This research paper presents the first results on the protein adsorption and release kinetics and in vitro biodegradability of cryogenically cured hydroxyapatite-gelatin based micro/macroporous scaffolds (CHAMPS). While the adsorption and release of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein exhibits steady state behavior over an incubation period of up to 10 days, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis importantly confirms the absence of any change in the secondary structure of BSA proteins due to interaction with the CHAMPS scaffold. The compression properties of the CHAMPS scaffold with interconnected porosity (pore size similar to 50-200 mm) is characterized by a non-linear stress-strain response with a strength close to 5 MPa and a maximum strain of up to 24%. The slow but systematic increase in weight loss over a period of 7 days as well as apatite layer formation indicates its good bioactivity. The extensive micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis establishes cancellous bone-like highly interconnected and complex porous architecture of the CHAMPS scaffold. Importantly, the excellent adsorption (up to 50%) and release (up to 60% of adsorbed protein) of BSA has been uniquely attributed to the inherent porous microstructure of the CHAMPS scaffold. Overall, the present study provides an assessment of the interaction of protein with the gelatin-hydroxyapatite macroporous scaffold in vitro, as well as reporting for the first time the efficacy of such scaffolds to release 60% of BSA loaded onto the scaffold in vitro, which is significantly higher than earlier literature reports.

We study absorption spectra and two photon absorption coefficient of expanded porphyrins (EPs) by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We employ the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian which includes long-range electron-electron interactions. We find that, in the 4n+2 EPs, there are two prominent low-lying one-photon excitations, while in 4n EPs, there is only one such excitation. We also find that 4n+2 EPs have large two-photon absorption cross sections compared to 4n EPs. The charge density rearrangement in the one-photon excited state is mostly at the pyrrole nitrogen site and at the meso carbon sites. In the two-photon states, the charge density rearrangement occurs mostly at the aza-ring sites. In the one-photon state, the C-C bond length in aza rings shows a tendency to become uniform. In the two-photon state, the bond distortions are on C-N bonds of the pyrrole ring and the adjoining C-C bonds which connect the pyrrole ring to the aza or meso carbon sites.

Bacterial surface polymers play a major role in the adhesion of bacterial cells to solid surfaces. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are essential constituents of the cell walls of almost all Gram-negative bacteria. This paper reports the results of the investigations on the role of outer membrane exopolymers (LPS) of the chemolithotroph, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, in adsorption of the cells onto pyrite and chalcopyrite. Optimization of EDTA treatment for removal of LPS from cell surface and the surface characterization of EDTA-treated cells are outlined. There was no change in cell morphology or loss in cell motility upon treatment with upto 0.04 mM EDTA for 1 h. Partial removal of LPS by EDTA treatment resulted in reduced adsorption of the cells on both pyrite and chalcopyrite. The protein profile of the EDTA-extractable fraction showed presence of certain outer membrane proteins indicating that EDTA treatment results in temporary gaps in the outer membrane. Also, specificity towards pyrite compared to chalcopyrite that was exhibited by untreated cells was lost when their exopolymer layers were stripped off, which could be attributed to the role of outer membrane proteins in the mineral-specificity exhibited by the bacteria. Experimental adsorption data of difluoromethane (HFC-32) on activated carbon in powder (ACP) and fiber (ACF) forms over a range of (25 to 75) degrees C and pressures up to 1400 kPa are reported. The data are fitted to Toth and Dubinin-Astakhov isotherm equations. Adsorbed phase volume is derived from the data. Isosteric heats of adsorption are extracted, and their dependence on relative loading and relative pressure is analyzed.

For the purpose of water purification, novel and low-cost adsorbents which are promising replacements for activated carbon are being actively pursued. However, a single-phase material that adsorbs both cationic and anionic species remains elusive. Hence, a low-cost, multiphase adsorbent bed that purifies water containing both anionic and cationic pollutants is a desirable alternative. We choose anionic (Congo red, Orange G) and cationic (methylene blue, malachite green) dyes as model pollutants. These dyes are chosen since they are widely found in effluents from textile, leather, fishery, and pharmaceutical industries, and their carcinogenic, mutagenic, genotoxic, and cytotoxic impact on mammalian cells is well-established. We show that ZnO, (Zn0.24Cu0.76)O and cobalt ferrite based multiphase fixed adsorbent bed efficiently adsorbs model anionic (Congo red, Orange G) and cationic (methylene blue and malachite green) pollutants, and their complex mixtures. All adsorbent phases are synthesized using room-temperature, high-yield (similar to 96-100%), green chemical processes. The nanoadsorbents are characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The constituent nanophases are deliberately chosen to be beyond 50 nm, in order to avoid the nanotoxic size regime of oxides. Adsorption characteristics of each of the phases are examined. Isotherm based analysis shows that adsorption is both spontaneous and highly favorable. zeta potential measurements indicate that electrostatic interactions are the primary driving force for the observed adsorption behavior. The isotherms obtained are best described using a composite Langmuir-Freundlich model. Pseudo-first-order, rapid kinetics is observed (with adsorption rate constants as high as 0.1-0.2 min(-1) in some cases). Film diffusion is shown to be the primary mechanism of adsorption.

In recent years new emphasis has been placed on problems of the environmental aspects of waste disposal, especially investigating alternatives to landfill, sea dumping and incineration. There is also a strong emphasis on clean, economic and efficient processes for electric power generation. These two topics may at first appear unrelated. Nevertheless, the technological advances are now such that a solution to both can be combined in a novel approach to power generation based on waste-derived fuels, including refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and sludge power (SP) by utilising a slagging gasifier and advance fuel technology (AFT). The most appropriate gasification technique for such waste utilisation is the British Gas/Lurgi (BGL) high pressure, fixed bed slagging gasifier where operation on a range of feedstocks has been well-documented. This gasifier is particularly amenable to briquette fuel feeding and, operating in an integrated gasification combined cycle mode (IGCC), is particularly advantageous. Here, the author details how this technology has been applied to Britain's first AFT-IGCC Power Station which is now under development at Fife Energy Ltd., in Scotland, the former British Gas Westfield Development Centre.

The paper analyses the results of experiments on the propagation rate in a fuel bed under gasification conditions in a co-current reactor configuration. Experiments using wood chips with different values of moisture content have been conducted under gasification conditions. The influence of air mass flux on the propagation rate, peak temperature and gas quality is investigated. It is observed from the experiments that the flame front propagation rate initially increases as the air mass flux increased, reaching a peak propagation rate, and further increase in the air mass flux results in a decrease in the propagation rate. However, the bed movement increases with the increase in air mass flux. The experimental results provide an understanding on influence of the fuel properties on propagation front. The surface area per unit volume of the particles in the packed bed plays an important role in the propagation rate. It has been argued that the flaming pyrolysis contributes towards the flame propagation as opposed to the overall combustion process in a packed bed. The calorific value of the producer gas generated is nearly the same over the entire range of air mass flux for bone-dry and 10% moist wood. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The study presents a 3-year time series data on dissolved trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) in a monsoon-dominated river basin, the Nethravati River in tropical Southwestern India. The river basin lies on the metamorphic transition boundary which separates the Peninsular Gneiss and Southern Granulitic province belonging to Archean and Tertiary-Quaternary period (Western Dharwar Craton). The basin lithology is mainly composed of granite gneiss, charnockite and metasediment. This study highlights the importance of time series data for better estimation of metal fluxes and to understand the geochemical behaviour of metals in a river basin. The dissolved trace elements show seasonality in the river water metal concentrations forming two distinct groups of metals. First group is composed of heavy metals and minor elements that show higher concentrations during dry season and lesser concentrations during the monsoon season. Second group is composed of metals belonging to lanthanides and actinides with higher concentration in the monsoon and lower concentrations during the dry season. Although the metal concentration of both the groups appears to be controlled by the discharge, there are important biogeochemical processes affecting their concentration. This includes redox reactions (for Fe, Mn, As, Mo, Ba and Ce) and pH-mediated adsorption/desorption reactions (for Ni, Co, Cr, Cu and REEs). The abundance of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides as a result of redox processes could be driving the geochemical redistribution of metals in the river water. There is a Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) at different time periods, both negative and positive, in case of dissolved phase, whereas there is positive anomaly in the particulate and bed sediments. The Ce anomaly correlates with the variations in the dissolved oxygen indicating the redistribution of Ce between particulate and dissolved phase under acidic to neutral pH and lower concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. Unlike other tropical and major world rivers, the effect of organic complexation on metal variability is negligible in the Nethravati River water.

Using van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations, we explore the possibility of engineering the local structure and morphology of high-surface-area graphene-derived materials to improve the uptake of methane and carbon dioxide for gas storage and sensing. We test the sensitivity of the gas adsorption energy to the introduction of native point defects, curvature, and the application of strain. The binding energy at topological point defect sites is inversely correlated with the number of missing carbon atoms, causing Stone-Wales defects to show the largest enhancement with respect to pristine graphene (similar to 20%). Improvements of similar magnitude are observed at concavely curved surfaces in buckled graphene sheets under compressive strain, whereas tensile strain tends to weaken gas binding. Trends for CO2 and CH4 are, similar, although CO2 binding is generally stronger by similar to 4 to 5 kJ mol(-1). However, the differential between the adsorption of CO2 and CH4 is much higher on folded graphene sheets and at concave curvatures; this could possibly be leveraged for CH4/CO2 flow separation and gasselective sensors.

The paper addresses the effect of particle size on tar generation in a fixed bed gasification system. Pyrolysis, a diffusion limited process, depends on the heating rate and the surface area of the particle influencing the release of the volatile fraction leaving behind residual char. The flaming time has been estimated for different biomass samples. It is found that the flaming time for wood flakes is almost one fourth than that of coconut shells for same equivalent diameter fuel samples. The particle density of the coconut shell is more than twice that of wood spheres, and almost four times compared with wood flakes; having a significant influence on the flaming time. The ratio of the particle surface area to that of an equivalent diameter is nearly two times higher for flakes compared with wood pieces. Accounting for the density effect, on normalizing with density of the particle, the flaming rate is double in the case of wood flakes or coconut shells compared with the wood sphere for an equivalent diameter. This is due to increased surface area per unit volume of the particle. Experiments are conducted on estimation of tar content in the raw gas for wood flakes and standard wood pieces. It is observed that the tar level in the raw gas is about 80% higher in the case of wood flakes compared with wood pieces. The analysis suggests that the time for pyrolysis is lower with a higher surface area particle and is subjected to fast pyrolysis process resulting in higher tar fraction with low char yield. Increased residence time with staged air flow has a better control on residence time and lower tar in the raw gas. (C) 2014 International Energy Initiative. Published by Elsevier Inc. Adsorption experiments of mixtures of long chain alkanes into silicalite under liquid phase conditions show selectivity inversion and azeotrope formation. These effects are due to the subtle interplay between the size of the adsorbed molecules and pore topology of the adsorbent. In this study, the selective uptake of lighter component during liquid phase adsorption of C/C and C/C n-alkane binary mixtures in the zeolite silicalite is understood through configurational bias grand-canonical Monte Carlo molecular simulation technique and a coarse-grained siting analysis. The simulations are conducted under conditions of low and intermediate levels of loading. The siting pattern of the adsorbates inside the zeolite pores explain the selectivity as seen in experiments.

The development of a viable adsorbed natural gas onboard fuel system involves synthesizing materials that meet specific storage target requirements. We assess the impact on natural gas storage due to intermediate processes involved in taking a laboratory powder sample to an onboard packed or adsorbent bed module. We illustrate that reporting the V/V (volume of gas/volume of container) capacities based on powder adsorption data without accounting for losses due to pelletization and bed porosity, grossly overestimates the working storage capacity for a given material. Using data typically found for adsorbent materials that are carbon and MOF based materials, we show that in order to meet the Department of Energy targets of 180 V/V (equivalent STP) loading at 3.5 MPa and 298 K at the onboard packed bed level, the volumetric capacity of the pelletized sample should be at least 245 V/V and the corresponding gravimetric loading varies from 0.175 to 0.38 kg/kg for pellet densities ranging from 461.5 to 1,000 . With recent revision of the DOE target to 263 V/V at the onboard packed bed level, the volumetric loadings for the pelletized sample should be about 373 V/V.

Simulations using Ansys Fluent 6.3.26 have been performed to look into the adsorption characteristics of a single silica gel particle exposed to saturated humid air streams at Re=108 & 216 and temperature of 300K. The adsorption of the particle has been modeled as a source term in the species and the energy equations using a Linear Driving Force (LDF) equation. The interdependence of the thermal and the water vapor concentration field has been analysed. This work is intended to aid in understanding the adsorption effects in silica gel beds and in their efficient design. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Cryosorption pump is the only possible device to pump helium, hydrogen and its isotopes in fusion environment, such as high magnetic field and high plasma temperatures. Activated carbons are known to be the most suitable adsorbent in the development of cryosorption pumps. For this purpose, the data of adsorption characteristics of activated carbons in the temperature range 4.5 K to 77 K are needed, but are not available in the literature. For obtaining the above data, a commercial micro pore analyzer operating at 77 K has been integrated with a two stage GM cryocooler, which enables the cooling of the sample temperature down to 4.5 K. A heat switch mounted between the second stage cold head and the sample chamber helps to raise the sample chamber temperature to 77 K without affecting the performance of the cryocooler. The detailed description of this system is presented elsewhere. This paper presents the results of experimental studies of adsorption isotherms measured on different types of activated carbons in the form of granules, globules, flake knitted and non-woven types in the temperature range 4.5 K to 10 K using Helium gas as the adsorbate. The above results are analyzed to obtain the pore size distributions and surface areas of the activated carbons. The effect of adhesive used for bonding the activated carbons to the panels is also studied. These results will be useful to arrive at the right choice of activated carbon to be used for the development of cryosorption pumps.

The present study simulates a two-stage silica gel + water adsorption desalination (AD) and chiller system. The adsorber system thermally compresses the low pressure steam generated in the evaporator to the condenser pressure in two stages. Unlike a standalone adsorption chiller unit which operates in a closed cycle the present system is an open cycle wherein the condensed desalinated water is not fed back to the evaporator. The mathematical relations formulated in the current study are based on conservation of mass and energy along with isotherm relation and kinetics for RD-type silica gel + water pair. Various constitutive relations for each component namely the evaporator, adsorber and condenser are integrated in the model. The dynamics of heat exchanger are modeled using LMTD method, and LDF model is used to predict the dynamic characteristic of the adsorber bed. The system performance indicators namely, specific cooling capacity (SCC), specific daily water production (SDWP) and coefficient of performance (COP) are used as objective functions to optimize the system. The novelty of the present work is in introduction of inter-stage pressure as a new parameter for optimizing the two-stage operation of AD chiller system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
