Excimer laser irradiation at ambient temperature has been employed to produce nanostructured silicon surfaces. Nanoindentation was used to investigate the nanomechanical properties of the deformed surfaces as a function of laser parameters, such as the angle of incidence and number of laser pulses at a fixed laser fluence of 5 J cm(-2). A single-crystal silicon 311] surface was severely damaged by laser irradiation and became nanocrystalline with an enhanced porosity. The resulting laser-treated surface consisted of nanometer-sized particles. The pore size was controlled by adjusting the angle of incidence and the number of laser pulses, and varied from nanometers to microns. The extent of nanocrystallinity was large for the surfaces irradiated at a small angle of incidence and by a high number of pulses, as confirmed by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The angle of incidence had a stronger effect on the structure and nanomechanical properties than the number of laser pulses.

In rapid parallel magnetic resonance imaging, the problem of image reconstruction is challenging. Here, a novel image reconstruction technique for data acquired along any general trajectory in neural network framework, called ``Composite Reconstruction And Unaliasing using Neural Networks'' (CRAUNN), is proposed. CRAUNN is based on the observation that the nature of aliasing remains unchanged whether the undersampled acquisition contains only low frequencies or includes high frequencies too. Here, the transformation needed to reconstruct the alias-free image from the aliased coil images is learnt, using acquisitions consisting of densely sampled low frequencies. Neural networks are made use of as machine learning tools to learn the transformation, in order to obtain the desired alias-free image for actual acquisitions containing sparsely sampled low as well as high frequencies. CRAUNN operates in the image domain and does not require explicit coil sensitivity estimation. It is also independent of the sampling trajectory used, and could be applied to arbitrary trajectories as well. As a pilot trial, the technique is first applied to Cartesian trajectory-sampled data. Experiments performed using radial and spiral trajectories on real and synthetic data, illustrate the performance of the method. The reconstruction errors depend on the acceleration factor as well as the sampling trajectory. It is found that higher acceleration factors can be obtained when radial trajectories are used. Comparisons against existing techniques are presented. CRAUNN has been found to perform on par with the state-of-the-art techniques. Acceleration factors of up to 4, 6 and 4 are achieved in Cartesian, radial and spiral cases, respectively. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Graphenes with varying number of layers can be synthesized by using different strategies. Thus, single-layer graphene is prepared by micromechanical cleavage, reduction of single-layer graphene oxide, chemical vapor deposition and other methods. Few-layer graphenes are synthesized by conversion of nanodiamond, arc discharge of graphite and other methods. In this article, we briefly overview the various synthetic methods and the surface, magnetic and electrical properties of the produced graphenes. Few-layer graphenes exhibit ferromagnetic features along with antiferromagnetic properties, independent of the method of preparation. Aside from the data on electrical conductivity of graphenes and graphene-polymer composites, we also present the field-effect transistor characteristics of graphenes. Only single-layer reduced graphene oxide exhibits ambipolar properties. The interaction of electron donor and acceptor molecules with few-layer graphene samples is examined in detail.

The fine-particle NASICON family of materials, MZr2P3O12(where M = Na, K, ½Ca and ¼Zr) and NbZrP3O12, have been prepared by the combustion of aqueous heterogeneous mixtures of stoichiometric amounts of metal nitrate, zirconyl nitrate, niobium phosphate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium perchlorate and carbohydrazide (CH) at 400 °C. The formation of NASICON materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR, solid-state (31P) NMR spectroscopy and thermal expansion coefficient measurements. The combustion-synthesized NASICON powders have an average agglomerate size of 913 µm with a specific surface area varying from 8 to 28 m2 g1. The powders pelletized and sintered in the range 11001200 °C for 5 h achieved 9597% theoretical density and showed fine-grain microstructure. The coefficient of thermal expansion of a sintered compact was measured up to 500 °C and ranged from 1.5 × 106°C1 to 1.0 × 106°C1 depending on the composition.

Heavily Mn-doped II-VI-V-2 semiconductors, such as CdGeP2 and ZnGeP2 have been prepared by depositing Mn on single crystalline substrate at nearly 400 T in an ultra high vacuum chamber. Well-defined ferromagnetic hysteresis with a saturation behavior appears in the magnetization curve up to above room temperature. The chemical states of the ZDGeP(2):Mn interface has been clarified by a careful in situ photoemission spectroscopy. The as-prepared surface consists of Ge-rich, metallic Mn compound. In and below the sub-surface region, dilute divalent Mn species as precursors of the DMS phase exist. No MnP phase was observed at any stage of the depth profile. Theoretical band-calculation suggests that the system with vacancies (Cd, V-c, Mn)GeP2 or a non-stoichiometric (Cd, Ge, Mn)GeP2 are ferromagnetic and energetically stable although ferromagnetism is not stable in a stoichiometric compound (Cd, Mn)GeP2. The local structural information in the near-neighbor region of superionic conducting glass (AgBr)0.4(Ag2O)0.3(GeO2)0.3 has been estimated from the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) measurements using Ge and Br K absorption edges. The possible atomic arrangements in the near-neighbor region of this glass were obtained by coupling the results with the least-squares variational method so as to reproduce two differential intensity profiles for Ge and Br as well as the ordinary scattering profile. The coordination number of oxygen around Ge is found to be 3.6 at a distance of 0.176 nm, suggesting the GeO4 tetrahedral unit as the probable structural entity in this glass. Moreover, the coordination number of Ag around Br is estimated as 6.3 at a distance of 0.284 nm, suggesting an arrangement similar to that in crystalline AgBr.
