The thermal properties and electrical-switching behavior of semiconducting chalcogenide SbxSe55-xTe45 (2 <= x <= 9) glasses have been investigated by alternating differential scanning calorimetry and electrical-switching experiments, respectively. The addition of Sb is found to enhance the glass forming tendency and stability as revealed by the decrease in non-reversing enthalpy Delta H-nr. and an increase in the glass-transition width Delta T-g. Further, the glass-transition temperature of SbxSe55-xTe45 glasses, which is a measure of network connectivity, exhibits a subtle increase, suggesting a meager network growth with the addition of Sb. The crystallization temperature is also observed to increase with Sb content. The SbxSe55-xTe45 glasses (2 <= x <= 9) are found to exhibit memory type of electrical switching, which can be attributed to the polymeric nature of network and high devitrifying ability. The metallicity factor has been found to dominate over the network connectivity and rigidity in the compositional dependence of switching voltage. which shows a profound decrease with the addition of Sb.

The detailed electronic structure of the n-v addition compound H2O·BF3 has been investigated for the first time by a combined use of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) augmented by MO calculations. The calculated molecular orbital energies of H2O·BF3 agree well with the UPS results and have been used to assign the electronic transitions obtained from EELS and to construct an orbital correlation diagram. The quasi-aromatic property of metal chelates of thio-beta-diketones has been studied by reacting them with phenylisocyanate, where addition takes place at the gamma-CH in a stepwise manner. Mono-thiodiketonates of Ni(II), Pd(II), cu(II) and Co(III) and the dithio-acetylacetonate of Ni(II) react with phenylisocyanate to produce mono-, di- and triphenylamido [with cobalt (III) only] substituted derivatives. In the case of tris (ethylthioacetoacetato) cobalt (III), it is found that the reaction with phenylisocyanate gives two isomers, a chocolate coloured isomer in which the phenylamido carbonyl is not coordinated while the green coloured isomer has bonding through phenylemido carbonyl oxygen. The reactions of the thiodiketonates have been compared with those of beta-diketonates and beta-ketoiminates. The reaction products have been characterised by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, and electronic, IR and 1H NMR spectral studies.

The wear resistance of high chromium iron is well recorded. However, the same is not the case as regards the use of manganese at higher percentages in high chromium irons and its influence on wear behaviour. Hence, this work highlights the slurry wear characteristics of chromium 16–19%) iron following the introduction of manganese at two levels i.e. 5 and 10%. It is known that the wear properties are dictated by the microstructural features. To alter the structure, the cooling rate of casting has been varied by adopting two different types of moulds (i.e. sand and metal) and subsequently subjecting to thermal treatment. The as-cast and heat treated samples are examined for microstructure and then evaluated for hardness and slurry erosion properties. As the manganese content is increased from 5 to 10%, the hardness showed a decrease in value both in the as-cast and heat treated conditions. The slurry erosion loss, expectedly, showed an increase irrespective of the sample condition (i.e. mould type/heat treatment adopted). The findings are corroborated with the microstructural features obtained through optical and scanning electron microscopy.

The effect of the addition of glassy phases on the microstructure and dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics was investigated. Both single-component (B2O3) and multi-cornponent (30wt% BaO-60wt% B2O3-10wt% SiO2 (BBS)) glass systems were chosen to study their effect on the density, microstructure and dielectric properties of CCTO. Addition of an optimum amount of B2O3 glass facilitated grain growth and an increase in dielectric constant. However, further increase in the B2O3 content resulted in its segregation at the grain boundaries associated with a reduction in the grain size. In contrast, BBS glass addition resulted in well-faceted grains and increase in the dielectric constant and decrease in the dielectric loss. An internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) model was invoked to correlate the dielectric constant with the grain size in these samples. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Addition of hydrogen cyanide to 9-methyl-Δ4-octalone-3 (IIb), as a model, yielded both cis- and trans-ketonitriles the configurations of which are assigned on the basis of IR spectra of the hydrolysed products. Similar addition of hydrogen cyanide to 9β-methyl-8β-hydroxy-Δ4-octalone-3 (IIc) gave the corresponding cis- and trans-hydroxy-keto-nitriles, configurations of which were proved by their conversion into cis- and trans-keto-nitriles obtained in the model study. In contrast to the model experiment where the trans-product predominated, the cis-isomer was the major product of addition to IIc.

The addition reactions of alcohols, ROH (R = CH3, C2H5 n-C3H7, i-C3H7 and t-C4H9), to p-bromophenylisothiocyanate show that the rates decrease in the order, CH3OH> C2H5OH> n-C3H7OH> i-C3H7OH> t-C4H9OH, although the basicities of the alcohols vary in the reverse order. The results indicate the greater importance of steric factors as compared with polar factors. Evidence is also presented for the formation of a complex between the isothiocyanate and the alcohol in the first stage of the addition reaction. In the addition of aniline to substituted phenylisothiocyanates the rate data give a satisfactory linear correlation with Hammett σ constants and the results clearly show that electron-withdrawing groups favour the addition reaction. The addition of aniline to alkyl isothiocyanates have been studied in order to find out the nature of alkyl group interaction in these derivatives. Kinetic studies on the addition of substituted anilines to phenylisothiocyanate show that the rate of reaction increases with the electron-donating ability of the substituents on the aniline as also the basicity of the aniline.

The addition reaction of alcohols to substituted phenylisothiocyanates is found to be a second-order reaction. The reaction is catalysed by triethylamine. First-order rate constants of the addition reaction have been determined in excess of ethanol, for a number of substituted phenylisothiocyanates and the rate data give a satisfactory linear correlation with Hammett σ constants of groups. While the energies of activation vary randomly with substitution, the entropies of activation bear a linear relationship to the energies of activation. Infra-red spectra indicate that the thiourethanes which are the products of the addition reaction exist in the thioamide form. The most prominent resonance form which can satisfactorily explain both the kinetic and infrared data, has been suggested.

The (overall trans) addition of hydrogen chloride to cyclohex-1- enecarbonitrile in anhydrous alcoholic media proceeds to give cis-2-chlorocyclohexanecarboxylate (together with some cis-2- chlorocyclohexanecarboxamide): no corresponding products with the trans-configuration are detectable. In anhydrous ether the addition proceeds to give a single isomer, presumably cis-, of 2-chlorocyclohexanecarbonitrile, indicating that the configuration of the products may not be equilibrium-controlled in alcoholic media. An examination of the steric factors indicates that the transition state for protonation of the presumed intermediate, 2-chlorocyclohexylidenemethylideneimine, leading to cis-product is favoured if interaction between the lateral π-orbital of the C-N double bond and the lone-pairs on the chlorine atom at the 2-position is large. Consideration of interactions in the transition states meets Zimmerman's criticism that invoking A1, 3 interaction existing in ground states to explain product configuration takes insufficient account of the Curtin-Hammett principle.

Raman spectra of single crystals of diglycine hydrochloride, diglycine hydrobromide and diglycine nitrate have been recorded for the first time. λ 2536·5 resonance radiation of mercury has been used as exciter. The spectrum of diglycine hydrochloride exhibits 10 low frequency lines and 41 lines due to internal oscillations, while that of diglycine hydrobromide exhibits 11 lines and 41 lines respectively. In the case of diglycine nitrate 46 lines have been recorded, of which 10 belong to the lattice spectrum. These spectra are compared with the Raman spectra of triglycine sulphate and α-glycine and proper assignments have been given to the internal oscillations.

Small additions of Cu to the SUS 304H, a high temperature austenitic stainless steel, enhance its high temperature strength and creep resistance. As Cu is known to cause embrittlement, the effect of Cu on room temperature mechanical properties that include fracture toughness and fatigue crack threshold of as-solutionized SUS 304H steel were investigated in this work. Experimental results show a linear reduction in yield and ultimate strengths with Cu addition of up to 5 wt.% while ductility drops markedly for 5 wt.% Cu alloy. However, the fracture toughness and the threshold stress intensity factor range for fatigue crack initiation were found to be nearly invariant with Cu addition. This is because the fracture in this alloy is controlled by the debonding from the matrix of chromium carbide precipitates, as evident from fractography. Cu, on the other hand, remains either in solution or as nano-precipitates and hence does not influence the fracture characteristics. It is concluded that small additions of Cu to 304H will not have adverse effects on its fracture and fatigue behavior. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. Orbital energies and electronic transition energies of BH3·H2S and BH3·CO obtained from ultraviolet (HeI) photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy are discussed in the light of quantum mechanical calculations. BH3·H2O has been characterized, for the first time, by means of the HeI spectrum and the ionization energies assigned to the various orbitals based on calculations.
