Zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) have been synthesized on flexible substrates by adopting a new and novel three-step process. The as-grown ZnO NRs are vertically aligned and have excellent chemical stoichiometry between its constituents. The transmission electron microscopic studies show that these NR structures are single crystalline and grown along the < 001 > direction. The optical studies show that these nanostructures have a direct optical band gap of about 3.34 eV. Therefore, the proposed methodology for the synthesis of vertically aligned NRs on flexible sheets launches a new route in the development of low-cost flexible devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Quantifying and characterising atomic defects in nanocrystals is difficult and low-throughput using the existing methods such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). In this article, using a defocused wide-field optical imaging technique, we demonstrate that a single ultrahigh-piezoelectric ZnO nanorod contains a single defect site. We model the observed dipole-emission patterns from optical imaging with a multi-dimensional dipole and find that the experimentally observed dipole pattern and model-calculated patterns are in excellent agreement. This agreement suggests the presence of vertically oriented degenerate-transition-dipoles in vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. The HRTEM of the ZnO nanorod shows the presence of a stacking fault, which generates a localised quantum well induced degenerate-transition-dipole. Finally, we elucidate that defocused wide-field imaging can be widely used to characterise defects in nanomaterials to answer many difficult questions concerning the performance of low-dimensional devices, such as in energy harvesting, advanced metal-oxide-semiconductor storage, and nanoelectromechanical and nanophotonic devices.

A low temperature solution approach was employed to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with various aspect ratios. Various sizes (diameter-10-25nm) of the nanorods were grown by changing the concentrations of the growth solution. The length (50nm-500nm) of nanorods was controlled using growth times. These one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures with direct paths for a charge transport with high surface area for light harvesting, are promising candidates for organic photovoltaics (OPV). The structural and optical properties of the prepared ZnO nanorods have been studied using SEM, XRD and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Using as-grown ZnO inverted OPV was fabricated. ZnO nanorods were subjected to various doses of UV-ozone irradiation which led to improvement in transmission and hence enhanced device performance.

Vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical nanostructures were developed by homo-epitaxial growth method using nickel as catalyst, and their physical properties were investigated and reported. ZnO nanorods grown by vapor-liquid-solid method are single crystalline and grown along the < 001 > direction, whereas the second order nano-branches are grown along the < 110 > direction. The homo-epitaxial relation between nano-branches (ZnOb) and ZnO cores (ZnOc) is found to be (110)ZnOb//(110)ZnOc and (002)ZnOb//(002)ZnOc. The simple and hierarchical nanostructures exhibited ultra-violet emission peak at 380 nm as near band edge emission of ZnO and have very weak defects related peak at 492 nm. Two different soft-chemical, self-assembly-based solution approaches are employed to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with controlled texture. The methods used involve seeding and growth on a substrate. Nanorods with various aspect ratios (1-5) and diameters (15-65 nm) are grown. Obtaining highly oriented rods is determined by the way the substrate is mounted within the chemical bath. Furthermore, a preheat and centrifugation step is essential for the optimization of the growth solution. In the best samples, we obtain ZnO nanorods that are almost entirely oriented in the (002) direction; this is desirable since electron mobility of ZnO is highest along this crystallographic axis. When used as the buffer layer of inverted organic photovoltaics (I-OPVs), these one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures offer: (a) direct paths for charge transport and (b) high interfacial area for electron collection. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of ZnO nanorods are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the surface chemical features of ZnO films are studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Using as-grown ZnO, inverted OPVs are fabricated and characterized. For improving device performance, the ZnO nanorods are subjected to UV-ozone irradiation. UV-ozone treated ZnO nanorods show: (i) improvement in optical transmission, (ii) increased wetting of active organic components, and (iii) increased concentration of Zn-O surface bonds. These observations correlate well with improved device performance. The devices fabricated using these optimized buffer layers have an efficiency of similar to 3.2% and a fill factor of 0.50; this is comparable to the best I-OPVs reported that use a P3HT-PCBM active layer.

UV photodetectors based on ZnO nanorods prepared by two methods have been fabricated by a simple drop casting procedure. The detectors show good performance at 375 nm giving satisfactory values of responsivity, external quantum efficiency and photoconductive gain. The performance of ZnO nanorods prepared at low temperatures, containing a larger concentration of defects, is found to be superior. (C) 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

We report the shape transformation of ZnO nanorods/nanotubes at temperatures (similar to 700 degrees C) much lower than the bulk melting temperature (1975 degrees C). With increasing annealing temperature, not only does shape transformation take place but the luminescence characteristics of ZnO are also modified. It is proposed that the observed shape transformation is due to surface diffusion, contradicting the previously reported notion of melting and its link to luminescence. Luminescence in the green-to-red region is observed when excited with a blue laser, indicating the conversion of blue to white light.

Faceted ZnO nanorods with different aspect ratios were synthesized by a solvothermal method by tuning the reaction time. Increased reaction leads to the formation of high aspect ratio ZnO nanorods largely bound by the prism planes. The high aspect ratio rods showed significantly higher visible light photocatalytic activity when compared to the lower aspect ratio structures. It is proposed that the higher activity is due to better charge separation in the elongated 1D structure. In addition, the fraction of unsaturated Zn2+ sites is higher on the {10 (1) over bar0} facets, leading to better adsorption of oxygen-containing species. These species enhance the production of reactive radicals that are responsible for photodegradation. The photocurrent for these ZnO nanostructures under solar light was measured and a direct correlation between photocurrent and aspect ratio was observed. Since the underlying mechanisms for photodegradation and photocurrent generation are directly related to the efficiency of electron-hole creation and separation, this observation corroborates that the charge separation processes are indeed enhanced in the high aspect ratio structures. The efficiency of photoconduction (electron-hole pair separation) could be further improved by attaching Au nanoparticles on ZnO, which can act as a sink for the electrons. This heterostructure exhibits a high chemisorption of oxygen, which facilitates the production of highly reactive radicals contributing to the high photoreactivity. The suggested mechanisms are applicable to other n-type semiconductor nanostructures with important implications for applications relating to energy and the environment.

This research article describes the large scale fabrication of ZnO nanorods of various shapes on Si(100) substrate, by using metalorganic precursor of Zn in solutions with microwave as the source of energy. This is a low temperature, environmental friendly and rapid thin film deposition process, where ZnO nanorods (1-3 mu m length) were grown only in 1-5 min of microwave irradiation. All as-synthesized nanorods are of single crystalline grown along the < 0001 > crystallographic direction. The coated nanorods were found to be highly dense having a thickness of similar to 1-3 mu m over the entire area 20 mm x 20 mm of the substrate. The ZnO thin film comprising of nanorods exhibits good adhesion with the substrate. A possible mechanism for the initial nucleation and growth of ZnO is discussed. A cross over from a strong visible light emission to an enhanced UV emission is observed, when the nature of the surfactants are varied from polymeric to ionic and nonionic. The position of the chromaticity coordinates in yellow region of the color space gives an impression of white light generation from these coatings by exciting with a blue laser.

A simple approach for obtaining room temperature ferroelectricity in ZnO rod structures at the nanoscale is reported. A systematic comparative study between two kinds of nanorods prepared by different processes reveals the physics behind it. It is observed that ZnO nanorods grown (in-situ) by a sol gel method on platinum substrate show ferroelectric behaviour. On the contrary, ZnO nanorods first grown by a sol gel method and then spin-coated on a platinum substrate (ex-situ) do not demonstrate this kind of feature. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms partially (002) and (100) plane oriented growth of both samples. From photoluminescence (PL) spectral analysis it is interpreted that oxygen vacancies/zinc interstitial defects, which arises from the large lattice mismatch between the Pt substrate and the ZnO nanorods grown thereon, and preferential ZnO growth along 002], can be causes of this type of phenomena. C-V characterization, P-E hysteresis loop along with piezoelectric force microscopy support this observation.

In this work, we have reported the synthesis of dahlia flower-like ZnO nanostructures consisting of human finger-like nanorods by the hydrothermal method at 120 degrees C and without using any capping agent. Optical properties of the samples, including UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics are determined by dispersing the samples in water as well as in ethanol media. The quenching of PL emission intensity along-with the red shifting of the PL emission peak are observed when the samples are dispersed in water in comparison to those obtained after dispersing the samples in ethanol. It has been found that PL emission characteristic, particularly the spectral nature of PL emission, of the samples remains almost unaltered (except some improvement in UV PL emission) even after thermally annealing it for 2 h at the temperature of 300 degrees C. Also the synthesized powder samples, kept in a plastic container, showed a very stable PL emission even after 15 months of synthesis. Therefore, the synthesized samples might be useful for their applications in future optoelectronics devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution. A novel flexible alloy substrate (Phynox, 50 mm thick) was used for the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods via a low-temperature solution growth method. The growth of ZnO nanorods was observed over a low temperature range of 60-90 degrees C for a growth duration of 4 hours. The as-synthesized nanorods were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for their morphology, crystallinity, microstructure and composition. The as-grown ZnO nanorods were observed to be relatively vertical to the substrate. However, the morphology of the ZnO nanorods in terms of their length, diameter and aspect ratio was found to vary with the growth temperature. The morphological variation was mainly due to the effects of the various relative growth rates observed at the different growth temperatures. The growth temperature influenced ZnO nanorods were also analyzed for their wetting (either hydrophobic or hydrophilic) properties. After carrying out multiple wetting behaviour analyses, it has been found that the as-synthesized ZnO nanorods are hydrophobic in nature. The ZnO nanorods have potential application possibilities in self-cleaning devices, sensors and actuators as well as energy harvesters such as nanogenerators.

Large quantities of single-crystalline ZnO nanorods and nanotubes have been prepared by the microwave, irradiation of a metalorganic complex of zinc, in the presence of a surfactant. The method is simple, fast, and inexpensive (as it uses a domestic microwave oven), and yields pure nanostructures of the hexagonal wurtzite phase of ZnO in min, and requires no conventional templating. The ZnO nanotubes formed have a hollow core with inner diameter varying from 140-160 nm and a wall of thickness, 40-50 nm. The length of nanorods and nanotubes varies in the narrow range of 500-600 nm. These nanostructures have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The ZnO nanorods and nanotubes are found by SAED to be single-crystalline. The growth process of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes has been investigated by varying the surfactant concentration and microwave irradiation time. Based on the various results obtained, a tentative and plausible mechanism for the formation of ZnO nanostructures is proposed.

A comparative morphological study of different ZnO nanostructures was carried out with different varying process parameters for energy harvesting. Molarity, temperature, growth duration and seed layer were such fundamental controlling parameters. The study brings out an outstanding piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 44.33 pm/V for vertically aligned ZnO nanorod structures, considered as the highest reported d(33) value for any kind of ZnO nanostructures. XRD analysis confirms wurtzite nature of this nanorod structure with 0001] as preferential growth direction. Semiconducting characteristic of nanorods was determined with temperature induced I/V characterization.
