The oxidative degradation of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), a water soluble polymer, was studied at various temperatures with different concentrations of persulfates, potassium persulfate (KPS), ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium persulfate (SPS). The photodegradation of PAA was also examined with APS as oxidizer. The degraded samples were analyzed for the time evolution of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography. A theoretical model based on the continuous distribution kinetics was developed that accounted for the polymer degradation and the dissociation of persulfate. The rate coefficients for the oxidative and photooxidative degradation of PAA were determined from the parametric fit of the model with experimental data. The rate of degradation increased with increasing amount of persulfate in both oxidative and photooxidative degradation. The rate of degradation also increased with increasing temperature in the case of oxidative degradation.

The DNA increment method, designed for measuring the increment in the amount of DNA after inhibition of initiation of fresh rounds of replication initiation was employed to measure the rate of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) chain growth in Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv growing in Youman and Karlson's medium at 37°C with a generation time of 24 h and also in relatively fast growing species like Mycobacterium smegmatis and Escherichia coli. From the results obtained, the time required for a DNA replication fork to traverse the chromosome from origin to terminus (C period) was calculated. The chain elongation rates of DNA of the three organisms was determined from the C period and the known genome sizes assuming that all these genomes have a single replication origin and bidirectional replication fork. The rate for M. tuberculosis was 3,200 nucleotides per min about 11 times slower than that of M. smegmatis and about 13–18 times slower than that of E. coli.

Gibberellic acid (GA3) induced a marked elongation of 2.5-centimeter shoot tips of Cuscuta chinensis Lamk. cultured in vitro. In terms of the absolute amount of elongation, this growth may be the largest reported for an isolated plant system. The response to hormone was dependent on an exogenous carbohydrate supply. The hormone-stimulated growth was due to both cell division and cell elongation. The growth response progressively decreased if GA3 was given at increasingly later times after culturing, but the decreased growth response could be restored by the application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) to the apex. Explants deprived of GA3 gradually lost their ability to transport IAA basipetally, but this ability was also restored by auxin application. The observations are explained on the basis that: (a) the growth of Cuscuta shoot tip in vitro requires, at least, both an auxin and a gibberellin; and (b) in the absence of gibberellin the cultured shoot tip explants lose the ability to produce and/or transport auxin.

Dithiocarbamates have been estimated previously by reaction with a strong acid, the carbon disulfide evolved being converted into a xanthate and the latter estimated iodimetrically. In the present method, a water-soluble dithiocarbamate is reacted with a decinormal mineral acid and the excess acid is determined to compute the amount of dithiocarbamate present. This method is applicable for the determination of a dithiocarbamate in a mixture containing thiuram disulfide.

Thermal degradation of copolyurethanes based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and poly(12-hydroxy stearic acid-co-TMP) ester polyol (PEP) with varying compositions has been studied by thermo-gravimetric and pyrolysis-GC techniques. The copolyurethanes were found to decompose in multiple stages and the kinetic parameters were found to be dependent on the method of their evaluation. The activation energy for the initial stage of decomposition was found to increase, and for the main stage decreases with the increase in PEP content. The pyrolysis-GC studies on the ammonium perchlorate filled copolyurethanes (solid propellants) showed that the major products during the pyrolysis were C-2, C-3 hydrocarbons and butadiene. The amount of C-2 fraction in the pyrolyslate increased with solid loading, as well as with the HTPB content in the copolyurethanes. A linear relationship apparently exists between the amount of C-2 fraction and the burn rates of the solid propellants. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The utility of rice husk as an adsorbent for metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper from acid mine water was assessed. The adsorption isotherms exhibited Langmuirian behavior and were endothermic in nature. The free energy values for adsorption of the chosen metal ions onto rice husk were found to be highly negative attesting to favorable interaction. Over 99% Fe3+, 98% of Fe2+ and Zn2+ and 95% Cu2+ uptake was achieved from acid mine water, with a concomitant increase in the pH value by two units using rice husk. The remediation studies carried out on acid mine water and simulated acid mine water pretreated with rice husk indicated successful growth of Desulfotomaculum nigrificans (D. nigrificans). The amount of sulphate bioreduction in acid mine water at an initial pH of 5.3 was enhanced by D. nigrificans from 21% to 40% in the presence of rice husk filtrate supplemented with carbon and nitrogen. In simulated acid mine water with fortified husk filtrate, the sulphate reduction was even more extensive, with an enhancement to 73%. Concurrently, almost 90% Fe2+, 89% Zn2+ and 75% Cu2+ bioremoval was attained from simulated acid mine water. Metal adsorption by rice husk was confirmed in desorption experiments in which almost complete removal of metal ions from the rice husk was achieved after two elutions using 1 M HCl. The possible mechanisms of metal ion adsorption onto rice husk and sulphate reduction using D. nigrificans are discussed.

The initial structural alteration of RNAase A due to acid denaturation (0.5 N HCl, 30 degrees C) that accompanies deamidation (without altering enzymic activity) has been dectected by spectrophotometric titration, fluorescence and ORD/CD measurements. It is shown that acid treated RNAase A has an altered conformation at neutral pH, 25 degrees C. This is characterized by the increased accessibility of buried tyrosine residue(s) towards the solvent. The most altered conformation of RNAase A is found in the 10 h acid-treated derivative. This has about 1.5 additional exposed tyrosine residues and a lesser amount of secondary structure than RNAase A. All three methods (titration, fluorescence and CD) established that the structural transition of RNAase A is biphasic. The first phase occurs within 1 h and the resulting subtle conformational change is constant up to 7 h. Following this, after the release of 0.55 mol of ammonia, the major conformational change begins. The altered conformation of the acid-denatured RNAase A could be reversed completely to the native state through a conformational change induced by substrate analogs like 2'- or 3'-CMP. Thus the monodeamidated derivative isolated from the acid-denatured RNAase A by phosphate is very similar to RNAase A in over-all conformation. The results suggest the possibility of flexibility in the RNAase A molecule that does not affect its catalytic activity, as probed through the tyrosine residues.

Electro-oxidation of methanol was studied on carbon-supported Pt---Sn/C electrodes in silcotungstic acid (SiWA) at various concentrations. The porous-carbon electrodes employing Pt---Sn/C catalyst have been characterized using chemical analyses, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in conjunction with electrochemistry. The presence of Pt---Sn and Pt3Sn alloys along with Pt and SnO2 phases in the catalyst were identified by XRD. XPS analysis showed a lower amount of PtO species in the Pt---Sn/C catalyst with respect to the corresponding Pt/C sample. From the steady-state galvanostatic polarization data on Pt---Sn/C electrodes in SiWA, it is inferred that a one-electron process is the rate determining step. The performance of the electrodes in 0.084 M SiWA was better than in 2.5 M H2SO4 under similar conditions up to load currents of about 100 mA cm−2 indicating the promoting behaviour of the electrolyte. At currents larger than 100 mA cm−2, the performance of the electrodes in 0.084 SiWA was poorer than that in 2.5 M H2SO4 mainly due to the dominance of mass polarization in the former owing to the large size of keggin units associated with the structure of SiWA. This aspect was supported by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance studies on Pt---Sn/C electrodes. Simulation of the electrochemical impedance response for the oxidation of methanol in SiWA was carried out using the equivalent electrical circuit model.

Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed. The paper brings out the role of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on the volume change behaviour of natural black cotton soil with 1N sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as pore fluid. Natural black cotton soil contained predominantly montmorillonite [Ca0.2(Al,Mg)2Si4 O10 (OH)2 .4H2O] along with other minerals such as amesite [(Mg Fe)2 Al (Si Al)2 O5 (OH)4], kalsilite [KAlSiO4] and quartz [SiO2]. The calcitic soil, reacted with H2SO4 during consolidation testing, showed the presence of the new mineral yavapaiite [K Fe(SO4)2]. Consequently, the carbonate soil treated with 1N H2SO4 led to higher swell at seating load and more compression upon loading than the soil with no carbonate. The swelling increased with increase in the amount of carbonate present in the soil.

Inverse suspension polymerization was carried out to synthesize poly(acrylic acid-co-sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). The equilibrium swelling capacities of the SAPs, determined by swelling them in DI water, were found to vary with the acrylamide (AM) content. The SAPs were used to adsorb four cationic dyes (Acriflavine, Auramine-O, Azure-I and Pyronin-Y). The effect of AM content in the SAPs on the adsorption of the cationic dyes was investigated. Different initial concentrations of Azure-I were used with the same amount of the SAP to explore the effect of initial dye concentration on the adsorption. The effect of the adsorbent amount was investigated by taking different amounts of SAP with a fixed initial concentration of Acriflavine. The kinetics of the dye adsorption was modeled by a first order model and the equilibrium amount of the dye adsorbed, adsorption rate coefficients, removal efficiency and partition coefficients were determined. Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) of acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, and acrylamide (AM), crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization. The equilibrium swelling capacities of the SAPs were determined and these decreased with increasing AM content. The adsorption of the two cationic dyes, methylene blue and rhodamine 6G, on the dry as well as equilibrium swollen SAPs was investigated. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium per unit weight of the SAPs and the rate constants of adsorption were determined. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium by the SAPs decreased with increasing mol % of AM in the SAPs. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium was almost equal for the dry and equilibrium swollen SAPs. However, the equilibrium swollen SAPs adsorbed dyes at a higher rate than the dry SAPs. The higher rate of adsorption was attributed to the availability of all the anionic groups present in the fully elongated conformation of the SAPs in the equilibrium swollen state. The effect of initial dye concentration on the adsorption was also investigated and the adsorption was described by Langmuir adsorption isotherms. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
