We develop an approach that combines the power of nonlinear dynamics with the evolution equations for the mobile and immobile dislocation densities and force to explain force fluctuations in nanoindentation experiments. The model includes nucleation, multiplication, and propagation thresholds for mobile dislocations, and other well known dislocation transformation mechanisms. The model predicts all the generic features of nanoindentation such as the Hertzian elastic branch followed by several force drops of decreasing magnitudes, and residual plasticity after unloading. The stress corresponding to the elastic force maximum is close to the yield stress of an ideal solid. The predicted values for all the quantities are close to those reported by experiments. Our model allows us to address the indentation-size effect including the ambiguity in defining the hardness in the force drop dominated regime. At large indentation depths, the hardness remains nearly constant with a marginal decreasing trend.

Using idealized one-dimensional Eulerian hydrodynamic simulations, we contrast the behaviour of isolated supernovae with the superbubbles driven by multiple, collocated supernovae. Continuous energy injection via successive supernovae exploding within the hot/dilute bubble maintains a strong termination shock. This strong shock keeps the superbubble over-pressured and drives the outer shock well after it becomes radiative. Isolated supernovae, in contrast, with no further energy injection, become radiative quite early (less than or similar to 0.1Myr, tens of pc), and stall at scales less than or similar to 100 pc. We show that isolated supernovae lose almost all of their mechanical energy by 1 Myr, but superbubbles can retain up to similar to 40 per cent of the input energy in the form of mechanical energy over the lifetime of the star cluster (a few tens of Myr). These conclusions hold even in the presence of realistic magnetic fields and thermal conduction. We also compare various methods for implementing supernova feedback in numerical simulations. For various feedback prescriptions, we derive the spatial scale below which the energy needs to be deposited in order for it to couple to the interstellar medium. We show that a steady thermal wind within the superbubble appears only for a large number (greater than or similar to 10(4)) of supernovae. For smaller clusters, we expect multiple internal shocks instead of a smooth, dense thermalized wind.

A link level reliable multicast requires a channel access protocol to resolve the collision of feedback messages sent by multicast data receivers. Several deterministic media access control protocols have been proposed to attain high reliability, but with large delay. Besides, there are also protocols which can only give probabilistic guarantee about reliability, but have the least delay. In this paper, we propose a virtual token-based channel access and feedback protocol (VTCAF) for link level reliable multicasting. The VTCAF protocol introduces a virtual (implicit) token passing mechanism based on carrier sensing to avoid the collision between feedback messages. The delay performance is improved in VTCAF protocol by reducing the number of feedback messages. Besides, the VTCAF protocol is parametric in nature and can easily trade off reliability with the delay as per the requirement of the underlying application. Such a cross layer design approach would be useful for a variety of multicast applications which require reliable communication with different levels of reliability and delay performance. We have analyzed our protocol to evaluate various performance parameters at different packet loss rate and compared its performance with those of others. Our protocol has also been simulated using Castalia network simulator to evaluate the same performance parameters. Simulation and analytical results together show that the VTCAF protocol is able to considerably reduce average access delay while ensuring very high reliability at the same time.

Irregular force fluctuations are seen in most nanotubulation experiments. The dynamics behind their presence has, however, been neither commented upon nor modeled. A simple estimate of the mean energy dissipated in force drops turns out to be several times the thermal energy. This coupled with the rate dependent nature of the deformation reported in several experiments point to a dynamical origin of the serrations. We simplify the whole process of tether formation through a three-stage model of successive deformations of sphere to ellipsoid, neck-formation, and tubule birth and extension. Based on this, we envisage a rate-softening frictional force at the neck that must be overcome before a nanotube can be pulled out. Our minimal model includes elastic and visco-elastic deformation of the vesicle, and has built-in dependence on pull velocity, vesicle radius, and other material parameters, enabling us to capture various kinds of serrated force-extension curves for different parameter choices. Serrations are predicted in the nanotubulation region. Other features of force-extension plots reported in the literature such as a plateauing serrated region beyond a force drop, serrated flow region with a small positive slope, an increase in the elastic threshold with pull velocity, force-extension curves for vesicles with larger radius lying lower than those for smaller radius, are all also predicted by the model. A toy model is introduced to demonstrate that the role of the friction law is limited to inducing stick-slip oscillations in the force, and all other qualitative and quantitative features emerging from the model can only be attributed to other physical mechanisms included in the deformation dynamics of the vesicle. Among the intelligent safety technologies for road vehicles, active suspensions controlled by embedded computing elements for preventing rollover have received a lot of attention. The existing models for synthesizing and allocating forces in such suspensions are conservatively based on the constraints that are valid until no wheels lift off the ground. However, the fault tolerance of the rollover-preventive systems can be enhanced if the smart/active suspensions can intervene in the more severe situation in which the wheels have just lifted off the ground. The difficulty in computing control in the last situation is that the vehicle dynamics then passes into the regime that yields a model involving disjunctive constraints on the dynamics. Simulation of dynamics with disjunctive constraints in this context becomes necessary to estimate, synthesize, and allocate the intended hardware realizable forces in an active suspension. In this paper, we give an algorithm for the previously mentioned problem by solving it as a disjunctive dynamic optimization problem. Based on this, we synthesize and allocate the roll-stabilizing time-dependent active suspension forces in terms of sensor output data. We show that the forces obtained from disjunctive dynamics are comparable with existing force allocations and, hence, are possibly realizable in the existing hardware framework toward enhancing the safety and fault tolerance.

A simple ball-drop impact tester is developed for studying the dynamic response of hierarchical, complex, small-sized systems and materials. The developed algorithm and set-up have provisions for applying programmable potential difference along the height of a test specimen during an impact loading; this enables us to conduct experiments on various materials and smart structures whose mechanical behavior is sensitive to electric field. The software-hardware system allows not only acquisition of dynamic force-time data at very fast sampling rate (up to 2 x 10(6) samples/s), but also application of a pre-set potential difference (up to +/- 10 V) across a test specimen for a duration determined by feedback from the force-time data. We illustrate the functioning of the set-up by studying the effect of electric field on the energy absorption capability of carbon nanotube foams of 5 x 5 x 1.2 mm(3) size under impact conditions. Spontaneous entry of water molecules inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has been confirmed by both simulations and experiments. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the thermodynamics of filling of a (6,6) carbon nanotube in a temperature range from 273 to 353K and with different strengths of the nanotube-water interaction. From explicit energy and entropy calculations using the two-phase thermodynamics method, we have presented a thermodynamic understanding of the filling behaviour of a nanotube. We show that both the energy and the entropy of transfer decrease with increasing temperature. On the other hand, scaling down the attractive part of the carbon-oxygen interaction results in increased energy of transfer while the entropy of transfer increases slowly with decreasing the interaction strength. Our results indicate that both energy and entropy favour water entry into (6,6) SWCNTs. Our results are compared with those of several recent studies of water entry into carbon nanotubes.

Efficient bacterial recombinational DNA repair involves rapid cycles of RecA filament assembly and disassembly. The RecX protein plays a crucial inhibitory role in RecA filament formation and stability. As the broken ends of DNA are tethered during homologous search, RecA filaments assembled at the ends are likely subject to force. In this work, we investigated the interplay between RecX and force on RecA filament formation and stability. Using magnetic tweezers, at single molecular level, we found that Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mt) RecX could catalyze stepwise de-polymerization of preformed MtRecA filament in the presence of ATP hydrolysis at low forces (<7 pN). However, applying larger forces antagonized the inhibitory effects of MtRecX, and a partially de-polymerized MtRecA filament could repolymerize in the presence of MtRecX, which cannot be explained by previous models. Theoretical analysis of force-dependent conformational free energies of naked ssDNA and RecA nucleoprotein filament suggests that mechanical force stabilizes RecA filament, which provides a possible mechanism for the observation. As the antagonizing effect of force on the inhibitory function of RecX takes place in a physiological range; these findings broadly suggest a potential mechanosensitive regulation during homologous recombination.

In contemporary orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced, and WiMAX, a codeword is transmitted over a group of subcarriers. Since different subcarriers see different channel gains in frequency-selective channels, the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) of the codeword must be selected based on the vector of signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) of these subcarriers. Exponential effective SNR mapping (EESM) maps the vector of SNRs into an equivalent flat-fading SNR, and is widely used to simplify this problem. We develop a new analytical framework to characterize the throughput of EESM-based rate adaptation in such wideband channels in the presence of feedback delays. We derive a novel accurate approximation for the throughput as a function of feedback delay. We also propose a novel bivariate gamma distribution to model the time evolution of EESM between the times of estimation and data transmission, which facilitates the analysis. These are then generalized to a multi-cell, multi-user scenario with various frequency-domain schedulers. Unlike prior work, most of which is simulation-based, our framework encompasses both correlated and independent subcarriers and various multiple antenna diversity modes; it is accurate over a wide range of delays.

Contemporary cellular standards, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced, employ orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and use frequency-domain scheduling and rate adaptation. In conjunction with feedback reduction schemes, high downlink spectral efficiencies are achieved while limiting the uplink feedback overhead. One such important scheme that has been adopted by these standards is best-m feedback, in which every user feeds back its m largest subchannel (SC) power gains and their corresponding indices. We analyze the single cell average throughput of an OFDM system with uniformly correlated SC gains that employs best-m feedback and discrete rate adaptation. Our model incorporates three schedulers that cover a wide range of the throughput versus fairness tradeoff and feedback delay. We show that, for small m, correlation significantly reduces average throughput with best-m feedback. This result is pertinent as even in typical dispersive channels, correlation is high. We observe that the schedulers exhibit varied sensitivities to correlation and feedback delay. The analysis also leads to insightful expressions for the average throughput in the asymptotic regime of a large number of users.

The quantum statistical mechanical propagator for a harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent force constant, m omega(2)(t), has been investigated in the past and was found to have only a formal solution in terms of the solutions of certain ordinary differential equations. Such path integrals are frequently encountered in semiclassical path integral evaluations and having exact analytical expressions for such path integrals is of great interest. In a previous work, we had obtained the exact propagator for motion in an arbitrary time-dependent harmonic potential in the overdamped limit of friction using phase space path integrals in the context of Levy flights - a result that can be easily extended to Brownian motion. In this paper, we make a connection between the overdamped Brownian motion and the imaginary time propagator of quantum mechanics and thereby get yet another way to evaluate the latter exactly. We find that explicit analytic solution for the quantum statistical mechanical propagator can be written when the time-dependent force constant has the form omega(2)(t) = lambda(2)(t) - d lambda(t)/dt where lambda(t) is any arbitrary function of t and use it to evaluate path integrals which have not been evaluated previously. We also employ this method to arrive at a formal solution of the propagator for both Levy flights and Brownian subjected to a time-dependent harmonic potential in the underdamped limit of friction. Practical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), exploit multi-user diversity using very limited feedback. The best-m feedback scheme is one such limited feedback scheme, in which users report only the gains of their m best subchannels (SCs) and their indices. While the scheme has been extensively studied and adopted in standards such as LTE, an analysis of its throughput for the practically important case in which the SCs are correlated has received less attention. We derive new closed-form expressions for the throughput when the SC gains of a user are uniformly correlated. We analyze the performance of the greedy but unfair frequency-domain scheduler and the fair round-robin scheduler for the general case in which the users see statistically non-identical SCs. An asymptotic analysis is then developed to gain further insights. The analysis and extensive numerical results bring out how correlation reduces throughput.

Cooperative relaying combined with selection has been extensively studied in the literature to improve the performance of interference-constrained secondary users in underlay cognitive radio (CR). We present a novel symbol error probability (SEP)-optimal amplify-and-forward relay selection rule for an average interference-constrained underlay CR system. A fundamental principle, which is unique to average interference-constrained underlay CR, that the proposed rule brings out is that the choice of the optimal relay is affected not just by the source-to-relay, relay-to-destination, and relay-to-primary receiver links, which are local to the relay, but also by the direct source-to-destination (SD) link, even though it is not local to any relay. We also propose a simpler, practically amenable variant of the optimal rule called the 1-bit rule, which requires just one bit of feedback about the SD link gain to the relays, and incurs a marginal performance loss relative to the optimal rule. We analyze its SEP and develop an insightful asymptotic SEP analysis. The proposed rules markedly outperform several ad hoc SD link-unaware rules proposed in the literature. They also generalize the interference-unconstrained and SD link-unaware optimal rules considered in the literature.

Multifrequency atomic force microscopy is a powerful nanoscale imaging and characterization technique that involves excitation of the atomic force microscope (AFM) probe and measurement of its response at multiple frequencies. This paper reports the design, fabrication, and evaluation of AFM probes with a specified set of torsional eigen-frequencies that facilitate enhancement of sensitivity in multifrequency AFM. A general approach is proposed to design the probes, which includes the design of their generic geometry, adoption of a simple lumped-parameter model, guidelines for determination of the initial dimensions, and an iterative scheme to obtain a probe with the specified eigen-frequencies. The proposed approach is employed to design a harmonic probe wherein the second and the third eigen-frequencies are the corresponding harmonics of the first eigen-frequency. The probe is subsequently fabricated and evaluated. The experimentally evaluated eigen-frequencies and associated mode shapes are shown to closely match the theoretical results. Finally, a simulation study is performed to demonstrate significant improvements in sensitivity to the second-and the third-harmonic spectral components of the tip-sample interaction force with the harmonic probe compared to that of a conventional probe.

Plants, herbivores and parasitoids affect each other directly and indirectly; however, feedback effects mediated by host plant traits have rarely been demonstrated in these tritrophic interactions. Brood-site pollination mutualisms (e.g. those involving figs and fig wasps) represent specialised tritrophic communities where the progeny of mutualistic pollinators and of non-mutualistic gallers (both herbivores) together with that of their parasitoids develop within enclosed inflorescences called syconia (hence termed brood-sites or microcosms). Plant reproductive phenology (which affects temporal brood-site availability) and inflorescence size (representing brood-site size) are plant traits that could affect reproductive resources, and hence relationships between trees, pollinators and non-pollinating wasps. Analysing wasp and seed contents of syconia, we examined direct, indirect, trophic and non-trophic relationships within the interaction web of the fig-fig wasp community of Ficus racemosa in the context of brood site size and availability. We demonstrate that in addition to direct resource competition and predator-prey (host-parasitoid) interactions, these communities display exploitative or apparent competition and trait-mediated indirect interactions. Inflorescence size and plant reproductive phenology impacted plant-herbivore and plant-parasitoid associations. These plant traits also influenced herbivore-herbivore and herbivore-parasitoid relationships via indirect effects. Most importantly, we found a reciprocal effect between within-tree reproductive asynchrony and fig wasp progeny abundances per syconium that drives a positive feedback cycle within the system. The impact of a multitrophic feedback cycle within a community built around a mutualistic core highlights the need for a holistic view of plant-herbivore-parasitoid interactions in the community ecology of mutualisms.
