Responses of redox regulatory system to long-term survival (> 18 h) of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis in air are not yet understood. Lipid and protein oxidation level, oxidant (H2O2) generation, antioxidative status (levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and reductase, ascorbic acid and non-protein sulfhydryl) and activities of respiratory complexes (I, II, III and IV) in mitochondria were investigated in muscle of H. fossilis under air exposure condition (0, 3, 6, 12 and 18 h at 25 A degrees C). The increased levels of both H2O2 and tissue oxidation were observed due to the decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes in muscle under water deprivation condition. However, ascorbic acid and non-protein thiol groups were the highest at 18 h air exposure time. A linear increase in complex II activity with air exposure time and an increase up to 12 h followed by a decrease in activity of complex I at 18 h were observed. Negative correlation was observed for complex III and V activity with exposure time. Critical time to modulate the above parameters was found to be 3 h air exposure. Dehydration induced oxidative stress due to modulation of electron transport chain and redox metabolizing enzymes in muscle of H. fossilis was clearly observed. Possible contribution of redox regulatory system in muscle tissue of the fish for long-term survival in air is elucidated. Results of the present study may be useful to understand the redox metabolism in muscle of fishes those are exposed to air in general and air breathing fishes in particular.

Porous carbon oxygen-reducing electrodes incorporated with perovskite oxide catalysts are reported. It has been possible to fabricate high-performance oxygen-reducing electrodes by introducing La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 and La0.99Sr0.01NiO3 with the activated coconut-shell charcoal; these electrodes could sustain load currents as high as 1 A cm−2 without serious degradation. A model to explain oxygen-reducing activity of these oxides has been proposed.

Continuous slurry reactor runs of two to four weeks duration were carried out for catalyzed air oxidation of thiosalts under a variety of conditions using poly (4-vinylpyridine) - Cu (II) and quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) - Cu (II) catalysts. Results obtained indicate that these catalysts have high activity and relatively long-term catalyst stability for thiosalt waste streams of < 1000 ppm thiosalt level. Using 2% (w/w) slurries of the poly (4-vinylpyridine) Cu (II) catalyst, effective oxidation of 700 ppm S2O32− influent to an effluent of < 100 ppm total thio-salts can be carried out continuously for at least one month when operating at 20 to 30°C with solution flow rates of$˜1l/h and aeration of 1300 XXX/h using a two-stage reactor system comprised of 12 l reactors. At higher thiosalt influent levels (i.e. > 1600 ppm) increased reaction temperatures enable depletion to < 100 ppm thiosalt effluent levels for up to one week of continuous operation. The catalysts deactivate much more readily at these higher influent levels as a result of greater copper losses and appreciable adsorption of S2O32− and S4O62−. The behaviour of continuous slurry reactors employed in the experimental studies, by use of batch reaction data for the poly (4-vinylpyridine) Cu (II) catalyzed oxidation of thiosalts, can be modelled successfully. Quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) Cu (II) catalyst has good long-term stability and copper losses are very low. The poly (4-vinylpyridine) Cu (II) catalyst, however, is susceptible to appreciable oxidation of the polymer matrix on long-term usage. This oxidation of the polymer matrix results in a substantial loss in the activity of the regenerated catalyst.

The photocatalytic activity of combustion synthesized nanocrystalline CeAlO3 was determined for the degradation of four anionic and four cationic dyes. The perovskite oxide showed high-photocatalytic activity and a complete degradation of all the dyes was possible within 2 h. The photocatalytic activity of the compound was comparable with the activity of the commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 catalyst. The degradation of dyes was found to follow first order kinetics and the first order degradation rate constants were determined.

In situ electrochemical polymerization of aniline in a Langmuir trough under applied surface pressure assists in the preferential orientation of polyaniline (PANI) in planar polaronic structure. Exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) spread on water surface is used to bring anilinium cations present in the subphase to air-water interface through electrostatic interactions. Subsequent electrochemical polymerization of aniline under applied surface pressure in the Schaefer mode results in EGO/PANT composite with PANT in planar polaronic form. The orientation of PANI is confirmed by electrochemical and Raman spectroscopic studies. This technique opens up possibilities of 2-D polymerization at the air-water interface. Electrochemical sensing of hydrogen peroxide is used to differentiate the activity of planar and coiled forms of PANI toward electrocatalytic reactions.

Porous fungus-like ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized by simple thermal annealing of the hydrothermally synthesized sheet-like ZnS(en)(0.5) complex precursor in air at 600 degrees C. Structural and morphological changes occurring during ZnS(en)(0.5) -> ZnS -> ZnO transformations have been observed closely by annealing the as-synthesized precursor at 100-600 degrees C. Wurtzite ZnS nanosheets and ZnS-ZnO composites are obtained at temperatures of 400 degrees C and 500 degrees C, respectively. Thermal decomposition and oxidation of the ZnS(en) 0.5 nanosheets have been confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The visible light driven photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye has been demonstrated in the synthesized samples. ZnS-ZnO composite shows the highest dye degradation efficiency of 74% due to the formation of surface complex as well as higher visible light absorption as a result of band-gap narrowing effect. The porous ZnO nanostructures show efficient visible photoluminescence (PL) emission with a colour coordinate of (0.29, 0.35), which is close to that of white light (0.33, 0.33). The efficient visible PL emission as well as visible light driven photocatalytic activity of the materials synthesized in the present work might be very attractive for their applications in future optoelectronic devices, including in white light emitting devices.

Many fishes are exposed to air in their natural habitat or during their commercial handling. In natural habitat or during commercial handling, the cat fish Heteropneustes fossilis is exposed to air for > 24 h. Data on its oxidative metabolism in the above condition are not available. Oxidative stress (OS) indices (lipid and protein oxidation), toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS: H2O2) generation, antioxidative status (levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and reductase, ascorbic acid and nonprotein sulfhydryl) and activities of electron transport chain (ETC) enzymes (complex I-IV) were investigated in brain tissue of H. fossilis under air exposure condition (0, 3, 6, 12 and 18 h at 25 degrees C). Decreased activities of antioxidant (except catalase) and ETC enzymes (except complex II) with increased H2O2 and OS levels were observed in the tissue under water deprivation condition. Positive correlation was observed for complex II activity and non-protein thiol groups with time period of air exposure. The critical time period to induce OS and to reduce most of the studied antioxidant level in brain was found to be 3-6 h air exposure. The data can be useful to minimize the stress generated during commercial handling of the live fishes those exposed to air in general and H. fossilis in particular. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Three highly stable, hexacoordinated nonoxidovanadium(IV), V-IV(L)(2), complexes (1-3) have been isolated and structurally characterized with tridentate aroylhydrazonates containing ONO donor atoms. All the complexes are stable in the open air in the solid state as well as in solution, a phenomenon rarely observed in nonoxidovanadium(IV) complexes. The complexes have good solubility in organic solvents, permitting electrochemical and various spectroscopic investigations. The existence of nonoxidovanadium(IV) complexes was confirmed by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. X-ray crystallography showed the N3O3 donor set to define a trigonal prismatic geometry in each case. All the complexes show in vitro insulin mimetic activity against insulin responsive L6 myoblast cells, with complex 3 being the most potent, which is comparable to insulin at the complex concentration of 4 mu M, while the others have moderate insulin mimetic activity. In addition, the in vitro antiproliferative activity of complexes 1-3 against the He La cell line was assayed. The cytotoxicity of the complexes is affected by the various functional groups attached to the bezoylhydrazone derivative and 2 showed considerable antiproliferative activity compared to the most commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs.

Primary and secondary zinc-air batteries based on ceramic, stable, one dimensional titanium carbonitride (TiCN) nanostructures are reported. The optimized titanium carbonitride composition by density functional theory reveals their good activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Electrochemical measurements show their superior performance for the ORR in alkaline media coupled with favourable kinetics. The nanostructured TiCN lends itself amenable to be used as an air cathode material in primary and rechargeable zinc-air batteries. The battery performance and cyclability are found to be good. Further, we have demonstrated a gel-based electrolyte for rechargeable zinc-air batteries based on a TiCN cathode under ambient, atmospheric conditions without any oxygen supply from a cylinder. The present cell can work at current densities of 10-20 mA cm(2) (app. 10 000 mA g(-1) of TiCN) for several hours (63 h in the case of 10 mA cm(-2)) with a charge retention of 98%. The low cost, noble metal-free, mechanically stable and corrosion resistant TiCN is a very good alternative to Pt for metal-air battery chemistry.

We report the synthesis of ZnO nanowires in ambient air at 650 degrees C by a single-step vapor transport method using two different sources Zn (ZnO nanowires-I) and Zn:Cu (ZnO nanowires-II). The Zn:Cu mixed source co-vaporize Zn with a small amount of Cu at temperatures where elemental Cu source does not vaporize. This method provides us a facile route for Cu doping into ZnO. The aspect ratio of the grown ZnO nanowires-II was found to be higher by more than five times compared ZnO nanowires-I. Photocatalytic activity was measured by using a solar simulator and its ultraviolet-filtered light. The ZnO nanowires-II shows higher catalytic activity due to increased aspect ratio and higher content of surface defects because of incorporation of Cu impurities.

Five stereochemically constrained analogs of the chemotactic tripeptide incorporating 1-aminocycloalkane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac(n)c) and alpha,alpha-dialkylglycines (Deg, diethylglycine; Dpg, n,n-dipropylglycine and Dbg, n,n-dibutylglycine) at position 2 have been synthesized. NMR studies of peptides For-Met-Xxx-Phe-OMe (Xxx = Ac(7)c, I; Ac(8)c, II; Deg, III; Dpg, IV and Dbg, V; For, formyl) establish that peptides with cycloalkyl residues, I and II, adopt folded beta-turn conformations in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)SO. In contrast, analogs with linear alkyl sidechains, III-V, favour fully extended (C-5) conformations in solution. Peptides I-V exhibit high activity in inducing beta-glucosaminidase release from rabbit neutrophils, with ED(50) values ranging from 1.4-8.0 x 10(-11)M. In human neutrophils the Dxg peptides III-V have ED(50) values ranging from 2.3 x 10(-8) to 5.9 x 10(-10) M, with the activity order being V > IV > III. While peptides I-IV are less active than the parent. For-Met-Leu-Phe-OH, in stimulating histamine release from human basophils, the Dbg peptide V is appreciably more potent, suggesting its potential utility as a probe for formyl peptide receptors.

A general mathematical model for forced air precooling of spherical food products in bulk is developed. The food products are arranged inline to form a rectangular parallelepiped. Chilled air is blown along the height of the package. The governing equations for the transient two-dimensional conduction with internal heat generation in the product, simultaneous heat and mass transfer at the product-air interface and one-dimensional transient energy and species conservation equations for the moist air are solved numerically using finite difference methods. Results are presented in the form of time-temperature histories. Experiments are conducted with model foods in a laboratory scale air precooling tunnel. The agreement between the theoretical and experimental results is found to be good. In general, a single product analysis fails to predict the precooling characteristics of bulk loads of food products. In the range of values investigated, the respiration heat is found to have a negligible effect.

A copper(II) complex of dipyridophenazine, viz., [Cu(dppz)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (I), has been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of the complex shows a five-coordinate structure in which two N,N-donor dipyridophenazine (dppz) and one aqua ligand bind to the copper(II) center giving Cu-O and Cu-N bond distances in the range of 1.981(6) to 2.043(6) angstrom. The ESI-MS spectrum of 1 in MeCN shows a peak at m/z value of 313 (100%) indicating the dissociation of the aqua ligand in the solution phase. The complex is one-electron paramagnetic (mu(eff), 1.86 mu(B)). It displays a quasi-reversible Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox process at 0.096 V. The complex is an avid binder to CT DNA giving a binding constant value of 3.5 x 10(5) M-1. It shows significant hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in dark ill the absence of any external agents. The complex exhibits chemical nuclease activity oil treatment with 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a reducing agent forming hydroxyl radicals. Complex 1 is a model synthetic nuclease and hydrolase showing both modes of DNA cleavage under different reaction conditions. The DNA cleavage activity of 1 is significantly better than its phen analogue but similar to that of the bis-dpq complex.
Identification of amino groups in the carbohydrate binding activity of winged bean acidic agglutinin

Chemical modification studies reveal that the modification of amino groups in WBA II leads to a complete loss in the hemagglutinating and saccharide binding activities. Since WBA II is a dimeric molecule and contains two binding sites, one amino group in each of the binding sites is inferred to be essential for its activity. The presence of amino group which has a potential to form hydrogen bonded interactions with the ligand, substantiates our observation regarding the forces involved in WBA II-receptor and WBA II-simple sugar interactions.
