We have designed and synthesized three novel compounds, 5-isopropylidiene derivatives of 3-dimethyl-2-thio-hydantoin (ITH-1), 3-ethyl-2-thio-2,4-oxazolidinedione (ITO-1), and 5-benzilidene-3-ethyl rhodanine (BTR-1), and have tested their chemotherapeutic properties. Our results showed that all three compounds induced cytotoxicity in a time-and concentration-dependent manner on leukemic cell line, CEM. Among the compounds tested, BTR-1 was 5- to 7-fold more potent than ITH-1 and ITO-1 when compared by trypan blue and MTT assays. IC50 value of BTR-1 was estimated to be <10 mu M. Both cell cycle analysis and tritiated thymidine assays revealed that BTR-1 affects DNA replication by inducing a block at S phase. BTR-1 treatment led to increased level of ROS production and DNA strand breaks suggesting activation of apoptosis for induction of cell death. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The insulin-like growth factors (IGEs; IGF-1 and IGF-2) play central roles in cell growth, differentiation, survival, transformation and metastasis. The biologic effects of the IGFs are mediated by the IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R), a receptor tyrosine kinase with homology to the insulin receptor (IR). Dysregulation of the ICE system is well recognized as a key contributor to the progression of multiple cancers, with IGF-1R activation increasing the tumorigenic potential of breast, prostate, lung, colon and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Despite this relationship, targeting the IGF-1R has only recently undergone development as a molecular cancer therapeutic. As it has taken hold, we are witnessing a robust increase and interest in targeting the inhibition of IGF-1R signaling. This is accentuated by the list of over 30 drugs, including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that are under evaluation as single agents or in combination therapies 1]. The ICE-binding proteins (IGFBPs) represent the third component of the ICE system consisting of a class of six soluble secretory proteins. They represent a unique class of naturally occurring ICE-antagonists that bind to and sequester IGF-1 and IGF-2, inhibiting their access to the IGF-1R. Due to their dual targeting of the IGFs without affecting insulin action, the IGFBPs are an untapped ``third'' class of IGF-1R inhibitors. in this commentary, we highlight some of the significant aspects of and prospects for targeting the IGF-1R and describe what the future may hold. Well uniform microspheres of phase pure Covellite were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal approach using poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactant. The micro-spheres were constituted of numerous self-organized knitted nano-ribbons of similar to 30 nm thickness. The effect of conc. PVP in the hydrothermal precursor solution on the product morphology was investigated. Based on the out-coming product micro-architecture a growth mechanism was proposed which emphasized bubbled nucleation inside the hydrothermal reactor. In a comparative study on linear optical properties, enhancement of luminescent intensity was observed for nano-ribbon clung microspheres rather than that of agglomerates of distorted particles, which may be attributed to better crystallinity as well as reduced surface defects and ionic vacancies for ribbon-like nano-structures.

Grain growth kinetics was studied for commercially pure magnesium subjected to equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). The specimens were ECAE processed upto 4 passes at 523 K following all the three important routes, namely A, 13, and C. Texture and microstructures of the samples were studied using Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) technique in a Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM). It was observed that the grain size significantly reduces after ECAE. ECAE process produces a slightly rotated B and C-2 fiber. Static annealing leads to normal grain growth with unimodal distribution of grains through out the temperature range. Average activation energy for grain growth in the temperature range studied is found to be less than the activation energy for lattice diffusion and grain boundary diffusion of magnesium. No significant change in texture during isochronal annealing for 1 hour i.e., the predominant deformation texture remains same.

The existing models describing electrochemical phase formation involving both adsorption and a nucleation/growth process are modified. The limiting cases leading to the existing models are discussed. The characteristic features of the potentiostatic transients are presented. A generalization of the Avrami ansatz is given for two or more competitive irreversibly growing phases.

The oxidation of liquid Al–Mg–Si alloys at 900–1400 °C was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The development of a semi-protective surface layer of MgO/MgAl2O4 allows the continuous formation of an Al2O3-matrix composite containing an interpenetrating network of metal microchannels at 1000–1350 °C. An initial incubation period precedes bulk oxidation, wherein Al2O3 grows from a near-surface alloy layer by reaction of oxygen supplied by the dissolution of the surface oxides and Al supplied from a bulk alloy reservoir through the microchannel network. The typical oxidation rate during bulk growth displays an initial acceleration followed by a parabolic deceleration in a regime apparently limited by Al transport to the near-surface layer. Both regimes may be influenced by the Si content in this layer, which rises due to preferential Al and Mg oxidation. The growth rates increase with temperature to a maximum at ~1300 °C, with a nominal activation energy of 270 kJ/mole for an Al-2.85 wt. % Mg-5.4 wt. % Si alloy in O2 at furnace temperatures of 1000–1300 °C. An oscillatory rate regime observed at 1000–1075 °C resulted in a banded structure of varying Al2O3-to-metal volume fraction.

L-arginine phosphate monohydrate (LAP) is a relatively new organic nonlinear optical material. In this paper, the results of our recent investigations on the growth of this crystal are presented. The growth of the undesirable micro-organisms was prevented by protecting the solution surface by placing a thick layer of n-hexane over it. Colouration of the solution could be avoided by keeping the growth temperature low and by protecting it from light. The effect of pH value of the solution on the solubility and habit was analysed. The grown crystals were characterized by means of X-ray topography.
