous (tortuosity coefficient, =1) fast conducting pathways for both electrons and ions. The presence of carbon in SnSb-C completely nullifies the conventional requirement of other carbon forms during cell electrode assembly. The SnSb-C exhibited remarkably high electrochemical lithium stability and high specific capacities over a wide range of currents (0.2-5Ag(-1)). In addition to lithium-ion batteries, it is envisaged that SnSb-C also has potential as a noncarbonaceous anode for other battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion batteries.

The local fast-spiking interneurons (FSINs) are considered to be crucial for the generation, maintenance, and modulation of neuronal network oscillations especially in the gamma frequency band. Gamma frequency oscillations have been associated with different aspects of behavior. But the prolonged effects of gamma frequency synaptic activity on the FSINs remain elusive. Using whole cell current clamp patch recordings, we observed a sustained decrease of intrinsic excitability in the FSINs of the dentate gyrus (DG) following repetitive stimulations of the mossy fibers at 30 Hz (gamma bursts). Surprisingly, the granule cells (GCs) did not express intrinsic plastic changes upon similar synaptic excitation of their apical dendritic inputs. Interestingly, pairing the gamma bursts with membrane hyperpolarization accentuated the plasticity in FSINs following the induction protocol, while the plasticity attenuated following gamma bursts paired with membrane depolarization. Paired pulse ratio measurement of the synaptic responses did not show significant changes during the experiments. However, the induction protocols were accompanied with postsynaptic calcium rise in FSINs. Interestingly, the maximum and the minimum increase occurred during gamma bursts with membrane hyperpolarization and depolarization respectively. Including a selective blocker of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) in the bath; significantly attenuated the calcium rise and blocked the membrane potential dependence of the calcium rise in the FSINs, suggesting their involvement in the observed phenomenon. Chelation of intracellular calcium, blocking HCN channel conductance or blocking CP-AMPARs during the experiment forbade the long lasting expression of the plasticity. Simultaneous dual patch recordings from FSINs and synaptically connected putative GCs confirmed the decreased inhibition in the GCs accompanying the decreased intrinsic excitability in the FSINs. Experimentally constrained network simulations using NEURON predicted increased spiking in the GC owing to decreased input resistance in the FSIN. We hypothesize that the selective plasticity in the FSINs induced by local network activity may serve to increase information throughput into the downstream hippocampal subfields besides providing neuroprotection to the FSINs.
