The formation of anomalous indentations, with two opposite faces describing a pin-cushion effect and the other two faces normal, in long elongated grains of an extruded Mg-2Al-1Zn alloy is reported. Subsurface microstructural observations combined with Schmid factor calculations suggest that extension twinning accompanied by basal slip are the reasons for these. Johnson's expanding cavity model is invoked for further substantiation. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) technique has been used for direct deposition of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) from various cerium salt solutions as precursors. Solution precursors were injected into the hot zone of a plasma plume to deposit CNP coatings. A numerical study of the droplet injection model has been employed for microstructure development during SPPS. The decomposition of each precursor to cerium oxide was analyzed by thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis and validated by thermodynamic calculations. The presence of the cerium oxide phase in the coatings was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. Transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed nanocrystalline (grain size <14 nm) characteristic of the coatings. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicated the presence of a high concentration of Ce3+ (up to 0.32) in the coating prepared by SPPS. The processing and microstructure evolution of cerium oxide coatings with high nonstoichiometry are reported.

Local texture and microstructure was investigated to study the deformation mechanisms during equal channel angular extrusion of a high purity nickel single crystal of initial cube orientation. A detailed texture and microstructure analysis by various diffraction techniques revealed the complexity of the deformation patterns in different locations of the billet. A modeling approach, taking into account slip system activity, was used to interpret the development of this heterogeneous deformation.

An efficient algorithm within the finite deformation framework is developed for finite element implementation of a recently proposed isotropic, Mohr-Coulomb type material model, which captures the elastic-viscoplastic, pressure sensitive and plastically dilatant response of bulk metallic glasses. The constitutive equations are first reformulated and implemented using an implicit numerical integration procedure based on the backward Euler method. The resulting system of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson procedure. This is achieved by developing the principal space return mapping technique for the present model which involves simultaneous shearing and dilatation on multiple potential slip systems. The complete stress update algorithm is presented and the expressions for viscoplastic consistent tangent moduli are derived. The stress update scheme and the viscoplastic consistent tangent are implemented in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Standard. The accuracy and performance of the numerical implementation are verified by considering several benchmark examples, which includes a simulation of multiple shear bands in a 3D prismatic bar under uniaxial compression.

In the present investigation, unidirectional grinding marks were created on a set of steel plates. Sliding experiments were then conducted with the prepared steel plates using Al-Mg alloy pins and an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. The goals of the experiments were to ascertain the influence of inclination angle and grinding mark direction on friction and transfer layer formation during sliding contact. The inclination angle of the plate was held at 0.2 deg, 0.6 deg, 1 deg, 1.4 deg, 1.8 deg, 2.2 deg, and 2.6 deg in the tests. The pins were slid both perpendicular and parallel to the grinding marks direction. The experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions on each plate in an ambient environment. Results showed that the coefficient of friction and the formation of transfer layer depend on the grinding marks direction and inclination angle of the hard surfaces. For a given inclination angle, under both dry and lubricated conditions, the coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation were found to be greater when the pins slid perpendicular to the unidirectional grinding marks than when the pins slid parallel to the grinding marks. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed under lubricated conditions at the highest inclination angle for sliding perpendicular to the grinding marks direction. This phenomenon could be attributed to the extent of plane strain conditions taking place at the asperity level during sliding. DOI: 10.1115/1.4002604]

This paper describes the electrical contact resistance (ECR) measurements made on thin gold plated (gold plating of <= 0.5 mu m with a Ni underlayer of similar to 2 mu m) oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) Cu contacts in vacuum environment. ECR in gold plated OFHC Cu contacts is found to be slightly higher than that in bare OFHC Cu contacts. Even though gold is a softer material than copper, the relatively high ECR values observed in gold plated contacts are mainly due to the higher hardness and electrical resistivity of the underlying Ni layer. It is well known that ECR is directly related to plating factor, which increases with increasing coating thickness when the electrical resistivity of coating material is more than that of substrate. Surprisingly, in the present case it is found that the ECR decreases with increasing gold layer thickness on OFHC Cu substrate (gold has higher electrical resistivity than OFHC Cu). It is analytically demonstrated from the topography and microhardness measurements results that this peculiar behavior is associated with thin gold platings, where the changes in surface roughness and microhardness with increasing layer thickness overshadow the effect of plating factor on ECR.

Processing and instability maps using a dynamic materials model have been developed for stainless steel type AISI 316L in the temperature range 600-1250-degrees-C and strain rate range 0.001-100 s-1 with a view to optimising its hot workability. Stainless steel type AISI 316L undergoes dynamic recrystallisation, with a peak efficiency of 35% at 1250-degrees-C and 0.05 s-1, which are the optimum parameters for hot working this material. The material undergoes dynamic recovery at 900-degrees-C and 0.001 s-1. The increase in the dynamic recrystallisation and dynamic recovery temperatures in comparison with stainless steel type AISI 304L is attributed to the presence of a backstress caused by the molybdenum additions. These results are in general agreement with those reported elsewhere on stainless steel type 316 deformed in hot extrusion and hot torsion. At temperatures < 850-degrees-C and strain rates > 10 s-1, the material exhibits flow localisation owing to adiabatic shear band formation, whereas at higher temperatures (> 850-degrees-C) and strain rates (> 10 s-1) mechanical twinning and wavy slip bands are observed. The large-strain deformation of nanocrystalline nickel was investigated at room temperature and cryogenic (liquid N-2) temperature. Deformation mechanisms ranging from grain boundary sliding to slip, operate due to a wide distribution of grain sizes. These mechanisms leave their finger print in the deformation texture evolution during rolling of nanocrystalline nickel. The occurrence and severance of different mechanisms is understood by a thorough characterization of the deformed samples using X-ray diffraction, X-ray texture measurements, electron back-scattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Crystal plasticity-based viscoplastic self-consistent simulations were used to further substantiate the experimental observations. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of deformation behavior of nanocrystalline nickel, which is characterized by simultaneous operation of dislocation-dominated and grain boundary-mediated mechanisms, has been developed.

The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane is modified by the chemical etchant-route employing a sodium naphthalene charge-transfer complex followed by impregnation with Nafion ionomer or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) polymeric blend solutions by a dip-coating technique to form pore-filled-membrane electrolytes for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The number of coatings on the surface-modified PVDF membrane is varied between 5 and 15 and is found to be optimum at 10 layers both for Nafion and PVA-PSSA impregnations for effective DMFC performance. Hydrophilicity of the modified-membrane electrolytes is studied by determining average contact angle and surface-wetting energy. Morphology of the membranes is analyzed by a cross-sectional scanning electron microscope. The modified PVDF membrane electrolytes are characterized for their water-methanol sorption in conjunction with their mechanical properties, proton conductivity, and DMFC performance. Air permeability for the modified membranes is studied by a capillary-flow porometer. Methanol crossover flux across modified-PVDF-membrane electrolytes is studied by measuring the mass balance of methanol using a density meter. DMFCs employing membrane electrode assemblies with the modified PVDF membranes exhibit a peak power-density of 83 mW/cm(2) with Nafion impregnation and 59 mW/cm(2) for PVA-PSSA impregnation, respectively. Among the membranes studied here, stabilities of modified-pore-filled PVDF-Nafion and PVDF-PVA-PSSA membranes with 10-layers coat are promising for application in DMFCs. Texture development in commercially pure titanium during equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) through Routes A, Be and C has been studied up to three passes at 400 C. Textures were measured using X-ray diffraction, while the microstructural analyses were performed using electron back-scattered diffraction as well as transmission electron microscopy. Occurrences of dynamic restoration processes (recovery and recrystallization) were clearly noticed at all levels of deformations. Finally, the textures were simulated using a viscoplastic polycrystal self-consistent (VPSC) model. Simulations were performed incorporating basal, prismatic and pyramidal slip systems as well as tensile and compressive twinning. The simulated textures corroborate well with experimental textures in spite of the occurrence of dynamic restoration processes. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The paper describes an experimental and analytical study of the normal and scratch hardnesses of a model soft rigid-plastic solid. The material known as ‘Plasticine’, a mixture of dry particles and a mineral oil, has been deformed with a range of rigid conical indentors with included angles of between 30° and 170°. The sliding velocity dependence of the computed scratch hardness and friction has been examined in the velocity range 0.19 mm/s to 7.3 m/s. Data are also described for the time dependence of the normal hardness and also the estimated rate dependence of the intrinsic flow stress. The latter values were estimated from data obtained during the upsetting of right cylinders. Three major conclusions are drawn from these data and the associated analysis. (1) A first-order account of the scratching force may be provided by adopting a model which sums the computed plastic deformation and interfacial sliding contributions to the total sliding work. This is tantamount to the adoption of the two-term non-interacting model of friction. (2) For this system during sliding, at high sliding velocities at least, the interface shear stress which defines the boundary condition is not directly related to the bulk shear stress. The interface rheological characteristics indicate an appreciable dependence on the imposed strain or strain rate. In particular, the relative contributions of the slip and stick boundary conditions appear to be a function of the imposed sliding velocity. (3) The computed normal and scratch hardness values are not simply interrelated primarily because of the evolving boundary conditions which appear to exist in the scratching experiments.

MnO/C composite coatings were grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process on ceramic alumina in argon ambient. Characterization by various techniques confirms that these coatings are homogeneous composites comprising nanometer-sized MnO particles embedded in a matrix of nanometer-sized graphite. Components of the MnO/C composite coating crystalline disordered, but are electrically quite conductive. Resistance vs. temperature measurements show that coating resistance increases exponentially from a few hundred ohms at room temperature to a few megaohms at 30 K. Logarithmic plots of reduced activation energy vs. temperature show that the coating material undergoes a metal-insulator transition. The reduced activation energy exponent for the film under zero magnetic field was 2.1, which is unusually high, implying that conduction is suppressed at much faster rate than the Mott or the Efros-Shklovskii hopping mechanism. Magnetoconductance us. magnetic field plots obtained at various temperatures show a high magnetoconductance (similar to 28.8%) at 100 K, which is unusually large for a disordered system, wherein magnetoresistance is attributed typically to weak localization. A plausible explanation for the unusual behavior observed in the carbonaceous disordered composite material is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) responses of NIMONIC PE-16 for various prior microstructures and strain amplitudes have been evaluated and the fatigue behavior has been explained in terms of the operative deformation mechanisms. Total strain-controlled LCF tests were performed at 923 K on samples possessing three different prior microstructures: alloy A in solution-annealed condition (free of γ′ and carbides), alloy B with double aging treatment (spherical γ′ of 18-nm diameter and M23C6), and alloy C with another double aging treatment (γ′ of size 35 nm, MC and M23C6). All three microstructures exhibited an intial cyclic hardening followed by a period of gradual softening at 923 K. Coffin-Manson plots describing the plastic strain amplitudevs number of reversals to failure showed that alloy A had maximum fatigue life while C showed the least. Alloy B exhibited a two-slope behavior in the Coffin-Manson plot over the strain amplitudes investigated. This has been ascribed to the change in the degree of homogeneity of deformation at high and low strain amplitudes. Transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out to characterize the various deformation mechanisms and precipitation reactions occurring during fatigue testign. Fresh precipitation of fine γ′ was confirmed by the development of “mottled contrast” in alloy C. Evidence for the shearing of the ordered γ′ precipitates was revealed by the presence of superdislocations in alloy C. Repeated shearing during cyclic loading led to the reduction in the size of the γ′ and consequent softening. Coarser γ′ precipitates were associated with Orowan loops. The observed fatigue behavior has been rationalized based on the micromechanisms stated above and on the degree of homogenization of slip assessed by slipband spacing measurements on tested samples.

Strain-rate effects on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of a NIMONIC PE-16 superalloy have been evaluated in the temperature range of 523 to 923 K. Total-strain-controlled fatigue tests were per-formed at a strain amplitude of +/-0.6 pct on samples possessing two different prior microstructures: microstructure A, in the solution-annealed condition (free of gamma' and carbides); and microstructure B, in a double-aged condition with gamma' of 18-nm diameter and M23C6 carbides. The cyclic stress response behavior of the alloy was found to depend on the prior microstructure, testing temperature, and strain rate. A softening regime was found to be associated with shearing of ordered gamma' that were either formed during testing or present in the prior microstructure. Various manifestations of dynamic strain aging (DSA) included negative strain rate-stress response, serrations on the stress-strain hysteresis loops, and increased work-hardening rate. The calculated activation energy matched well with that for self-diffusion of Al and Ti in the matrix. Fatigue life increased with an increase in strain rate from 3 x 10(-5) to 3 x 10(-3) s-1, but decreased with further increases in strain rate. At 723 and 823 K and low strain rates, DSA influenced the deformation and fracture behavior of the alloy. Dynamic strain aging increased the strain localization in planar slip bands, and impingement of these bands caused internal grain-boundary cracks and reduced fatigue life. However, at 923 K and low strain rates, fatigue crack initiation and propagation were accelerated by high-temperature oxidation, and the reduced fatigue life was attributed to oxidation-fatigue interaction. Fatigue life was maximum at the intermediate strain rates, where strain localization was lower. Strain localization as a function of strain rate and temperature was quantified by optical and scanning electron microscopy and correlated with fatigue life.

Evolution of crystallographic texture during high strain rate deformation in FCC materials with different stacking fault energy (Ni, Cu, and Cu-10Zn alloy) has been studied. The texture evolved in FCC materials at these strain rates show little dependence on the Stacking Fault Energy and the amount of deformation. Copper shows an anomalous behavior that is attributed to the ease of cross slip and continuous Dynamic Recrystallization that are operative under the experimental conditions.
