The interdiffusion coefficient in Ni(Mo) solid solution, impurity diffusion of Mo in Ni, average interdiffusion coefficient of the NiMo-sigma phase and activation energies for diffusion in solid solution and in the sigma phase of the Ni-Mo binary system are evaluated through the diffusion couple approach. These results are utilized to identify the possible diffusion mechanism. Low activation energy in the sigma phase indicates a grain-boundary-controlled diffusion process. Transparent SrO-2B(2)O(3) (SBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies carried out on the as-quenched glasses confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The thermal parameters were evaluated for the as-quenched glass-plates using non-isothermal DTA experiments. The average values of the activation energies for the glass transition and crystallization of these glasses were 800 +/- 10 kJ/mol and 298 +/- 10 kJ/mol respectively. The values of the kinetic parameters that were obtained by different non-isothermal techniques were in close agreement.

Enthused by the fascinating properties of graphene, we have prepared graphene analogues of BN by a chemical method with a control on the number of layers. The method involves the reaction of boric acid with urea, wherein the relative proportions of the two have been varied over a wide range. Synthesis with a high proportion of urea yields a product with a majority of 1-4 layers. The surface area of BN increases progressively with the decreasing number of layers, and the high surface area BN exhibits high CO, adsorption, but negligible H, adsorption. Few-layer BN has been solubilized by interaction with Lewis bases. We have used first-principles simulations to determine structure, phonon dispersion, and elastic properties of BN with planar honeycomb lattice-based n-layer forms. We find that the mechanical stability of BN with respect to out-of-plane deformation is quite different from that of graphene, as evident in the dispersion of their flexural modes. BN is softer than graphene and exhibits signatures of long-range ionic interactions in its optical phonons. Finally, structures with different stacking sequences of BN have comparable energies, suggesting relative abundance of slip faults, stacking faults, and structural inhomogeneities in multilayer BN.

We carry out systematic and high-resolution studies of dynamo action in a shell model for magnetohydro-dynamic (MHD) turbulence over wide ranges of the magnetic Prandtl number Pr-M and the magnetic Reynolds number Re-M. Our study suggests that it is natural to think of dynamo onset as a nonequilibrium first-order phase transition between two different turbulent, but statistically steady, states. The ratio of the magnetic and kinetic energies is a convenient order parameter for this transition. By using this order parameter, we obtain the stability diagram (or nonequilibrium phase diagram) for dynamo formation in our MHD shell model in the (Pr-M(-1), Re-M) plane. The dynamo boundary, which separates dynamo and no-dynamo regions, appears to have a fractal character. We obtain a hysteretic behavior of the order parameter across this boundary and suggestions of nucleation-type phenomena.

Experimental charge density distributions in two known conformational polymorphs (orange and yellow) of coumarin 314 dye are analyzed based on multipole modeling of X-ray diffraction data collected at 100 K. The experimental results are compared with the charge densities derived from multipole modeling of theoretical structure factors obtained from periodic quantum calculation with density functional theory (DFT) method and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The presence of disorder at the carbonyl oxygen atom of ethoxycarbonyl group in the yellow form, which was not identified earlier, is addressed here. The investigationof intermolecular interactions, based on Hirshfeld surface analysis and topological properties via quantum theory of atoms in molecule and total electrostatic interaction energies, revealed significant differences between the polymorphs. The differences of electrostatic nature in these two polymorphic forms were unveiled via construction of three-dimensional deformation electrostatic potential maps plotted over the molecular surfaces. The lattice energies evaluated from ab initio calculations on the two polymorphic forms indicate that the yellow form is likely to be the most favorable thermodynamically. The dipole moments derived from experimental and theoretical charge densities and also from Lorentz tensor approach are compared with the single-molecule dipole moments. In each case, the differences of dipole moments between the polymorphs are identified.

La0.5Li0.5TiO3 perovskite was synthesized by various wet chemical methods. By adopting low temperature methods of preparation lithium loss from the material is prevented. La0.5Li0.5TiO3 (LLTO) was formed with cubic symmetry at 1473 K. LLTO was formed at relatively lower temperature by using hydrothermal preparation method. PVA gel-decomposition route yield tetragonal LLTO on annealing the dried gel at 1473 K. By using gel-carbonate route LiTi2O4 minor phase was found to remain even after heat-treatment at 1473 K. The hydroxylation of LLTO was done in deionized water as well as in dilute acetic acid medium. By hydroxylation process incorporation of hydroxyls and leaching out of Li+ was observed from the material. The Li+ concentration of these compositions was examined by AAS. The electrical conductivities of these compositions were measured by dc and ac impedance techniques at elevated temperatures. The activation energies of electrical conduction for these compositions were estimated from the experimental results. The measured activation energy of Li+ conduction is 0.34 eV. Unhydroxylated samples exhibit only Li+ conduction, whereas, the hydroxylated LLTO show proton conductivity at 298-550 K in addition to Li+ conductivity. The effect of Zr or Ce substitution in place of Ti were attempted. La0.5Li0.5ZrO3 Perovskite was not formed; instead pyrochlore phase (La2Zr2O7) along with monoclinic ZrO2 phases was observed above 1173 K; below 1173 K cubic ZrO2 is stable. (La0.5Li0.5)(2)CeO4 solid solution was formed in the case of Ce substitution at Ti sublattice on heat-treatment up to 1673 K. (c) 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

Coating of azobenzene chromophore with multivalent sugar ligands has been accomplished. Such sugar coating allows the study of the isomerization properties of this chromophore in aqueous solutions. The predominantly cis-isomer-containing photostationary state (PS) mixture of these azobenzene derivatives is found to be stable for hours. The rate constants for their isomerization, as well as the Arrhenius activation energies, are determined experimentally. An assessment of the lectin binding properties of the lactoside bearing isomeric azobenzene derivatives, by isothermal calorimetric methods, reveals the existence of an unusual cooperativity in their binding to lectin peanut agglutinin. Thermodynamic parameters evaluated for the trans and the PS mixture are discussed, in detail, for the lactoside bearing bivalent azobenzene derivative.

The binding of Artocarpus integrifolia lectin (jacalin) to 4-methylumbelliferyl (Meumb)-glycosides, Gal alpha Meumb, Gal beta Meumb, GalNAc alpha Meumb, GalNAc beta-Meumb, and Gal beta 3GalNAc beta Meumb was examined by extrinsic fluorescence quenching titration and stopped flow spectrofluorimetry. The binding was characterized by 100% quenching of fluorescence of Meumb-glycosides. Their association constants range from 2.0 x 10(4) to 1.58 x 10(6) M-1 at 15 degrees C. Entropic contribution is the major stabilizing force for avid binding of Meumb-glycosides indicating the existence of a hydrophobic site that is complementary to their methylumbelliferyl group. The second order association rate constants for interaction of these sugars with lectin at 15 degrees C vary from 8.8 x 10(5) to 3.24 x 10(6) M-1 S-1, at pH 7.2. The first order dissociation rate constants range from 2.30 to 43.0 S-1 at 15 degrees C. Despite the differences in their association rate constants, the overall values of association constants for these saccharides are determined by their dissociation rate constants. The second order rate constant for the association of Meumb-glycosides follows a pattern consistent with the magnitude of the activation energies involved therin. Activation parameters for association of all ligands illustrate that the origin of the barrier between binding of jacalin to Meumb-glycosides is entropic, and the enthalpic contribution is small. A correlation between these parameters and the structure of the ligands on the association rates underscores the importance of steric factors in determining protein saccharide recognitions.

A study has been made of the problem of steady, one-dimensional, laminar flame propagation in premixed gases, with the Lewis number differing from (and equal to) unity. Analytical solutions, using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, have been obtained for large activation energies. Numerical solutions have been obtained for a wide range of the reduced activation temperature parameter (n {geometrically equal to} E/RTb), and the Lewis number δ. The studies reveal that the flame speed eigenvalue is linear in Lewis number for first order and quadratic in Lewis number for second order reactions. For a quick determination of flame speeds, with reasonable accuracy, a simple rule, expressing the flame speed eigenvalue as a function of the Lewis number and the centroid of the reaction rate function, is proposed. Comparisons have been made with some of the earlier works, for both first and second order reactions.

Background: Thermophilic proteins sustain themselves and function at higher temperatures. Despite their structural and functional similarities with their mesophilic homologues, they show enhanced stability. Various comparative studies at genomic, protein sequence and structure levels, and experimental works highlight the different factors and dominant interacting forces contributing to this increased stability. Methods: In this comparative structure based study, we have used interaction energies between amino acids, to generate structure networks called as Protein Energy Networks (PENs). These PENs are used to compute network, sub-graph, and node specific parameters. These parameters are then compared between the thermophile-mesophile homologues. Results: The results show an increased number of clusters and low energy cliques in thermophiles as the main contributing factors for their enhanced stability. Further more, we see an increase in the number of hubs in thermophiles. We also observe no community of electrostatic cliques forming in PENs. Conclusion: In this study we were able to take an energy based network approach, to identify the factors responsible for enhanced stability of thermophiles, by comparative analysis. We were able to point out that the sub-graph parameters are the prominent contributing factors. The thermophiles have a better-packed hydrophobic core. We have also discussed how thermophiles, although increasing stability through higher connectivity retains conformational flexibility, from a cliques and communities perspective.

The favoured conformations of the prolyl residue have been obtained by calculating their potential energies arising from bond-angle strain, torsion-angle strain, non-bonded and electrostatic interatomic energies. In addition to the five membered ring, the peptide unit at the amino end (with ω = 180°) and the C′ atom at the carboxyl end have been taken into account. It is found that there are two local minima in the configurational space of the parameters defining the conformation, as is actually observed-one (denoted by B) with Cγ displaced on the same side as C′, which is lower in energy than the other (denoted by A) with Cγ displaced on the opposite side of C′. The other four atoms Cδ, N, Cα, Cβ are nearly in a plane. The conformations of minimum energy (for both A and B) have bond angles very close to the mean observed values while the torsion angles are well within the range observed in various structures for each type. Taking into account the fact that the influence of neighbouring molecules in a crystal structure may make the conformation of a molecule different from the minimal one, the ranges of the conformational parameters for which the energy is within 0.6 kcal/mole above the minimum value (called the "most probable range") and within 1.2 kcal/mole (called the "probable range") have been determined. The ranges thus obtained, agree well with observation, and most of the observed data lie within the most probable ranges, although differing appreciably from the conformation of minimum energy. The study has been extended, in a limited way, to the conformation of the ring in the amino acid proline. Since the nitrogen is tetrahedral in this (as contrasted with being planar in the prolyl residue), it is found that any one of the five atoms can be out of plane (either way), with the other four lying nearly in a plane. These correspond to low energy conformations (up to 1.2 kcal/mole above the minimum). One such example, in which the Cα atom is out of plane is known for dl-proline · HCl. It is also shown that in these calculations energies due to bond length distortions can be neglected to a good degree of approximation, provided the 'best' values of the bond lengths for the particular compound are used in the theoretical calculations.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. The addition reaction of alcohols to substituted phenylisothiocyanates is found to be a second-order reaction. The reaction is catalysed by triethylamine. First-order rate constants of the addition reaction have been determined in excess of ethanol, for a number of substituted phenylisothiocyanates and the rate data give a satisfactory linear correlation with Hammett σ constants of groups. While the energies of activation vary randomly with substitution, the entropies of activation bear a linear relationship to the energies of activation. Infra-red spectra indicate that the thiourethanes which are the products of the addition reaction exist in the thioamide form. The most prominent resonance form which can satisfactorily explain both the kinetic and infrared data, has been suggested.

The influence of 0.03 and 0.08 at. % Ag additions on the clustering of Zn atoms in an Al-4.4 at. % Zn alloy has been studied by resistometry. The effect of quenching and ageing temperatures shows that the ageing-ratio method of calculating the vacancy-solute atom binding energy is not applicable to these alloys. Zone-formation in Al-Zn is unaffected by Ag additions, but the zone-reversion process seems to be influenced. Apparent vacancy-formation energies in the binary and ternary alloys have been used to evaluate the v-Ag atom binding energy as 0.21 eV. It is proposed that, Ag and Zn being similar in size, the relative vacancy binding results from valency effects, and that in Al-Zn-Ag alloys clusters of Zn and Ag may form simultaneously, unaffected by the presence of each other. © 1970 Chapman and Hall Ltd.
