A common and practical paradigm in cooperative communications is the use of a dynamically selected 'best' relay to decode and forward information from a source to a destination. Such a system consists of two core phases: a relay selection phase, in which the system expends resources to select the best relay, and a data transmission phase, in which it uses the selected relay to forward data to the destination. In this paper, we study and optimize the trade-off between the selection and data transmission phase durations. We derive closed-form expressions for the overall throughput of a non-adaptive system that includes the selection phase overhead, and then optimize the selection and data transmission phase durations. Corresponding results are also derived for an adaptive system in which the relays can vary their transmission rates. Our results show that the optimal selection phase overhead can be significant even for fast selection algorithms. Furthermore, the optimal selection phase duration depends on the number of relays and whether adaptation is used.

Density measurements on large single-crystal specimens of La2NiO4+δ and Pr2NiO4+δ show that oxygen nonstoichiometry arises from the presence of excess lattice oxygen. X-ray photoelectron spectra as well as X-ray absorption edge studies provide no evidence for the existence of Ni3+ in these oxygen-excess nickelates under the conditions of the measurements. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed a novel type of exsolution process of the stoichiometric phase out of nonstoichiometric La2NiO4 during heating in CO2 at 870 K for 3 h. An interpretation of the results in terms of the existence of peroxide species within the conducting layers is proposed.

Extraction of formant information from linear-prediction phase spectra is proposed. It is shown that the derivative of phase spectrum gives reliable formant information. Since the phase spectra for several resonators in cascade are additive, the resonance peaks are additive in the derivative of the phase spectrum unlike in the magnitude spectrum and hence the problem of identifying merged peaks is very easily solved by this method. Application of the method is illustrated through examples of linear-prediction spectra obtained for simulated models and for actural speech segments.

The 31P nmr spectra of 2,4- and 2,6-diamino-derivatives of octachlorocyclotetraphosphazatetraene, N4P4Cl6(NR1R2)2 (R1 = H, R2 = But; R1 = H, R2 = CH2Ph; R1 = Me, R2 = Ph), have been measured. The 2,4- and 2,6-isomers were analysed as AA'BB' and A2B2 spin systems respectively. In the 2,4-isomers the spin-spin couplings 2J(PNP) and 4J(PNPNP) were of opposite sign.

The proton-decoupled 13C NMR spectra of mixtures of liquid crystals with opposite diamagnetic anisotropies have been studied in the natural abundance of 13C. A new method to assign the spectral lines to specific carbons in the liquid crystalline phase has been developed. For this purpose, the assignments of lines in the isotropic media are required, and they were obtained from two-dimensional hetero-COSY experiments. From the spectra in the critical mixtures where both the orientations of the liquid crystal directors, with the alignments along and perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, coexist, the 13C chemical-shift anisotropies have been determined, assuming uniaxial symmetry.

Body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) ZnS nanocrystals have been synthesized, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, by using the chemical coprecipitation method at higher synthesis temperatures of 65 and 95 degrees C. It is confirmed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies that in the high-temperature-synthesized samples, cubic and BCT phases coexist, in contrast to the room-temperature-synthesized sample, which consists of only cubic phase with sizes of the particles lying between 2 and 3 nm. The sizes of BCT phase nanocrystals are bigger than those of cubic phase of ZnS. The presence of BCT phase of ZnS in the samples is increased from 40 to 90% when the temperature of synthesis is increased from 65 to 95 degrees C. The nanocrystalline nature and UV-Vis absorption characteristics of the prepared samples have been studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a UV-Visible pectrophotometer, respectively. The room-temperature-synthesized ZnS sample shows photoluminescence (PL) emission in the blue region with multiple peaks, whereas the high-temperature-synthesized samples show PL emissions in the visible region. The Gaussian fittings of the measured PL spectra shows that three PL peaks at 429, 477, and 525 nm are appeared in the 65 degrees C sample and two peaks at 491 and 540 nm appear in the 95 degrees C sample with the enhanced PL intensity of the green peak at 540 nm. A common and practical paradigm in cooperative communication systems is the use of a dynamically selected `best' relay to decode and forward information from a source to a destination. Such systems use two phases - a relay selection phase, in which the system uses transmission time and energy to select the best relay, and a data transmission phase, in which it uses the spatial diversity benefits of selection to transmit data. In this paper, we derive closed-form expressions for the overall throughput and energy consumption, and study the time and energy trade-off between the selection and data transmission phases. To this end, we analyze a baseline non-adaptive system and several adaptive systems that adapt the selection phase, relay transmission power, or transmission time. Our results show that while selection yields significant benefits, the selection phase's time and energy overhead can be significant. In fact, at the optimal point, the selection can be far from perfect, and depends on the number of relays and the mode of adaptation. The results also provide guidelines about the optimal system operating point for different modes of adaptation. The analysis also sheds new insights on the fast splitting-based algorithm considered in this paper for relay selection.

The infrared spectra of N-methylthiourea (NMTU) and its N-deuterated and S-methylated species were measured. Assignment of the infrared and Raman spectra of NMTU has been accomplished by correlation with thiourea and by use of infrared band shifts on N-deuteration as well as S-methylation. Normal coordinate analysis was performed for all the fundamentals of NMTU and NMTU-d3, the assignments obtained from the force field calculations being discussed in relation to those in other related thioureas and thioamides. The potential barriers to the internal rotations for the NH2, CH3, and CN groups were estimated from the force constants.

Infrared spectra of imidazolidine-2-thione (N,N?-ethylenethiourea, ETU) and its N,N?-deuterated (ETU-d2) and S-methylthiouronium iodides have been recorded from 4000 to 30 cm?1. Normal coordinate analyses of ETU and ETU-d2 have been made for all the fundamental frequencies, employing a Urey-Bradley potential function supplemented with valence type constants for the out of plane modes of the planar skeleton. Raman frequencies of ETU from literature have been utilised. The results of the vibrational analyses are discussed in relation to the group frequencies in structurally related molecules and frequency shifts on deuteration and S-methylation. The normal coordinate treatment is also performed for the planar vibrations of imidazolidine-2-selenone (N,N?-ethyleneselenourea, ESU) to propose assignments for ESU and so also to support the assignments of ETU.
