In the present study, titanium nitride which shows exceptional stability, extreme corrosion resistance, good electronic conductivity and adhesion behaviour is used to support platinum particles and then used for methanol oxidation in an alkaline medium. The catalyst shows very good CO tolerance for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol. In situ infrared spectroelectrochemical data show the remarkable ability of TiN to decompose water at low over potentials leading to -OH type functional groups on its surface which in turn help in alleviating the carbon monoxide poisoning associated with methanol oxidation. TiN supported catalysts are found to be very good in terms of long term stability, exchange current density and stable currents at low over voltages. Supporting evidence from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data and cyclic voltammetry clearly demonstrates the usefulness of TiN supported Pt catalysts for efficient methanol oxidation in alkaline media.

Cast aluminium alloy mica particle composites of varying mica content were tested in tension, compression, and impact. With 2.2 percent mica (size range 40µm – 120µm) the tensile and compression strengths of aluminium alloy decreased by 56 and 22 percent, respectively. The corresponding decreases in percent elongation and percent reduction are 49 and 39 percent. Previous work [2] shows that despite this decrease in strength the composite with 2.5 percent mica and having an UTS of 15 kg/mm2 and compression strength of 28 kg/mm2 performs well as a bearing material under severe running conditions. The differences in strength characteristics of cast aluminium-mica particle composites between tension and compression suggests that, as in cast iron, expansion of voids at the matrix particle interface may be the guiding mechanism of the deformation. SEM studies show that on the tensile fractured specimen surface, there are large voids at the particle matrix interface.

In this paper, a finite element analysis of steady-state dynamic crack growth under Mode I, plane strain, small-scale yielding conditions is performed in a rate dependent plastic material characterized by the over-stress model. The main objective of the paper is to obtain theoretically the dependence of dynamic fracture toughness on crack speed. Crack propagation due to a ductile (micro-void) mechanism or a brittle (cleavage) mechanism, as well as transition from one mode to another are considered. The conversion from ductile to brittle has been observed experimentally but has received very little attention using analytical methods. Local fracture criteria based on strains and stresses are used to describe ductile and brittle fracture mechanisms. The results obtained in this paper are in general agreement with micro-structural observations of mode conversion during fracture initiation. Finally, the particular roles played by material rate sensitivity and inertia are examined in some detail.

An interesting application of optical phase conjugation is phase conjugate interferometry. We report here a new approach to real-time interferometry which combines the high phase conjugate efficiency of photorefractive crystals and the fast response times offered by dye-doped polymer films by using a composite structure. The ability of this material to generate two independent but overlapping phase conjugate waves. which can interfere to reveal the phase changes in a test object, is discussed and demonstrated with a specific example.

Phase-pure, crystalline lanthanide chromates LnCrO4 (V), where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu and Y, have been prepared by the controlled combustion of the corresponding lanthanide biscitrato chromium (III) complexes at comparatively low temperatures. Formation of chromates (V) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, infrared and electronic spectroscopy. Phase purity of the materials has also been confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

The structures of Ca0.5Ti2P3O12 and Sr0.5Ti2P3O12, low-thermal-expansion materials, have been refined by the Rietveld method using high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The assignment of space group R[3 with combining macron] to NASICON-type compounds containing divalent cations is confirmed. 31P magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) data are presented as supporting data. A comparison of changes in the polyhedral network resulting from the cation distribution, is made with NaTi2P3O12 and Nb2P3O12. Factors that may govern thermal expansion in this family of compounds are discussed.

Electrochemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide, prepared from pre-exfoliated graphite, in acetamide-urea-ammonium nitrate ternary eutectic melt results in few layer-graphene thin films. Negatively charged exfoliated graphene oxide is attached to positively charged cystamine monolyer self-assembled on a gold surface. Electrochemical reduction of the oriented graphene oxide film is carried out in a room temperature, ternary molten electrolyte. The reduced film is characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), conductive AFM, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Ternary eutectic melt is found to be a suitable medium for the regulated reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide-based sheets on conducting surfaces. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, we present a novel analytical formulation for the coupled partial differential equations governing electrostatically actuated constrained elastic structures of inhomogeneous material composition. We also present a computationally efficient numerical framework for solving the coupled equations over a reference domain with a fixed finite-element mesh. This serves two purposes: (i) a series of problems with varying geometries and piece-wise homogeneous and/or inhomogeneous material distribution can be solved with a single pre-processing step, (ii) topology optimization methods can be easily implemented by interpolating the material at each point in the reference domain from a void to a dielectric or a conductor. This is attained by considering the steady-state electrical current conduction equation with a `leaky capacitor' model instead of the usual electrostatic equation. This formulation is amenable for both static and transient problems in the elastic domain coupled with the quasi-electrostatic electric field. The procedure is numerically implemented on the COMSOL Multiphysics (R) platform using the weak variational form of the governing equations. Examples have been presented to show the accuracy and versatility of the scheme. The accuracy of the scheme is validated for the special case of piece-wise homogeneous material in the limit of the leaky-capacitor model approaching the ideal case.

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were grown on the surface of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by a wet chemical synthesis route. The anchoring of ZnO NPs on acid-treated MWCNTs was achieved under remarkably mild reaction conditions (low temperature, atmospheric pressure, without any capping agents and no need for subsequent thermal annealing). MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid samples with varying loading of ZnO NPs are prepared. A very high degree of dispersion of ZnO NPs over the surface of MWCNT was achieved by suitably controlling the ratio of ZnO NPs and MWCNTs in the solution. The hybrid sample was characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Transmission electron microscope images of the as-prepared MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid reveal that mono-dispersed ZnO NPs are anchored stably on functionalized MWCNTs. The interaction of ZnO NPs with MWCNT surface was interpreted through XPS analysis.

Polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple and inexpensive one-step in situ polymerization method in the presence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. The structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the samples were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WAXD and SEM revealed the formation of polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that there was some interaction between the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyaniline. The dc electrical conductivity measurements were carried in the temperature range of 80 to 300 K. With increase in the doping concentration of ZnFe2O4, the conductivity of the nanocomposites found to be decreasing from 5.15 to 0.92 Scm(-1) and the temperature dependent resistivity follows ln rho(T) similar to T-1/2 behavior. The nanocomposites (80 wt % of ZnFe2O4) show a more negative magnetoresistance compared with that of pure polyaniline (PANI). These results suggest that the interaction between the polymer matrix PANI and zinc nanoparticles take place in these nanocomposites. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present a framework for performance evaluation of manufacturing systems subject to failure and repair. In particular, we determine the mean and variance of accumulated production over a specified time frame and show the usefulness of these results in system design and in evaluating operational policies for manufacturing systems. We extend this analysis for lead time as well. A detailed performability study is carried out for the generic model of a manufacturing system with centralized material handling. Several numerical results are presented, and the relevance of performability analysis in resolving system design issues is highlighted. Specific problems addressed include computing the distribution of total production over a shift period, determining the shift length necessary to deliver a given production target with a desired probability, and obtaining the distribution of Manufacturing Lead Time, all in the face of potential subsystem failures.

A versatile fungus isolated in our laboratory and identified as Mucor piriformis has been shown to effect novel and preparatively useful transformations in steroids and morphine alkaloids. The organism very effectively carries out hydroxylation of various C-19 and C-21 steroids at 7 and 14-positions. Although the organism is capable of catalysing hydroxylation at 6 beta and 11 alpha-positions, these are not the major activities. The 14 alpha-hydroxylase appears to have a broad substrate specificity. However, steroids with a bulky substitution at C-17 alpha-position or without the 4-en-3-one group are not accepted as substrates by the 14 alpha-hydroxylase system. Studies have demonstrated how various C-19 and C-21 steroids can be modified to yield new structures which are either difficult to prepare by traditional methods or hitherto unknown. The organism also very efficiently and selectively carries out the N-dealkylation of thebaine and its N-variants. Interestingly, the nor-compound formed does not get further metabolized. Since thebaine is very often used as a starting material to synthesize various morphine agonists as well as antagonists, and one of the steps involved in their preparation is the N-dealkylation reaction, the microbial process could certainly offer an alternative approach.
