A reliable protection against direct lightning hit is very essential for satellite launch pads. In view of this, suitable protection systems are generally employed. The evaluation of efficacy of the lightning protection schemes among others requires an accurate knowledge of the consequential potential rise at the struck point and the current injected into soil at the earth termination. The present work has made a detailed effort to deduce these quantities for the lightning protection scheme of the Indian satellite launch pad-I. A reduced scale model of the system with a frequency domain approach is employed for the experimental study. For further validation of the experimental approach, numerical simulations using numerical electromagnetic code-2 are also carried out on schemes involving single tower. The study results on the protection system show that the present design is quite safe with regard to top potential rise. It is shown that by connecting ground wires to the tower, its base current and, hence, the soil potential rise can be reduced. An evaluation of an alternate design philosophy involving insulated mast scheme is also made. The potential rise in that design is quantified and the possibility of a flashover to supporting tower is briefly looked into. The supporting tower is shown to have significant induced currents.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in folate metabolism and is involved in DNA synthesis, DNA repair and DNA methylation. Genetic polymorphisms of this enzyme have been shown to impact several diseases, including cancer. Leukemias are malignancies arising from rapidly proliferating hematopoietic cells having great requirement of DNA synthesis. This case-control study was undertaken to analyze the association of the MTHFR gene polymorphisms 677 C"T and 1298 A"C and the risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six patients aged below 15 years with a confirmed diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 99 matched controls were taken for this study. Analysis of the polymorphisms was done using the polymerase chain reaction -restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Results: Frequency of MTHFR 677 CC and CT were 85.9% and 14.1% in the controls, and 84.9% and 15.1% in the cases. The 'T' allele frequency was 7% and 7.5% in cases and controls respectively. The frequency of MTHFR 1298 AA, AC, and CC were 28.3%, 55.6% and 16.1% for controls and 23.3%, 59.3% and 17.4% for cases respectively. The 'C' allele frequency for 1298 A→C was 43.9% and 47% respectively for controls and cases. The odds ratio (OR) for C677T was 1.08 (95% CI 0.48- 2.45, p = 0.851) and OR for A1298C was 1.29(95% CI 0.65-2.29, p = 0.46) and OR for 1298 CC was 1.31 (95% CI 0.53-3.26, p =0.56). The OR for the combined heterozygous status (677 CT and 1298 AC) was 1.94 (95% CI 0.58 -6.52, p = 0.286). Conclusion: The prevalence of 'T' allele for 677 MTHFR polymorphism was low in the population studied. There was no association between MTHFR 677 C→T and 1298 A→C gene polymorphisms and risk of ALL, which may be due to the small sample size.

When rats were administered methyl isocyanate (MIC) by inhalation or subcutaneous route it produced severe hyperglycemia, clinical lactic acidosis, highly elevated plasma urea, and reduced plasma cholinesterase activity with unaltered erythrocytc acetyl cholinesterase activity. Irrespective of the route of administration, MIC also caused severe hypothermia, which was not ameliorated by prior administration of atropine sulphate. Acute toxic effects of MIC are essentially similar by either route except for the intensity of the effects

Methyl isocyanate (MIC) interaction with the rabbit erythrocyte membrane increased the fluidity of the membrane and decreased the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes both in vitro and in vivo in rabbits intoxicated with MIC subcutaneously. MIC inhibited both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities of erythrocytes dose-dependently in vitro, while in vivo a decreased trend in ATPase activity with unaltered AChE activity was observed. MIC also caused significant decrease in plasma sodium level with corresponding increase in potassium level in rabbits. The observed effects are due to MIC, per se, as the hydrolysis products of MIC, methylamine and N,Nprime-dimethylurea did not affect the erythrocyte fluidity and enzymes activities both in vitro and in vivo while they increased the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in vivo in rabbits administered subcutaneously in equimolar concentration to MIC dosage. Inhibition of Na+-K+-dependent ATPase with altered permeability to cations and also probably water transport of plasma membrane due to MIC interaction are envisaged.

Unilateral ischemia in the right cerebral hemisphere of the rat was induced by ligation of the right common carotid artery coupled with controlled hemorrhage to produce hypotension (25±8 mm/Hg). Where indicated after 30 min of ischemia, the withdrawn blood was reinfused to restore arterial pressure to normal. Mitochondria isolated from the ipsilateral hemisphere after 30 min of ischemia showed significantly lower respiratory rates than the organelles isolated from the contralateral side. Oxidation of NAD+-linked substrates was more sensitive to inhibition in ischemia (30%) than was of ferrocytochromec (12%), succinate oxidation being intermediate. The activities of membrane-bound dehydrogenases (both NADH and succinate-linked) were also significantly lowered. Ischemia did not affect the cytochrome content of mitochondria. Respiratory activity (NAD+-linked) of mitochondria isolated from the ipsilateral hemisphere was twice as sensitive to inhibition by fatty acid as was of preparations from the contralateral side. Mitochondria isolated from cerebral cortex after 90 min of post-ischemic reperfusion showed no significant improvement in the rate of substrate oxidation. Adenine nucleotide translocase activity and energy-dependent Ca2+ uptake, both of which decreased significantly in mitochondria isolated from the ischemic brain, showed little recovery, on reperfusion. These observations suggested the strong possibility that the deleterious effects of ischemia on mitochondrial respiratory function might be mediated by free fatty acids that are known to accumulate in large amounts in ischemic tissues. The pattern of inhibition of ATPase activity was consistent with this view.

Depression is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in patients with preexisting cardiac illness. A decrease in cardiac vagal function as suggested by a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV) or heart period variability has been linked to sudden death in patients with cardiac disease as well as in normal controls. Recent studies have shown decreased vagal function in cardiac patients with depression as well as in depressed patients without cardiac illness. In this study, we compared 20 h awake and sleep heart period nonlinear measures using quantification of nonlinearity and chaos in two groups of patients with major depression and ischemic heart disease (mean age 59-60 years) before and after 6 weeks of treatment with paroxetine or nortriptyline. Patients received paroxetine, 20-30 mg/day or nortriptyline targeted to 190-570 nmol/l for 6 weeks. For HRV analysis, 24 patients were included in the paroxetine treatment study and 20 patients in the nortriptyline study who had at least 20,000 s of awake data. The ages of these groups were 60.4 +/- 10.5 years for paroxetine and 60.8 +/- 13.4 years for nortriptyline. There was a significant decrease in the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) after treatment with nortriptyline but not paroxetine. There were also significant decreases in nonlinearity scores on S-netPR and S-netGS after nortriptyline, which may be due to a decrease in cardiac vagal modulation of HRV. S-netGS and awake LLE were the most significant variables that contributed to the discrimination of postparoxetine and postnortriptyline groups even with the inclusion of time and frequency domain measures. These findings suggest that nortriptyline decreases the measures of chaos probably through its stronger vagolytic effects on cardiac autonomic function compared with paroxetine, which is in agreement with previous clinical and preclinical reports. Nortriptyline was also associated with a significant decrease in nonlinearity scores, which may be due to anticholinergic and/or sympatholytic effects. As depression is associated with a strong risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, one should be careful about using any drug that adversely affects cardiac vagal function. Copyright (C) 2002 S. The insulated mast scheme for the lightning protection system can be found in a few practical designs. Many advantages over conventional protection system are some times envisaged. However, the technical literature on the analysis of such schemes and further quantification of their protection efficacy is rather scarce. As a first step to address this problem, the present work is taken up and the potential rise at the top and ground end currents in insulating mast scheme with single tower is investigated for several tower heights and pertinent values of other parameters. The quantities that are investigated are the potential difference across the insulation and ground end currents for both tower and the ground wires. Quantifications are carried out for the relevant range of stroke current front times. The influence of number of ground wires, their earthing location and to a limited extent, the length of the insulating support have been ascertained. Some relevant discussion on insulation strength is made. These findings are quite novel and aid in quantification of the practical efficacy of the insulated mast scheme. The level of induction to the support tower and possible flashover to the same are not in favour of this scheme.

A lightning return stroke model for a downward flash is proposed. The model includes underlying physical phenomena governing return stroke evolution, namely, electric field due to charge distributed along the leader and cloud, transient enhancement of series channel conductance at the bridging regime, and the nonlinear variation of channel conductance, which supports the return stroke current evolution. Thermal effects of free burning arc at the stroke wave front and its impact on channel conductance are studied. A first-order arc model for determining the dynamic channel conductance along with a field-dependent conductivity for corona sheath is used in the model. The model predicts consistent current propagation along the channel with regard to current amplitude and return stroke velocity. The model is also capable of predicting the remote electromagnetic fields that are consistent with the experimental observations.
