A simple method to study the air bubble dynamics and to burst the air bubbles formed on the electrode– electrolyte interface in a parallel gate electrode fluidic channel is demonstrated. Upon application of a voltage across the electrodes, volume of water contained between them begins to electrolyzing depending on the conductivity, as well as it boils due to heating effect. This results in bubble formation within. These bubbles grow in radius with higher potential difference applied across the electrodes. As an approach towards removing these bubbles, an alternating current is applied at low potential difference of a 5 volts and high frequency at few megahertz. The alternating electric field had a heating effect on the bubbles where the energy input due to current heats up water and bursts the bubble. The bubbles of size up to 480μm were burst at 2500 V/m using this approach.

Pyridoxal kinase (PdxK; EC 2.7.1.35) belongs to the phosphotransferase family of enzymes and catalyzes the conversion of the three active forms of vitamin B-6, pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine, to their phosphorylated forms and thereby plays a key role in pyridoxal 5 `-phosphate salvage. In the present study, pyridoxal kinase from Salmonella typhimurium was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified using Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and crystallized. X-ray diffraction data were collected to 2.6 angstrom resolution at 100 K. The crystal belonged to the primitive orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unitcell parameters a = 65.11, b = 72.89, c = 107.52 angstrom. The data quality obtained by routine processing was poor owing to the presence of strong diffraction rings caused by a polycrystalline material of an unknown small molecule in all oscillation images. Excluding the reflections close to powder/polycrystalline rings provided data of sufficient quality for structure determination. A preliminary structure solution has been obtained by molecular replacement with the Phaser program in the CCP4 suite using E. coli pyridoxal kinase (PDB entry 2ddm) as the phasing model. Further refinement and analysis of the structure are likely to provide valuable insights into catalysis by pyridoxal kinases.

This paper reports optical, photo-acoustic and electrical switching investigations of GeS2 amorphous thin films of different thicknesses, deposited on glass substrates in vacuum. The Tauc parameter (B (1/2)) and Urbach energy (E (U)) have been determined from the transmittance spectra, to understand the changes in structural disorder; it is found that B (1/2) increases whereas E (U) decreases as the thickness of the films increases. Based on the results, it is suggested that bond re-arrangement, i.e. transformation from homopolar bonds to heteropolar bonds, takes place with increase in thickness. The thermal diffusivity values of GeS2 thin films also show the presence of a chemically ordered network in the GeS2 thin films. Further, it is found that these films exhibit memory-type electrical switching. The observed variation in the switching voltages has been understood on the basis of increase in chemical order.

Natural multispecies acoustic choruses such as the dusk chorus of a tropical rain forest consist of simultaneously signalling individuals of different species whose calls travel through a common shared medium before reaching their `intended' receivers. This causes masking interference between signals and impedes signal detection, recognition and localization. The levels of acoustic overlap depend on a number of factors, including call structure, intensity, habitat-dependent signal attenuation and receiver tuning. In addition, acoustic overlaps should also depend on caller density and the species composition of choruses, including relative and absolute abundance of the different calling species. In this study, we used simulations to examine the effects of chorus species relative abundance and caller density on the levels of effective heterospecific acoustic overlap in multispecies choruses composed of the calls of five species of crickets and katydids that share the understorey of a rain forest in southern India. We found that on average species-even choruses resulted in higher levels of effective heterospecific acoustic overlap than choruses with strong dominance structures. This effect was found consistently across dominance levels ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 for larger choruses of forty individuals. For smaller choruses of twenty individuals, the effect was seen consistently for dominance levels of 0.6 and 0.8 but not 0.4. Effective acoustic overlap (EAO) increased with caller density but the manner and extent of increase depended both on the species' call structure and the acoustic context provided by the composition scenario. The Phaloria sp. experienced very low levels of EAO and was highly buffered to changes in acoustic context whereas other species experienced high FAO across contexts or were poorly buffered. These differences were not simply predictable from call structures. These simulation-based findings may have important implications for acoustic biodiversity monitoring and for the study of acoustic masking interference in natural environments. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Workplace noise has become one of the major issues in industry not only because of workers’ health but also due to safety. Electric motors, particularly, inverter fed induction motors emit objectionably high levels of noise. This has led to the emergence of a research area, concerned with measurement and mitigation of the acoustic noise. This paper presents a lowcost option for measurement and spectral analysis of acoustic noise emitted by electric motors. The system consists of an electret microphone, amplifier and filter. It makes use of the windows sound card and associated software for data acquisition and analysis. The measurement system is calibrated using a professional sound level meter. Acoustic noise measurements are made on an induction motor drive using the proposed system as per relevant international standards. These measurements are seen to match closely with those of a professional meter.

In this paper, a low-complexity algorithm SAGE-USL is presented for 3-dimensional (3-D) localization of multiple acoustic sources in a shallow ocean with non-Gaussian ambient noise, using a vertical and a horizontal linear array of sensors. In the proposed method, noise is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. Initial estimates of the unknown parameters (source coordinates, signal waveforms and noise parameters) are obtained by known/conventional methods, and a generalized expectation maximization algorithm is used to update the initial estimates iteratively. Simulation results indicate that convergence is reached in a small number of (<= 10) iterations. Initialization requires one 2-D search and one 1-D search, and the iterative updates require a sequence of 1-D searches. Therefore the computational complexity of the SAGE-USL algorithm is lower than that of conventional techniques such as 3-D MUSIC by several orders of magnitude. We also derive the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) for 3-D localization of multiple sources in a range-independent ocean. Simulation results are presented to show that the root-mean-square localization errors of SAGE-USL are close to the corresponding CRBs and significantly lower than those of 3-D MUSIC. This report addresses the assessment of variation in elastic property of soft biological tissues non-invasively using laser speckle contrast measurement. The experimental as well as the numerical (Monte-Carlo simulation) studies are carried out. In this an intense acoustic burst of ultrasound (an acoustic pulse with high power within standard safety limits), instead of continuous wave, is employed to induce large modulation of the tissue materials in the ultrasound insonified region of interest (ROI) and it results to enhance the strength of the ultrasound modulated optical signal in ultrasound modulated optical tomography (UMOT) system. The intensity fluctuation of speckle patterns formed by interference of light scattered (while traversing through tissue medium) is characterized by the motion of scattering sites. The displacement of scattering particles is inversely related to the elastic property of the tissue. We study the feasibility of laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) technique to reconstruct a map of the elastic property of a soft tissue-mimicking phantom. We employ source synchronized parallel speckle detection scheme to (experimentally) measure the speckle contrast from the light traversing through ultrasound (US) insonified tissue-mimicking phantom. The measured relative image contrast (the ratio of the difference of the maximum and the minimum values to the maximum value) for intense acoustic burst is 86.44 % in comparison to 67.28 % for continuous wave excitation of ultrasound. We also present 1-D and 2-D image of speckle contrast which is the representative of elastic property distribution.

Sessile droplets on a vibrating substrate are investigated focusing on axisymmetric oscillations with pinned contact line. Proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to identify the different modes of droplet shape oscillation and quantitatively assess the droplet oscillation and spectral response. We offer the first experimental evidence for the analogy of an oscillating sessile droplet with a non-linear spring mass damper system. The qualitative and quantitative agreement of amplitude response and phase response curves and limit cycles of the model dynamical system with that observed experimentally suggest that the bulk oscillations in the fundamental mode of a sessile droplet can be very well modeled by a Duffing oscillator with a hard spring, especially near the resonance. The red shift of the resonance peak with an increase in the glycerol concentration is clearly evidenced by both the experimental and predicted amplitude response curves. The influence of various operational parameters such as excitation frequency and amplitude and fluid properties on the droplet oscillation characteristics is adequately captured by the model. This article reports on analysis of fracture processes in reinforced concrete (RC) beams with acoustic emission (AE) technique. An emphasis was given to study the effect of loading rate on variation in AE based b-values with the development of cracks in RC structures. RC beams of length 3.2 m were tested under load control at a rate of 4 kN/s, 5 kN/s and 6 kN/s and the b-value analysis available in seismology was used to study the fracture process in RC structures. Moreover, the b-value is related to the strain in steel to assess the damage state. It is observed that when the loading rate is higher, quick cracking development lead to rapid fluctuations and drops in the b-values. Also it is observed that concrete behaves relatively more brittle at higher loading rates (or at higher strain rates). The average b-values are lower as a few but larger amplitudes of AE events occur in contrast to more number of low amplitude AE events occur at low loading rates (or at low strain rates). Self-induced internal boiling in burning functional droplets has been observed to induce severe bulk shape oscillations in droplets with characteristic bubble ejection events that corrugate the droplet surface. Such bubble-droplet interactions are characterized by a distinct regime of a single bubble growing inside the droplet where evaporative Darrieus-Landau instability occurs at the bubble-droplet interface. In this regime the bubble-droplet system behaves as a self-excited coupled oscillator. In this study, we report the external flame-acoustic interaction with bubbles inside the droplet resulting in controlled droplet deformation. In particular, by exciting the droplet flame in a critical, responsive frequency range (80 Hz <= f(p) <= 120 Hz) the droplet deformation cycle could be altered through suppression of these self-excited instabilities and intensity/frequency of bubble ejection events. This selective acoustic tuning also enabled the control of bubble dynamics, bulk droplet-shape distortion and the final precipitate morphology even in burning nanoparticle laden droplets. The Western Ghats of India is among the top 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world. About 43% of the reported 117 bat species in India are found in this region, but few quantitative studies of bat echolocation calls and diversity have been carried out here thus far. A quantitative study of bat diversity was therefore conducted using standard techniques, including mist-netting, acoustical and roost surveys in the wet evergreen forests of Kudremukh National Park in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. A total of 106 bats were caught over 108 sampling nights, representing 17 species, 3 belonging to Megachiroptera and 14 to Microchiroptera. Acoustical and roost surveys added three more species, two from Microchiroptera and one from Megachiroptera. Of these 20 species, 4 belonged to the family Pteropodidae, 10 to Vespertilionidae, 3 to Rhinolophidae, 2 to Megadermatidae and 1 to Hipposideridae. We recorded the echolocation calls of 13 of the 16 microchiropteran species, of which the calls of 4 species (Pipistrellus coromandra, Pipistrellus affinis, Pipistrellus ceylonicus and Harpiocephalus harpia) have been recorded for the first time. Discriminant function analyses of the calls of 11 species provided 91.7% correct classification of individuals to their respective species, indicating that the echolocation calls could be used successfully for non-invasive acoustic surveys and monitoring of bat species in the future.

Temperature dependent acoustic phonon behavior of PbWO4 and BaWO4 using Brillouin spectroscopy has been explained for the first time. Low temperature Brillouin studies on PbWO4 and BaWO4 have been carried out from 320-20 K. In PbWO4, we observe a change in acoustic phonon mode behavior around 180 K. But in the case of BaWO4, we have observed two types of change in acoustic phonon mode behavior at 240 K and 130 K. The change in Brillouin shift omega and the slope d omega/dT are the order parameter for all kinds of phase transitions. Since we do not see hysteresis on acoustic phonon mode behavior in the reverse temperature experiments, these second order phase transitions are no related to structural phase change and could be related to acoustic phonon coupled electronic transitions. In PbWO4 he temperature driven phase transition at 180 K could be due to changes in he environment around he lead vacancy (V-pb(2-)) changes the electronic states. In the case of BaWO4, the phase transition at 240 K shows he decrease in penetration depth of WO3 impurity. So it becomes more metallic. The transition at 130 K could be he same electronic transitions as that of PbWO4 as function of temperature. The sound velocity and elastic moduli of BaWO4 shows that it could be the prominent material for acousto-optic device applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The efficiency of long-distance acoustic signalling of insects in their natural habitat is constrained in several ways. Acoustic signals are not only subjected to changes imposed by the physical structure of the habitat such as attenuation and degradation but also to masking interference from co-occurring signals of other acoustically communicating species. Masking interference is likely to be a ubiquitous problem in multi-species assemblages, but successful communication in natural environments under noisy conditions suggests powerful strategies to deal with the detection and recognition of relevant signals. In this review we present recent work on the role of the habitat as a driving force in shaping insect signal structures. In the context of acoustic masking interference, we discuss the ecological niche concept and examine the role of acoustic resource partitioning in the temporal, spatial and spectral domains as sender strategies to counter masking. We then examine the efficacy of different receiver strategies: physiological mechanisms such as frequency tuning, spatial release from masking and gain control as useful strategies to counteract acoustic masking. We also review recent work on the effects of anthropogenic noise on insect acoustic communication and the importance of insect sounds as indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Acoustic rangerfinders are a promising technology for accurate proximity detection, a critical requirement for many emerging mobile computing applications. While state-of-the-art systems deliver robust ranging performance, the computational intensiveness of their detection mechanism expedites the energy depletion of the associated devices that are typically powered by batteries. The contribution of this article is fourfold. First, it outlines the common factors that are important for ranging. Second, it presents a review of acoustic rangers and identifies their potential problems. Third, it explores the design of an information processing framework based on sparse representation that could potentially address existing challenges, especially for mobile devices. Finally, it presents mu-BeepBeep: a low energy acoustic ranging service for mobile devices, and empirically evaluates its benefits.

In subject-independent acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, the articulatory kinematics of a test subject are estimated assuming that the training corpus does not include data from the test subject. The training corpus in subject-independent inversion (SII) is formed with acoustic and articulatory kinematics data and the acoustic mismatch between training and test subjects is then estimated by an acoustic normalization using acoustic data drawn from a large pool of speakers called generic acoustic space (GAS). In this work, we focus on improving the SII performance through better acoustic normalization and adaptation. We propose unsupervised and several supervised ways of clustering GAS for acoustic normalization. We perform an adaptation of acoustic models of GAS using the acoustic data of the training and test subjects in SII. It is found that SII performance significantly improves (similar to 25% relative on average) over the subject-dependent inversion when the acoustic clusters in GAS correspond to phonetic units (or states of 3-state phonetic HMMs) and when the acoustic model built on GAS is adapted to training and test subjects while optimizing the inversion criterion.
