A study has been made of the problem of steady, one-dimensional, laminar flame propagation in premixed gases, with the Lewis number differing from (and equal to) unity. Analytical solutions, using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, have been obtained for large activation energies. Numerical solutions have been obtained for a wide range of the reduced activation temperature parameter (n {geometrically equal to} E/RTb), and the Lewis number δ. The studies reveal that the flame speed eigenvalue is linear in Lewis number for first order and quadratic in Lewis number for second order reactions. For a quick determination of flame speeds, with reasonable accuracy, a simple rule, expressing the flame speed eigenvalue as a function of the Lewis number and the centroid of the reaction rate function, is proposed. Comparisons have been made with some of the earlier works, for both first and second order reactions.

The stress concentration that occurs when load is diffused from a constant stress member into thin sheet is an important problem in the design of light weight structures. By using solutions in biharmonic polar-trigonometric series, the stress concentration can be effectively isolated so that highly accurate information necessary for design can be obtained. A method of analysis yielding high accuracy with limited effort is presented for rectangular panels with transverse edges free or supported by inextensional end ribs. Numerical data are given for panels with length twice the width.

Resistometric studies of isochronal and isothermal annealing of an Al-0.64 at.% Ag alloy have given a value of 0.13 ± 0.02 eV for the silver-vacancy binding energy and 0.55 ± 0.03 eV for the migration energy of solute atoms.

Al-4.4 a/oZn and Al-4.4 a/oZn with Ag, Ce, Dy, Li, Nb, Pt, Y, or Yb, alloys have been investigated by resistometry with a view to study the solute-vacancy interactions and clustering kinetics in these alloys. Solute-vacancy binding energies have been evaluated for all these elements by making use of appropriate methods of evaluation. Ag and Dy additions yield some interesting results and these have been discussed in the thesis. Solute-vacancy binding energy values obtained here have been compared with other available values and discussed. A study of the type of interaction between vacancies and solute atoms indicates that the valency effect is more predominant than the elastic effect.

The oxidation rate of a cuprous sulfide pellet suspended in a stream of air was followed by measuring the evolution of SO2 titrimetrically. Thin thermocouples embedded in the center of the sample recorded the variation of temperature during oxidation. The reaction was found to be topochemical and the sample temperature was found to be higher than its surroundings initially for about half an hour. After this initial period, the sample temperature decreased to that of the surroundings and remained constant during the rest of the period of over 5 hr. The apparent activation energy from the experimental data was found to be different for the initial (nonisothermal) and subsequent (isothermal) periods. Rate controlling mechanisms for these two intervals have been proposed based on interface chemical reaction, mass transfer resistance, and heat transfer concepts. Fair agreement is found between the theoretical rates based on transport mechanisms and those obtained experimentally

A working model is given for the rate of ultrasonic emulsification, considering the dispersion at the interface (area A) and the coagulations in the volume V of the emulsion. A bimolecular coagulation leads to the equation c=c∞tanh bt;c∞=(Aα/Vβ)1/2;b=(Aαβ/V)1/2 while a monomolecular coagulation gives c=c∞{1-exp (-at)};c∞=Aα/Vβ;a=β. The experiments on the dependence of c∞, a and b upon A and V favour the bimolecular coagulation. The results are satisfactorily explained on general theoretical grounds.

1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo-polymerization to give poly(HDDA-co-MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D-shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of confined water inside similar to 1.4 nm diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We show that the confined water does not freeze even up to 223 K. A pulse field gradient (PFG) NMR method is used to determine the mean squared displacement (MSD) of the water molecules inside the nanotubes at temperatures below 273 K, where the bulk water outside the nanotubes freezes and hence does not contribute to the proton NMR signal. We show that the mean squared displacement varies as the square root of time, predicted for single-file diffusion in a one-dimensional channel. We propose a qualitative understanding of our results based on available molecular dynamics simulations.

We use atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the diffusion of water molecules confined inside narrow (6,6) carbon nanorings. The water molecules form two oppositely polarized chains. It is shown that the effective interaction between these two chains is repulsive in nature. The computed mean-squared displacement (MSD) clearly shows a scaling with time

Crystallization kinetics of MSI and MSII stages in Metglas 2826A has been investigated by quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The volume fraction of crystallization against time curve has been found to show a plateau in the lower temperature region of annealing. It has been found that the glass transition temperature, T g, has no effect on the sequence reversal of the crystallization reaction. It has been shown that the sequence reversal of transformation stages occurs due to the large difference in the activation energy of crystallization of MSI and MSII. In addition, the change in the morphology of the crystals obtained by annealing the amorphous alloy below and above the glass transition temperature, T g, is reported.
