One of the desired properties for any new biomaterial composition is its long-term stability in a suitable animal model and such property cannot be appropriately assessed by performing short-term implantation studies. While hydroxyapatite (HA) or bioglass coated metallic biomaterials are being investigated for in vivo biocompatibility properties, such study is not extensively being pursued for bulk glass ceramics. In view of their inherent brittle nature, the implant stability as well as impact of long-term release of metallic ions on bone regeneration have been a major concern. In this perspective, the present article reports the results of the in vivo implantation experiments carried out using 100% strontium (Sr)-substituted glass ceramics with the nominal composition of 4.5 SiO2-3Al(2)O(3)-1.5P(2)O(5)-3SrO-2SrF(2) for 26 weeks in cylindrical bone defects in rabbit model. The combination of histological and micro-computed tomography analysis provided a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the bone regeneration around the glass ceramic implants in comparison to the highly bioactive HA bioglass implants (control). The sequential polychrome labeling of bone during in vivo osseointegration using three fluorochromes followed by fluorescence microscopy observation confirmed homogeneous bone formation around the test implants. The results of the present study unequivocally confirm the long-term implant stability as well as osteoconductive property of 100% Sr-substituted glass ceramics, which is comparable to that of a known bioactive implant, that is, HA-based bioglass. Phase relations in the pseudoternary system CaO-CoO-SiO2 have been established at 1323 K. Three quaternary oxides were found to be stable: CaCoSi2O6 with clinopyroxene (Cpx), Ca2CoSi2O7 with melilite (Mel), and CaCoSiO4 with olivine (Ol) structures. The Gibbs energies of formation of the quaternary oxides from their component binary oxides were measured using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte in the temperature range of 1000-1324 K. The results can be summarized as follows: CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> CaCoSi2O6 (Cpx), Delta G(f)(0) = -117920 + 11.26T (+/-150) J/mol CoO (rs) + 2CaO (rs) + 2SiO(2) (Qtz) --> Ca2CoSi2O7 (Mel), Delta G(f)(0) = -192690 + 2.38T (+/-130) J/mol CoO (rs) + CaO (rs) + SiO2 (Qtz) --> CaCoSiO2 (Ol), Delta G(f)(0) = -100325 + 2.55T (+/-100) J/mol where rs = rock salt (NaCl) structure and Qtz = quartz. The uncertainty limits correspond to twice the standard error estimate. The experimentally observed miscibility gaps along the joins CaO-CoO and CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 were used to calculate the excess free energies of mixing for the solid solutions CaxCo1-xO and (CayCo1-y)CoSiO4:Delta G(E) = X(1 - X)[31975X + 26736 (1 - X)] J/mol and Delta G(E) = 23100 (+/-250) Y(1 - Y) J/mol. A T-X phase diagram for the binary CaO-CoO was computed from the thermodynamic information; the diagram agrees with information available in the literature. The computed miscibility gap along the CaCoSiO4-Co2SiO4 join is associated with a critical temperature of 1389 (+/-15) K. Stability fields for the various solid solutions and the quaternary compounds are depicted on chemical-potential diagrams for SiO2, CaO, and CoO at 1323 K.

The isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system NiO-MgO-SiO2 at 1373 K is established, The tie lines between (NiXMg1-X)O solid solution with rock salt structure and orthosilicate solid solution (NiYMg1-Y)Si0.5O2 and between orthosilicate and metasilicate (NiZMg1-Z)SiO3 crystalline solutions are determined using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and lattice parameter measurement on equilibrated samples, Although the monoxides and orthosilicates of Ni and Mg form a continuous range of solid solutions, the metasilicate phase exists only for 0 < Z < 0.096, The activity of NiO in the rock salt solid solution is determined as a function of composition and temperature in the range of 1023 to 1377 K using a solid state galvanic cell, The Gibbs energy of mixing of the monoxide solid solution can be expressed by a pseudo-subregular solution model: Delta G(ex) = X(1 - X)[(-2430 + 0.925T)X + (-5390 + 1.758T)(1 - X)] J/mol, The thermodynamic data for the rock salt phase are combined with information on interphase partitioning of Ni and Mg to generate the mixing properties for the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions, The regular solution model describes the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions at 1373 K within experimental uncertainties, The regular solution parameter Delta G(ex)/Y(1 - Y) is -820 (+/-70) J/mol for the orthosilicate solid solution, The corresponding value for the metasilicate solid solution is -220 (+/-150) J/mol, The derived activities for the orthosilicate solid solution are discussed in relation to the intracrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between M1 and M2 sites. The tie line information, in conjunction with the activity data for orthosilicate and metasilicate solid solutions, is used to calculate the Gibbs energy changes for the intercrystalline ion exchange reactions, Combining this with the known data for NiSi0.5O2, Gibbs energies of formation of MgSi0.5O2, MgSiO3, and metastable NiSiO3 are calculated, The Gibbs energy of formation of NiSiO3, from its component oxides, is equal to 7.67 (+/-0.6) kJ/mol at 1373 K.

The tie lines between (CoXMg1−X)O solid solution with rock salt structure and orthosilicate solid solution (CoYMg1−Y)-Si0.5O2, and between orthosilicate and metasilicate (CoZMg1-Z)SiO3 crystalline solutions, have been determined experimentally at 1373 K. The compositions of coexisting phases have been determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and lattice parameter measurement on equilibrated samples. The metasilicate solid solution exists only for 0 > Z > 0.213. The activity of CoO in the rock salt solid solution was determined as a function of composition and temperature in the range of 1023 to 1373 K using a solid-state galvanic cell: Pt, (CoXMg1−X)O+Co|(Y2O3)ZrO2|Co+CoO, Pt The free energy of mixing of (CoXMg1−X)O crystalline solution can be expressed by the equation ΔGE=X(1 −X)[(6048 − 2.146T)X+ (8745 − 3.09T)(1 −X)] J·mol−1 The thermodynamic data for the rock salt phase is combined with information on interphase partitioning of Co and Mg to generate the mixing properties for the ortho- and metasilicate solid solutions. For the orthosilicate solution (CoYMg1 −Y)Si0.5O2 at 1373 K, the excess Gibbs free energy of mixing is given by the relation ΔGE=Y(1 −Y)[2805Y+ 3261(1 −Y)] J·mol−1 For the metasilicate solution (CoZMg1 −Z)SiO3 at the same temperature, the excess free energy can be expressed by the relation ΔGE=Z(1 −Z)[2570Z+ 3627(1 −Z)] J·mol−1

Sub-solidus phase relations in the ternary systems CaO-RuO2-SiO2 and CaO-RuO2-V2O5 have been refined using thermodynamic data on calcium ruthenates, silicates and vanadates. Tie lines are established by considering Gibbs energy change for exchange reactions. Quaternary oxides have not been detected in these systems. Because of the relatively large entropy associated with phase transition of Ca2SiO4 from olivine to alpha' structure at 1120 K, reversal of one tie line is seen in the system CaO-RuO2-SiO2 between 950 and 1230 K. There is no change in sub-solidus phase relation as a function of temperature in the system CaO-RuO2-V2O5. Since vanadium can exist in several lower oxidation states, the computed sub-solidus phase relations are valid only at high oxygen partial pressures. There is fair agreement between the computed phase diagram and the limited experimental information available for CaO-deficient compositions in the literature. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The Central Atoms model presented by the authors in an earlier paper is extended to ternary silicate and alumino-silicate melts. The model is applied to the CaO-FeO-SiO2 and the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. Use is made of the parameters from the relevant binaries only. The agreement between experimental and calculated isoactivity curves is good in all cases.

Supported catalysts containing 15 wt.% of molybdenum have been prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. CaO, MgO, Al2O3, Zr(OH)4 and Al(OH)3 have been used as supports for the preparation of supported Mo catalysts. Characterisation of all the materials prepared has been carried out through BET surface area measurement, X-ray diffractometry and FT-IR spectroscopy. Catalytic activity measurements have been carried out with reference to structure-sensitive benzyl alcohol conversion in the liquid phase. The percentage conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and toluene varied over a large range depending on the support used for the preparation of catalysts, indicating the importance of the support on catalytic activity of Mo catalysts. Al(OH)3 has been found to be the best support for molybdenum among all the supports used. Support–metal interaction (SMI) has been found to play an important role in determining the catalytic activity of supported catalysts.

Gels of various composition containing SiO2, Al2O3, and P2O5 have been investigated by employing high resolution magic-angle-spinning (MAS) 27Al, 29Si, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Changes occurring in the NMR spectra as the gels are progressively heated have been examined to understand the nature of structural changes occurring during the crystallization of the gels. 27Al resonance is sensitive to changes in the coordination number even when the Al concentration is as low as 1 mol%. As the percentage of Al increases, the hydroxyl groups tend to be located on the Al sites while Si remains as SiO4/2 (Q4). Mullite is the major phase formed at higher temperature in the aluminosilicate gels. In the case of the silicophosphate gels, Si is present in the form of Q4 and Q3 species. There is a change in the coordination of Si from four to six as the gel is heated. The formation of six-coordinated Si is facilitated even at lower temperatures (~673 K) when the P2O5 content is high. The phosphorus atoms present as orthophosphoric acid units in the xerogels change over to metaphosphate-like units as the gel is heated to higher temperatures. In aluminosilicophosphates, Si is present as Q4 and Q3 species while P is present as metaphosphate units; Al in these gels seems to be inducted into the tetrahedral network positions.

Hollow nanotubes of SiO2, Al2O3, V2O5, and MoO3 have been prepared using carbon nanotubes as templates. The procedure involves coating the carbon nanotubes with tetraethylorthosilicate, aluminum isopropoxide, or vanadium pentoxide gel, followed by calcination and heating at higher temperatures in air to oxidize the carbon. SiO2 nanotubes containing transition metal ions have been prepared by this procedure since such materials may be of use in catalysis.

The standard Gibbs energy of formation of the spinel MgAl2O4 from component oxides, MgO and α-Al2O3, has been determined in the temperature range 900 to 1250 K using a solid-state cell incorporating single-crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cell can be represented as—Pt,O2,MgO+MgF2|CaF2|MgF2+MgAl2O4+α-Al2O3,O2,Pt—The standard Gibbs energy of formation from binary oxides, computed from the reversible emf, can be represented by the expression—capdeltaG°f,ox=−23600 − 5.91T(±150) J/mol—The ‘second-law’ enthalpy of formation of MgAl2O4 obtained in this study is in good agreement with high-temperature solution calorimetric studies reported in the literature.

CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5-MgO bearing slags are typical in the basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) process. The partition ratio of phosphorus between slag and steel is an index of the phosphorus holding capacity of the slag, which determines the phosphorus content achievable in the finished steel. The influences of FeO concentration and basicity on the equilibrium phosphorus partition ratios were experimentally determined at temperatures of 1873 and 1923 K, for conditions of MgO saturation. The partition ratio initially increased with basicity but attained a constant value beyond basicity of 2.5. An increase in FeO concentration up to approximately 13 to 14 mass pet was beneficial for phosphorus partition.

Zirconia-based solid electrolytes with zircon (ZrSiO4) as the auxiliary electrode have been suggested of sensing silicon concentrations in iron and steel melts. A knowledge of phase relations in the ternary system MO-SiO2-ZrO2 (M = Ca, Mg) is useful for selecting an appropriate auxiliary electrode. In this investigation, an isothermal section for the phase diagram of the system CaO-SiO2ZrO2 at 1573 K has been established by equilibrating mixtures of component oxides in air, followed by quenching and phase identification by optical miroscopy, energy disperse analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The equilibrium phase relations have also been confirmed by computation using the available thermodynamic data on condensed phases in the system. The results indicate that zircon is not in thermodynamic equilibrium with calcia-stabilized zirconia or calcium zirconate. The silica containing phase in equilibrium with stabilized zirconia is Ca3ZrSi2O9. Calcium zirconate can coexist with Ca3ZrSi2O9 and Ca2SiO4.

The activities of CaO and Al2O3 in lime-alumina melts were studied by Knudsen cell-mass spectrometry at 2060 K. Emf of solid state cells, with CaF2 as the electrolyte, was measured from 923 to 1223 K to obtain the free energies of formation of the interoxide compounds. The results are critically evaluated in the light of data reported in the literature on phase equilibria, activities in melts, and stabilities of compounds. A coherent set of data is presented, including the previously unknown free energy of formation of CaO.6Al2O3 and the temperature dependence of activities in the liquid phase.

The high temperature region of the MnO-A1203 phase diagram has been redetermined to resolve some discrepancies reported in the literature regarding the melting behaviour of MnA1,04. This spinel was found to melt congruently at 2108 (+ 15) K. Theactivity of MnOin MnO-Al,03 meltsand in the two phase regions, melt + MnAI,04 and MnAI2O4 + A1203, has been determined by measuring the manganese concentration in platinum foils in equilibrium under controlled oxygen potentials. The activity of MnO obtained in this study for M ~ O - A I ,m~el~ts is in fair agreement with the results of Sharma and Richardson.However. the alumina-rich melt is found to be in equilibrium with MnAl,04 rather than AI2O3. as suggested by ~ha rmaan d Richardson. The value for the acthity of MnO in the M~AI ,O,+ A1,03 two phaseregion permits a rigorous application of the Gibbs-Duhem equation for calculating the activity of A1203 and the integral Gibbs' energy of mixing of MnO-A1203 melts, which are significantly different from those reported in the literature.
