A new, flexible, gas barrier material has been synthesized by exfoliating organically modified nano-clays (MMT) in the blends of Surlyn (PEMA) using a copolymer of vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and demonstrated as a gas barrier material. The materials were characterized by Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) and UV-visible spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile studies. The oxygen and water-vapor permeabilities of the fabricated films were determined by calcium degradation test and a novel permeability setup based on cavity ring down spectroscopy, respectively. Hierarchical simulations of these materials helped us to understand the effect of intermolecular interactions on diffusivities of oxygen and water molecules in these materials. Schottky structured poly(3-hexylthiophene) based organic devices were encapsulated with the fabricated films and aging studies were carried under accelerated conditions. Based on permeability test results and accelerated aging studies, the fabricated PEMA/EVOH/MMT composites were found to be effective in decreasing the permeabilities for gases by about two orders of magnitude and maintaining the lifetime of organic devices.

The structural landscape of acid-pyridine cocrystals is explored by adopting a combinatorial matrix method with 4-substituted benzoic acids and 4-substituted pyridines. The choice of the system restricts the primary synthon to the robust acid-pyridine entity. This methodology accordingly provides hints toward the formation of secondary synthons. The pK(a) rule is validated in the landscape by taking all components of the matrix together and exploring it as a whole. Along with the global features, the exploration of landscapes reveals some local features. Apart from the identification of secondary synthons, it also sheds light on the propensity of hydration in cocrystals, synthon competition, and certain topological similarities. The method described here combines two approaches, namely, database analysis and high throughput crystallography, to extract more information with minimal extra experimental effort.

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) is an aliphatic polyester widely used for biomedical applications but lacks the mechanical properties desired for many load-bearing orthopedic applications. The objective of this study was to prepare and characterize PCL composites incorporating multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with different surface functional groups. PCL composites were prepared by melt-mixing with three different types of MWNTs: pristine (pMWNT), amine functionalized (aMWNT), and carboxyl functionalized (cMWNT). Melt rheology and scanning electron microscopy indicated good dispersion of the nanotubes in the matrix. Tensile strength and elastic modulus of the polymer was significantly increased by the incorporation of MWNTs and further enhanced by favorable interactions between PCL and aMWNTs. Thermal analysis revealed that MWNTs act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for crystallization of PCL and increase polymer crystallinity. Incorporation of functionalized MWNTs increased the surface water wettability of PCL. Osteoblast proliferation and differentiation was significantly enhanced on functionalized composites. aMWNT composites also exhibited the best bactericidal response. This study demonstrates that surface functionalization of MWNTs profoundly influences the properties of PCL and amine-functionalization offers the optimal combination of mechanical properties, osteogenesis and antimicrobial response. These results have important implications for designing nanocomposites for use in orthopedics.

A new series of luminescent 4-(2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles containing three ring systems, viz. methoxy pyridine, benzonitrile and alkoxy benzene with variable alkoxy chain length, with bent-core structures were synthesized as potential mesogens and characterized by spectral techniques. Their liquid crystalline behavior was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements. The study reveals that compounds with shorter chain lengths i.e. m = 4] exclusively exhibit the nematic phase while compounds with longer chain lengths i.e. m = 6-14 (only even)] show predominantly the orthorhombic columnar phase. Single crystal X-ray analysis of 4-(2-(4-butyloxy/octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles reveals that they possess slightly non-planar unsymmetrical bent structures and their molecular packing consists of nonconventional H-bond interactions; it also explains the observed liquid crystalline phase. An optical study indicates that the title compounds are good blue emitting materials showing absorption and emission bands in the range 335-345 nm and 415-460 nm, respectively. An electrochemical study of 4-(2-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitrile shows a band gap of 1.89 eV with HOMO and LUMO energy levels of -5.06 and -3.17 eV, respectively. Also, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm its optimized geometry, electronic absorption and frontier molecular orbital distributions.

The rheology of a poly(alpha-olefin) base oil (PAO) in a sliding point contact has been investigated by total internal reflection (TIR) Raman spectroscopy. TIR Raman has the sensitivity to analyse nanometer-thick lubricant films in a tribological contact. The Raman signal generated from the sliding contact was used to determine the lubricant film thickness. The experimentally obtained film thicknesses were compared with theoretical calculations and a transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian behaviour was observed at high shear rates. The Raman spectra showed no significant changes in the conformation of the PAO chains under the applied conditions of pressure and shear, but the polarisation dependence of the spectra revealed a preferred orientation of the hydrocarbon side chains in the shear-thinned region. Monolayers formed by a boundary lubricant, arachidic acid, dissolved in the PAO could be detected on the surfaces in the elastohydrodynamic regime.

Polymorphic cocrystals of urea:4,4'-bipyridine and salicylic acid: 4,4'-bipyridine were obtained by crystallization from different solvents. The urea tape is a rare phenomenon in cocrystals but it is consistent in urea:4,4'-bipyridine polymorphic cocrystals. The polymorph obtained from MeCN has symmetrical N-H...N hydrogen bond distances on either side of the urea tape. However, the other form obtained from MeOH has unsymmetrical N-H...N hydrogen bond lengths. In the polymorphic cocrystals of salicylic acid:4,4'-bipyridine, the basic supramolecular synthon acid-pyridine is the same but the 3D packing is different. Both the polymorphic pairs of cocrystals come under the category of packing polymorphs. All polymorphs were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), PXRD, DSC, FT-IR and HSM. N-H...N and the acid-pyridine supramolecular synthons were insulated by FT-IR vibrational spectroscopy.

The objective of this work was to develop a versatile strategy for preparing biodegradable polymers with tunable properties for biomedical applications. A family of xylitol-based cross-linked polyesters was synthesized by melt condensation. The effect of systematic variation of chain length of the diacid, stoichiometric ratio, and postpolymerization curing time on the physicochemical properties was characterized. The degradation rate decreased as the chain length of the diacid increased. The polyesters synthesized by this approach possess a diverse spectrum of degradation (ranging from similar to 4 to 100% degradation in 7 days), mechanical strength (from 0.5 to similar to 15 MPa) and controlled release properties. The degradation was a first-order process and the rate constant of degradation decreased linearly as the hydrophobicity of the polyester increased. In controlled release studies, the order of diffusion increased with chain length and curing time. The polymers were found to be cytocompatible and are thus suitable for possible use as biodegradable polymers. This work demonstrates that this particular combinatorial approach to polymer synthesis can be used to prepare biomaterials with independently tunable properties.

Poly(ether imine) dendritic macromolecules were undertaken to study the reversible dendrimer monomer-megamer assembly-disassembly in aqueous solutions. Synthesis of thiol functionalized poly(ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimers and their covalent aggregation behavior in the aqueous solution of ethanol/water (2:1) is demonstrated. The dendritic megamers were characterized using microscopic techniques. Kinetics of the aggregation behavior was followed using turbidity measurements, light-scattering and atomic force microscopic techniques. Inherent luminescence behavior of PETIM dendrimer monomers was retained in the dendrimer megamers also, which allowed visualization of the megamers through confocal microscopy. Extent of thiol functionalities that remained after the megamer assembly was estimated through Ellman's assay. Subsequent to megamer assembly, disassembly of megamers to dendrimer monomers was conducted, using dithiothreitol reagent. Water-insoluble sudan I dye was encapsulated in dendrimer megamer and subsequent release profile was assessed during the disassembly in aqueous solutions. The studies were conducted using first, second and third generations, representing 4, 8 and 16 sulfhydryl groups at their peripheries of dendrimers, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Despite advances in regenerative medicine, the cost of such therapies is beyond the reach of many patients globally in part due to the use of expensive biomedical polymers. Large volumes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in municipal waste is a potential source of low cost polymers. A novel polyester was prepared by a catalyst-free, melt polycondensation reaction of bis(hydroxyethylene) terephthalate derived from PET post-consumer waste with other multi-functional monomers from renewable sources such as citric acid, sebacic acid and D-mannitol. The mechanical properties and degradation rate of the polyester can be tuned by varying the composition and the post-polymerization time. The polyester was found to be elastomeric, showed excellent cytocompatibility in vitro and elicited minimal immune response in vivo. Three-dimensional porous scaffolds facilitated osteogenic differentiation and mineralization. This class of polyester derived from low cost, recycled waste and renewable sources is a promising candidate for use in regenerative medicine.

NMR relaxation rates (1/T-1), magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity studies in doped poly-3-methylthiophene are reported in this paper. The magnetic susceptibility data show the contributions from both Pauli and Curie spins, with the size of the Pauli term depending strongly on the doping level. Proton and fluorine NMR relaxation rates have been studied as a function of temperature (3-300 K) and field (for protons at 0.9, 9.0, 16.4, and 23.4 T, and for fluorine at 9.0 T). The temperature dependence of T-1 is classified into three regimes: (a) For T < (g mu(B) B/2k(B)), the relaxation mechanism follows a modified Korringa relation due to electron-electron interactions and disorder. H-1-T-1 is due to the electron-nuclear dipolar interaction in addition to the contact term. (b) For the intermediate temperature range (g mu(B) B/2k(B)) < T < T-BPP (the temperature where the contribution from the reorientation motion to the T-1 is insignificant) the relaxation mechanism is via spin diffusion to the paramagnetic centers. (c) In the high-temperature regime and at low Larmor frequency the relaxation follows the modified Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound model. T-1 data analysis has been carried out in light of these models depending upon the temperature and frequency range of study. Fluorine relaxation data have been analyzed and attributed to the PF6 reorientation. The cross relaxation among the H-1 and F-19 nuclei has been observed in the entire temperature range suggesting the role of magnetic dipolar interaction modulated by the reorientation of the symmetric molecular subgroups. The data analysis shows that the enhancement in the Korringa ratio is greater in a less conducting sample. Intra-and interchain hopping of charge carriers is found to be a dominant relaxation mechanism at low temperature. Frequency dependence of T-1(-1) on temperature shows that at low temperature T < (g mu(B) B/2k(B))] the system shows three dimensions and changes to quasi one dimension at high temperature. Moreover, a good correlation between electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, and NMR T-1 data has been observed.

Polymorphism in the orcinol: 4,4'-bipyridine cocrystal system is analyzed in terms of a robust convergent modular phenol...pyridine supramolecular synthon. Employing the Synthon Based Fragments Approach (SBFA) to transfer the multipole charge density parameters, it is demonstrated that the crystal landscape can be quantified in terms of intermolecular interaction energies in the five crystal forms so far isolated in this complex system. There are five crystal forms. The first has an open, divergent O-H...N based structure with alternating orcinol and bipyridine molecules. The other four polymorphs have different three-dimensional packing but all of them are similar at an interaction level, and are based on a modular O-H...N mediated supramolecular synthon that consists of two orcinol and two bipyridine molecules in a closed, convergent structure. The SBFA method, which depends on the modularity of synthons, provides good agreement between experiment and theory because it takes into account the supramolecular contribution to charge density. The existence of five crystal forms in this system shows that polymorphism in cocrystals need not be considered to be an unusual phenomenon. Studies of the crystal landscape could lead to an understanding of the kinetic pathways that control the crystallization processes, in other words the valleys in the landscape. These pathways are traditionally not considered in exercises pertaining to computational crystal structure prediction, which rather monitors the thermodynamics of the various stable forms in the system, in other words the peaks in the landscape.

This paper presents the results of the laboratory model tests and the numerical studies conducted on small diameter PVC pipes, buried in geocell reinforced sand beds. The aim of the study was to evaluate the suitability of the geocell reinforcement in protecting the underground utilities and buried pipelines. In addition to geocells, the efficacy of only geogrid and geocell with additional basal geogrid cases were also studied. A PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) pipe with external diameter 75 mm and thickness 1.4 mm was used in the experiments. The vehicle tire contact pressure was simulated by applying the pressure on the top of the bed with the help of a steel plate. Results suggest that the use of geocells with additional basal geogrid considerably reduces the deformation of the pipe as compared to other types of reinforcements. Further, the depth of placement of pipe was also varied between 1B to 2B (B is the width of loading plate) below the plate in the presence of geocell with additional basal geogrid. More than 50% reduction in the pressure and more than 40% reduction in the strain values were observed in the presence of reinforcements at different depths as compared to the unreinforced beds. Conversely, the performance of the subgrade soil was also found to be marginally influenced by the position of the pipe, even in the presence of the relatively stiff reinforcement system. Further, experimental results were validated with 3-dimensional numerical studies using FLAC(3D) (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3D). A good agreement in the measured pipe stain values were observed between the experimental and numerical studies. Numerical studies revealed that the geocells distribute the stresses in the lateral direction and thus reduce the pressure on the pipe. In addition, the results of the 1-g model tests were scaled up to the prototype case of the shallow buried pipeline below the pavement using the appropriate scaling laws. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanohoms (SWNH) and SWNH plus few-layer graphene (EG)-reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix composites have been measured using the nanoindentation technique. The elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H) of PVA were found to improve by similar to 315% and similar to 135%, respectively, upon the addition of just 0.4 wt % SWNH. These properties were found to be comparable to those obtained upon the addition of 0.2 wt % single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) to PVA. Furthermore, upon binary addition of 0.2 wt % EG and 0.4 wt % SWNH to PVA, benefits in the form of similar to 400% and similar to 330% synergy in E and H, respectively, were observed, along with an increased resistance to viscoelastic deformation. The reasons for these improvements are discussed in terms of the dimensionality of nanocarbon, the effectiveness of nanocarbon and polymer matrix interaction, and the influence of nanocarbon on the degree of crystallinity of the polymer. The results from SWNH reinforcement in this study demonstrate the scope for a novel and, in contrast to SWNT composites, a commercially feasible opportunity for strengthening polymer matrices.

A new electrochemical sensing device was constructed for determination of pesticides. In this report, acetylcholinesterase was bioconjugated onto hybrid nanocomposite, i.e. iron oxide nanoparticles and poly(indole-5-carboxylic acid) (Fe(3)O(4)NPs/Pin5COOH) was deposited electrochemically on glassy carbon electrode. Fe(3)O(4)NPs was showed as an amplified sensing interface at lower voltage which makes the sensor more sensitive and specific. The enzyme inhibition by pesticides was detected within concentrations ranges between 0.1-60 and 1.5-70 nM for malathion and chlorpyrifos, respectively, under optimal experimental conditions (sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C). Biosensor determined the pesticides level in water samples (spiked) with satisfactory accuracy (96%-100%). Sensor showed good storage stability and retained 50% of its initial activity within 70 days at 4 degrees C.

Graphene was produced by electrochemical exfoliation of a used battery electrode. Aqueous solutions of cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulphate), and nonionic (poly vinyl pyrrolidone) surfactants, along with NaCl and combinations of these surfactants with NaCl, were used as the electrolyte. The following observations were made: (I) up to several micrometer sized graphene sheets were produced, (II) the addition of NaCl into the electrolytes significantly enhanced the yield of the exfoliated graphene, (III) the type of surfactant affected the defect density of the exfoliated product, and (IV) electrochemical impedance spectroscopy provided insight into the reason for the changes in the defect density ratio between the graphene samples.
