The effect of gas molecule adsorption is investigated on the density of states of (9,0) zigzag boron nitride nanotube within a random tight-binding Hamiltonian model. The Green function approach and coherent potential approximation have been implemented. The results show that the adsorption of carbon dioxide gas molecules by boron atoms only leads to a donor type semiconductor while the adsorption by nitrogen atoms only leads to an acceptor. Since the gas molecules are adsorbed by both boron and nitrogen atoms, a reduction of the band gap is found. In all cases, increasing the gas concentration causes an increase in the height of the peaks in the band gap. This is due to an increasing charge carrier concentration induced by adsorbed gas molecules.

Nucleic acid interaction with nanoscale objects like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and dendrimers is of fundamental interest because of their potential application in CNT separation, gene therapy and antisense therapy. Combining nucleic acids with CNTs and dendrimers also opens the door towards controllable self-assembly to generate various supra-molecular and nano-structures with desired morphologies. The interaction between these nanoscale objects also serve as a model system for studying DNA compaction, which is a fundamental process in chromatin organization. By using fully atomistic simulations, here we report various aspects of the interactions and binding modes of DNA and small interfering RNA (siRNA) with CNTs, graphene and dendrimers. Our results give a microscopic picture and mechanism of the adsorption of single- and double-strand DNA (ssDNA and dsDNA) on CNT and graphene. The nucleic acid-CNT interaction is dominated by the dispersive van der Waals (vdW) interaction. In contrast, the complexation of DNA (both ssDNA and dsDNA) and siRNA with various generations of poly-amido-amine (PAMAM) dendrimers is governed by electrostatic interactions. Our results reveal that both the DNA and siRNA form stable complex with the PAMAM dendrimer at a physiological pH when the dendrimer is positively charged due to the protonation of the primary amines. The size and binding energy of the complex increase with increase in dendrimer generation. We also give a summary of the current status in these fields and discuss future prospects.

Polyaniline-CaTiO3 nanocomposites with their various weight percentages were prepared by chemical oxidative in situ polymerization technique. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The temperature-dependent dc conductivity of polyaniline-CaTiO3 nanocomposite was studied within the range of 40-200 degrees C and found that 50 wt% shows high conductivity compared to other composites. Humidity sensor properties of polyaniline-CaTiO3 nanocomposite show better sensing properties and exhibit good linearity in sensing response curve, which discuss the implications of distortions and nonstoichiometry on their physical properties. Among all composites, 50 wt% of polyaniline-CaTiO3 nanocomposites show high sensitivity up to similar to 90% and their response-recovery times are 500 and 453 s, respectively.

In this paper, we estimate the solution of the electromigration diffusion equation (EMDE) in isotopically pure and impure metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (SWCNTs) by considering self-heating. The EMDE for SWCNT has been solved not only by invoking the dependence of the electromigration flux on the usual applied static electric field across its two ends but also by considering a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity (κ) which results in a variable temperature distribution (T) along its length due to self-heating. By changing its length and isotopic impurity, we demonstrate that there occurs a significant deviation in the SWCNT electromigration performance. However, if κ is assumed to be temperature independent, the solution may lead to serious errors in performance estimation. We further exhibit a tradeoff between length and impurity effect on the performance toward electromigration. It is suggested that, to reduce the vacancy concentration in longer interconnects of few micrometers, one should opt for an isotopically impure SWCNT at the cost of lower κ, whereas for comparatively short interconnects, pure SWCNT should be used. This tradeoff presented here can be treated as a way for obtaining a fairly well estimation of the vacancy concentration and mean time to failure in the bundles of CNT-based interconnects. © 2012 IEEE.

We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) decorated with sugar functionalized poly (propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer is a very sensitive platform to quantitatively detect carbohydrate recognizing proteins, namely, lectins. The changes in electrical conductivity of SWNT in field effect transistor device due to carbohydrate-protein interactions form the basis of present study. The mannose sugar attached PETIM dendrimers undergo charge-transfer interactions with the SWNTs. The changes in the conductance of the dendritic sugar functionalized SWNT after addition of lectins in varying concentrations were found to follow the Langmuir type isotherm, giving the concanavalin A (Con A)-mannose affinity constant to be 8.5 x 10(6) M-1. The increase in the device conductance observed after adding 10 nM of Con A is same as after adding 20 mu M of a non-specific lectin peanut agglutinin, showing the high specificity of the Con A-mannose interactions. The specificity of sugar-lectin interactions was characterized further by observing significant shifts in Raman modes of the SWNTs. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) in bulk form offer outstanding structural and functional properties, and are shown to remain viscoelastic over a wide temperature range (77-1273 K) under inert conditions. We examine the quasi-static and dynamic compressive mechanical response of these cellular CNT materials in ambient air up to a temperature of 773 K. In uniaxial quasi-static compression, several displacement bursts are noted at large strains. These are results of the slippage and zipping of the CNT, and lead to significant mechanical energy absorption. Results of the dynamic mechanical analysis experiments show no degradation in storage modulus and loss coefficient for up to 20 h at 673 K. Hence, these stable cellular CNT structures can be utilized up to a maximum temperature of 673 K in air, which is much higher than the best polymers. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. The nucleation and growth of vanadium oxide nanotubes (VOx-NT) have been followed by a combination of numerous ex situ techniques. long the hydrothermal process. Intermediate solid phases extracted at different reaction times have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance, and V-K edge :X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. The supernatant vanadate solutions extracted during the hydrothermal treatment have been studied by liquid V-51 NMR and flame. spectroscopy. For short durations of the hydrothermal synthesis, the initial V2O5-surfactant intercalate. is progressively transformed into VOx-NT whose crystallization starts to be detected after a hydrothermal treatment of 24 h. Upon heating from 24 h to 7 days, VOx-NT are obtained in larger amount and with an improved crystallinity. The detection of soluble amines and cyclic metavanadate V4O12](4-) in the supernatant solution along the hydrothermal process suggests that VOx-NT result from a dissolution precipitation mechanism. Metavanadate species V4O12](4-) could behave as molecular precursors in the polymerization reactions leading to VOx-NT.

We employ nanoindentation coupled with electrical contact resistance measurements for simultaneous characterization of the electrical and mechanical behaviors of a cellular assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Experimental results reveal two different responses that correspond to relatively dense and porous regions of the cellular structure. Distinct nonlinear electron transport characteristics are observed, which mainly originate from diffusive conductance in the CNT structure. In the denser region, differential conductance shows asymmetric minima at lower bias, implying that conductivity mainly results from bulk tunneling. However, the porous regions show insignificant differential conduction as opposed to the denser region.

The polyaniline-PbO composites of various mass fractions were prepared by in situ polymerisation. The prepared samples were characterised by FTIR, and the dominant peaks confirmed the formation of polyaniline-PbO composites. The SEM study shows a granular agglomerated morphology, and increases with an increase in the lead oxide mass % in polyaniline. Direct current (DC) conductivity (sigma (DC)) was studied as a function of temperature (T). From these studies, it was found that conductivity increased at higher temperatures due to the polarons hopping from one localised state to another. DSC studies reveal, the decrease in peak temperature from 273A degrees C (pure PANI) to 169.2A degrees C, 193.5A degrees C, 218.4A degrees C, 235.2A degrees C, and 224.2A degrees C, respectively for the various mass fractions (10 %, 30 %, 20 %, 40 %, and 50 %) of polyaniline-PbO composites.

We report spontaneous translocation of small interfering RNA (siRNA) inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of various diameters and chirality using all atom molecular dynamics simulations with explicit solvent. We use umbrella sampling method to calculate the free energy landscape of the siRNA entry and translocation event. Free energy profiles show that siRNA gains free energy while translocating inside CNT, and barrier for siRNA exit from CNT ranges from 40 to 110 kcal/mol depending on CNT chirality and salt concentration. The translocation time tau decreases with the increase of CNT diameter with a critical diameter of 24 angstrom for the translocation. In contrast, double strand DNA of the same sequence does not translocate inside CNT due to large free energy barrier for the translocation. This study helps in understanding the nucleic acid transport through nanopores at microscopic level and may help designing carbon nanotube based sensor for siRNA. It is known that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess multifunctional characteristics, which are applicable for a wide variety of engineering applications. CNT is also recognized as a radiation sensitive material, for example for detecting infrared (IR) radiations. One of the direct implications of exposing CNTs to radiation is the photomechanical actuation and generation of a photovoltage/photocurrent. The present work focuses on coupling electromechanical and photomechanical characteristics to enhance the resulting induced-strain response in CNTs. We have demonstrated that after applying an electric field the induced strain in CNT sheet is enhanced to about similar to 2.18 times for the maximum applied electric field at 2 V as compared to the photo-actuation response alone. This enhancement of the strain at higher bias voltages (> 1 V) can be considered as a sum of individual contributions of the bias voltage and IR stimulus. However, at lower voltage (< 1 V) the enhancement in the resulting strain has been attributed to the associated electrostatic effects when CNTs are stimulated with IR radiation under external bias conditions. This report reveals that voltage bias or IR stimulus alone could not produce the observed strain in the CNT sheet under lower bias conditions.

We report on the monotonic increase and the oscillation of electrical conductance in multiwalled carbon nanotubes with compressive strain. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses confirm that the conductance variation with strain is because of the transition from sp(2) to configurations that are promoted by the interaction of walls in the nanotubes. The intrawall interaction is the reason for the monotonic increase in the conduction, while the oscillations are attributable to interwall interactions. This explains the observed electromechanical oscillation in multiwalled nanotubes and its absence in single-walled nanotubes, thereby resolving a long-standing debate on the interpretation of these results. Moreover, the current carrying capability of nanotubes can be enhanced significantly by controlling applied strains. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.110.095504

In this paper, we study the Fowler-Nordheim field emission (FNFE) from carbon nanotubes on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law by considering the fact that the intense electric field needed for FNFE changes the band structure in a fundamental way. It has been found that the field emitted current increases with increasing electric field in oscillatory manner due to the appearance of van Hove singularities and exhibits spikes for particular values of the electric field where the singularity occurs. The numerical values of the field emitted current in all the cases vary widely and the determined by the chiral indices and the diameter in the respective cases. The results of this paper find three applications in the fields of nanoscience and technology.
