The thermally evaporated amorphous Sb40Se20S40 thin film of 800 nm thickness was subjected to light exposure for photo induced studies. The as-prepared and illuminated thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The optical band gap was reduced due to photo induced effects along with the increase in disorder. These optical properties changes are due to the change of homopolar bond densities. The core level peak shifting in XPS spectra supports the optical changes happening in the film due to light exposure.

Reflectance change due to binding of molecules on thin film structures has been exploited for bio-molecular sensing by several groups due to its potential in the development of sensitive, low cost, easy to fabricate, large area sensors with high multiplexing capabilities. However, all of these sensing platforms have been developed using traditional semiconductor materials and processing techniques, which are expensive. This article presents a method to fabricate disposable thin film reflectance biosensors using polymers, such as polycarbonate, which are 2-3 orders of magnitude cheaper than conventional semiconductor and dielectric materials and can be processed by alternate low cost methods, leading to significant reduction in consumable costs associated with diagnostic biosensing. The demand for high power density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for diverse applications ranging from mobile electronics to electric vehicles have resulted in an upsurge in the development of nanostructured electrode materials worldwide. Graphite has been the anode of choice in commercial LiBs. Due to several detrimental electrochemical and environmental issues, efforts are now on to develop alternative non-carbonaceous anodes which are safe, nontoxic and cost effective and at the same time exhibit high lithium storage capacity and rate capability. Titania (TiO2) and tin (Sn) based systems have gained much attention as alternative anode materials. Nanostructuring of TiO2 and SnO2 have resulted in enhancement of structural stability and electrochemical performances. Additionally, electronic wiring of mesoporous materials using carbon also effectively enhanced electronic conductivity of mesoporous electrode materials. We discuss in this article the beneficial influence of structural spacers and electronic wiring in anatase titania (TiO2) and tin dioxide (SnO2).

Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films, one of the most suitable Chalcogenide alloys for Phase change Random Access Memory applications are studied for changes in sheet resistance, optical transmission, morphology and surface science by annealing at various transition temperatures. The crystallization leads to an increase of grain size and roughness in the films and the resistance changes to three orders of magnitude. Optical studies on GST films show distinct changes during phase transitions and the optical parameters are calculated. An increase of Tauc parameters B-1/2 indicates a reduction in disorder during phase transition. It is confirmed from XPS studies that Ge-Te, Sb-Te bonds are present in both amorphous and crystalline phases whereas Sb-Ge, Te-Te, Sb-Sb bonds are absent. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Film flows on inclined surfaces are often assumed to be of constant thickness, which ensures that the velocity profile is half-Poiseuille. It is shown here that by shallow water theory, only flows in a portion of Reynolds number-Froude number (Re-Fr) plane can asymptotically attain constant film thickness. In another portion on the plane, the constant thickness solution appears as an unstable fixed point, while in other regions the film thickness seems to asymptote to a positive slope. Our simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations confirm the predictions of shallow water theory at higher Froude numbers, but disagree with them at lower Froude numbers. We show that different regimes of film flow show completely different stability behaviour from that predicted earlier. Supercritical decelerating flows are shown to be always unstable, whereas accelerating flows become unstable below a certain Reynolds number for a given Froude number. Subcritical flows on the other hand are shown to be unstable above a certain Reynolds number. In some range of parameters, two solutions for the base flowexist, and the attached profile is found to be more stable. All flows except those with separation become more stable as they proceed downstream. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4758299]

We discuss the size-dependent density of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials keeping the recent experimental results in mind. The density is predicted to increase with decreasing size for nanoparticles but it can decrease with size for nanostructured materials that corroborates the experimental results reported in the literature. The solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method has been used for the synthesis of colloids of metal nanoparticles. It is a top-down approach involving condensation of metal atoms in low temperature solvent matrices in a SMAD reactor maintained at 77 K. Warming of the matrix results in a slurry of metal atoms that interact with one another to form particles that grow in size. The organic solvent solvates the particles and acts as a weak capping agent to halt/slow down the growth process to a certain extent. This as-prepared colloid consists of metal nanoparticles that are quite polydisperse. In a process termed as digestive ripening, addition of a capping agent to the as-prepared colloid which is polydisperse renders it highly monodisperse either under ambient or thermal conditions. In this, as yet not well-understood process, smaller particles grow and the larger ones diminish in size until the system attains uniformity in size and a dynamic equilibrium is established. Using the SMAD method in combination with digestive ripening process, highly monodisperse metal, core-shell, alloy, and composite nanoparticles have been synthesized. This article is a review of our contributions together with some literature reports on this methodology to realize various nanostructured materials.

Field emission of reduced graphene oxide coated on polystyrene film is studied in both parallel and perpendicular configurations. Low turn-on field of 0.6 V/lm and high emission current density of 200 mA/cm(2) are observed in perpendicular configuration (along the cross section), whereas a turn-on field of 6 V/lm and current density of 20 mu A/cm(2) are obtained in parallel configuration (top surface). The emission characteristics follow Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling and the values of enhancement factor estimated from FN plots are 5818 (perpendicular) and 741 (parallel). Furthermore, stability and repeatability of the field emission characteristics in perpendicular configuration are presented. ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTIONAL INORGANIC NANOSTRUCTURED OXIDES FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE AND SENSING. We demonstrate here certain examples of multifunctional nanostructured oxidematerials for biotechnological and environmental applications.Various in-house synthesized homogeneous nanostructured viz.mesoporous and nanotubes silica and titania have been employed for controlled drug delivery and electrochemical biosensing applications. Confinement of macromolecules such as proteins studied via electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic methods showed no detrimental effect on native protein structure and function, thus suggesting effective utility of oxide nanostructures as bio-encapsulators. Multi-functionalitywas demonstrated via employing similar nanostructures for sensing organic water pollutants e.g. textile dyes.

The role of Bi layer (thickness similar to 7 nm) on As2S3 film was extensively studied for different optical applications in which Bi (top layer) as active and diffusing layer and As2S3 as barrier (matrix) layer. Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. The decrease of optical band gap with the addition of Bi to As2S3 has been explained on the basis of density of states and the increase in disorder in the system. It was found that the efficient changes of optical parameters (transmission, optical band gap, refraction) could be realized due to the photo induced diffusion activated by the focused 532 nm laser irradiation and formation of different bonds. The diffusion of Bi into As2S3 matrix increases the optical band gap producing photo bleaching effect. The changes were characterised by different experimental techniques. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Nanostructured Pd-modified Ni/CeO2 catalyst was synthesized in a single step by solution combustion method and characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, TPR and BET surface analyzer techniques. The catalytic performance of this compound was investigated by performing the water gas shift (WGS) and catalytic hydrogen combustion (CHC) reaction. The present compound is highly active and selective (100%) toward H-2 production for the WGS reaction. A lack of CO methanation activity is an important finding of present study and this is attributed to the ionic substitution of Pd and Ni species in CeO2. The creation of oxide vacancies due to ionic substitution of aliovalent ions induces dissociation of H2O that is responsible for the improved catalytic activity for WGS reaction. The combined H-2-TPR and XPS results show a synergism exists among Pd, Ni and ceria support. The redox reaction mechanism was used to correlate experimental data for the WGS reaction and a mechanism involving the interaction of adsorbed H-2 and O-2 through the hydroxyl species was proposed for CHC reaction. The parity plot shows a good correspondence between the experimental and predicted reaction rates. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

TiO2 and Al2O3 are commonly used materials in optical thin films in the visible and near‐infrared wavelength region due to their high transparency and good stability. In this work, TiO2 and Al2O3 single, and nano composite thin films with different compositions were deposited on glass and silicon substrates at room temperature using a sol‐gel spin coater. The optical properties like reflectance, transmittance and refractive index have been studied using Spectrophotometer, and structural properties using X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Riboflavin tetraacetate-catalyzed aerobic photooxidation of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanol was investigated as a model reaction under blue visible light in different soft gel materials, aiming to establish their potential as reaction vessels for photochemical transformations. Three strategies involving different degrees of organization of the catalyst within the gel network were explored, and the results compared to those obtained in homogeneous and micellar solutions. In general, physical entrapment of both the catalyst and the substrate under optimized concentrations into several hydrogel matrices (including low-molecular-weight and biopolymer-based gels) allowed the photooxidation with conversions between 55 and 100% within 120 min (TOF similar to 0.045-0.08 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.011-0.028 min(-1)), albeit with first-order rates ca. 1-3-fold lower than in solution under comparable non-stirred conditions. Remarkably, the organogel made of a cyclohexane-based bisamide gelator in CH3CN not only prevented the photodegradation of the catalyst but also afforded full conversion in less than 60 min (TOF similar to 0.167 min(-1); k(obs) similar to 0.073 min(-1)) without the need of additional proton transfer mediators (e. g., thiourea) as it occurs in CH3CN solutions. In general, the gelators could be recycled without detriment to their gelation ability and reaction rates. Moreover, kinetics could be fine-tuned according to the characteristics of the gel media. For instance, entangled fibrillar networks with relatively high mechanical strength were usually associated with lower reaction rates, whereas wrinkled laminated morphologies seemed to favor the reaction. In addition, the kinetics results showed in most cases a good correlation with the aeration efficiency of the gel media.
