A novel, cost effective,environment-friendly and energetically beneficial alternative method for the synthesis of giant dielectric pseudo-perovskite material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) is presented. The method involved auto-combustion of an aqueous precursor solution in oxygen atmosphere with the help of external fuels and is capable of producing high amount of CCTO at ultra-low temperature, in the combustion residue itself. The amount of phase generated was observed to be highly dependent on the combustion process i.e. on the nature and amount of external-fuels added for combustion. Two successful fuel combinations capable of producing reasonably higher amount of the desired compound were investigated. On a structural characterization grain size was observed to decrease drastically to nano-dimension compared to submicron-size that was obtained in a traditional sol-gel combustion and subsequent cacination method. Therefore, the method reported can produce nano-crystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramic matrix at an ultra-low temperature and is expected to be applicable for other multifunctional perovskite oxide materials.

Ni0.4Zn0.2Mn0.4Fe2O4 nanopowders were prepared by auto-combustion method. The as-synthesized powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo-gravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and the powders were densified at different temperatures 400 degrees C, 500 degrees C, 600 degrees C and 700 degrees C/4 hrs using conventional sintering method. The sintered samples were characterized by XRD and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The bulk densities of the samples were increased with an increase of sintering temperature. The grain sizes of all the samples vary in between 18 nm to 30 nm. The hysteresis loops show high saturation magnetization and low coercivity, indicates that it is a soft material. The incremental permeability (permeability with magnetic field superposition) was influenced by both Delta M and H-c. A sample with higher initial permeability and favoured the attainment of a higher incremental permeability. The Q-factor was mainly determined by the sintered density and microstructure. To summarize, a uniform and dense microstructure with relatively small average grain size is favourable for obtaining better dc-bias-superposition characteristics, including permeability and Q-factor.

In the present work, Co1-xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the low-temperature auto-combustion method. The thermal decomposition process was investigated by means of differential and thermal gravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) that showed the precursor yield the final product above 450 degrees C. The phase purity and crystal lattice symmetry were estimated from X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural features observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that the fine clustered particles were formed with an increase in average grain size with Mn2+ content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the formation of spinel ferrite. Room temperature magnetization measurements showed that the magnetization M-s increases from 29 to 60 emu/g and H-c increases from 13 to 28 Oe with increase in Mn2+ content, which implies that these materials may be applicable for magnetic data storage and recording media. In last 30 years innovative research in the area of auto exhaust catalysis is being developed and CeO2 has been found to play a major role in this area due to its unique redox properties. In this review, auto exhaust emission and its impact on earth’s environment, global concern and recent advances in science and technology in automotive exhaust catalysis have been documented. A new preparative method of dispersing metal ions by solution combustion technique over CeO2 and TiO2 resulting mainly Ce1−xMxO2−δ, Ti1−xMxO2−δ and Ce1−x−yTixMyO2−δ (M = Pd, Rh and Pt) catalysts, structure of these materials, their catalytic properties towards auto exhaust catalysis, structure–property relation and mechanism of catalytic reactions are accounted here. In these materials, metal ions are incorporated into substrate matrix to a certain limit in the solid solution form and we have established a new direction in heterogeneous catalysis by turning to the concept of dispersed metal ions as catalytically active sites from the conventionally nurtured idea of metal particles as active centers for catalysis.

Ho3+ (0.25-7 mol%) doped Sr2CeO4 nanophosphors were synthesized by solution combustion method using urea as fuel. The structural properties of the nanophosphors were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction studies (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. UV-Visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic techniques were used for analysing the optical properties of the nanoparticles. PXRD and TEM results revealed the formation of Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanocrystalline particles with orthorhombic crystal structure. From the UV-Vis studies the optical band gap energy found to decrease from 5.9 to 5.74 eV with increase in dopant concentration. The PL spectra exhibit the broad excitation band from 200 to 400 nm which concurs well with the commercial near UV LED. The PL spectra vary with the dopant content due to energy transfer from the host to the activator. In this present work we demonstrate that color tuning of phosphor can be achieved by merely varying the Ho3+ ions concentration. The CIE and CCT chromaticity coordinates suggests Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanophosphors may be potentially applicable as promising single - phased phosphors for lighting applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The nature of surface and subsurface reactions in polymer combustion is poorly underst0od.l During the burning of thermoplastic polymers a melt layer is observed on the surface, and below the melt layer there is thermal wave penetration. But the exact thickness of the melt layer and the thickness of the thermal wave penetration have not been precisely measured, although a qualitative idea has been given.

The effect of transition metal oxides (Fe2O3, MnO2, Ni2O3 and Co2O3) on polystyrene/ammonium perchlorate propellant systems has been examined. The mechanism of action of the oxides in increasing the burning rate was examined by studying the effect of the oxides on the thermal decomposition and combustion of the oxidizer and the propellant. It has been concluded that one of the mechanisms by which the oxides act is by promoting the charge-transfer process, which is indicated by the enhancement of the electron-transfer process in ammonium perchlorate and by the correlation between the redox potential of the metal ions and the corresponding burning rates of the propellant.

Because of growing environmental concerns and increasingly stringent regulations governing auto emissions, new more efficient exhaust catalysts are needed to reduce the amount of pollutants released from internal combustion engines. To accomplish this goal, the major pollutants in exhaust-CO, NOx, and unburned hydrocarbons-need to be fully converted to CO2, N-2, and H2O. Most exhaust catalysts contain nanocrystalline noble metals (Pt, Pd, Rh) dispersed on oxide supports such as Al2O3 or SiO2 promoted by CeO2. However, in conventional catalysts, only the surface atoms of the noble metal particles serve as adsorption sites, and even in 4-6 nm metal particles, only 1/4 to 1/5 of the total noble metal atoms are utilized for catalytic conversion. The complete dispersion of noble metals can be achieved only as ions within an oxide support. In this Account, we describe a novel solution to this dispersion problem: a new solution combustion method for synthesizing dispersed noble metal ionic catalysts. We have synthesized nanocrystalline, single-phase Ce1-xMxO2-delta and Ce1-x-yTiyMxO2-delta (M = Pt, Pd, Rh; x = 0,01-0.02, delta approximate to x, y = 0.15-0.25) oxides in fluorite structure, In these oxide catalysts, pt(2+), Pd2+, or Rh3+ ions are substituted only to the extent of 1-2% of Ce4+ ion. Lower-valent noble metal ion substitution in CeO2 creates oxygen vacancies. Reducing molecules (CO, H-2, NH3) are adsorbed onto electron-deficient noble metal ions, while oxidizing (02, NO) molecules are absorbed onto electron-rich oxide ion vacancy sites. The rates of CO and hydrocarbon oxidation and NOx reduction (with >80% N-2 selectivity) are 15-30 times higher in the presence of these ionic catalysts than when the same amount of noble metal loaded on an oxide support is used. Catalysts with palladium ion dispersed in CeO2 or Ce1-xTixO2 were far superior to Pt or Rh ionic catalysts. Therefore, we have demonstrated that the more expensive Pt and Rh metals are not necessary in exhaust catalysts. We have also grown these nanocrystalline ionic catalysts on ceramic cordierite and have reproduced the results we observed in powder material on the honeycomb catalytic converter. Oxygen in a CeO2 lattice is activated by the substitution of Ti ion, as well as noble metal ions. Because this substitution creates longer Ti-O and M-O bonds relative to the average Ce-O bond within the lattice, the materials facilitate high oxygen storage and release. The interaction among M-0/Mn+, Ce4+/Ce3+, and Ti4+/Ti3+ redox couples leads to the promoting action of CeO2, activation of lattice oxygen and high oxygen storage capacity, metal support interaction, and high rates of catalytic activity in exhaust catalysis.

A systematic study was undertaken on the combustion and thermal decomposition of pelletized Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) to investigate the effects of pelletizing pressure and dwell time. At constant pressure, increasing the dwell time results in an increase in the burning rate up to a maximum and thereafter decreases it. The dwell time required for the pellets to have maximum burning rate is a function of pressure. The maximum burning rate is the same for all the pressures used and is also unaffected by increasing, to the range 90-250 μ, the particle size of AP used. In order to explain the occurrence of a maximum in burning rate, pellets were examined for their thermal sensitivities, physical nature and the changes occurring during pelletization with dwell time and pressure. The variations are argued in terms of increasing density, formation of defects such as dislocations leading to an increase in the number of reactive sites, followed by their partial annihilation at longer dwell times due to flow of material during pelletization.

The participation of aluminum in the decomposition reaction of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is enhanced if magnesium is added—either as a mixture of Al and Mg powders or as an alloy of Mg in Al. The differential thermal analyses of the compositions show a sensitization in the temperatures of decomposition, as well as increase in the heat of reaction. The AP-Mg and Ap-(Mg---Li) alloy pellets also show increased reactivity. The burning rates of AP-(Al-10% Mg) alloy pellets increase with increase in the alloy content, while calorimetric values peak at 40% alloy content. The combustion product gases of AP-40% (Al-10% Mg) alloy contain large quantities of hydrogen.

A study of the burning rates of compressed mixtures of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and trimethylammonium perchlorate (TMAP) has been carried out at ambient pressure. The overall increase in the linear burning rate, showing a maximum at a composition having 80% TMAP, has been discussed in terms of factors such as stoichiometry, presence of faster burning component, and eutectic melt formation. The thermal decomposition studies of the mixtures, using isothermal thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis techniques, indicate the possibility of eutectic melt formation.

The heats of combustion of mono-, di-, tri- and tetramethylammonium perchlorates have been determined by bomb calorimetry. The data have been used to explain why the thermal behavior of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is considerably modified in presence of these compounds as shown by differential thermal analysis. Above a particular concentration of methylammonium perchlorate (MAP), AP ignites in a single step around 290°C. The minimum concentration of a MAP (mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-) needed to cause ignition of AP in a single step depends on intramolecular “elemental stoichiometric coefficient” of the mixtures that has the same value regardless of the MAP. Furthermore, the calorimetric values of these mixtures are the same. The heat evolved on ignition of such a composition appears to determine the lower concentration limit of combustion of its mixture with AP.
