The supramolecular structures of eight aryl protected ethyl-6-methyl-4-phenyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine- 5-carboxylates have been analyzed to determine the role of different functional groups on the molecular geometry, conformational characteristics and the packing of these molecules in the crystal lattice. Out of these the para fluoro substituted compound on the aryl ring exhibits conformational polymorphism, due to the different conformation of the ester moiety. This behaviour has been characterized using both powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry performed on both these polymorphs. The compounds pack via the cooperative interplay of strong N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C intermolecular dimers and chains forming a sheet like structure. In addition, weak C-H center dot center dot center dot O=C and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions impart additional stability to the crystal packing.

Cryogel matrices composed of different polymeric blends were synthesized, yielding a unique combination of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with the presence or absence of charged surface. Four such cryogel matrices composed of polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAAC), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were tested for growth of different hybridoma cell lines and production of antibody in static culture. All the matrices were capable for the adherence of hybridoma cell lines 6A4D7, B7B10, and H9E10 to the polymeric surfaces as well as for the efficient monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. PAAC proved to be relatively better in terms of both mAb production and cell growth. Further, PAAC cryogel was designed into three different formats, monolith, disks, and beads, and used as packing material for packed-bed bioreactor. Longterm cultivation of 6A4D7 cell line on PAAC cryogel scaffold in all the three formats could be successfully done for a period of 6 weeks under static conditions. Continuous packed-bed bioreactor was setup using 6A4D7 hybridoma cell line in the three reactor formats. The reactors ran continuously for a period of 60 days during which mAb production and metabolism of cells in the bioreactors were monitored periodically. The monolith bioreactor performed most efficiently over a period of 60 days and produced a total of 57.5 mg of antibody in the first 30 days (in 500 mL) with a highest concentration of 115 mu g mL(-1), which is fourfold higher than t-flask culture. The results demonstrate that appropriate chemistry and geometry of the bioreactor matrix for cell growth and immobilization can enhance the reactor productivity. This paper addresses the problem of determining an optimal (shortest) path in three dimensional space for a constant speed and turn-rate constrained aerial vehicle, that would enable the vehicle to converge to a rectilinear path, starting from any arbitrary initial position and orientation. Based on 3D geometry, we propose an optimal and also a suboptimal path planning approach. Unlike the existing numerical methods which are computationally intensive, this optimal geometrical method generates an optimal solution in lesser time. The suboptimal solution approach is comparatively more efficient and gives a solution that is very close to the optimal one. Due to its simplicity and low computational requirements this approach can be implemented on an aerial vehicle with constrained turn radius to reach a straight line with a prescribed orientation as required in several applications. But, if the distance between the initial point and the straight line to be followed along the vertical axis is high, then the generated path may not be flyable for an aerial vehicle with limited range of flight path angle and we resort to a numerical method for obtaining the optimal solution. The numerical method used here for simulation is based on multiple shooting and is found to be comparatively more efficient than other methods for solving such two point boundary value problem.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(N-N-N)(N-N)](NO3)(2) (1-4) of (4'-phenyl)-2,2': 6',2 `'-terpyridine (ph-tpy in 1 and 2) or (4'-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (py-tpy in 3 and 4) having N-N as 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 3) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 2 and 4) are prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of 1 has VO2+ group in VN5O coordination geometry. The terpyridine ligand coordinates in a meridional binding mode. The phen ligand displays a chelating mode of binding with an N-donor site trans to the vanadyl oxo group. The complexes show a d-d band in the range of 710-770 nm in aqueous DMF (4:1 v/v). The complexes exhibit an irreversible V-IV/V-III redox response near -1.0 V vs. SCE in aqueous DMF/0.1 M KCl. The complexes bind to CT DNA giving K-b values within 3.5 x 10(5) to 1.2 x 10(6) M-1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in dark. Complexes 2-4 show photonuclease activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot. Complex 4 shows DNA photocleavage activity at near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Complexes 2 and 4 show significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. Uptake of the complexes in HeLa cells, studied by fluorescence imaging, show predominantly cytosolic localization inside the cells.

Surface flashover characteristics of solid spacers in a rod-plane configuration have been investigated in SF6, at pressures to 400 kPa, for switching impulse voltages to determine the effect of spacer, spacer materials and polarity of applied impulses. The effect of spacer material on the flashover voltage is not significant. For negative polarity impulses, the influence of the spacer is also insignificant. But for positive polarity impulses, at pressures < 200 kPa, the spacer efficiency becomes > 1.0. On the other hand, at pressures > 200 kPa, the presence of spacer drastically reduces the flashover voltage of the system. At about atmospheric pressure also, the spacer efficiency in air has been found to be > 1.0, with the same electrode geometry.

Literature suggests that apart from a significant percentage of water loss from seepage, downward seepage from the channel causes an increase in the mobility of channel bed materials and thus changes the channel stability. Consequently, regime conditions (which provide the relationship among hydraulic parameters) should also be revised by incorporating downward seepage as an additional parameter. In the present work, regime conditions for the prediction of channel geometry in alluvial channels affected by downward seepage have been formulated on the basis of experimental observations. Detailed three-dimensional CFD simulations involving flow and combustion chemistry are used to study the effect of swirl induced by re-entrant piston bowl geometries on pollutant emissions from a single-cylinder diesel engine. The baseline engine configuration consists of a hemispherical piston bowl and an injector with finite sac volume. The first iteration involved using a torroidal, slightly re-entrant bowl geometry, and a sac-less injector. Pollutant emission measurements indicated a reduction in emissions with this modification. Simulations on both configurations were then conducted to understand the effect of the changes. The simulation results indicate that the selected piston bowl geometry could actually be reducing the in-cylinder swirl and turbulence and the emission reduction may be entirely due to the introduction of the sac-less injector. In-cylinder air motion was then studied in a number of combustion chamber geometries, and a geometry which produced the highest in-cylinder swirl and Turbulence Kinetic Energy (TKE) around the compression top dead centre (TDC) was identified. The optimal nature of this re-entrant piston bowl geometry is confirmed by detailed combustion simulations and emission predictions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Intramolecular gamma-hydrogen abstraction reactions were examined in pentane-2-one and 2-methyl-1-pentene in their lowest triplet states using the AM1 semi-empirical molecular orbital method with the complete geometry optimization in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock frame. The results reveal that the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group and the end carbon atom of the olefinic bond acquire high free valence and spin density indices in their respective lowest triplet states, leading to abstraction of hydrogen from the gamma-position relative to the carbonyl and olefinic bonds. The theoretical energy profiles fit with a polynomial and the probability of tunneling of hydrogen was estimated by the WKB (Wentzel, Kramer and Brillouin) method. The results, after thermal averaging of the rate constants, reveal that tunneling of hydrogen is significant at room temperature.

The results of an NMR study of the interaction of quinazoline with iodine in the nematic phase indicate the formation of at least two different types of charge-transfer complexes. Significant changes in the molecular geometry of the quinazoline moiety were observed as a result of complexation with iodine. Detailed information on the formation of the charge-transfer complexes was derived from the changes in the molecular structure, order parameters and chemical shifts as functions of iodine concentration. The observed changes in the order parameters are interpreted in terms of bond interaction tensors.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on rigid and flexible framework models of silicalite and a rigid framework model of the aluminophosphate VPI-5 for different sorbate diameters are reported. The sorbate-host interactions are modeled in terms of simple atom-atom Lennard-Jones interactions. The results suggest that the diffusion coefficient exhibits an anomaly as gamma approaches unity. The MD results confirm the existence of a linear regime for sorbate diameters significantly smaller than the channel diameter and an anomalous regime observed for sorbate diameters comparable to the channel diameter. The power spectra obtained by Fourier transformation of the velocity autocorrelation function indicate that there is an increase in the intensity of the low-frequency component for the velocity component parallel to the direction of motion for the sorbate diameter in the anomalous regime. The present results suggest that the diffusion anomaly is observed irrespective of (1) the geometry and topology of the pore structure and (2) the nature of the host material. The results are compared with the work of Derouane and co-workers, who have suggested the existence of ''floating molecules'' on the basis of earlier theoretical and computational approaches.

Following considerations of geometry and the similarity between chromate and carbonate groups in terms of size and charge, we have investigated the possibility of replacing the two-coordinate Cu-I in superconducting lead cuprates of the general formula Pb2Sr2(Ca, Y)CU3O8 by Cr. A high-resolution electron microscopy study coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis on small crystals of the title phases suggests that between 10 and 15% of the Cu-I can be replaced by Cr. While from the present structural study using HRTEM and Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder data we are unable to precisely obtain the oxidation state and oxygen coordination of Cr, we suggest in analogy with Cr substitution in other similar cuprates that in the title phases (CuO2)-O-I rods are partially replaced by tetrahedral CrO42- groups. Infrared spectroscopy supports the presence of CrO42- groups. The phases Pb1.75Sr2Ca0.2Y0.8O8+delta and Pb1.75Sr2Ca0.2Y0.8CCu2.85Cr0.15O8+delta are superconducting as-prepared, but the substitution of Cr for Cu-I results in a decrease of the Te as well as the superconducting volume fraction. The 1:1 and 1:2 cooper(II) complexes with the tridentate compound bis(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine (L(1)) and its benzimidazole (L(2)) and amine (L(3)) N-methyl-substituted derivatives have been prepared and their spectroscopic properties studied. While the 1:1 complexes are of the type CuLX(2) nH(2)O (X = C/O-4(-), NO3-, Cl- or Br-), the 1:2 complexes are of the type CuL(2) (ClO4)(2) nH(2)O (L = L(1) or L(3), n = 0-4). In all these complexes L acts as a tridentate ligand with the amine nitrogen and both the benzimidazole nitrogens co-ordinating to Cu-II. The complex [CuL(2)(1)][ClO4](2) 2H(2)O crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 9.828(2), b = 9.546(2) and c = 19.906(2) Angstrom and beta = 95.71(1)degrees, for Z = 2. The R value is 0.0635 for 2180 significant reflections. The copper(II) ion has an elongated octahedral geometry with four equatorial benzimidazole and two long-distance axial amine N donors. The Cu-N-bzim and Cu-N-amine distances are 2.011(4) and 2.597(6) Angstrom respectively. Factors favouring facial co-ordination to tridentate ligands are discussed. The 1:1 complexes involve meridonal co-ordination of the ligands, with square-based geometry as revealed by ligand-field and EPR spectral properties. The NMe substitution as in CuL(3)(ClO4)(2) confers low V ($) over tilde$$(max) and high E(1/2) for the cu(II)-Cu-I couple. Most of the 1:1 complexes are less reversible but exhibit E(1/2) values more positive than those of the corresponding 1:2 complexes.

The Norrish type II processes of methyl-2,2-dimethyl- cyclopropyl ketone, alpha-alkoxy acetones and alkyl pyruvates have been examined using the AM1 semi-empirical molecular orbital method with complete geometry optimization at the partial configuration interaction level in the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) frame. The results reveal that the methyl-substituted cyclopropyl ketone has a constrained geometry favourable for hydrogen abstraction from the gamma-position relative to the carbonyl group in the excited singlet state. The presence of the ether oxygen atom in the beta-position relative to the carbonyl group in alkoxy acetones and alkyl pyruvates leads to increased reactivity relative to alkyl monoketones and diketones respectively. The cyclization of 1:4 biradicals has been studied in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) frame, and the results reveal that the 1:4 biradical derived from alkoxy acetones readily cyclizes to form oxetanols. On the other hand, in the 1:4 biradicals derived from methyl-substituted cyclopropyl ketone, the three-membered ring breaks readily to form an enol intermediate. Delocalization of an odd electron in 1:4 biradicals derived from alkyl pyruvates is thought to make cyclization difficult.

We present photoluminescence and reflectance spectra of GaAs/Al-x Ga-1-x As quantum wells in a magnetic field for the Faraday geometry. The photoluminescence peaks recorded are among the most intense and narrow reported to date. This has allowed us to study the behavior of closely spaced bound exciton lines under a magnetic field. Several new features including magnetic field induced splitting of the bound exciton emission peaks are reported.

The ternary metal deoxyribonucleotide complex [Cu(bzim)(5?-dGMP)(H2O)3](bzim = benzimidazole, 5?-dGMP = 2?-deoxyguanosine 5?-monophosphate) has been prepared and the structure analysed by X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the space group P1 with a= 7.069(6), b= 13.959(10), c= 14.204(12)Å, ?= 75.12(6), ?= 94.15(6), ?= 97.98(6)° and Z= 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures on the basis of 2813 observed [I[gt-or-equal] 3?(I)] reflections to final R and R? values of 0.050 and 0.052 respectively. There are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit and both copper(II) centres have square-pyramidal co-ordination geometry. An unusual feature of the structure is the co-ordination of the metal by N(7) of the base, in the presence of a ?-aromatic amine, bzim. The structure is stabilized by intermolecular basebzim stacking. The nucleotides of both the molecules have an anti conformation about the glycosyl bond, and a gauche-gauche conformation about the C(4?)C(5?) bond. A feature of particular interest is the unusual sugar conformation. The base furanose rings of the two nucleotide molecules adopt C(3?)-exo/C(2?)-endo pucker and C(3?)-exo pucker respectively.
