SrTiO3:Pr3+,Al3+ phosphor samples with varying ratios of Sr/Ti/Al were prepared by the gel-carbonate method and the mechanism of enhancement of the red photoluminescence intensity therein was investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SrTiO3:Pr3+ show both D-1(2) --> H-3(4) and P-3(0) --> H-3(4) emission in the red and blue spectral regions, respectively, with comparable intensity. The emission intensity of D-1(2) --> H-3(4) is drastically enhanced by the incorporation of Al3+ and excess Ti4+ in the compositional range Sr(Ti,Al-y)(O3+3y/2):Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.4) and SrTi1+xAlyO3+z:Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5; 0.05 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.1; z = 2x + 3y/2) with the complete disappearance of the blue band. This cannot be explained by the simple point defect model as the EPR studies do not show any evidence for the presence of electron or hole centers. TEM investigations show the presence of exsolved nanophases of SrAl12O19 and/or TiO2 in the grain boundary region as well as grain interiors as lamellae which, in turn, form the solid-state defects, namely, dislocation networks, stacking faults and crystallographic shear planes whereby the framework of corner shared TiO6 octehedra changes over to edge-sharing TiO5-AlO5 strands as indicated from the Al-27 MAS NMR studies. The presence of transitional nanophases and the associated defects modify the excitation-emission processes by way of formation of electronic sub-levels at 3.40 and 4.43 eV, leading to magnetic-dipole related red emission with enhanced intensity. This is evidenced by the fact that SrAl12O19:Pr3+,Ti4+ shows bright red emission whereas SrAl12O19:Pr3+ does not show red photoluminescence.

The electrical switching behavior of amorphous GexSe35-xTe65 thin film samples has been studied in sandwich geometry of electrodes. It is found that these samples exhibit memory switching behavior, which is similar to that of bulk Ge-Se-Te glasses. As expected, the switching voltages of GexSe35-xTe65 thin film samples are lower compared to those of bulk samples. In both thin film amorphous and bulk glassy samples, the switching voltages are found to increase with the increase in Ge concentration, which is consistent with the increase in network connectivity with the addition of higher coordinated Ge atoms. A sharp increase is seen in the composition dependence of the switching fields of amorphous GexSe35-xTe65 films above x = 21, which can be associated with the stiffness transition. Further, the optical band gap of a-GexSe35-x Te-65 thin film samples, calculated from the absorption spectra, is found to show an increasing trend with the increase in Ge concentration, which is consistent with the variation of switching fields with composition. The increase in structural cross-linking with progressive addition of 4-fold coordinated Ge atoms is one of the main reasons for the observed increase in switching fields as well as band gaps of GexSe35-xTe65 samples. Understanding the transients of buckling in drying colloidal suspensions is pivotal for producing new functional microstructures with tunable morphologies. Here, we report first observations and elucidate the buckling instability induced morphological transition (sphere to ring structure) in an acoustically levitated, heated nanosuspension droplet using dynamic energy balance. Droplet deformation featuring the formation of symmetric cavities is initiated by capillary pressure that is two to three orders of magnitude greater than the acoustic radiation pressure, thus indicating that the standing pressure field has no influence on the buckling front kinetics. With an increase in heat flux, the growth rate of surface cavities and their post-buckled volume increase while the buckling time period reduces, thereby altering the buckling pathway and resulting in distinct precipitate structures. However, irrespective of the heating rate, the volumetric droplet deformation exhibits a linear time dependence and the droplet vaporization is observed to deviate from the classical D-2-law.

Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering technique on p-type silicon(100) substrates held at temperatures in the range 303-673 K. The influence of substrate temperature on the core level binding energies, chemical bonding configuration, crystallographic structure and dielectric properties was investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies and Fourier transform infrared transmittance data confirmed the formation of stoichiometric films with anatase phase at a substrate temperature of 673 K. The films formed at 303 K were nanocrystalline with amorphous matrix while those deposited at 673 K were transformed in to crystalline phase and growth of grains in pyramidal like structure as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy respectively. Metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors were fabricated with the configuration of Al/TiO2/Si structures. The current voltage, capacitance voltage and conductance voltage characteristics were studied to understand the electrical conduction and dielectric properties of the MOS devices. The leakage current density (at gate voltage of 2 V) decreased from 2.2 x 10(-6) to 1.7 x 10(-7) A/cm(2), the interface trap density decreased from 1.2 x 10(13) to 2.1 x 10(12) cm(-2) eV(-1) and the dielectric constant increased from 14 to 36 with increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K.
