A minor addition of B to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, by similar to 0.1 wt pct, reduces its as-cast prior beta grain size by an order of magnitude, whereas higher B content leads to the presence of in situ formed TiB needles in significant amounts. An experimental investigation into the role played by these microstructural modifications on the high-temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V-xB alloys, with x varying between 0 wt pct and 0.55 wt pct, was conducted. Uniaxial compression tests were performed in the temperature range of 1023 K to 1273 K (750 degrees C to 1000 degrees C) and in the strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10(+1) s(-1). True stress-true strain responses of all alloys exhibit flow softening at lower strain rates and oscillations at higher strain rates. The flow softening is aided by the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization through lath globularization in high temperature (1173 K to 1273 K 900 degrees C to 1000 degrees C]) and a lower strain rate (10(-2) to 10(-3) s(-1)) regime. The grain size refinement with the B addition to Ti64, despite being marked, had no significant effect on this. Oscillations in the flow curve at a higher strain rate (10(0) to 10(+1) s(-1)), however, are associated with microstructural instabilities such as bending of laths, breaking of lath boundaries, generation of cavities, and breakage of TiB needles. The presence of TiB needles affected the instability regime. Microstructural evidence suggests that the matrix cavitation is aided by the easy fracture of TiB needles.

The hot deformation behavior of hot isostatically pressed (HIP) NIMONIC AP-1 superalloy is characterized using processing maps in the temperature range 950-degrees-C to 1200-degrees-C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s-1. The dynamic materials model has been used for developing the processing maps which show the variation of the efficiency of power dissipation given by [2m/(m +1)] with temperature and strain rate, with m being the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress. The processing map revealed a domain of dynamic recrystallization with a peak efficiency of 40 pct at 1125-degrees-C and 0.3 s-1, and these are the optimum parameters for hot working. The microstructure developed under these conditions is free from prior particle boundary (PPB) defects, cracks, or localized shear bands. At 100 s-1 and 1200-degrees-C, the material exhibits inter-crystalline cracking, while at 0.001 s-1, the material shows wedge cracks at 1200-degrees-C and PPB cracking at 1000-degrees-C. Also at strain rates higher than 10 s-1, adiabatic shear bands occur; the limiting conditions for this flow instability are accurately predicted by a continuum criterion based on the principles of irreversible thermodynamics of large plastic flow.
Strength of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composite after exposure to high temperatures (1000-1700 degrees C)
Resumo:
Residual strength (room temperature strength after exposure in air at high temperatures) of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composites was evaluated as function of SiC contents (10-30 vol%) as well as exposure temperatures for 5 h (1000-1700 degrees C). Multilayer oxide scale structures were found after exposures. The composition and thickness of these multilayered oxide scale structure was dependent on exposure temperature and SiC contents in composites. After exposure to 1000 degrees C for 5 h, the residual strength of ZrB2-SiC composites improved by nearly 60% compared to the as-hot pressed composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC. On the other hand, the residual strength of these composites remained unchanged after 1500 degrees C for 5 h. A drastic degradation in residual strength was observed in composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC after exposure to 1700 degrees C for 5 h in ZrB2-SiC. An attempt was made to correlate the microstructural changes and oxide scales with residual strength with respect to variation in SiC content and temperature of expsoure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In India, the low prevalence of HIV-associated dementia (HAD) in the Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype C infection is quite paradoxical given the high-rate of macrophage infiltration into the brain. Whether the direct viral burden in individual brain compartments could be associated with the variability of the neurologic manifestations is controversial. To understand this paradox, we examined the proviral DNA load in nine different brain regions and three different peripheral tissues derived from ten human subjects at autopsy. Using a highly sensitive TaqMan probe-based real-time PCR, we determined the proviral load in multiple samples processed in parallel from each site. Unlike previously published reports, the present analysis identified uniform proviral distribution among the brain compartments examined without preferential accumulation of the DNA in any one of them. The overall viral DNA burden in the brain tissues was very low, approximately 1 viral integration per 1000 cells or less. In a subset of the tissue samples tested, the HIV DNA mostly existed in a free unintegrated form. The V3-V5 envelope sequences, demonstrated a brain-specific compartmentalization in four of the ten subjects and a phylogenetic overlap between the neural and non-neural compartments in three other subjects. The envelope sequences phylogenetically belonged to subtype C and the majority of them were R5 tropic. To the best of our knowledge, the present study represents the first analysis of the proviral burden in subtype C postmortem human brain tissues. Future studies should determine the presence of the viral antigens, the viral transcripts, and the proviral DNA, in parallel, in different brain compartments to shed more light on the significance of the viral burden on neurologic consequences of HIV infection.

Polyaniline and graphene oxide composite on activated carbon cum reduced graphene oxide-supported supercapacitor electrodes are fabricated and electrochemically characterized in a three-electrode cell assembly. Attractive supercapacitor performance, namely high-power capability and cycling stability for graphene oxide/polyaniline composite, is observed owing to the layered and porous-polymeric-structured electrodes. Based on the materials characterization data in a three-electrode cell assembly, 1 V supercapacitor devices are developed and performance tested. A comparative study has also been conducted for polyaniline and graphene oxide/polyaniline composite-based 1 V supercapacitors for comprehending the synergic effect of graphene oxide and polyaniline. Graphene oxide/polyaniline composite-based capacitor that exhibits about 100 F g(-1) specific capacitance with faradaic efficiency in excess of 90% has its energy and power density values of 14 Wh kg(-1) and 72 kW kg(-1), respectively. Cycle-life data for over 1000 cycles reflect 10% capacitance degradation for graphene oxide/polyaniline composite supercapacitor.

Over the last few decades, there has been a significant land cover (LC) change across the globe due to the increasing demand of the burgeoning population and urban sprawl. In order to take account of the change, there is a need for accurate and up-to-date LC maps. Mapping and monitoring of LC in India is being carried out at national level using multi-temporal IRS AWiFS data. Multispectral data such as IKONOS, Landsat-TM/ETM+, IRS-ICID LISS-III/IV, AWiFS and SPOT-5, etc. have adequate spatial resolution (similar to 1m to 56m) for LC mapping to generate 1:50,000 maps. However, for developing countries and those with large geographical extent, seasonal LC mapping is prohibitive with data from commercial sensors of limited spatial coverage. Superspectral data from the MODIS sensor are freely available, have better temporal (8 day composites) and spectral information. MODIS pixels typically contain a mixture of various LC types (due to coarse spatial resolution of 250, 500 and 1000 in), especially in more fragmented landscapes. In this context, linear spectral unmixing would be useful for mapping patchy land covers, such as those that characterise much of the Indian subcontinent. This work evaluates the existing unmixing technique for LC mapping using MODIS data, using end-members that are extracted through Pixel Purity Index (PPI), Scatter plot and N-dimensional visualisation. The abundance maps were generated for agriculture, built up, forest, plantations, waste land/others and water bodies. The assessment of the results using ground truth and a LISS-III classified map shows 86% overall accuracy, suggesting the potential for broad-scale applicability of the technique with superspectral data for natural resource planning and inventory applications. Gelonin is a single chain ribosome inactivating protein (RIP) with potential application in the treatment of cancer and AIDS. Diffraction quality crystals grown using PEG3350, belong to the space group P2(1), with it a = 49.4 Angstrom b = 44.9 Angstrom, c = 137.4 Angstrom and beta = 98.4 degrees, and contain two molecules in the asymmetric unit. Diffraction data collected to 1.8 Angstrom resolution has a R(m) value of 7.3%. Structure of gelonin has been solved by the molecular replacement method, using ricin A chain as the search model. Crystallographic refinement using X-PLOR resulted in a model for which the r.m.s deviations from ideal bond lengths and bond angles are 0.012 Angstrom and 2.7 degrees, respectively The final R-factor is 18.4% for 39,806 reflections for which I > 1.0 sigma(I).The C-alpha atoms of the two molecules in the asymmetric unit superpose to within 0.38 Angstrom for 247 atom pairs. The overall fold of gelonin is similar to that of other RIPs such as ricin A chain and alpha-momorcharin, the r.m.s.d. for C-alpha superpositions being 1.3 and 1.4 Angstrom, respectively The-catalytic residues (Glu166, Arg169 and Tyr113) in the active site form a hydrogen bond scheme similar to that observed in other RIPs. The conformation of Tyr74 in the active site, however, is significantly different from that in alpha-momorcharin. Three well defined water molecules are located in the active site cavity and one of them, X319, superposes to within 0.2 Angstrom of a corresponding water molecule in the structure of alpha-momorcharin. Any of the three could be the substrate water molecule in the hydrolysis reaction catalysed by gelonin.Difference electron density for a N-linked sugar moiety has been observed near only one of the two potential glycosylation sites in the sequence. The amino acid at position 239 has been established as Lys by calculation of omit electron density maps. The two cysteine residues in the sequence, Cys44 and Cys50, form a disulphide bond, and are therefore not available for disulphide conjugation with antibodies. Based on the structure, the region of the molecule that is involved in intradimer interactions is suggested to be suitable for introducing a Cys residue for purposes of conjugation with an antibody to produce useful immunotoxins.

Plasma sprayable powders were prepared from ZrO2-CaO-CeO2 system using an organic binder and coated onto stainless steel substrates previously coated by a bond coat (Ni 22Cr 20Al 1.0Y) using plasma spraying. The coatings exhibited good thermal barrier characteristics and excellent resistance to thermal shock at 1000 degrees C under simulated laboratory conditions (90 half hour cycles without failure) and at 1200 degrees C under accelerated burner rig test conditions (500 2 min cycles without failure). No destabilization of cubic/tetragonal ZrO2 phase fraction occured either during the long hours (45 h cumulative) or the large number of thermal shock tests. Growth of a distinct SiO2 rich region within the ceramic was observed in the specimens thermal shock cycled at 1000 degrees C apart from mild oxidation of the bond coat. The specimens tested at 1200 degrees C had a glassy appearance on the top surface and exhibited severe oxidation of the bond coat at the ceramic-bond coat interface. The glassy appearance of the surface is due to the formation of a liquid silicate layer attributable to the impurity phase present in commercial grade ZrO2 powder. These observations are supported by SEM analysis and quantitative EDAX data.

The development of a microstructure in 304L stainless steel during industrial hot-forming operations, including press forging (mean strain rate of 0.15 s(-1)), rolling/extrusion (2-5 s(-1)), and hammer forging (100 s(-1)) at different temperatures in the range 600-1200 degrees C, was studied with a view to validating the predictions of the processing map. The results have shown that excellent correlation exists between the regimes exhibited by the map and the product microstructures. 304L stainless steel exhibits instability bands when hammer forged at temperatures below 1100 degrees C, rolled/extruded below 1000 degrees C, or press forged below 800 degrees C. All of these conditions must be avoided in mechanical processing of the material. On the other hand, ideally, the material may be rolled, extruded, or press forged at 1200 degrees C to obtain a defect-free microstructure.

High microwave susceptibility of NaH2PO4 . 2H(2)O has been discovered, This hydrated acid phosphate of sodium can be heated upto 1000 K or more when exposed to 2.45 GHz microwaves. Using this, a novel microwave-assisted preparation of a number of important crystalline and glassy materials with NASICON-type chemistry has been accomplished in less than 8 min which is only a fraction of the time required for conventional synthetic procedures, The present single-shot approach to the preparation of phosphates is attractive in terms of its simplicity, rapidity, and general applicability, A ''step-ladder'' heating mechanism has been proposed to account for the high microwave absorbing ability of NaH2PO4 . 2H(2)O.
