The out-diffusion of germanium from the core of a photosensitive fiber under elevated temperature is exploited to form a Fabry-Perot filter within a single fiber Bragg grating, by subjecting the diffused region to a single exposure using the standard phase-mask technique. A key aspect of our work is the measurement of the out-diffusion through energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of the above single-grating filter for discrimination and simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. The proposed technique provides a significant advantage over other existing methods that require at least two gratings.

Although the peptide Boc-Aibl-Ala2-Leu3- Aib4-Alas Leu'-Aib7-Ala8-Leu9-Aib'0-OMe [with a t-butoxycarbonyl(Boc) blocking group at the amino terminus, a methyl ester (OMe) at the carboxyl terminus, and four a-aminoisobutyric (Aib) residues] has a 3-fold repeat of residues, the helix formed by the peptide backbone is irregular. The carboxyl-terminal half assumes an at-helical form with torsion angles ) and r of approximately -60° and -45°, respectively, whereas the amino-terminal half is distorted by an insertion of a water molecule between the amide nitrogen of Ala5 [N(5)] and the carbonyl oxygen of Ala2 [0(2)]. The water molecule W(1) acts as a bridge by forming hydrogen bonds N(5).W(1) (2.93 A) and W(1)---0(2) (2.86 A). The distortion of the helix exposes the carbonyl oxygens of Aib' and Aib4 to the outside environment, with the consequence that the helix assumes an amphiphilic character despite having all apolar residues. Neighboring helices in the crystal run in antiparallel directions. On one side of a helix there are only hydrophobic contacts with efficient interdigitation of leucine side chains with those from the neighboring helix. On the other side of the helix there are hydrogen bonds between protruding carbonyl oxygens and four water molecules that separate two neighboring helices. Along the helix axis the helices bind head-to-tail with a direct hydrogen bond N(2)-0(9) (3.00 A). Crystals grown from methanol/water solution are in space group P2, with a = 15.778 ± 0.004 A, b = 11.228 ± 0.002 A, c = 18.415 ± 0.003 A, = 102.10 ± 0.02ur and two formula units per cell for C49HON1003 2H2OCH3OH. The overall agreement factorR is 7.5% for 3394 reflections observed with intensities >3a(F), and the resolution is 0.90 A.

One of the long standing problems in quantum chemistry had been the inability to exploit full spatial and spin symmetry of an electronic Hamiltonian belonging to a non-Abelian point group. Here, we present a general technique which can utilize all the symmetries of an electronic (magnetic) Hamiltonian to obtain its full eigenvalue spectrum. This is a hybrid method based on Valence Bond basis and the basis of constant z-component of the total spin. This technique is applicable to systems with any point group symmetry and is easy to implement on a computer. We illustrate the power of the method by applying it to a model icosahedral half-filled electronic system. This model spans a huge Hilbert space (dimension 1,778,966) and in the largest non-Abelian point group. The C60 molecule has this symmetry and hence our calculation throw light on the higher energy excited states of the bucky ball. This method can also be utilized to study finite temperature properties of strongly correlated systems within an exact diagonalization approach. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Channel-aware assignment of subchannels to users in the downlink of an OFDMA system requires extensive feedback of channel state information (CSI) to the base station. Since bandwidth is scarce, schemes that limit feedback are necessary. We develop a novel, low feedback, distributed splitting-based algorithm called SplitSelect to opportunistically assign each subchannel to its most suitable user. SplitSelect explicitly handles multiple access control aspects associated with CSI feedback, and scales well with the number of users. In it, according to a scheduling criterion, each user locally maintains a scheduling metric for each subchannel. The goal is to select, for each subchannel, the user with the highest scheduling metric. At any time, each user contends for the subchannel for which it has the largest scheduling metric among the unallocated subchannels. A tractable asymptotic analysis of a system with many users is central to SplitSelect's simple design. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the speed with which subchannels and users are paired. The net data throughput, when the time overhead of selection is accounted for, is shown to be substantially better than several schemes proposed in the literature. We also show how fairness and user prioritization can be ensured by suitably defining the scheduling metric.

A mild, environmentally friendly method for reduction of aromatic nitro group to amine is reported, using zinc powder in aqueous solutions of chelating ethers. The donor ether acts as a ligand and also serves as a co-solvent. Water is the proton source. This procedure is also a new method for the activation of zinc for electron transfer reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. The reduction is accomplished in a neutral medium and other reducing groups remained unaffected. The ethers used are dioxolane, 1,4-dioxane, ethoxymethoxyethane, dimethoxymethane, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and diglyme.

In recent years, the time dependant maintenance of expensive high voltage power equipments is getting replaced by condition based maintenance so as to detect apriori an impending failure of the equipment. For condition based maintenance, most monitoring systems concentrate on the electrical quantities such as measurement and evaluation of partial discharges, tan delta, tip-up test, dielectric strength, insulation resistance, polarization and depolarization current. However, in the case of equipments being developed with novel nanodielectric insulating materials, the variation in these parameters before an impending failure is not available. Hence in this work, accelerated electrothermal aging studies have been conducted on unfilled epoxy as well as epoxy nanocomposite samples of 5 wt% filler loading, and the tan d values were continuously monitored to obtain the condition of the samples under study. It was observed that those samples whose tan d increased at a rapid rate failed first.

We investigate nucleosynthesis inside the outflows from gamma-ray burst (GRB) accretion disks formed by the Type II collapsars. In these collapsars, massive stars undergo core collapse to form a proto-neutron star initially, and a mild supernova (SN) explosion is driven. The SN ejecta lack momentum, and subsequently this newly formed neutron star gets transformed to a stellar mass black hole via massive fallback. The hydrodynamics and the nucleosynthesis in these accretion disks have been studied extensively in the past. Several heavy elements are synthesized in the disk, and much of these heavy elements are ejected from the disk via winds and outflows. We study nucleosynthesis in the outflows launched from these disks by using an adiabatic, spherically expanding outflow model, to understand which of these elements thus synthesized in the disk survive in the outflow. While studying this, we find that many new elements like isotopes of titanium, copper, zinc, etc., are present in the outflows. Ni-56 is abundantly synthesized in most of the cases in the outflow, which implies that the outflows from these disks in a majority of cases will lead to an observable SN explosion. It is mainly present when outflow is considered from the He-rich, Ni-56/Fe-54-rich zones of the disks. However, outflow from the Si-rich zone of the disk remains rich in silicon. Although emission lines of many of these heavy elements have been observed in the X-ray afterglows of several GRBs by Chandra, BeppoSAX, XMM-Newton, etc., Swift seems to have not yet detected these lines.

We consider sound source mechanisms involving the acoustic and instability modes of dual-stream isothermal supersonic jets with the inner nozzle buried within an outer shroud-like nozzle. A particular focus is scattering into radiating sound waves at the shroud lip. For such jets, several families of acoustically coupled instability waves exist, beyond the regular vortical Kelvin-Helmholtz mode, with different shapes and propagation characteristics, which can therefore affect the character of the radiated sound. In our model, the coaxial shear layers are vortex sheets while the incident acoustic disturbances are the propagating shroud modes. The Wiener-Hopf method is used to compute their scattering at the sharp shroud edge to obtain the far-field radiation. The resulting far-field directivity quantifies the acoustic efficiency of different mechanisms, which is particularly important in the upstream direction, where the results show that the scattered sound is more intense than that radiated directly by the shear-layer modes.

We investigate the transient dynamics of disturbances inside a thermocline based molten salt thermal energy storage (TES). Numerical simulations were conducted with four inlet flow configurations. The disturbances introduced at the inlet grow via Rayleigh Taylor instability. The formed vortical motions inside the tank propagate downstream and destroy the thermocline. The vortex-thermocline interaction upsets the stratification inside the TES. The disturbance growth rate, penetration length and vortex Reynolds number are measured. The growth of penetration length prior to the vortex-thermocline interaction is quadratic. The vortex Reynolds number of the eddy which causes thermocline breakdown increases with increase in Atwood number. The impingement of vortex on thermocline is studied. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
