The plane problem of load transfer from an elastic interference or clearance fit pin to a large elastic sheet with a perfectly smooth interface is solved. As the load on the pin is monotonically increased, the pin-hole interface is in partial contact above certain critical load in interference fit and throughout the loading range in clearance fit.Such situations result in mixed boundary-value problems with moving boundaries and the arc of contact varies nonlinearly with applied load. These problems are analyzed by an inverse technique in which the arcs of contact/separation are prescribed and the causative loads are evaluated. A direct method of analysis is adopted using biharmonic polar trigonometric stress functions and a simple collocation method for satisfying the boundary conditions. A unified analytical formulation is achieved for interference and clearance fits. The solutions for the linear problem of push fits are inherent in the unified analysis. Numerical results highlighting the effects of pin and sheet elasticity parameters are presented.

The effects of tangential friction at pin—hole interfaces are appropriately modelled for the analysis of fasteners in large composite (orthotropic) plate loaded along its edges. The pin—hole contact could be of interference, clearance or neat fit. When the plate load is monotonically increased, interference fits give rise to receding contact, whereas clearance fits result in advancing contact. In either case, the changing contact situations lead to non-linear moving boundary value problems. The neat fit comes out as a special case in which the contact and separation regions are invariant with the applied load level and so the problem remains linear. The description of boundary conditions in the presence of tangential friction, will depend on whether the problem is one of advancing or receding contact, advancing contact presenting a special problem. A model is developed for the limiting case of a rigid pin and an ideally rough interface (infinitely large friction coefficient). The non-linearity resulting from the continuously varying proportions of contact and separation at the interface, is handled by an “Inverse Formulation” which was successfully applied earlier by the authors for smooth (zero friction) interfacial conditions. The additional difficulty introduced by advancing contact is handled by adopting a “Marching Solution”. The modelling and the procedure are illustrated in respect of symmetric plate load cases. Numerical results are presented bringing out the effects of interfacial friction and plate orthotropy on load-contact relations and plate stresses.

A continuum method of analysis is presented in this paper for the problem of a smooth rigid pin in a finite composite plate subjected to uniaxial loading. The pin could be of interference, push or clearance fit. The plate is idealized to an orthotropic sheet. As the load on the plate is progressively increased, the contact along the pin-hole interface is partial above certain load levels in all three types of fit. In misfit pins (interference or clearance), such situations result in mixed boundary value problems with moving boundaries and in all of them the arc of contact and the stress and displacement fields vary nonlinearly with the applied load. In infinite domains similar problems were analysed earlier by ‘inverse formulation’ and, now, the same approach is selected for finite plates. Finite outer domains introduce analytical complexities in the satisfaction of boundary conditions. These problems are circumvented by adopting a method in which the successive integrals of boundary error functions are equated to zero. Numerical results are presented which bring out the effects of the rectangular geometry and the orthotropic property of the plate. The present solutions are the first step towards the development of special finite elements for fastener joints.

A special finite element (FASNEL) is developed for the analysis of a neat or misfit fastener in a two-dimensional metallic/composite (orthotropic) plate subjected to biaxial loading. The misfit fasteners could be of interference or clearance type. These fasteners, which are common in engineering structures, cause stress concentrations and are potential sources of failure. Such cases of stress concentration present considerable numerical problems for analysis with conventional finite elements. In FASNEL the shape functions for displacements are derived from series stress function solutions satisfying the governing difffferential equation of the plate and some of the boundary conditions on the hole boundary. The region of the plate outside FASNEL is filled with CST or quadrilateral elements. When a plate with a fastener is gradually loaded the fastener-plate interface exhibits a state of partial contact/separation above a certain load level. In misfit fastener, the extent of contact/separation changes with applied load, leading to a nonlinear moving boundary problem and this is handled by FASNEL using an inverse formulation. The analysis is developed at present for a filled hole in a finite elastic plate providing two axes of symmetry. Numerical studies are conducted on a smooth rigid fastener in a finite elastic plate subjected to uniaxial loading to demonstrate the capability of FASNEL.

A fatigue crack propagation model for concrete is proposed based on the concepts of fracture mechanics. This model takes into account the loading history, frequency of applied load, and size, effect parameters. Using this model, a method is described based on linear elastic fracture mechanics to assess the residual strength of cracked plain and reinforced concrete (RC) beams. This could be used to predict the residual strength (load carrying capacity) of cracked or damaged plain and reinforced concrete beams at a given level of damage. It has been seen that the fatigue crack propagation rate increases as. the size of plain concrete, beam increases indicating an increase in brittleness. In reinforced concrete (RC) beams, the fracture process becomes stable only when the beam is sufficiently reinforced.

Soils in and and semi-arid zones undergoes volume changes due to wetting. Depending upon the type of clay minerals present, degree of saturation, externally applied load and bonding, the fine grained soils either swells or compresses. One of the parameter that affects the volume change behaviour is the primary clay mineral present in their clay size fraction. A simple method of identifying the same has been presented. It has been brought out that in an expansive unsaturated undisturbed soil, the diffuse double layer repulsion, the stress state and the bonding play significant role in their volume change behaviour. In non-expansive fine grained unsaturated undisturbed soils, the shearing resistance at particle level (including the matrix suction and bonding) and fabric play a significant role in influencing the volume change behaviour. While both the mechanism co-exist, one of them play a dominant role depending upon the primary clay mineral is swelling or non swelling.

Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. In a reinforced soil bed system reinforcement layer is usually placed with or without end anchorage. Since soil is weak in tension reinforcement develop tension under the applied load or the displacement of the footing. This tensile force is distributed along the length of the reinforcement subjected to the end condition. The reinforccement tension helps in distributing the load over a wider area, and becomes more effective at large induced settlements. As a result, vertical componenent of tensile force generated becomes effective in reducing applied load. However, very few studies to quantify the tensile force along the reinforcement have been reported in the literature. In this paper an attempt has been made to obtain the true nature of tensile force distribution along the reinforcement. For a reinforced soil bed below a strip footing this paper brings out induced tensile force distribution along the reinforcement at different load levels and for different types of reinforcements.

Notched three point bend (TPB) specimens made with plain concrete and cement mortar were tested under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control at a rate of 0.0004 mm/s and simultaneously acoustic emissions (AE) released were recorded during the experiments. Amplitude distribution analysis of AE released during concrete was carried out to study the development of fracture process in concrete and mortar specimens. The slope of the log-linear frequency-amplitude distribution of AE is known as the AE based b-value. The AE based b-value was computed in terms of physical process of time varying applied load using cumulative frequency distribution (Gutenberg-Richter relationship) and discrete frequency distribution (Aki's method) of AE released during concrete fracture. AE characteristics of plain concrete and cement mortar were studied and discussed and it was observed that the AE based b-value analysis serves as a tool to identify the damage in concrete structural members. The mechanical and electrical characteristics of cellular network of the carbon nanotubes (CNT) impregnated with metallic and nonmetallic nanoparticles were examined simultaneously by employing the nanoindentation technique. Experimental results show that the nanoparticle dispersion not only enhances the mechanical strength of the cellular CNT by two orders of magnitude but also imparts variable nonlinear electrical characteristics; the latter depends on the contact resistance between nanoparticles and CNT, which is shown to depend on the applied load while indentation. Impregnation with silver nanoparticles enhances the electrical conductance, the dispersion with copper oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles reduces the conductance of CNT network. In all cases, a power law behavior with suppression in the differential conductivity at zero bias was noted, indicating electron tunneling through the channels formed at the CNT-nanoparticle interfaces. These results open avenues for designing cellular CNT foams with desired electro-mechanical properties and coupling. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The application of multilevel control strategies for load-frequency control of interconnected power systems is assuming importance. A large multiarea power system may be viewed as an interconnection of several lower-order subsystems, with possible change of interconnection pattern during operation. The solution of the control problem involves the design of a set of local optimal controllers for the individual areas, in a completely decentralised environment, plus a global controller to provide the corrective signal to account for interconnection effects. A global controller, based on the least-square-error principle suggested by Siljak and Sundareshan, has been applied for the LFC problem. A more recent work utilises certain possible beneficial aspects of interconnection to permit more desirable system performances. The paper reports the application of the latter strategy to LFC of a two-area power system. The power-system model studied includes the effects of excitation system and governor controls. A comparison of the two strategies is also made.

The plane problem of two dissimilar materials, bonded together and containing a crack along their common interface, which were subjected to a biaxial load at infinity, is examined by giving a closed-form expression for the first stress invariant of the normal stresses, which is equally valid everywhere, near to, and far from, the crack-tip region. This exact expression for the first-stress invariant is compared by constructing the respective isopachic-fringe patterns, to the approximate expression with non-singular terms, due to the biaxiality factor, for the same quantity. Significant differences between respective isopachic-patterns were found and their dependence on the elastic properties of both materials and the applied loads was demonstrated. The relative errors between the computedK I - andK II -components by using the approximate expression for the first stress-invariant and the accurate one, derived from closed-form solution along either isopachic-fringes or along circles and radii from the crack-tip have been given, indicating in some cases large discrepancies between exact and approximate solutions.

Fuzzy Waste Load Allocation Model (FWLAM), developed in an earlier study, derives the optimal fractional levels, for the base flow conditions, considering the goals of the Pollution Control Agency (PCA) and dischargers. The Modified Fuzzy Waste Load Allocation Model (MFWLAM) developed subsequently is a stochastic model and considers the moments (mean, variance and skewness) of water quality indicators, incorporating uncertainty due to randomness of input variables along with uncertainty due to imprecision. The risk of low water quality is reduced significantly by using this modified model, but inclusion of new constraints leads to a low value of acceptability level, A, interpreted as the maximized minimum satisfaction in the system. To improve this value, a new model, which is a combination Of FWLAM and MFWLAM, is presented, allowing for some violations in the constraints of MFWLAM. This combined model is a multiobjective optimization model having the objectives, maximization of acceptability level and minimization of violation of constraints. Fuzzy multiobjective programming, goal programming and fuzzy goal programming are used to find the solutions. For the optimization model, Probabilistic Global Search Lausanne (PGSL) is used as a nonlinear optimization tool. The methodology is applied to a case study of the Tunga-Bhadra river system in south India. The model results in a compromised solution of a higher value of acceptability level as compared to MFWLAM, with a satisfactory value of risk. Thus the goal of risk minimization is achieved with a comparatively better value of acceptability level.
