An experimental flow loop with He II flow driven by fountain effect pumps (FEPs) is studied with respect to operation at different flow impedances and with thermal loads applied at different positions. The measured values of temperature, flow rate and pressure drop are compared with calculations resulting from a simplified model which assumes ideal performance of the porous plug and of the heat exchangers and which does not take into account Gorter-Mellink (GM) conduction. The main features of the loop are shown to be well described by this model. Refined calculations with a more complex model, including GM conduction of the He II, are only required for predicting the temperature distribution in some discrete regions of the loop.

Important issues of water and thermal history affecting ion transport in a representative plastic crystalline lithium salt electrolyte: succinonitrile (SN)-lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) are discussed here. Ionic conductivity of electrolytes with high lithium salt amounts (similar to 1 M) in SN at a particular temperature is known to be influenced both by the trans-gauche isomerism and ion association (solvation), the two most important intrinsic parameters of the plastic solvent. In the present study both water and thermal history influence SN and result in enhancement of ionic conductivity of 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte. Systematic observations reveal that the presence of water in varying amounts promote ion-pair dissociation in the electrolyte. While trace amounts (approximate to 1-15 ppm) do not affect the trans-gauche isomerism of SN, the presence of water in large amounts (approximate to 5500 ppm) submerges the plasticity of SN. Subjugating the electrolyte to different thermal protocol resulted in enhancement of trans concentration only. This is an interesting observation as it demonstrates a simple and effective procedure involving utilization of an optimized set of external parameters to decouple solvation from trans-gauche isomerism. Observations from the ionic conductivity of various samples were accounted by changes in signature isomer and ion-association bands in the mid-IR regime and also from plastic to normal crystal transition temperature peak obtained from thermal studies. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT), EC 2.1.2.1, exhibits broad substrate and reaction specificity. In addition to cleaving many 3-hydroxyamino acids to glycine and an aldehyde, the enzyme also catalyzed the decarboxylation, transamination and racemization of several substrate analogues of amino acids. To elucidate the mechanism of interaction of substrates, especially L-serine with the enzyme, a comparative study of interaction of L-serine with the enzyme from sheep liver and Escherichia coli, was carried out. The heat stability of both the enzymes was enhanced in the presence of serine, although to different extents. Thermal denaturation monitored by spectral changes indicated an alteration in the apparent T, of sheep liver and E. coli SHMTs from 55 +/- 1 degrees C to 72 +/- 3 degrees C at 40 mM serine and from 67 +/- 1 degrees C to 72 +/- 1 degrees C at 20 mM serine, respectively. Using stopped flow spectrophotometry k values of (49 +/- 5)(.)10(-3) s(-1) and (69 +/- 7).10(-3) s(-1) for sheep liver and E. coli enzymes were determined at 50 mM serine. The binding of serine monitored by intrinsic fluorescence and sedimentation velocity measurements indicated that there was no generalized change in the structure of both proteins. However, visible CD measurements indicated a change in the asymmetric environment of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate at the active site upon binding of serine to both the enzymes. The formation of an external aldimine was accompanied by a change in the secondary structure of the enzymes monitored by far UV-CD spectra. Titration microcalorimetric studies in the presence of serine (8 mM) also demonstrated a single class of binding and the conformational changes accompanying the binding of serine to the enzyme resulted in a more compact structure leading to increased thermal stability of the enzyme.

Silver selenide thin films of thickness between 80 nm and 160 nm were prepared by thermal evaporation technique at a high vacuum better than 2x10(-5)mbar on well cleaned glass substrates at a deposition rate of 0.2 nm/sec. Silver selenide thin films were polycrystalline with orthorhombic structure. Ellipsometric spectra of silver selenide thin films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 700 nm. Optical constants like refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, and optical band gap of silver selenide thin film have been calculated from the recorded spectra. The refractive index of silver selenide has been found to vary between 1.9 and 3.2 and the extinction coefficient varies from 0.5 to 1.6 with respect to their corresponding thickness of the films. Transmittance spectra of these films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 900 nm and its spectral data are analysed. The photoluminescence studies have been carried out on silver selenide thin films and the strong emission peak is found around 1.7 eV. The calculated optical band of thermally evaporated silver selenide thin films is found to be around 1.7 eV from their Ellipsometric, UV-Visible and Photoluminescence spectroscopic studies.

We report here the results of structural and vibrational studies on the solid solution Fe1 ? xNixPS3 (1 greater-or-equal, slanted x greater-or-equal, slanted 0) systems. From the structural analysis, we show that there is a lattice compaction as the composition x is varied from 0 to 1, the basic lattice symmetry being maintained. We find that the compaction is more in the basal plane. These subtle structural changes are also reflected in the vibrational bands. We observed splitting of certain bands due to these small changes in the lattice constants, which we explained as arising from a correlation splitting. These changes in the vibrational bands have also been seen on cooling where there is a preferential thermal compaction in the basal plane compared to that perpendicular to the plane.

This paper investigates the loss of high mass ions due to their initial thermal energy in ion trap mass analyzers. It provides an analytical expression for estimating the percentage loss of ions of a given mass at a particular temperature, in a trap operating under a predetermined set of conditions. The expression we developed can be used to study the loss of ions due to its initial thermal energy in traps which have nonlinear fields as well as those which have linear fields. The expression for the percentage of ions lost is shown to be a function of the temperature of the ensemble of ions, ion mass and ion escape velocity. An analytical expression for the escape velocity has also been derived in terms of the trapping field, drive frequency and ion mass. Because the trapping field is determined by trap design parameters and operating conditions, it has been possible to study the influence of these parameters on ion loss. The parameters investigated include ion temperature, magnitude of the initial potential applied to the ring electrode (which determines the low mass cut-off), trap size, dimensions of apertures in the endcap electrodes and RF drive frequency. Our studies demonstrate that ion loss due to initial thermal energy increases with increase in mass and that, in the traps investigated, ion escape occurs in the radial direction. Reduction in the loss of high mass ions is favoured by lower ion temperatures, increasing low mass cut-off, increasing trap size, and higher RF drive frequencies. However, dimensions of the apertures in the endcap electrodes do not influence ion loss in the range of aperture sizes considered. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. Transient thermal sensitivity is studied for systems that are subjected to conductive heat transfer within themselves and radiative heat transfer with the surrounding environment, including solar heat radiation, The battery in the Indian national communication satellite is one such system for which the studies are conducted with respect to panel conduction, conductance of insulating blanket, power dissipation within the battery, and absorptance and emittance of various elements, Comparison of sensitivities revealed that battery temperature is sensitive to its power dissipation during the beginning of life of the spacecraft, whereas toward the end of life of the spacecraft mission, the effect of absorptance of optical solar reflector is dominating, The influence of optical property values of the multilayer insulation blanket is almost negligible. Among the parameters studied in this analysis, the battery temperature is found to be mast sensitive to emittance of the optical solar reflector.

The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sintering, electrical conductivity and thermal expansion behaviour of combustion synthesised strontium substituted rare earth manganites with the general formula Ln(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (Ln = Pr, Nd and Sm; x = 0, 0.16 and 0.25) have been investigated as solid oxide fuel cell cathode materials. The combustion derived rare earth manganites have surface area in the range of 13-40 m(2)/g. Strontium substitution increases the electrical conductivity values in all the rare earth manganites. With the decreasing ionic radii of rare earth ions, the conductivity value decreases. Among the rare earth manganites studied, (Pr/Nd)(0.75)Sr0.25MnO3 show high electrical conductivity ( > 100 S/cm). The thermal expansion coefficients of Pr0.75Sr0.25MnO3 and Nd0.75Sr0.25MnO3 were found to be 10.2 x 10(-6) and 10.7 x 10(-6) K-1 respectively, which is very close to that of the electrolyte (YSZ) used in solid oxide fuel cells. Thermal and spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on a number of glasses with a wide range of compositions in the pseudoternary glass system, Li2SO4-Li2O-B2O3, to understand the role of sulfate ions in modifying the borate glass structure. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic results indicate that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses. There seems to be some evidence for the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(-1). These conclusions are supported by the observed behavior of glass transition temperatures and molar volumes. The possibility of formation of sulfoborate-type units is discussed from bonding and thermodynamic points of view.

Glasses of the composition 2TeO(2)-V2O5 were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The glass transition and crystallization parameters were evaluated under non-isothermal conditions using DSC. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the presence of partially oriented crystallites in the heat-treated glasses. Kauzmann temperature (lower bound for the kinetically observed glass transition) was deduced from the heating rate dependent glass transition and crystallization temperatures.
