Uncertainties associated with the structural model and measured vibration data may lead to unreliable damage detection. In this paper, we show that geometric and measurement uncertainty cause considerable problem in damage assessment which can be alleviated by using a fuzzy logic-based approach for damage detection. Curvature damage factor (CDF) of a tapered cantilever beam are used as damage indicators. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is used to study the changes in the damage indicator due to uncertainty in the geometric properties of the beam. Variation in these CDF measures due to randomness in structural parameter, further contaminated with measurement noise, are used for developing and testing a fuzzy logic system (FLS). Results show that the method correctly identifies both single and multiple damages in the structure. For example, the FLS detects damage with an average accuracy of about 95 percent in a beam having geometric uncertainty of 1 percent COV and measurement noise of 10 percent in single damage scenario. For multiple damage case, the FLS identifies damages in the beam with an average accuracy of about 94 percent in the presence of above mentioned uncertainties. The paper brings together the disparate areas of probabilistic analysis and fuzzy logic to address uncertainty in structural damage detection.

In this study we investigated the possibility of treating Heymann's Nephritis (HN) by destroying antibody producing cells by targetting a toxin, gelonin - conjugated to gp330, the renal brush border antigen. HN was induced in rats by immunizing them with purified gp330. The gelonin-gp330 conjugate was administered 12 days after the antigenic challenge. Serum was screened for circulating antibodies. Proteinurea was estimated. The gp330-gelonin conjugate-treated animals had a circulating antibody titre in the serum much lower than that of diseased (untreated) animals. Proteinurea seen in diseased animals was not observed in treated animals. This work suggests the possibility of using a toxin-antigen conjugate for immunomodulating antibody mediated autoimmune renal disease.
An asymptotic analysis for the coupled dispersion characteristics of a structural acoustic waveguide
Resumo:
Analytical expressions are derived, using asymptotics, for the fluid-structure coupled wavenumbers in a one-dimensional (1-D) structural acoustic waveguide. The coupled dispersion equation of the system is rewritten in the form of the uncoupled dispersion equation with an added term due to the fluid-structure coupling. As a result of this coupling, the prior uncoupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers, now become coupled structural and acoustic wavenumbers. A fluid-loading parameter e, defined as the ratio of mass of fluid to mass of the structure per unit area, is introduced which when set to zero yields the uncoupled dispersion equation. The coupled wavenumber is then expressed in terms of an asymptotic series in e. Analytical expressions are found as e is varied from small to large values. Different asymptotic expansions are used for different frequency ranges with continuous transitions occurring between them. This systematic derivation helps to continuously track the wavenumber solutions as the fluid-loading parameter is varied from small to large values. Though the asymptotic expansion used is limited to the first-order correction factor, the results are close to the numerical results. A general trend is that a given wavenumber branch transits from a rigid-walled solution to a pressure-release solution with increasing E. Also, it is found that at any frequency where two wavenumbers intersect in the uncoupled analysis, there is no more an-intersection in the coupled case, but a gap is created at that frequency. The problem of identifying parameters of nonlinear vibrating systems using spatially incomplete, noisy, time-domain measurements is considered. The problem is formulated within the framework of dynamic state estimation formalisms that employ particle filters. The parameters of the system, which are to be identified, are treated as a set of random variables with finite number of discrete states. The study develops a procedure that combines a bank of self-learning particle filters with a global iteration strategy to estimate the probability distribution of the system parameters to be identified. Individual particle filters are based on the sequential importance sampling filter algorithm that is readily available in the existing literature. The paper develops the requisite recursive formulary for evaluating the evolution of weights associated with system parameter states. The correctness of the formulations developed is demonstrated first by applying the proposed procedure to a few linear vibrating systems for which an alternative solution using adaptive Kalman filter method is possible. Subsequently, illustrative examples on three nonlinear vibrating systems, using synthetic vibration data, are presented to reveal the correct functioning of the method. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The long-wave lattice dynamics of rutile has been studied using a rigid ion model. The vibration frequencies for the zero wavevector have been calculated using the expressions for the frequencies of the normal modes derived group theoretically. The observed Raman and infrared frequencies have been explained.

We describe in this paper the synthesis and characterization of a new layered phosphate, MoOPO4 . 2H(2)O (I), and its intercalation chemistry. The phosphate I, crystallizing in a tetragonal structure (a = 6.375(7), c = 7.80(1) Angstrom, and Z = 2) similar to that of VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, has been synthesized by the reduction of MoO2(HPO4). H2O (II) using ethylene glycol in an CH3CN medium at similar to 60 degrees C. Interestingly, I could be readily oxidized back to II using Br-2 in CH3CN at room temperature. Considering the close structural relationship existing between I and II, it is likely that the reduction and oxidation of the phosphates proceed by a topotactic mechanism. I is a novel layered host intercalating a variety of organic bases such as n-alkylamines, pyridine, and aniline, mainly through an acid-base interaction. Unlike VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, I does not exhibit reductive intercalation reactivity.

Silicon oxide films were deposited by reactive evaporation of SiO. Parameters such as oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature were varied to get variable and graded index films. Films with a refractive index in the range 1.718 to 1.465 at 550 nm have been successfully deposited. Films deposited using ionized oxygen has the refractive index 1.465 at 550 nm and good UV transmittance like bulk fused quartz. Preparation of graded index films was also investigated by changing the oxygen partial pressure during deposition. A two layer antireflection coating at 1064nm has been designed using both homogeneous and inhomogeneous films and studied their characteristics.
