An inexpensive and simple circuit to aid the direct measurement of majority carrier capture cross sections of impurity levels in the band gap of a semiconductor by the variable width filling pulse technique is presented. With proper synchronisation, during the period of application of the pulse, the device is disconnected from the capacitance meter to avoid distortion of the pulse and is reconnected again to the meter to record the emission transient. Modes of operation include manual triggering for long emission transients, repetitive triggering for isothermal and DLTS measurements and the DLTS mode which is to be used with signal analysers that already provide a synchronising pulse for disconnection.

A new method of sensing the abnormal output voltage conditions of a single phase UPS system is presented, which provides the information almost instantaneously, so that a fast load transfer can be initiated. A continuous monitoring of the UPS output instantaneous voltage is used so that any under/over voltage, transients, or waveform distortion present can be detected.

The three isomeric cresols were subjected to the all-valence-electron CNDO/2 andPPP-CI calculations. Results from this study were used: (i) to compare the electronic structures of these isomers vis-Ã-vis parent compounds-phenol and toluene, (ii) to obtain a quantitative picture of their chemical reactivities and electronic absorption spectra. Using the sgr-core charges derived from CNDO/2 calculations and subsequently revising the valence-state ionisation potential and one-center-two-electron repulsion integrals, thePPP-CI calculations were performed on the title compounds according toNishimoto andForster scheme. In these calculations the pseudo-unsaturated nature of the methyl group has been given due consideration. In spectral assignment, compared to the conventionalPPP approach, the CNDO/2-basedPPP-CI method gave a better agreement with the experimental data.

The crystal structure of cyclo-(L-histidyl-L-aspartyl) trihydrate has been determined by x-ray diffraction techniques, and refined to a final R index of 0.056 for 1601 reflections. The molecule is in a folded conformation, with the imidazole ring facing the diketopiperazine ring. However, since the diketopiperazine ring is essentially planar, the interaction between the two rings is not as intimate as in those cyclic dipeptides in which the diketopiperazine ring is in a boat conformation with the side chain occupying an axial, or flagpole, site. Planarity of the diketopiperazine ring may be dictated by steric interactions between the imidazole ring and the aspartyl side chain. The molecule is a zwitterion, a proton having been transferred from the carboxyl group of the aspartyl side chain to the imidazole ring.

We describe the synthesis and structure of Barium sulfate nanoparticles by precipitation method in the presence of water soluble inorganic stabilizing agent, sodium hexametaphosphate, (NaPO3)(6). The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement method using powder X-ray diffraction data. Barium sulfate nanoparticles were crystallized in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm (No. 62) having the lattice parameters a = 7.215(1) (angstrom), b = 8.949(1) (angstrom) and c = 5.501 (1) (angstrom) respectively. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the nanoparticles are size range, 30-50 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed distinct absorption due to the SO42- moiety at 1115 and 1084 cm(-1) indicating formation of barium sulfate nanoparticles free from the phosphate group from the stabilizer used in the synthesis. The incorporation of dUMP during replication or the deamination of cytosine in DNA results in the occurrence of uracils in genomes. To maintain genomic integrity, uracil DNA glycosylases (UDGs) excise uracil from DNA and initiate the base-excision repair pathway. Here, we cloned, purified and biochemically characterized a family 5 UDG, UdgB, from Mycobacterium smegmatis to allow us to use it as a model organism to investigate the physiological significance of the novel enzyme. Studies with knockout strains showed that compared with the wild-type parent, the mutation rate of the udgB(-) strain was approximately twofold higher, whereas the mutation rate of a strain deficient in the family 1 UDG (ung(-)) was found to be similar to 8.4-fold higher. Interestingly, the mutation rate of the double-knockout (ung(-)ludgB(-)) strain was remarkably high, at similar to 19.6-fold. While CG to TA mutations predominated in the ung(-) and ung(-)/udgb(-) strains, AT to GC mutations were enhanced in the udgB(-) strain. The ung(-)/udgB(-) strain was notably more sensitive to acidified nitrite and hydrogen peroxide stresses compared with the single knockouts (ung(-) or udgB(-)). These observations reveal a synergistic effect of UdgB and Ung in DNA repair, and could have implications for the generation of attenuated strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

To study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the incommensurate lattice modulation at 153 K in K3Cu8S6, electrical resistivity measurements are done at 1.0 GPa, 1.5 GPa and 2.2 GPa. The sharp increase in resistance at 2.2 GPa is attributed to the incommensurate to commensurate transition. This is further confirmed by the non-linear I–V characteristics at 2.2 GPa showing the driven motion of the commensurate charge density wave in the presence of an external electric field.

We report here the results of structural and vibrational studies on the solid solution Fe1 ? xNixPS3 (1 greater-or-equal, slanted x greater-or-equal, slanted 0) systems. From the structural analysis, we show that there is a lattice compaction as the composition x is varied from 0 to 1, the basic lattice symmetry being maintained. We find that the compaction is more in the basal plane. These subtle structural changes are also reflected in the vibrational bands. We observed splitting of certain bands due to these small changes in the lattice constants, which we explained as arising from a correlation splitting. These changes in the vibrational bands have also been seen on cooling where there is a preferential thermal compaction in the basal plane compared to that perpendicular to the plane.

Oligomeric copper(I) clusters are formed by the insertion reaction of copper(I) aryloxides into heterocumulenes. The effect of varying the steric demands of the heterocumulene and the aryloxy group on the nuclearity of the oligomers formed has been probed. Reactions with copper(I)2-methoxyphenoxide and copper(I)2-methylphenoxide with PhNCS result in the formation of hexameric complexes hexakis[N-phenylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato copper(I)] 3 and 4 respectively. Single crystal X-ray data confirmed the structure of 3. Similar insertion reactions of CS2 with the copper(I) aryloxides formed by 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and 2,6-dimethylphenol result in oligomeric copper(I) complexes 7 and 8 having the (aryloxy)thioxanthate ligand. Complex 7 was confirmed to be a tetramer from single crystal X-ray crystallography. Reactions carried out with 2-mercaptopyrimidine, which has ligating properties similar to N-alkylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolate, result in the formation of an insoluble polymeric complex 11. The fluorescence spectra of oligomeric complexes are helpful in determining their nuclearity. Ir has been shown that a decrease in the steric requirements of either the heterocumulene or aryloxy parts of the ligand can compensate for steric constraints acid facilitate oligomerization. A joint analysis-synthesis framework is developed for the compressive sensing (CS) recovery of speech signals. The signal is assumed to be sparse in the residual domain with the linear prediction filter used as the sparse transformation. Importantly this transform is not known apriori, since estimating the predictor filter requires the knowledge of the signal. Two prediction filters, one comb filter for pitch and another all pole formant filter are needed to induce maximum sparsity. An iterative method is proposed for the estimation of both the prediction filters and the signal itself. Formant prediction filter is used as the synthesis transform, while the pitch filter is used to model the periodicity in the residual excitation signal, in the analysis mode. Significant improvement in the LLR measure is seen over the previously reported formant filter estimation.

Elastic Net Regularizers have shown much promise in designing sparse classifiers for linear classification. In this work, we propose an alternating optimization approach to solve the dual problems of elastic net regularized linear classification Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and logistic regression (LR). One of the sub-problems turns out to be a simple projection. The other sub-problem can be solved using dual coordinate descent methods developed for non-sparse L2-regularized linear SVMs and LR, without altering their iteration complexity and convergence properties. Experiments on very large datasets indicate that the proposed dual coordinate descent - projection (DCD-P) methods are fast and achieve comparable generalization performance after the first pass through the data, with extremely sparse models.

A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of molybdenum in industrial materials has been developed using the leaf extract of Syzygium jambolanum DC based on the reaction of Mo (VI) at pH 7.0 to produce an orange-yellow complex with an absorption maximum at 426 nm. The molar absorptivity of the complex is 4.27 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1) and the absorbance, is linear in the range 0.05-0.8 ppm. Sandell sensitivity coefficient was found to be 2.25 x 10(-3) mu g/cm(2). The method is ten times more sensitive than the aqueous thiocyanate system. It has been applied successfully in micronutrient fertilizer, artificial freshwater and sea-water analyses.

Cell lines derived from tumor tissues have been used as a valuable system to study gene regulation and cancer development. Comprehensive characterization of the genetic background of cell lines could provide clues on novel genes responsible for carcinogenesis and help in choosing cell lines for particular studies. Here, we have carried out whole exome and RNA sequencing of commonly used glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines (U87, T98G, LN229, U343, U373 and LN18) to unearth single nucleotide variations (SNVs), indels, differential gene expression, gene fusions and RNA editing events. We obtained an average of 41,071 SNVs out of which 1,594 (3.88%) were potentially cancer-specific. The cell lines showed frequent SNVs and indels in some of the genes that are known to be altered in GBM-EGFR, TP53, PTEN, SPTA1 and NF1. Chromatin modifying genes-ATRX, MLL3, MLL4, SETD2 and SRCAP also showed alterations. While no cell line carried IDH1 mutations, five cell lines showed hTERT promoter activating mutations with a concomitant increase in hTERT transcript levels. Five significant gene fusions were found of which NUP93-CYB5B was validated. An average of 18,949 RNA editing events was also obtained. Thus we have generated a comprehensive catalogue of genetic alterations for six GBM cell lines.
