The problem of designing good space-time block codes (STBCs) with low maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding complexity has gathered much attention in the literature. All the known low ML decoding complexity techniques utilize the same approach of exploiting either the multigroup decodable or the fast-decodable (conditionally multigroup decodable) structure of a code. We refer to this well-known technique of decoding STBCs as conditional ML (CML) decoding. In this paper, we introduce a new framework to construct ML decoders for STBCs based on the generalized distributive law (GDL) and the factor-graph-based sum-product algorithm. We say that an STBC is fast GDL decodable if the order of GDL decoding complexity of the code, with respect to the constellation size, is strictly less than M-lambda, where lambda is the number of independent symbols in the STBC. We give sufficient conditions for an STBC to admit fast GDL decoding, and show that both multigroup and conditionally multigroup decodable codes are fast GDL decodable. For any STBC, whether fast GDL decodable or not, we show that the GDL decoding complexity is strictly less than the CML decoding complexity. For instance, for any STBC obtained from cyclic division algebras which is not multigroup or conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder provides about 12 times reduction in complexity compared to the CML decoder. Similarly, for the Golden code, which is conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder is only half as complex as the CML decoder.

We propose a novel numerical method based on a generalized eigenvalue decomposition for solving the diffusion equation governing the correlation diffusion of photons in turbid media. Medical imaging modalities such as diffuse correlation tomography and ultrasound-modulated optical tomography have the (elliptic) diffusion equation parameterized by a time variable as the forward model. Hitherto, for the computation of the correlation function, the diffusion equation is solved repeatedly over the time parameter. We show that the use of a certain time-independent generalized eigenfunction basis results in the decoupling of the spatial and time dependence of the correlation function, thus allowing greater computational efficiency in arriving at the forward solution. Besides presenting the mathematical analysis of the generalized eigenvalue problem on the basis of spectral theory, we put forth the numerical results that compare the proposed numerical method with the standard technique for solving the diffusion equation.

We consider holographic entanglement entropy in higher derivative gravity theories. Recently Lewkowycz and Maldacena 1] have provided a method to derive the equations for the entangling surface from first principles. We use this method to compute the entangling surface in four derivative gravity. Certain interesting differences compared to the two derivative case are pointed out. For Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we show that in the regime where this method is applicable, the resulting equations coincide with proposals in the literature as well as with what follows from considerations of the stress tensor on the entangling surface. Finally we demonstrate that the area functional in Gauss-Bonnet holography arises as a counterterm needed to make the Euclidean action free of power law divergences.

In this paper, a current hysteresis controller with parabolic boundaries for a 12-sided polygonal voltage space vector inverter fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed. Parabolic boundaries with generalized vector selection logic, valid for all sectors and rotational direction, is used in the proposed controller. The current error space phasor boundary is obtained by first studying the drive scheme with space vector based PWM (SVPWM) controller. Four parabolas are used to approximate this current error space phasor boundary. The system is then run with space phasor based hysteresis PWM controller by limiting the current error space vector (CESV) within the parabolic boundary. The proposed controller has simple controller implementation, nearly constant switching frequency, extended modulation range and fast dynamic response with smooth transition to the over modulation region.

In this article, we present the discovery of a metallo-organogel derived from a Tb3+ salt and sodium deoxycholate (NaDCh) in methanol. The gel was made luminescent through sensitization of Tb3+ by doping with 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) in micromolar concentrations. Rheological measurements of the mechanical properties of the organogel confirmed the characteristics of a true gel. Significant quenching of Tb3+ luminescence was observed in the deoxycholate gel matrix by 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF), but not by several other polynitro aromatics. Microscopic studies (AFM, TEM and SEM) revealed a highly entangled fibrous network. The xerogels retained luminescent properties suggesting the possibility for application in coatings, etc.

In this paper, a nonlinear suboptimal detector whose performance in heavy-tailed noise is significantly better than that of the matched filter is proposed. The detector consists of a nonlinear wavelet denoising filter to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio, followed by a replica correlator. Performance of the detector is investigated through an asymptotic theoretical analysis as well as Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed detector offers the following advantages over the optimal (in the Neyman-Pearson sense) detector: it is easier to implement, and it is more robust with respect to error in modeling the probability distribution of noise.

We refer to this well known technique of decoding STBCs as Conditional ML (CML) decoding. In [1], we introduced a framework to construct ML decoders for STBCs based on the Generalized Distributive Law (GDL) and the Factor-graph based Sum-Product Algorithm, and showed that for two specific families of STBCs, the Toepltiz codes and the Overlapped Alamouti Codes (OACs), the GDL based ML decoders have strictly less complexity than the CML decoders. In this paper, we introduce a `traceback' step to the GDL decoding algorithm of STBCs, which enables roughly 4 times reduction in the complexity of the GDL decoders proposed in [1]. Utilizing this complexity reduction from `traceback', we then show that for any STBC (not just the Toeplitz and Overlapped Alamouti Codes), the GDL decoding complexity is strictly less than the CML decoding complexity. For instance, for any STBC obtained from Cyclic Division Algebras that is not multigroup or conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder provides approximately 12 times reduction in complexity compared to the CML decoder. Similarly, for the Golden code, which is conditionally multigroup decodable, the GDL decoder is only about half as complex as the CML decoder.

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a relatively new modulation scheme for multi-antenna wireless communications. It is quite attractive because of its ability to work with less number of transmit RF chains compared to traditional spatial multiplexing (V-BLAST system). In this paper, we show that, by using an optimum combination of number of transmit antennas (N-t) and number of transmit RF chains (N-rf), GSM can achieve better throughput and/or bit error rate (BER) than spatial multiplexing. First, we quantify the percentage savings in the number of transmit RF chains as well as the percentage increase in the rate achieved in GSM compared to spatial multiplexing; 18.75% savings in number of RF chains and 9.375% increase in rate are possible with 16 transmit antennas and 4-QAM modulation. A bottleneck, however, is the complexity of maximum-likelihood (ML) detection of GSM signals, particularly in large MIMO systems where the number of antennas is large. We address this detection complexity issue next. Specifically, we propose a Gibbs sampling based algorithm suited to detect GSM signals. The proposed algorithm yields impressive BER performance and complexity results. For the same spectral efficiency and number of transmit RF chains, GSM with the proposed detection algorithm achieves better performance than spatial multiplexing with ML detection.

A new `generalized model predictive static programming (G-MPSP)' technique is presented in this paper in the continuous time framework for rapidly solving a class of finite-horizon nonlinear optimal control problems with hard terminal constraints. A key feature of the technique is backward propagation of a small-dimensional weight matrix dynamics, using which the control history gets updated. This feature, as well as the fact that it leads to a static optimization problem, are the reasons for its high computational efficiency. It has been shown that under Euler integration, it is equivalent to the existing model predictive static programming technique, which operates on a discrete-time approximation of the problem. Performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated by solving a challenging three-dimensional impact angle constrained missile guidance problem. The problem demands that the missile must meet constraints on both azimuth and elevation angles in addition to achieving near zero miss distance, while minimizing the lateral acceleration demand throughout its flight path. Both stationary and maneuvering ground targets are considered in the simulation studies. Effectiveness of the proposed guidance has been verified by considering first order autopilot lag as well as various target maneuvers.

Reaction of the salicylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde (H2L1), anthranylhydrazone of 2hydroxy-l-naphthaldehyde (H2L2), benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-acetonaphthone (H2L3) and anthranylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-acetonaphthone (H2L4; general abbreviation H2L) with MoO2(acac)21 afforded a series of 5- and 6- coordinate Mo(VI) complexes of the type MoO2L1-2(ROH)] where R = C2H5 (1) and CH3 (2)], and MoO2L3-4] (3 and 4). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation of one mononuclear mixed-ligand dioxidomolybdenum complex MoO2L1(Q)] (where Q= gamma-picoline (la)). Molecular structure of all the complexes (I, la, 2,3 and 4) is determined by X-ray crystallography, demonstrating the dibasic tridentate behavior of ligands. All the complexes show two irreversible reductive responses within the potential window -0.73 to -1.08 V, due to Movl/Mov and Mov/Mow processes. Catalytic potential of these complexes was tested for the oxidation of benzoin using 30% aqueous H2O2 as an oxidant in methanol. At least four reaction products, benzoic acid, benzaldehydedimethylacetal, methyl benzoate and benzil were obtained with the 95-99% conversion under optimized reaction conditions. Oxidative bromination of salicylaldehyde, a functional mimic of haloperoxidases, in aqueous 1-1202/KEr in the presence of HC1O4 at room temperature has also been carried out successfully. Hit-to-kill interception of high velocity spiraling target requires accurate state estimation of relative kinematic parameters describing spiralling motion. In this pa- per, spiraling target motion is captured by representing target acceleration through sinusoidal function in inertial frame. A nine state unscented Kalman filter (UKF) formulation is presented here with three relative positions, three relative velocities, spiraling frequency of target, inverse of ballistic coefficient and maneuvering coef-ficient. A key advantage of the target model presented here is that it is of generic nature and can capture spiraling as well as pure ballistic motions without any change of tuning parameters. Extensive Six-DOF simulation experiments, which includes a modified PN guidance and dynamic inversion based autopilot, show that near Hit-to-Kill performance can be obtained with noisy RF seeker measurements of gimbal angles, gimbal angle rates, range and range rate.

An extended Kalman filter based generalized state estimation approach is presented in this paper for accurately estimating the states of incoming high-speed targets such as ballistic missiles. A key advantage of this nine-state problem formulation is that it is very much generic and can capture spiraling as well as pure ballistic motion of targets without any change of the target model and the tuning parameters. A new nonlinear model predictive zero-effort-miss based guidance algorithm is also presented in this paper, in which both the zero-effort-miss as well as the time-to-go are predicted more accurately by first propagating the nonlinear target model (with estimated states) and zero-effort interceptor model simultaneously. This information is then used for computing the necessary lateral acceleration. Extensive six-degrees-of-freedom simulation experiments, which include noisy seeker measurements, a nonlinear dynamic inversion based autopilot for the interceptor along with appropriate actuator and sensor models and magnitude and rate saturation limits for the fin deflections, show that near-zero miss distance (i.e., hit-to-kill level performance) can be obtained when these two new techniques are applied together. Comparison studies with an augmented proportional navigation based guidance shows that the proposed model predictive guidance leads to a substantial amount of conservation in the control energy as well.
Binaural Signal Processing Motivated Generalized Analytic Signal Construction and AM-FM Demodulation
Resumo:
Binaural hearing studies show that the auditory system uses the phase-difference information in the auditory stimuli for localization of a sound source. Motivated by this finding, we present a method for demodulation of amplitude-modulated-frequency-modulated (AM-FM) signals using a ignal and its arbitrary phase-shifted version. The demodulation is achieved using two allpass filters, whose impulse responses are related through the fractional Hilbert transform (FrHT). The allpass filters are obtained by cosine-modulation of a zero-phase flat-top prototype halfband lowpass filter. The outputs of the filters are combined to construct an analytic signal (AS) from which the AM and FM are estimated. We show that, under certain assumptions on the signal and the filter structures, the AM and FM can be obtained exactly. The AM-FM calculations are based on the quasi-eigenfunction approximation. We then extend the concept to the demodulation of multicomponent signals using uniform and non-uniform cosine-modulated filterbank (FB) structures consisting of flat bandpass filters, including the uniform cosine-modulated, equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB), and constant-Q filterbanks. We validate the theoretical calculations by considering application on synthesized AM-FM signals and compare the performance in presence of noise with three other multiband demodulation techniques, namely, the Teager-energy-based approach, the Gabor's AS approach, and the linear transduction filter approach. We also show demodulation results for real signals.

The dibenzyl derivative of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT-Bz(2)) thin film is deposited onto ITO-coated glass substrate by electropolymerization technique. The electropolymerization of ProDOT-Bz(2) is carried out by a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The cyclic voltammogram shows the redox properties of electrochemically prepared films deposited at different scan rates. The thin films prepared were characterized for its morphological properties to study the homogeniety. Classic six-layer structure of PProDOT-Bz(2) electrochromic device using this material was fabricated and reported for the first and its characterizations such as spectroelectrochemical, switching kinetics, and chronoamperometric studies are performed. The color contrast of the thin film and the device achieved are 64 and 40%, respectively, at lambda(max) (628 nm). The switching time is recorded and the observed values are 5 s from the coloring state to the bleaching state and vice versa. The chronoamperometry shows that the device performed up to 400 cycles, and it is capable of working up to 35 cycles without any degradation. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Scaling behaviour has been observed at mesoscopic level irrespective of crystal structure, type of boundary and operative micro-mechanisms like slip and twinning. The presence of scaling at the meso-scale accompanied with that at the nano-scale clearly demonstrates the intrinsic spanning for different deformation processes and a true universal nature of scaling. The origin of a 1/2 power law in deformation of crystalline materials in terms of misorientation proportional to square root of strain is attributed to importance of interfaces in deformation processes. It is proposed that materials existing in three dimensional Euclidean spaces accommodate plastic deformation by one dimensional dislocations and their interaction with two dimensional interfaces at different length scales. This gives rise to a 1/2 power law scaling in materials. This intrinsic relationship can be incorporated in crystal plasticity models that aim to span different length and time scales to predict the deformation response of crystalline materials accurately.
