A new form of a multi-step transversal linearization (MTL) method is developed and numerically explored in this study for a numeric-analytical integration of non-linear dynamical systems under deterministic excitations. As with other transversal linearization methods, the present version also requires that the linearized solution manifold transversally intersects the non-linear solution manifold at a chosen set of points or cross-section in the state space. However, a major point of departure of the present method is that it has the flexibility of treating non-linear damping and stiffness terms of the original system as damping and stiffness terms in the transversally linearized system, even though these linearized terms become explicit functions of time. From this perspective, the present development is closely related to the popular practice of tangent-space linearization adopted in finite element (FE) based solutions of non-linear problems in structural dynamics. The only difference is that the MTL method would require construction of transversal system matrices in lieu of the tangent system matrices needed within an FE framework. The resulting time-varying linearized system matrix is then treated as a Lie element using Magnus’ characterization [W. Magnus, On the exponential solution of differential equations for a linear operator, Commun. Pure Appl. Math., VII (1954) 649–673] and the associated fundamental solution matrix (FSM) is obtained through repeated Lie-bracket operations (or nested commutators). An advantage of this approach is that the underlying exponential transformation could preserve certain intrinsic structural properties of the solution of the non-linear problem. Yet another advantage of the transversal linearization lies in the non-unique representation of the linearized vector field – an aspect that has been specifically exploited in this study to enhance the spectral stability of the proposed family of methods and thus contain the temporal propagation of local errors. A simple analysis of the formal orders of accuracy is provided within a finite dimensional framework. Only a limited numerical exploration of the method is presently provided for a couple of popularly known non-linear oscillators, viz. a hardening Duffing oscillator, which has a non-linear stiffness term, and the van der Pol oscillator, which is self-excited and has a non-linear damping term.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)] (1-3), where H2L is a Schiff base ligand 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenol and B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen for 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq for 2) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz for 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography shows the presence of an oxovanadium(IV) moiety in a six coordinate VO3N3 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band within 800-850 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative response near 0.7 V versus SCE for V(V)-V(IV) and a reductive response within -1.1 to -1.3 V due to V(IV)-V(III) couple in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values of 4.2 x 10(4) to 1.2 x 10(5) M (1). The complexes do not show any ``chemical nuclease'' activity in dark. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm via O-1(2) pathway and in near-IR light (752.5 to 799.3 nm IR optics) by HO* pathway. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells giving IC50 value of 13 mu M, while it is less toxic in dark (IC50 = 97 mu M). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In the 1-methylthio-2- nitrovinyl moiety the C--C bond, 1.368 (7)A, is significantly longer than in ethylene, 1.336 (2)/~. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of this compound is only 0.25 of the urea standard. The correlation between the molecular packing and SHG is discussed.

A short access to homocalystegine analogues silylated at C7 is described. The synthesis involves the desymmetrization of a (phenyldimethylsilyl)methylcycloheptatriene using osmium-mediated dihydroxylation, followed by the diol protection and a cycloaddition involving the remaining diene moiety and an acylnitroso reagent. Additions of the osmium and acylnitroso reagents were shown, through X-ray diffraction studies of the resulting major isomers, to occur anti and syn, respectively, relative to the SiCH2 substituent. N-O bond cleavage on the resulting cycloadduct then produces the aminopolyol having a silylmethyl substituent. Oxidation of the C-Si bond also afforded an access to unusual amino-heptitols having five contiguous stereogenic centers. In the course of this work, we finally observed a unusual rearrangement taking place on cycloheptanone 18 substituted by two acetyl groups and a neighboring Boc-protected amine. A profound reorganization of the substituents on the seven-membered ring effectively took place under acidic conditions (TFA) leading to the thermodynamically more stable homocalystegine-type compound., DFT calculations of the conformational energy of isomeric silyl homocalystegines indicated that the product observed upon the acid-mediated rearrangement was the most stable of a series of analogues with various distributions of substituents along the seven-membered ring backbone. A tentative mechanism is proposed to rationalize the acetate migrations and inversions of the stereochemistry at various stereocenters.

Several H-2 defined cell lines were examined for their ability to support infection and replication of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) before their use in in vitro and in vivo stimulation protocols for generating cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) against JEV. Among II different cell lines tested, two H-2(d) macrophage tumour lines (P388D1, RAW 264.7), an H-2(d) hybridoma (Sp2/0), an H-2K(k)D(d) neuroblastoma (Neuro 2a), and H-2(k) fibroblast cell line (L929) were found to support JEV infection and replication. These cell lines were used to generate anti-JEV CTLs by using in vivo immunization followed by in vitro stimulation of BALB/c mice. We observed that not only syngeneic and allogeneic infected cells but also JEV-infected xenogeneic cells could prime BALB/c mice for the generation of JEV-specific CTLs upon subsequent in vitro stimulation of splenocytes with JEV-infected syngeneic cells. Although infected xenogeneic cells were used for immunization, the anti-JEV effecters that were generated lysed infected syngeneic targets but not JEV-infected xenogeneic or allogeneic target cells in a 5h Cr-51 release assay. These anti-JEV effecters recognized syngeneic target cells infected with West Nile virus to a lesser extent and were shown to be Lyt-2.2(+) T cells. The results of unlabelled cold target competition studies suggested alterations in the cell surface expression of viral antigenic determinants recognized by these CTLs. We further demonstrate that the JEV-specific CTLs generated could virtually block the release of infectious virus particles from infected P388D1 and Neuro 2a cells in vitro.

Diamond like carbon films deposited by RF magnetron sputter deposition technique contain both SP2 and SP3 hybridized carbons. These films are structurally disordered and inhomogeneous. By the application of electric field across the film, these films are transformed to a more orderly structured diamond like carbon, bringing homogenity in the film. This transformation has resulted in the increase of the reflectivity of the metal(Aluminum), which is used as one of the electrodes for applying the electric field, by 5 times.

Addition of a small amount of coumarin during crystallization produces new polymorphic modifications in 4-styrylcoumarin and 4-(3-fluorostyryl)coumarin, which are photolabile. Interestingly, upon irradiation polymorphic modification of 4-(3-fluorostyryl)coumarin produces a mirror-symmetric photodimer in contrast to the centrosymmetric photodimer obtained without addition of coumarin during crystallization.

In this article, a single-phase, one-domain macroscopic model is developed for studying binary alloy solidification with moving equiaxed solid phase, along with the associated transport phenomena. In this model, issues such as thermosolutal convection, motion of solid phase relative to liquid and viscosity variations of the solid-liquid mixture with solid fraction in the mobile zone are taken into account. Using the model, the associated transport phenomena during solidification of Al-Cu alloys in a rectangular cavity are predicted. The results for temperature variation, segregation patterns, and eutectic fraction distribution are compared with data from in-house experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental results. To highlight the influence of solid phase movement on convection and final macrosegregation, the results of the current model are also compared with those obtained from the conventional solidification model with stationary solid phase. By including the independent movement of the solid phase into the fluid transport model, better predictions of macrosegregation, microstructure, and even shrinkage locations were obtained. Mechanical property prediction models based on microstructure will benefit from the improved accuracy of this model.

A new hybrid comparison technique for transmission line protection, providing polar characteristics marked by sharp discontinuities, has been developed. The comparator models, described in block schematic form, accompany a steady state theoretical basis for comparison. Dynamic test results are indicated for a directional quadrilateral characteristic which closely corresponds to the probable fault area of a transmission line.

This article aims to obtain damage-tolerant designs with minimum weight for a laminated composite structure using genetic algorithm. Damage tolerance due to impacts in a laminated composite structure is enhanced by dispersing the plies such that too many adjacent plies do not have the same angle. Weight of the structure is minimized and the Tsai-Wu failure criterion is considered for the safe design. Design variables considered are the number of plies and ply orientation. The influence of dispersed ply angles on the weight of the structure for a given loading conditions is studied by varying the angles in the range of 0 degrees-45 degrees, 0 degrees-60 degrees and 0 degrees-90 degrees at intervals of 5 degrees and by using specific ply angles tailored to loading conditions. A comparison study is carried out between the conventional stacking sequence and the stacking sequence with dispersed ply angles for damage-tolerant weight minimization and some useful designs are obtained. Unconventional stacking sequence is more damage tolerant than the conventional stacking sequence is demonstrated by performing a finite element analysis under both tensile as well as compressive loading conditions. Moreover, a new mathematical function called the dispersion function is proposed to measure the dispersion of ply angles in a laminate. The approach for dispersing ply angles to achieve damage tolerance is especially suited for composite material design space which has multiple local minima.

Organic-inorganic hybrid membranes are prepared from Nafion and acid functionalized aluminosilicate with varying structures and surface areas. Acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with cellular foam framework (Al-MSU-F type) of surface area 463 m(2) g(-1), acid-functionalized aluminosilicate molecular sieves (Al-HMS type) of surface area 651 m(2) g(-1) and acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with hexagonal network (Al-MCM-41 type) of surface area 799 m(2) g(-1) have been employed as potential filler materials to form hybrid membranes with Nafion. The structural behavior, water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the hybrid membranes are extensively investigated. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) with Al-HMS-Nafion and Al-MCM-41-Nafion hybrid membranes deliver respective peak power-densities of 170 mW cm(-2) and 246 mW cm(-2), while a peak power-density of only 48 mW cm(-2) is obtained for the DMFC employing pristine recast-Nafion membrane under identical operating conditions. The unique properties associated with hybrid membranes could be exclusively attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic-acid groups in the filler materials, which provide proton-conducting pathways between the filler and matrix in the hybrid membranes, and facilitate proton transport with adequate balance between proton conductivity and methanol permeability. We review the spatio-temporal dynamical features of the Ananthakrishna model for the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, a kind of plastic instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. We then establish a qualitative correspondence between the spatio-temporal structures that evolve continuously in the instability domain and the nature of the irregularity of the scalar stress signal. Rest of the study is on quantifying the dynamical information contained in the stress signals about the spatio-temporal dynamics of the model. We show that at low applied strain rates, there is a one-to-one correspondence with the randomly nucleated isolated bursts of mobile dislocation density and the stress drops. We then show that the model equations are spatio-temporally chaotic by demonstrating the number of positive Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension scale with the system size at low and high strain rates. Using a modified algorithm for calculating correlation dimension density, we show that the stress-strain signals at low applied strain rates corresponding to spatially uncorrelated dislocation bands exhibit features of low dimensional chaos. This is made quantitative by demonstrating that the model equations can be approximately reduced to space independent model equations for the average dislocation densities, which is known to be low-dimensionally chaotic. However, the scaling regime for the correlation dimension shrinks with increasing applied strain rate due to increasing propensity for propagation of the dislocation bands. The stress signals in the partially propagating to fully propagating bands turn to have features of extensive chaos.

Topological methods have been successfully used to identify features in scalar fields and to measure their importance. In this paper, we define a notion of topological saliency that captures the relative importance of a topological feature with respect to other features in its local neighborhood. Features are identified by extreme points of an input scalar field, and their importance measured by the so-called topological persistence. Computing the topological saliency of all features for varying neighborhood sizes results in a saliency plot that serves as a summary of relative importance of all topological features. We develop a convenient tool for users to interactively select and inspect features using the saliency plot. We demonstrate the use of topological saliency together with the rich information encoded in the saliency plot in several applications, including key feature identification, scalar field simplification, and feature clustering.
