The syntheses and characterization of some new mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes {Ni(L-1)(PPh3)] (1), Ni(L-1)(Py)] (2), Ni(L-2)(PPh3)]center dot DMSO (3), Ni(L-2)(Imz)] (4), Ni(L-3)(4-pic)] (5) and RNi(L-3))(2)(mu-4,4'-byp)]center dot 2DMSO (6)1 of three selected thiosemicarbazones the 4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazones of salicylaldehyde) (H2L1-3) (A, Scheme 1) are described in the present study, differing in the inductive effect of the substituent X (X = F, Br and OCH3), in order to observe its influence, if any, on the redox potentials and biological activity of the complexes. All the synthesized ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of four mononuclear (1-3 and 5) and one dinuclear (6) Ni(II) complex have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of these complexes and their antibacterial activities indicate that compound 4 is the potential lead molecule for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We report a special, hitherto-unexplored property of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as a chiral solvating agent for enantiodiscrimination of alpha-amino acids in the polar solvent DMSO. This phenomenon has been investigated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The mechanism of the interaction property of EGCG with alpha-amino acids has been understood as arising out of hydrogen-bonded noncovalent interactions, where the -OH groups of two phenyl rings of EGCG play dominant roles. The conversion of the enantiomeric mixture into diastereomers yielded well-resolved peaks for D and L amino acids permitting the precise measurement of enantiomeric composition. Often one encounters complex situations when the spectra are severely overlapped or partially resolved hampering the testing of enantiopurity and the precise measurement of enantiomeric excess (ee). Though higher concentration of EGCG yielded better discrimination, the use of lower concentration being economical, we have exploited an appropriate 2D NMR experiment in overcoming such problems. Thus, in the present study we have successfully demonstrated the utility of the bioflavonoid (-)-EGCG, a natural product as a chiral solvating agent for the discrimination of large number of alpha-amino acids in a polar solvent DMSO. Another significant advantage of this new chiral sensing agent is that it is a natural product and does not require tedious multistep synthesis unlike many other chiral auxiliaries.

Six-membered C,N] cyclopalladated sym N,N',N `'-tri(4-tolyl)guanidines, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr] (sym = symmetrical; Ar = 4-MeC6H4; LH24-tolyl) of the types (C,N)Pd(mu-OC(O)R)](2) (1 and 2), (C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (3), cis-(C,N)PdLBr] (4-7), and (C,N)Pd(acac)] (8) were prepared in high yield by established methods with a view aimed at understanding the influence of the 4-tolyl substituent of the guanidine moiety upon the solution behaviour of 1-8. The composition of 1-8 was confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of 1-6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Palladacycles 1-3 exist as a dimer in transoid conformation in the solid state while 4-6 exist as a monomer with cis configuration around the palladium atom as the Lewis base is placed cis to the Pd-C bond due to antisymbiosis. The NMR spectra of 1-8 revealed the presence of a single isomer in solution and this spectral feature is ascribed to the rapid inversion of the six-membered ``C,N]Pd'' ring due to the presence of sterically less hindered and more symmetrical 4-tolyl substituent in the =NAr unit of the guanidine moiety. A systematic understanding of the noncovalent interactions that influence the structures of the cis conformers and the equilibrium between the cis and the trans conformers, of the X-Pro tertiary amide motifs, is presented based on analyses of H-1-, C-13-NMR and FTIR absorption spectra of two sets of homologous peptides, X-Pro-Aib-OMe and X-Pro-NH-Me (where X is acetyl, propionyl, isobutyryl and pivaloyl), in solvents of varying polarities. First, this work shows that the cis conformers of any X-Pro tertiary amide motif, including Piv-Pro, are accessible in the new motifs X-Pro-Aib-OMe, in solution. These conformers are uniquely observable by FTIR spectroscopy at ambient temperatures and by NMR spectroscopy from temperatures as high as 273 K. This is made possible by the persistent presence of n(i-1i)* interactions at Aib, which also influence the disappearance of steric effects at these cis X-Pro rotamers. Second, contrary to conventional understanding, the energy contribution of steric effects to the cis/trans equilibrium at the X-Pro motifs is found to be nonvariant (0.54 +/- 0.02 kcal/mol) with increase in steric bulk on the X group. Third, the current studies provide direct evidence for the weak intramolecular interactions namely the n(i-1i)*, the N-Pro center dot center dot center dot Hi+1 (C(5)a), and the C-7 hydrogen bond that operate and influence the structures, stabilities, and dynamics between different conformational states of X-Pro tertiary amide motifs. NMR and IR spectral data suggest that the cis conformers of X-Pro motifs are ensembles of short-lived rotamers about the C-X-N-Pro bond. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biopolymers 101: 66-77, 2014.

Electrochemically deposited porous film of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on carbon paper current collector is used as the substrate for electrochemical deposition of Au. PEDOT facilitates the formation of Au nanoflowers with an enhanced electrochemical active surface area, when compared with sub-micron size Au particles deposited on bare carbon paper electrode. Owing to enhanced surface area of Au nanoflowers, the Au-PEDOT/C electrode shows greater activity than Au/C electrode toward electrooxidation of glucose in 0.5 M NaOH electrolyte. Cyclic voltammetry studies show that the peak current density increases with increase in concentrations of glucose and NaOH in the electrolyte. H-1-NMR spectroscopy data indicates that sodium formate and gluconate are the primary products of electrooxidation of glucose on Au-PEDOT/C electrode. Repetitive cyclic voltametry and amperometry studies suggest that the electrochemical stability of Au-PEDOT/C electrode is higher than that of Au/C electrode. Thus, electrochemically deposited nanostructured Au on PEDOT/C is an efficient catalyst for direct glucose oxidation in alkaline media. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Eight alkali metal ion-mediated dioxidovanadium(V), {(VO2L1-6)-O-V} A(H2O)n]proportional to, complexes for A = Li+, Na+, K+ and Cs+, containing tridentate aroylhydrazonate ligands coordinating via ONO donor atoms, are described. All the synthesised ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterised by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystallographic investigation of 3, 5-7 shows the presence of distorted NO4 coordination geometries for LVO2- in each case, and varying mu-oxido and/ or mu-aqua bridging with interesting variations correlated with the size of the alkali metal ions: with small Li+, no bridging-O is found but four ion aggregates are found with Na+, chains for K+ and finally, layers for Cs+. Two (5) or three-dimensional (3, 6 and 7) architectures are consolidated by hydrogen bonding. The dioxidovanadium(V) complexes were found to exhibit DNA binding activity due to their interaction with CT-DNA by the groove binding mode, with binding constants ranging from 10(3) to 10(4) M-1. Complexes 1-8 were also tested for DNA nuclease activity against pUC19 plasmid DNA which showed that 6 and 7 had the best DNA binding and photonuclease activity; these results support their good protein binding and cleavage activity with binding constants ranging from 104 to 105 M-1. Finally, the in vitro antiproliferative activity of all complexes was assayed against the HeLa cell line. Some of the complexes (2, 5, 6 and 7) show considerable activity compared to commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs. The variation in cytotoxicity of the complexes is influenced by the various functional groups attached to the aroylhydrazone derivative.

Self-assembly of a chloro-bridged half-sandwich p-cymene ruthenium(II) complex Ru-2(mu-Cl-2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)Cl-2] 1 with linear ditopic donor L; trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene] in presence of 2 eq. AgNO3 in CH3CN yielded a chloro-bridged molecular rectangle 2. The rectangle 2 was isolated as nitrate salt in high yield (90 %) and characterized by infra-red, H-1 NMR spectroscopy including ESI-MS analyses. Molecular structure of 2 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study The diffraction analysis shows that 2 adopts a tetranuclear rectangular geometry with the dimensions of 5.51 angstrom x 13.29 angstrom and forming an infinite supramolecular chain with large internal porosity arising through multiple pi-pi and CH-pi interactions between the adjacent rectangles. Furthermore, rectangle 2 is used as selective receptor for phenolic-nitroaromatic compounds such as picric acid, dinitrophenol and nitrophenol.

The crystal and molecular structures of the potential antidepressant drug fenobam and its derivatives are examined in terms of the preferred form among the two possible tautomeric structures. In this study, chemical derivatization has been utilized as a means to ``experimentally simulate'' the tautomeric preference and conformational variability in fenobam. Eight new derivatives of fenobam have been synthesized, and structural features have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The specific tautomeric preference found in all of these compounds and their known crystal forms have been construed in terms of the stabilizing intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonding. The hierarchy of intramolecular hydrogen bonds evidenced as the preference of the C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond over C-H center dot center dot center dot N and that of the C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bond over C-H center dot center dot center dot S explains the two distinct conformations adopted by fenobam and thiofenobam derivatives. The relative energy values of different molecular conformations have been calculated and compared.

Molecules in their liquid crystalline phase undergo rotational motion about the long axis of the molecule and the shape adopted by the rotating molecule plays an important role in influencing the mesophase morphology. In this context, obtaining the topology and the relative orientation of the different sub-units are important steps. For studying the liquid crystalline phase, C-13 NMR spectroscopy is a convenient method and for certain specifically designed nematogens, 2-dimensional separated local field (2D-SLF) NMR spectroscopy provides a particularly simple and straightforward means of arriving at the molecular topology. We demonstrate this approach on two three ring based nematogens designed with a phenyl or a thiophene ring at one of the termini. From the C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings of the terminal carbon obtained using the 2D-SLF NMR technique, the order parameter of the local symmetry axis of the terminal phenyl ring as well as of the long molecular axis could be easily estimated. For the thiophene nematogen, the lack of symmetry of the thiophene moiety necessitates some additional computational steps. The results indicate that the thiophene unit has its local ordering axis oriented away from the long molecular axis by a small angle, consistent with a bent structure expected in view of the thiophene geometry. The experiment also demonstrates the ability of 2D-SLF NMR to provide high resolution spectra by separation of several overlapped resonances in terms of their C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings. The results are consistent with a rod-like topology of the core of the investigated mesogens. The investigation demonstrates the potential of 2D-SLF NMR C-13 spectroscopy for obtaining atomistic level information and its utility for topological studies of different mesogens.

A new ruthenium pincer complex RuHCl(CO)(PNP)] (PNP = PhCH2N(CH2CH2PPh2)(2)) (1) was synthesized and characterized. The reactivity of complex 1 with electrophilic reagents XOTf (X = H, CH3, and Me3Si; OTf = CF3SO3) was studied by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy with an aim to observe and characterize sigma complexes of type Ru(eta(2)-HX)Cl(CO)(PNP)]OTf] (X = H (2), CH3 (3), Me3Si (4)). Reaction of complex 1 with HOTf resulted in the formation of the dihydrogen complex, Ru(eta(2)-H-2)Cl(CO)(PNP)OTf] (2). On the other hand, the reaction between complex 1 and MeOTf and Me3SiOTf resulted in the direct elimination of MeCl and Me3SiCl via a S(N)2 type of reaction without the intermediacy of the respective sigma complexes 3 and 4. This contrasting reactivity behaviour has been rationalized taking into consideration the approach of the relatively bulky electrophites CH3+ and Me3Si+ onto the hydride moiety of the ruthenium fragment, which is sterically hindered.

Detection of trace amounts of explosive materials is significantly important for security concerns and pollution control. Four multicomponent metal organic frameworks (MOFs-12, 13, 23, and 123) have been synthesized by employing ligands embedded with fluorescent tags. The multicomponent assembly of the ligands was utilized to acquire a diverse electronic behavior of the MOFs and the fluorescent tags were strategically chosen to enhance the electron density in the MOFs. The phase purity of the MOFs was established by PXRD, NMR spectroscopy, and finally by singlecrystal XRD. Single-crystal structures of the MOFs-12 and 13 showed the formation of three-dimensional porous networks with the aromatic tags projecting inwardly into the pores. These electron-rich MOFs were utilized for detection of ex- plosive nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) through fluorescence quenching with high selectivity and sensitivity. The rate of fluorescence quenching for all the MOFs follows the order of electron deficiency of the NACs. We also showed the detection of picric acid (PA) by luminescent MOFs is not always reliable and can be misleading. This attracts our attention to explore these MOFs for sensing picryl chloride (PC), which is as explosive as picric acid and used widely to prepare more stable explosives like 2,4,6-trinitroaniline from PA. Moreover, the recyclability and sensitivity studies indicated that these MOFs can be reused several times with parts per billion (ppb) levels of sensitivity towards PC and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Depalladation of the monoalkyne-inserted cyclopalldated guanidines (kappa 2(C,N)Pd(2,6-Me2C5H3N)Br] (I and II) in PhCl under reflux conditions and that of the dialkyne-inserted cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)PdBr] (III) in pyridine under reflux conditions afforded a guanidine-containing indole (1), imidaziondole (2), and benzazepine (3) in 80%, 67%, and 76%, yields, respectively. trans-L2PdBr2] species (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N, C5H5N) were also isolated in the aforementioned reactions in 35%, 42%, and 40% yields. Further , the reaction of the cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (IV) with AgBF4 in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic pincer type cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(3)(C,N,O)Pd(MeCN)]BF4] (4) in 85% yield and this palladacycle upon crystallization in MeCN and the reaction of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (V) with AgBf(4) in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic palladacycles {kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(MeCN)(2)]BF4](5 and 6) in 89% and 91% yields, respectively. The separate reactions of 4 with 2 equiv of methyl phenylpropiolate (MPP) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) and the reaction of 5 with 2 equiv of MPP in PhCl at 110 degrees C afforded the guanidine-containing quinazolinium tetrafluoroborate 7 in 25-32% yields. The reaction of 6 with 2 equiv of DPA under otherwise identical conditions afforded the unsymmetrically substituted guanidinium tetrafluoroborate 8, containing a highly substituted naphthalene unit, in 82% yield. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and all compounds except 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Molecular structure of 2 and 3 are nove, as the framework in the former arises due to the formation of two C-N bonds upon depalladation while the butadienyl unit in the latter revealed cis,cis stereochemistry, a-feature unprecedented in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible pathways for the formation of heterocycles/carbocycles are proposed. the influence of substitutents on the aryl rings fo the cyclopalladated guanidine moiety and those on alkynes upon the nature of the products in addressed. Heterocycles 1 and 7 revealed the presence of two rotamers in about a 1.00:0.43 ratio in CDCl3 and in about a 1.00:0.14 ratio in CD3OD, respectively, as detected by H-1 NMR spectroscopy while in CD3CN and DMSO-d(6) (1) and CD3CN and CDCl3 (7), these heterocycles revealed the presence of a single rotamer. These spectral features are attributed to the restricted C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, which possibly arises from steric constraint due to the formation of a N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bond with CDCl3 (1) and N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-D center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds with CD3OD (7).

Here, we show the binding results of a leguminosae lectin, winged bean basic agglutinin (WBA I) to N-trifluoroacetylgalactosamine (NTFAGalN), methyl-alpha-N-trifluoroacetylgalactosamine (Me alpha NTFAGalN) and methyl-beta-tifluoroacetylgalactosamine (Me beta NTFAGalN) using (19) F NMR spectroscopy. No chemical shift difference between the free and bound states for NTFAGalN and Me beta NTFAGalN, and 0.01-ppm chemical shift change for Me alpha NTFAGalN, demonstrate that the Me alpha NTFAGalN has a sufficiently long residence time on the protein binding site as compared to Me beta NTFAGalN and the free anomers of NTFAGalN. The sugar anomers were found in slow exchange with the binding site of agglutinin. Consequently, we obtained their binding parameters to the protein using line shape analyses. Aforementioned analyses of the activation parameters for the interactions of these saccharides indicate that the binding of alpha and beta anomers of NTFAGalN and Me alpha NTFAGalN is controlled enthalpically, while that of Me beta NTFAGalN is controlled entropically. This asserts the sterically constrained nature of the interaction of the Me beta NTFAGalN with WBA I. These studies thus highlight a significant role of the conformation of the monosaccharide ligands for their recognition by WBA I.

We report a direct correlation between dissimilar ion pair formation and alkali ion transport in soda-lime silicate glasses established via broad band conductivity spectroscopy and local structural probe techniques. The combined Raman and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques on these glasses reveal the coexistence of different anionic species and the prevalence of Na+-Ca2+ dissimilar pairs as well as their distributions. The spectroscopic results further confirm the formation of dissimilar pairs atomistically, where it increases with increasing alkaline-earth oxide content These results, are the manifestation of local structural changes in the silicate network with composition which give rise to different environments into which the alkali ions hop. The Na+ ion mobility varies inversely with dissimilar pair formation, i.e. it decreases with increase of non-random formation of dissimilar pairs. Remarkably, we found that increased degree of non-randomness leads to temperature dependent variation in number density of sodium ions. Furthermore, the present study provides the strong link between the dynamics of the alkali ions and different sites associated with it in soda-lime silicate glasses. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and boron nitride both possess novel properties, the former associated with microporosity and the latter with good mechanical properties. We have synthesized composites of the imidazolate based MOF, ZIF-8, and few-layer BN in order to see whether we can incorporate the properties of both these materials in the composites. The composites so prepared between BN nanosheets and ZIF-8 have compositions ZIF-1BN, ZIF-2BN, ZIF-3BN and similar to ZIF-4BN. The composites have been characterized by PXRD, TGA, XPS, electron microscopy, IR, Raman and solid state NMR spectroscopy. The composites possess good surface areas, the actual value decreasing only slightly with the increase in the BN content. The CO2 uptake remains nearly the same in the composites as in the parent ZIF-8. More importantly, the addition of BN markedly improves the mechanical properties of ZIF-8, a feature that is much desired in MOFs. Observation of microporous features along with improved mechanical properties in a MOF is indeed noteworthy. Such manipulation of properties can be profitably exploited in practical applications.
