India has a long and rich history of tropical science. But here, as elsewhere in the tropical world, there are surprises to be discovered. One thinks immediately of the description, in December 2004, of a new species of macaque from India - the Arunachal macaque Macaca munzala. I use the word description deliberately, because this species was long known to the local people, and the species name rightly reflects this knowledge. Mun zala means "deep-forest monkey" in the language of the Dirang Monpa people of Tawang and West Kameng Districts of Arunachal Pradesh, where this species lives. The new macaque was discovered by science during field trips to these areas by Indian scientists from the Nature Conservation Foundation in Mysore, the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bangalore, the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, and the International Snow Leopard Trust. In this habitat, the largely Buddhist local community abstains from killing wildlife for food or sport, although the monkey has been reportedly shot for crop raiding. This species, one of the world's highest-living primate species, lives at altitudes between 1,600 and 3,500m, and is thus a veritable yeti.

Stereoselective synthesis of styryl lactone, (+)-7-epi-goniofufurone was achieved in high yield via simple transformations from tartaric acid. The key step involves the successive stereoselective reduction of ketones with borohydride and selectride.

Elastic properties of Li2O-PbO-B2O3 glasses have been investigated using sound velocity measurements at 10 MHz. Four series of glasses have been investigated with different concentrations of Li2O, PbO and B2O3. The variations of molar volume have been examined for the influences of Li2O and PbO. The elastic moduli reveal trends in their compositional dependence. The bulk and shear modulus increases monotonically with increase in the concentration of tetrahedral boron which increases network dimensionality. The variation of bulk moduli has also been correlated to the variation in energy densities. The Poisson's ratio found to be insensitive to the concentration of tetrahedral boron in the structure. The experimental Debye temperatures are in good agreement with the expected theoretical values. Experimental observations have been examined in view, the presence of borate network and the possibility of non-negligible participation of lead in network formation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Two new alkali metal borophosphates, K-3[BP(3)o(9)(OH)(3)] and Rb-3[B2P3O11(OH)(2)], were synthesized by applying solvothermal techniques using ethanol as solvent. The crystal structures were solved by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (K-3[BP3O9(OH)(3)], monoclinic, C2/c (No. 15), a = 2454.6(8) pm, b = 736.3(2) pm, c = 1406.2(4) pm, beta = 118.35(2)degrees, Z = 8; Rb-3[B2P3O11(OH)(2)], monoclinic, P2(1)/c (No. 14), a = 781.6(2) pm, b:= 667.3(2) pm, c = 2424.8(5) pm, beta = 92.88(1)degrees, Z = 4). Both crystal structures comprise borophosphate chain anions. While for the rubidium compound a loop-branched chain motif is found as common for most of the chain anions in alkali metal borophosphates, the crystal structure of the potassium phase comprises the first open-branched chain with the highest phosphate content found so far in this group of compounds. Both chain anions are Closely related to known anhydrous or hydrated phases, and the structural relations are discussed in terms of how the presence of OH groups and hydrogen bonds as well as number, charge, and size of charge balancing cations influence the 3D structural arrangement. The anionic entities are classified in terms of general principles of structural systematics for borophosphates.

A new performance metric, Peak-Error Ratio (PER) has been presented to benchmark the performance of a class of neuron circuits to realize neuron activation function (NAF) and its derivative (DNAF). Neuron circuits, biased in subthreshold region, based on the asymmetric cross-coupled differential pair configuration and conventional configuration of applying small external offset voltage at the input have been compared on the basis of PER. It is shown that the technique of using transistor asymmetry in a cross-coupled differential pair performs on-par with that of applying external offset voltage. The neuron circuits have been experimentally prototyped and characterized as a proof of concept on the 1.5 mu m AMI technology.

La0.5Li0.5TiO3 perovskite was synthesized by various wet chemical methods. By adopting low temperature methods of preparation lithium loss from the material is prevented. La0.5Li0.5TiO3 (LLTO) was formed with cubic symmetry at 1473 K. LLTO was formed at relatively lower temperature by using hydrothermal preparation method. PVA gel-decomposition route yield tetragonal LLTO on annealing the dried gel at 1473 K. By using gel-carbonate route LiTi2O4 minor phase was found to remain even after heat-treatment at 1473 K. The hydroxylation of LLTO was done in deionized water as well as in dilute acetic acid medium. By hydroxylation process incorporation of hydroxyls and leaching out of Li+ was observed from the material. The Li+ concentration of these compositions was examined by AAS. The electrical conductivities of these compositions were measured by dc and ac impedance techniques at elevated temperatures. The activation energies of electrical conduction for these compositions were estimated from the experimental results. The measured activation energy of Li+ conduction is 0.34 eV. Unhydroxylated samples exhibit only Li+ conduction, whereas, the hydroxylated LLTO show proton conductivity at 298-550 K in addition to Li+ conductivity. The effect of Zr or Ce substitution in place of Ti were attempted. La0.5Li0.5ZrO3 Perovskite was not formed; instead pyrochlore phase (La2Zr2O7) along with monoclinic ZrO2 phases was observed above 1173 K; below 1173 K cubic ZrO2 is stable. (La0.5Li0.5)(2)CeO4 solid solution was formed in the case of Ce substitution at Ti sublattice on heat-treatment up to 1673 K. (c) 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

The air-water interface has traditionally been employed to prepare particle assemblies and films of metals and semiconductors. The interface between water and an organic liquid, however, has not been investigated sufficiently for possible use in preparing nanocrystals and thin films of materials. In this article, we demonstrate the use of the liquid-liquid interface as a medium for preparing ultrathin films of metals, chalcogenides and oxides. The method involves the reaction at the interface between a metal-organic compound in the organic layer and an appropriate reagent for reduction, sulfidation, etc. in the aqueous layer. Some of the materials discussed are nanocrystalline films of gold, CuS, CuSe, CuO, and Cu(OH)(2) formed at the liquid-liquid interface. The results reported in this article should demonstrate the versatility and potential of the liquid-liquid interface for preparing nanomaterials and ultrathin films and encourage further research in this area. The objective is to present the formulation of numerically integrated modified virtual crack closure integral technique for concentrically and eccentrically stiffened panels for computation of strain-energy release rate and stress intensity factor based on linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. Fracture analysis of cracked stiffened panels under combined tensile, bending, and shear loads has been conducted by employing the stiffened plate/shell finite element model, MQL9S2. This model can be used to analyze plates with arbitrarily located concentric/eccentric stiffeners, without increasing the total number of degrees of freedom, of the plate element. Parametric studies on fracture analysis of stiffened plates under combined tensile and moment loads have been conducted. Based on the results of parametric, studies, polynomial curve fitting has been carried out to get best-fit equations corresponding to each of the stiffener positions. These equations can be used for computation of stress intensity factor for cracked stiffened plates subjected to tensile and moment loads for a given plate size, stiffener configuration, and stiffener position without conducting finite element analysis.
