Micro-Raman studies are conducted on as-quenched and annealed Ge15Te80 -_xIn5Agx glasses to probe the structural network and its evolution with composition. These studies reveal the presence of tetrahedral GeTe4 structural units in as-quenched samples. Specific signatures of the intermediate phase (IP) are observed in the composition dependence of Raman frequencies and corresponding intensities of different modes in the composition range, 8 <= x <= 16. In addition, the Raman peak positions are found to shift with silver doping. Apart from the Raman results, the compositional dependence of density, molar volume and thermal diffusivity, observed in the present study, confirms the presence of the intermediate phase. In thermally annealed samples, a unique variation of Raman wave-numbers in the intermediate region is observed due to the retention of some of the local structure even after the sample is crystallized. The observed Raman peaks are attributed to crystalline tellurium and silver lattice vibrational modes. Based on our present and earlier studies, we propose the occurrence of three thresholds in Ge15Te80 - xIn5Agx glasses, namely percolation of rigidity, percolation of stress and the onset of chemical phase separation on a nanoscale at 8%, 16% and 20% of silver concentration respectively. Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based molecular semiconductors have emerged as promising materials for high performance active layers in organic solar cells. It is imperative to comprehend the origin of such a property by investigating the fundamental structure property correlation. In this report we have investigated the role of the donor group in DPP based donor-acceptor- donor (D-A-D) structure to govern the solid state, photophysical and electrochemical properties. We have prepared three derivatives of DPP with varying strengths of the donor groups, such as phenyl (PDPP-Hex), thiophene (TDPP-Hex) and selenophene (SeDPP-Hex). The influence of the donor units on the solid state packing was studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysical, electrochemical and density functional theory ( DFT) results were combined to elucidate the structural and electronic properties of three DPP derivatives. We found that these DPP derivatives crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c and show herringbone packing in the crystal lattice. The derivatives exhibit weak p-p stacking interactions as two neighboring molecules slip away from each other with varied torsional angles at the donor units. The high torsional angle of 32 degrees ( PDPP-Hex) between the phenyl and lactam ring results in weak intramolecular interactions between the donor and acceptor, while TDPP-Hex and SeDPP-Hex show lower torsional angles of 9 degrees and 12 degrees with a strong overlap between the donor and acceptor units. The photophysical properties reveal that PDPP-Hex exhibits a high Stokes shift of 0.32 eV and SeDPP- Hex shows a high molar absorption co-efficient of 33 600 L mol -1 1 cm -1 1 with a low band gap of similar to 2.2 eV. The electrochemical studies of SeDPP- Hex indicate the pronounced effect of selenium in stabilizing the LUMO energy levels and this further emphasizes the importance of chalcogens in developing new n-type organic semiconductors for optoelectronic devices.

A controllable synthesis of phase pure wurtzite (WZ) ZnS nanostructures has been reported in this work at a low temperature of similar to 220 degrees C using ethylenediamine as the soft template and by varying the molar concentration of zinc to sulphur precursors as well as by using different precursors. A significant reduction in the formation temperature required for the synthesis of phase pure WZ ZnS has been observed. A strong correlation has been observed between the morphology of the synthesized ZnS nanostructures and the precursors used during synthesis. It has been found from Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) image analyses that the morphology of the ZnS nanocrystals changes from a block-like to a belt-like structure having an average length of similar to 450 nm when the molar ratio of zinc to sulphur source is increased from 1 : 1 to 1 : 3. An oriented attachment (OA) growth mechanism has been used to explain the observed shape evolution of the synthesized nanostructures. The synthesized nanostructures have been characterized by the X-ray diffraction technique as well as by UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy. The as-synthesized nanobelts exhibit defect related visible PL emission. On isochronal annealing of the nanobelts in air in the temperature range of 100-600 degrees C, it has been found that white light emission with a Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage 1931 (CIE) chromaticity coordinate of (0.30, 0.34), close to that of white light (0.33, 0.33), can be obtained from the ZnO nanostructures obtained at an annealing temperature of 600 degrees C. UV light driven degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye aqueous solution has also been demonstrated using as-synthesized nanobelts and similar to 98% dye degradation has been observed within only 40 min of light irradiation. The synthesized nanobelts with visible light emission and having dye degradation activity can be used effectively in future optoelectronic devices and in water purification for cleaning of dyes.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp), a primary constituent of human bone, is usually nonstoichiometric with varying Ca/P molar ratios, with the well-known fact that Ca deficiency can cause marked reductions in its mechanical properties. To gain insights into the mechanism of this degradation, we employ first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and determine the effects of Ca deficiency on structure, vibrational, and elastic properties of HAp. Our simulation results confirm a considerable reduction in the elastic constants of HAp due to Ca deficiency, which was experimentally reported earlier. Stress-induced transformation of the Ca-deficient defected structure into a metastable state upon the application of stress could be a reason for this. Local structural stability of HAp and Ca-deficient HAp structures is assessed with full phonon dispersion studies. Further, specific signatures in the computed vibrational spectra for Ca deficiency in HAp can be utilized in experimental characterization of different types of defected HAp.

A variety of aliphatic and aromatic ketoaldehydes were reduced to the corresponding ketoalcohols with a mixture of sodium borohydride (1.2 equivalents) and sodium carbonate (sixfold molar excess) in water. Reactions were performed at room temperatures over (typically) 2 h, and yields of isolated products generally ranged from 70% to 85%. A biscarbonate-borane complex, (BH3)(2)CO2](2-) 2Na(+), possibly formed from the reagent mixture, is likely the active reductant. The moderated reactivity of this acylborane species would explain the chemoselectivity observed in the reactions. The readily available reagents and the mild aqueous conditions make for ease of operation and environmental compatibility, and make a useful addition to available methodology.

Three copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)] (2), and Cu-5(N-3)(10)(L-1)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine] have been synthesized using lower molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligand with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of the complexes 1 and 2 contains Cu-4(II) building blocks; however, they have distinct basic and overall structures due to a small change in the bridging mode of the peripheral pair of copper atoms in the linear tetranudear structures. Interestingly, these changes are the result of changing the solvent system (MeOH/H2O to EtOH/H2O) used for the synthesis, without changing the proportions of the components (metal to ligand ratio 2:1). Using even lower proportions of the ligand, another unique complex was isolated with Cu-5(II) building units, forming a two-dimensional complex (3). Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic (very weak) and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional, and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1 and 2 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

An electrochemical lead ion sensor has been developed by modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE) using polypyrrole functionalized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA-PPy) containing carboxyl group. The electrochemical response of Pb2+ ion on the IDA-PPy modified CPE has been evaluated and the controling parameters have been optimized using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The IDA-PPy modified CPE shows a linear correlation for Pb2+ concentrations in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-9) M and the lower detection limit of Pb2+ has been found to be 9.6 x 10(-9) M concentration. Other tested metal ions, namely Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+, do not exhibit any voltammetric stripping response below 1 x 10(-7) M concentration. However, the Pb2+ response is affected in the presence of molar equivalents or higher concentrations of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ ions in binary systems with Pb2+, consequent to their ability to bind with iminodiacetic acid, while Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ do not interfere at all. A good correlation has been observed between the lead concentrations as analyzed by DPASV using IDA-PPy modified CPE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for a lead containing industrial effluent sample. Densification mechanisms involved during reactive hot pressing (RHP) of zirconium carbide (ZrC) have been studied. RHP has been carried out using zirconium (Zr) and graphite (C) powders in the molar ratios 1:0.5, 1:0.67, 1:0.8, and 1:1 at 40MPa, 800 degrees C-1200 degrees C for different durations. The volume fractions of phases formed, including porosity, are determined from the measured density and from Rietveld analysis. Increased densification with an increasing nonstoichiometry in carbon has been observed. Microstructural and X-ray diffraction observations coupled with the predictions of a model based on the constitutive laws governing plastic flow of zirconium suggest that the better densification of nonstoichiometric compositions arise from the higher amount of starting Zr and also the longer duration of its availability for plastic flow during RHP. Volume shrinkage due to reaction between Zr and C and the gradual elimination of the soft metal phase limit the final density achievable. Based on these observations, a two-step RHP carried out at 800 degrees C and 1200 degrees C leads to a better densification than a single RHP at 1200 degrees C.

Gasification is an energy transformation process in which solid fuel undergoes thermochemical conversion to produce gaseous fuel, and the two most important criteria involved in such process to evaluate the performance, economics and sustainability of the technology are: the total available energy (exergy) and the energy conserved (energy efficiency). Current study focuses on the energy and exergy analysis of the oxy-steam gasification and comparing with air gasification to optimize the H-2 yield, efficiency and syngas energy density. Casuarina wood is used as a fuel, and mixture of oxygen and steam in different proportion and amount is used as a gasifying media. The results are analysed with respect to varying equivalence ratio and steam to biomass ratio (SBR). Elemental mass balance technique is employed to ensure the validity of results. First and second law thermodynamic analysis is used towards time evaluation of energy and exergy analysis. Different component of energy input and output has been studied carefully to understand the influence of varying SBR on the availability of energy and irreversibility in the system to minimize the losses with change in input parameters for optimum performance. The energy and exergy losses (irreversibility) for oxy-steam gasification system are compared with the results of air gasification, and losses are found to be lower in oxy-steam thermal conversion; which has been argued and reasoned due to the presence of N-2 in the air-gasification. The maximum exergy efficiency of 85% with energy efficiency of 82% is achieved at SBR of 0.75 on the molar basis. It has been observed that increase in SBR results in lower exergy and energy efficiency, and it is argued to be due to the high energy input in steam generation and subsequent losses in the form of physical exergy of steam in the product gas, which alone accounts for over 18% in exergy input and 8.5% in exergy of product gas at SBR of 2.7. Carbon boundary point (CBP), is identified at the SBR of 1.5, and water gas shift (WGS) reaction plays a crucial role in H-2 enrichment after carbon boundary point (CBP) is reached. Effects of SBR and CBP on the H-2/CO ratio is analysed and discussed from the perspective of energy as well as the reaction chemistry. Energy density of syngas and energy efficiency is favoured at lower SBR but higher SBR favours H-2 rich gas at the expense of efficiency. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with average sizes of 14, 9 and 6 nm were synthesised by the chemical co-precipitation technique. Average particle sizes were varied by changing the chitosan surfactant to precursor molar ratio in the reaction mixture. Transmission electron microscopy images revealed a faceted and irregular morphology for the as-synthesised nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements revealed a ferromagnetic nature for the 14 and 9 nm particles and a superparamagnetic nature for the 6 nm particles. An increase in saturation magnetisation with increasing particle size was noted. Relaxivity measurements were carried out to determine T-2 value as a function of particle size using nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The relaxivity coefficient increased with decrease in particle size and decrease in the saturation magnetisation value. The observed trend in the change of relaxivity value with particle size was attributed to the faceted nature of as-synthesised nanoparticles. Faceted morphology results in the creation of high gradient of magnetic field in the regions adjacent to the facet edges increasing the relaxivity value. The effect of edges in increasing the relaxivity value increases with decrease in the particle size because of an increase in the total number of edges per particle dispersion.

The static and dynamic pressure concentration isotherms (PCIs) of MmNi(5-x)Al(x). (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8) hydrides were measured at different temperatures using volumetric method. The effect of Al substitution on PCI and thermodynamic properties were studied. The plateau pressure and maximum hydrogen storage capacity decreased with Al content whereas reaction enthalpy increased. The plateau pressure, plateau slope and hysteresis effect was observed more for dynamic PCIs compared to static PCIs. Different mathematical models used for metal hydride-based thermodynamic devices simulation are compared to select suitable model for static and dynamic PCI simulation of MmNi(5)-based hydrides. Few important physical coefficients (partial molar volume, reaction enthalpy, reaction entropy, etc.) useful for development of thermodynamic devices were estimated. A relation has been proposed to correlate aluminium content and physical coefficients for the prediction of unknown PCI. The simulated and experimental PCIs were found matching closely for both static and dynamic conditions. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of size selective monodispersed nanoparticles particularly intermetallic with well-defined compositions represents a challenge. This paper presents a way for the synthesis of intermetallic AuCu nanoparticles as a model system. We show that reduction of Au and Cu precursors is sensitive to the ratio of total molar concentrations of surfactant to metal precursors. A careful design of experiments to understand the kinetics of the reduction process reveals initial formation of seed nanoparticles of pure Au. Reduction of Cu occurs on the surface of the seed followed by diffusion to yield AuCu. This understanding allows us to develop a two step synthesis where the precise size controlled seed of Au nanoparticles produced in the first step is used in the second step reaction mixture as an Au precursor to allow deposition and interdiffusion of Cu that yields size selected AuCu intermetallics of sub 10 nm sizes.

Two novel triads based on a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) central core and two 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) units attached by thiophene rings have been synthesised having high molar extinction coefficients. These triads were characterised and used as donor materials in small molecule, solution processable organic solar cells. Both triads were blended with PC71BM as an acceptor in different ratios by wt% and their photovoltaic properties were studied. For both the triads a modest photovoltaic performance was observed, having an efficiency of 0.65%. Moreover, in order to understand the ground and excited state properties and vertical absorption profile of DPP and BODIPY units within the triads, theoretical DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed.

Iron nanostructures with morphology ranging from discrete nanoparticles to nearly monodisperse hierarchical nanostructures have been successfully synthesized using solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. Such a morphological evolution was realized by tuning the molar ratio of ligand to metal. Surface energy minimization in confluence with strong magnetic interactions and ligand-based stabilization results in the formation of nanospheres of iron. The as-prepared amorphous iron nanostructures exhibit remarkably high coercivity in comparison to the discrete nanoparticles and bulk counterpart. Annealing the as-prepared amorphous Fe nanostructures under anaerobic conditions affords air-stable carbon-encapsulated Fe(0) and Fe3C nanostructures with retention of the morphology. The resulting nanostructures were thoroughly analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. TGA brought out that Fe3C nanostructures are more robust toward oxidation than those of a-Fe. Finally, detailed magnetic studies were carried out by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer and it was found that the magnetic properties remain conserved even upon exposure of the annealed samples to ambient conditions for months.

The performance of molecular materials in optoelectronic devices critically depends upon their electronic properties and solid-state structure. In this report, we have synthesized sulfur and selenium based (T4BT and T4BSe) donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) organic derivatives in order to understand the structure-property correlation in organic semiconductors by selectively tuning the chalcogen atom. The photophysical properties exhibit a significant alteration upon varying a single atom in the molecular structure. A joint theoretical and experimental investigation suggests that replacing sulfur with selenium significantly reduces the band gap and molar absorption coefficient because of lower electronegativity and ionization potential of selenium. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed differences in their solid-state packing and intermolecular interactions. Subsequently, difference in the solid-state packing results variation in self-assembly. Micorstructural changes within these materials are correlated to their electrical resistance variation, investigated by conducting probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements. These results provide useful guidelines to understand the fundamental properties of D-A-D materials prepared by atomistic modulation.
