The nucleotide sequence of genes 4 and 9, encoding the outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 of a serotype 10 tissue culture-adapted strain, 1321, representative of asymptomatic neonatal rotaviruses isolated from neonates in Bangalore, India, were determined. Comparison of nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of 1321 VP4 and VP7 with previously published sequences of various serotypes revealed that both genes were highly homologous to the respective genes of serotype 10 bovine rotavirus, B223. The VP4 of 1321 represents a new human P serotype and the 1321 and related strains represent the first description of neonatal rotaviruses that appear to derive both surface proteins from an animal rotavirus.
Instabilities induced by variation of Brunt-Vaisala frequency in compressible stratified shear flows

The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stably stratified, compressible fluid in the presence of a lower rigid boundary are studied. A jump in the Brunt-Vaisala frequency at a level different from the shear zone is introduced and the variation of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency with respect to the vertical coordinate in the middle layer of the three-layered model is considered. An analytic solution in each of the layers is obtained, and the dispersion relation is solved numerically for parameters relevant to the model. The effect of shear in the lowermost layer of the three-layered model for a Boussinesq fluid is discussed. The results are compared with the earlier studies of Lindzen and Rosenthal, and Sachdev and Satya Narayanan. In the present model, new unstable modes with larger growth rates are obtained and the most unstable gravity wave modes are found to agree closely with the observed ones at various heights. The terminal step in the oxidation of anthranilic acid to catechol by anthranilic acid oxidase system from Tecoma stans, which converts o-aminophenol to catechol has been studied in detail. The reaction catalyses the conversion of one molecule of o-aminophenol to one molecule each of ammonia and catechol. The partially purified enzyme has a pH optimum of 6·2 in citrate-phosphate buffer and a temperature optimum of 45°. The metal ions, Mg2+, Co2+ and Fe3+ were inhibitory to the reaction. Metal chelating agents like 8-hydroxyquinoline, o-phenanthroline, and diethyldithiocarbamate, caused a high degree of inhibition. A sulfhydryl requirement for the reaction was inferred from the inhibition of the reaction by p-chloromercuribenzoate and its reversal with GSH. Atebrin inhibition was reversed by addition of FAD to the reaction mixture.

Manganese dioxide is known to be an important electroactive material for supercapacitors. Generally, delta-MnO2 is subjected to electrochemical characterization studies in aqueous electrolytes of Na2SO4. It exhibits capacitance behaviour in the potential range between 0 and 1.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). In the present study, it is shown that delta-MnO2 exhibits capacitance behaviour in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolytes also. The suitable potential range in this electrolyte is also found to be 0-1.0 V. Specific capacitancemeasured in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolyte is 192 F g(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data confirm that Sr2+ ions get inserted onto delta-MnO2 anoparticles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A simple and versatile method for the synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepines from o-phenylenediamine and ketones in the presence of solvents and under solvent-free conditions that used an amorphous mesoporous iron aluminophosphate as catalyst was developed. High yields with excellent selectivity were obtained with a wide variety of ketones under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst had the advantages of ease of preparation, ease of handling, simple recovery, reusability, non toxicity, and being inexpensive.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(aip)(L)](ClO4)(2) (L = phtpy, 1; stpy, 2) and VO(pyip)(L)](ClO4)(2) (L = phtpy, 3; stpy, 4), where aip is 2-(9-anthryl)-1H-imidazo4,5-f]1,10] phenanthroline, pyip is 2-(1-pyrenyl)-1Himidazo4,5-f]1,10] phenanthroline, phtpy is (4'-phenyl)-2,2': 6',2 `'-terpyridine and stpy is (2,2': 6', 2 `'-terpyridin-4'-oxy) ethyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding and photocleavage activity, cellular uptake and photocytotoxicity in visible light were studied. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA (K-b similar to 10(5) mol(-1)). They efficiently cleave pUC19 DNA in red light of 705 nm via the formation of HO center dot species. The glucose appended complexes 2 and 4 showed higher photocytotoxicity in HeLa and Hep G2 cells over the normal HEK 293T cells. No such preference was observed for the phtpy complexes 1 and 3. No significant difference in IC50 values was observed for the HEK 293T cells. Cell cycle analysis showed that the glucose appended complexes 2 and 4 are more photocytotoxic in cancer cells than in normal cells. Fluorescence microscopy was done to study the cellular localization of complex 4 having a pendant pyrenyl group.

Boldyreva, Palacio and Warinschi introduced a multiple forking game as an extension of general forking. The notion of (multiple) forking is a useful abstraction from the actual simulation of cryptographic scheme to the adversary in a security reduction, and is achieved through the intermediary of a so-called wrapper algorithm. Multiple forking has turned out to be a useful tool in the security argument of several cryptographic protocols. However, a reduction employing multiple forking incurs a significant degradation of , where denotes the upper bound on the underlying random oracle calls and , the number of forkings. In this work we take a closer look at the reasons for the degradation with a tighter security bound in mind. We nail down the exact set of conditions for success in the multiple forking game. A careful analysis of the cryptographic schemes and corresponding security reduction employing multiple forking leads to the formulation of `dependence' and `independence' conditions pertaining to the output of the wrapper in different rounds. Based on the (in)dependence conditions we propose a general framework of multiple forking and a General Multiple Forking Lemma. Leveraging (in)dependence to the full allows us to improve the degradation factor in the multiple forking game by a factor of . By implication, the cost of a single forking involving two random oracles (augmented forking) matches that involving a single random oracle (elementary forking). Finally, we study the effect of these observations on the concrete security of existing schemes employing multiple forking. We conclude that by careful design of the protocol (and the wrapper in the security reduction) it is possible to harness our observations to the full extent.
