An optimal control law for a general nonlinear system can be obtained by solving Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. However, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution of this equation even for a moderately complex system. In this paper, we propose a continuoustime single network adaptive critic scheme for nonlinear control affine systems where the optimal cost-to-go function is approximated using a parametric positive semi-definite function. Unlike earlier approaches, a continuous-time weight update law is derived from the HJB equation. The stability of the system is analysed during the evolution of weights using Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated through simulation examples.

For a homing interceptor, suitable initial condition must be achieved by mid course guidance scheme for its maximum effectiveness. To achieve desired end goal of any mid course guidance scheme, two point boundary value problem must be solved online with all realistic constrain. A Newly developed computationally efficient technique named as MPSP (Model Predictive Static Programming) is utilized in this paper for obtaining suboptimal solution of optimal mid course guidance. Time to go uncertainty is avoided in this formulation by making use of desired position where midcourse guidance terminate and terminal guidance takes over. A suitable approach angle towards desired point also can be specified in this guidance law formulation. This feature makes this law particularly attractive because warhead effectiveness issue can be indirectly solved in mid course phase.

A new technique named as model predictive spread acceleration guidance (MPSAG) is proposed in this paper. It combines nonlinear model predictive control and spread acceleration guidance philosophies. This technique is then used to design a nonlinear suboptimal guidance law for a constant speed missile against stationary target with impact angle constraint. MPSAG technique can be applied to a class of nonlinear problems, which leads to a closed form solution of the lateral acceleration (latax) history update. Guidance command assumed is the lateral acceleration (latax), applied normal to the velocity vector. The new guidance law is validated by considering the nonlinear kinematics with both lag-free as well as first order autopilot delay. The simulation results show that the proposed technique is quite promising to come up with a nonlinear guidance law that leads to both very small miss distance as well as the desired impact angle.

Phase transformation behaviour of amorphous electroless Ni-B coating with a targeted composition of Ni-6wt% B is characterized in conjunction with microstructural development and hardness. Microscopic observations of the as-deposited coating display a novel microstructure which is already phase separated at multiple length scales. Spherical colonies of similar to 5 mu m consist of 2-3 mu m nodular regions which are surrounded by similar to 2-3 mu m region that contains fine bands ranging from 10 to 70 nm in width. The appearance of three crystalline phases in this binary system at different stages of heat treatment and the concomitant variation in hardness are shown to arise from nanoscale fluctuations in the as-deposited boron content from 4 to 8 wt%. High temperature annealing reveals continuous crystallization up to 430 degrees C, overlapping with the domain of B loss due to diffusion into the substrate. The implications of such a microstructure for optimal heat treatment procedures are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The approach taken in this paper in order to modify the scattering features of electrons and phonons and improve the figure of merit (ZT) of thermoelectric PbTe is to alter the microstructure at constant chemistry. A lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe at the nano- and microscale was produced in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy by the diffusional decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution. The mechanism of nanostructuration is most likely a discontinuous spinodal decomposition. A simple model relating the interface velocity to the observed lamellar spacing is proposed. The effects of nanostructuration in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy on the electrical and thermal conductivity, thermopower and ZT were investigated. It was shown that nanostructuration through the formation of a lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe is unlikely to provide a significant improvement due to the occurrence of discontinuous coarsening. However, the present study allows an analysis of possible strategies to improve thermoelectric materials via optimal design of the microstructure and optimized heat treatment. We have demonstrated the synthesis of light-sensitive polyelectrolyte capsules (PECs) by utilizing a novel polyol reduction method and investigated its applicability as photosensitive drug delivery vehicle. The nanostructured capsules were prepared via layer by layer (LbL) assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAN) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica particles followed by in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs). Capsules without silver NPs were permeable to low molecular weight (A(w), 479 g/mol) rhodamine but impermeable to higher molecular weight fluorescence labeled dextran (FITC-dextran). However, capsules synthesized with silver NPs showed porous morphology and were permeable to higher molecular weight (M(w) 70 kDa) FITC-dextran also. These capsules were loaded with FITC-dextran using thermal encapsulation method by exploiting temperature induced shrinking of the capsules. During heat treatment the porous morphology of the capsules transformed into smooth pore free structure which prevents the movement of dextran into bulk during the loading process. When these loaded capsules are exposed to laser pulses, the capsule wall ruptured, resulting in the release of the loaded drug/dye. The rupture of the capsules was dependent on particle size, laser pulse energy and exposure time. The release was linear with time when pulse energy of 400 mu J was used and burst release was observed when pulse energy increased to 600 mu J.

In lean premixed pre-vaporized (LPP) combustion, controlled atomization, dispersion and vaporization of different types of liquid fuel in the premixer are the key factors required to stabilize the combustion process and improve the efficiency. The dispersion and vaporization process for biofuels and conventional fuels sprayed into a crossflow pre-mixer have been simulated and analyzed with respect to vaporization rate, degree of mixedness and homogeneity. Two major biofuels under investigation are Ethanol and Rapeseed Methyl Esters (RME), while conventional fuels are gasoline and jet-A. First, the numerical code is validated by comparing with the experimental data of single n-heptane and decane droplet evaporating under both moderate and high temperature convective air now. Next, the spray simulations were conducted with monodispersed droplets with an initial diameter of 80 mu m injected into a turbulent crossflow of air with a typical velocity of 10 m/s and temperature of around 800K. Vaporization time scales of different fuels are found to be very different. The droplet diameter reduction and surface temperature rise were found to be strongly dependent on the fuel properties. Gasoline droplet exhibited a much faster vaporization due a combination of higher vapor pressure and smaller latent heat of vaporization compared to other fuels. Mono-dispersed spray was adopted with the expectation of achieving more homogeneous fuel droplet size than poly-dispersed spray. However, the diameter histogram in the zone near the pre-mixer exit shows a large range of droplet diameter distributions for all the fuels. In order to improve the vaporization performance, fuels were pre-heated before injection. Results show that the Sauter mean diameter of ethanol improved from 52.8% of the initial injection size to 48.2%, while jet-A improved from 48.4% to 18.6% and RME improved from 63.5% to 31.3%. The diameter histogram showed improved vaporization performance of jet-A. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work is concerned with the interaction of a source-sink pair. The main parameters of the problem are source and sink flow rates, the axial and lateral separations of the source and sink, and the angle between the axes of source and sink. Of concern is the percentage of source fluid that enters the sink as a function of these parameters. The experiments have been carried using the source nozzle diameter of 6 mm and the sink pipe diameter of two sizes: 10 mm and 20 mm. The Reynolds numbers of the source jet is about 3200. The main diagnostics are flow visualization using dye, laser induced fluorescence (LIF), particle streak photographs and particle image velocimetry (Ply). To obtain the removal effectiveness (that is percentage of source fluid that is going through the sink pipe), titration method is used. The sink diameter and the angle between source and the sink axes do not influence efficiencies as do the sink flow rate and the lateral separation. Data from experiments have been consolidated so that these results can be used for designing sinks for removal of heat and pollutants. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The variation in temperature and concentration plays a crucial role in predicting the final microstructure during solidification of a binary alloy. Most of the experimental techniques used to measure concentration and temperature are intrusive in nature and affect the flow field. In this paper, the main focus is laid on in-situ, non-intrusive, transient measurement of concentration and temperature during the solidification of a binary mixture of aqueous ammonium chloride solution (a metal-analog system) in a top cooled cavity using laser based Mach-Zehnder Interferometric technique. It was found from the interferogram, that the angular deviation of fringe pattern and the total number of fringes exhibit significant sensitivity to refractive index and hence are functions of the local temperature and concentration of the NH4Cl solution inside the cavity. Using the fringe characteristics, calibration curves were established for the range of temperature and concentration levels expected during the solidification process. In the actual solidification experiment, two hypoeutectic solutions (5% and 15% NH4Cl) were chosen. The calibration curves were used to determine the temperature and concentration of the solution inside the cavity during solidification of 5% and 15% NH4Cl solution at different instants of time. The measurement was carried out at a fixed point in the cavity, and the concentration variation with time was recorded as the solid-liquid interface approached the measurement point. The measurement exhibited distinct zones of concentration distribution caused by solute rejection and Rayleigh Benard convection. Further studies involving flow visualization with laser scattering confirmed the Rayleigh Benard convection. Computational modeling was also performed, which corroborated the experimental findings. Nanostructured TiO2 is one of the most commonly used materials in photocatalytic applications and photochemical solar cells. This article describes a method to synthesize nanoporous anatase TiO2 membranes directly on stainless steel (SS), an easily available substrate by anodization to form amorphous TiO2 and a subsequent heat treatment to convert it into anatase, the photoactive phase. To obtain adherent membranes with interfaces that are resistant to peeling, both anodization and heat treatment parameters need to be optimized to obtain a heterostructure that contains a Ti film between the TiO2 membrane and the substrate.

Thermal management of distributed electronics similar to data centers is studied using a bi-disperse porous medium (BDPM) approach. The BDPM channel comprises heat generating micro-porous square blocks, separated by macro-pores. Laminar forced convection cooling fluid of Pr = 0.7 saturates both the micro- and macro-pores. Bi-dispersion effect is induced by varying the macro-pore volume fraction phi(E), and by changing the number of porous blocks N-2, both representing re-distribution of the electronics. When 0.2 <= phi(E) <= 0.86, the heat transfer No is enhanced twice (from similar to 550 to similar to 1100) while the pressure drop Delta p* reduces almost eightfold. For phi(E) < 0.5, No reduces quickly to reach a minimum at the mono -disperse porous medium (MDPM) limit (phi(E) -> 0). Compared to N-2 = 1 case, No for BDPM configuration is high when N-2 >> 1, i.e., the micro-porous blocks are many and well distributed. The Nu increase with Re changes from non-linear to linear as N-2 increases from 1 to 81, with corresponding insignificant pumping power increase. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of natural convection on the oscillatory flow in an open-ended pipe driven by a timewise sinusoidally varying pressure at one end and subjected to an ambient-to-cryogenic temperature difference across the ends, is numerically studied. Conjugate effects arising out of the interaction of oscillatory flow with heat conduction in the pipe wall are taken into account by considering a finite thickness wall with an insulated exterior surface. Two cases, namely, one with natural convection acting downwards and the other, with natural convection acting upwards, are considered. The full set of compressible flow equations with axissymmetry are solved using a pressure correction algorithm. Parametric studies are conducted with frequencies in the range 5-15 Hz for an end-to-end temperature difference of 200 and 50 K. Results are obtained for the variation of velocity, temperature. Nusselt number and the phase relationship between mass flow rate and temperature. It is found that the Rayleigh number has a minimal effect on the time averaged Nusselt number and phase angle. However, it does influence the local variation of velocity and Nusselt number over one cycle. The natural convection and pressure amplitude have influence on the energy flow through the gas and solid. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present paper discusses the flow visualization for turbulent free convection in a tank of water with the bottom surface being a smooth or a grooved surface and the top of the water surface exposed to ambient. The grooved surface is of parallel 90 degrees V-grooves with groove height of 10 mm and groove width of 20 mm. The experiment is carried out with aspect ratio (AR) of 2.9 and Rayleigh number (Ra) in the range, 1.3 x 10(7) - 4 x 10(7). Here AR is the aspect ratio (= width of fluid layer/height of fluid layer). Heat flux at the bottom surface is from electrical heating. From the pH-dye visualization, interesting flow structures are observed and these structures are analyzed with the help of plumes dynamics and temperature variations with time. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Transparent glasses in the BaO-Na2O-B2O3 (BNBO) system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), respectively. Cyclic heat treatment of the as-quenched glasses yielded transparent glass-microcrystal composites. The volume fraction of the crystallites and their sizes could be easily controlled by this process. Heat-treated samples were highly transparent owing to the minimum mismatch between the refractive indices of the crystallites and the glass residual matrix. BNBO samples that were heat treated at 540A degrees C for 4 h for 10 cycles were found to be 60% to 70% transparent in the 500 nm to 900 nm wavelength range.

Hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods were prepared by hydrothermal method. Dy(OH)(3) nanorods was directly obtained at 180 degrees C for 20 h after hydrothermal treatment whereas subsequently heat treatment at 750 degrees C for 2 h gives pure cubic Dy2O3. SEM micrographs reveal that needle shaped rods with different sizes were observed in both the phases. TEM results also confirm this. The TL response of hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods have been analyzed for gamma-irradiation over a wide range of exposures (1-5 kGy). TL glow peak intensity increases with gamma dose in both the phases. The activation energy (E), order of kinetics (6), and frequency factor (s) for both the phases have been determined using Chen's peak shape method. The simple glow curve shape, structure and linear response to gamma-irradiation over a large span of exposures makes the cubic Dy2O3 as a useful dosimetric material to estimate high exposures of gamma-rays.
