A new coupled approach is presented for modeling the hydrogen bubble evolution and engulfment during an aluminum alloy solidification process in a micro-scale domain. An explicit enthalpy scheme is used to model the solidification process which is coupled with a level-set method for tracking the hydrogen bubble evolution. The volume averaging techniques are used to model mass, momentum, energy and species conservation equations in the chosen micro-scale domain. The interaction between the solid, liquid and gas interfaces in the system have been studied. Using an order-of-magnitude study on growth rates of bubble and solid interfaces, a criterion is developed to predict bubble elongation which can occur during the engulfment phase. Using this model, we provide further evidence in support of a conceptual thought experiment reported in literature, with regard to estimation of final pore shape as a function of typical casting cooling rates. The results from the proposed model are qualitatively compared with in situ experimental observations reported in literature. The ability of the model to predict growth and movement of a hydrogen bubble and its subsequent engulfment by a solidifying front has been demonstrated for varying average cooling rates encountered in typical sand, permanent mold, and various casting processes. Treatment of the chloro-substituted diboradiferrocene derivative 1 with Me3SiOMe and subsequent hydrolysis resulted in formation of the novel organometallic bis(borinic acid) derivative 3. The assembly of 3 into supramolecular structures via hydrogen bonding and reversible covalent boron-oxygen bond formation was explored. Upon crystallization from acetone or THF one-dimensional chains form in which molecules of 3 alternately serve as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. The additional OH hydrogens that are not involved in hydrogen bonding within the polymeric chains undergo hydrogen bonding to the solvent molecules. Removal of the solvent was achieved at moderate temperature under high vacuum. While the polymeric chains remain intact, in the absence of the solvent as a hydrogen bond acceptor, short contacts to the Cp rings of neighboring polymer strands lead to a network-like structure. At higher temperatures, further dehydration occurs with formation of B-O-B linkages as confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Oligomers with up to 15 repeating units (30 ferrocenes) were detected.

We derive exact expressions for the zeroth and the first three spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and for the zeroth and the first spectral moment sum rules for the retarded self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in nonequilibrium, when the local on-site repulsion and the chemical potential are time-dependent, and in the presence of an external time-dependent electromagnetic field. We also evaluate these expressions for the homogeneous case in equilibrium, where all time dependence and external fields vanish. Unlike similar sum rules for the Fermi-Hubbard model, in the Bose-Hubbard model case, the sum rules often depend on expectation values that cannot be determined simply from parameters in the Hamiltonian like the interaction strength and chemical potential but require knowledge of equal-time many-body expectation values from some other source. We show how one can approximately evaluate these expectation values for the Mott-insulating phase in a systematic strong-coupling expansion in powers of the hopping divided by the interaction. We compare the exact moment relations to the calculated moments of spectral functions determined from a variety of different numerical approximations and use them to benchmark their accuracy. The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of plastic anisotropy and evolution in crystallographic texture with deformation on the ductile fracture behaviour of polycrystalline solids. To this end, numerical simulations of multiple void growth and interaction ahead of a notch tip are performed under mode I, plane strain, small scale yielding conditions using two approaches. The first approach is based on the Hill yield theory, while the second employs crystal plasticity constitutive equations and a Taylor-type homogenization in order to represent the ductile polycrystalline solid. The initial textures pertaining to continuous cast Al-Mg AA5754 sheets in recrystallized and cold rolled conditions are considered. The former is nearly-isotropic, while the latter displays pronounced anisotropy. The results indicate distinct changes in texture in the ligaments bridging the voids ahead of the notch tip with increase in load level which gives rise to retardation in porosity evolution and increase in tearing resistance for both materials.

Grain boundary dynamics and grain growth play a pivotal role in the fabrication of functional polycrystalline materials. However, not much is known about the delicate interplay between various microscopic processes that drive grain boundary motion which eventually culminates in the desired grain morphology. Colloidal systems are ideally suited to bridge the gap between the microscopic and macroscopic processes underlying grain growth, since their dynamics can be followed in real space and real time with single-particle resolution. The present review aims at highlighting contributions from colloid experiments that have led to a holistic understanding of grain growth in polycrystalline materials.

Optical quality single crystals of sodium D-isoascorbate monohydrate were grown by a slow cooling technique. The crystal possesses a bulky prismatic morphology. Thermal analyses indicate that the crystals are stable up to 125 degrees C. The optical transmission window ranges from 307 nm to 1450 nm. The principal refractive indices have been measured employing Brewster's angle method. The crystallographic and the principal dielectric axes coincide with each other such that a lies along Z, b along X and c along Y. The optic axis is oriented 58 degrees (at 532 nm) to the crystallographic a axis in the XZ plane and the crystal is negative biaxial. Type 1 and type 2 phase matching curves are generated and experimentally verified. No polarization dependence of the light absorption was observed confirming the validity of Kleinman's symmetry conjecture, leading to a single nonvanishing nonlinear tensor component. According to Hobden's classification the crystal belongs to class 3. The crystal also exhibits second order noncollinear conic sections. The single shot and multiple shot surface laser damage thresholds are determined to be 32.7 GW cm(-2) and 6.5 GW cm(-2) respectively for 1064 nm radiation.

Crystals of a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, viz., L-histidinium 2-nitrobenzoate (LHNB) (1) were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution containing equimolar concentrations of L-histidine and 2-nitrobenzoic acid. The structure of the title compound which crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2(1) was elucidated using single crystal X-ray intensity data. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of 1 reveals its transparent nature while the vibrational spectra confirm the presence of the functional groups in 1. The thermal stability and second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 1 were also investigated. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

An analysis of the energy budget for the general case of a body translating in a stationary fluid under the action of an external force is used to define a power loss coefficient. This universal definition of power loss coefficient gives a measure of the energy lost in the wake of the translating body and, in general, is applicable to a variety of flow configurations including active drag reduction, self-propulsion and thrust generation. The utility of the power loss coefficient is demonstrated on a model bluff body flow problem concerning a two-dimensional elliptical cylinder in a uniform cross-flow. The upper and lower boundaries of the elliptic cylinder undergo continuous motion due to a prescribed reflectionally symmetric constant tangential surface velocity. It is shown that a decrease in drag resulting from an increase in the strength of tangential surface velocity leads to an initial reduction and eventual rise in the power loss coefficient. A maximum in energetic efficiency is attained for a drag reducing tangential surface velocity which minimizes the power loss coefficient. The effect of the tangential surface velocity on drag reduction and self-propulsion of both bluff and streamlined bodies is explored through a variation in the thickness ratio (ratio of the minor and major axes) of the elliptical cylinders.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline Pd films prepared by magnetron sputtering have been investigated as a function of strain. The films were deposited onto polyimide substrates and tested in tensile mode. In order to follow the deformation processes in the material, several samples were strained to defined straining states, up to a maximum engineering strain of 10%, and prepared for post-mortem analysis. The nanocrystalline structure was investigated by quantitative automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), identifying grain growth and twinning/detwinning resulting from dislocation activity as two of the mechanisms contributing to the macroscopic deformation. Depending on the initial twin density, the samples behaved differently. For low initial twin densities, an increasing twin density was found during straining. On the other hand, starting from a higher twin density, the twins were depleted with increasing strain. The findings from ACOM-TEM were confirmed by results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and from conventional and in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (CXRD, SXRD) experiments.

Vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical nanostructures were developed by homo-epitaxial growth method using nickel as catalyst, and their physical properties were investigated and reported. ZnO nanorods grown by vapor-liquid-solid method are single crystalline and grown along the < 001 > direction, whereas the second order nano-branches are grown along the < 110 > direction. The homo-epitaxial relation between nano-branches (ZnOb) and ZnO cores (ZnOc) is found to be (110)ZnOb//(110)ZnOc and (002)ZnOb//(002)ZnOc. The simple and hierarchical nanostructures exhibited ultra-violet emission peak at 380 nm as near band edge emission of ZnO and have very weak defects related peak at 492 nm. The growth of neuroblastoma (N2a) and Schwann cells has been explored on polymer derived carbon substrates of varying micro and nanoscale geometries: resorcinol-formaldehyde (RE) gel derived carbon films and electrospun nanofibrous (similar to 200 nm diameter) mat and SU-8 (a negative photoresist) derived carbon micro-patterns. MTT assay and complementary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay established cytocompatibility of RE derived carbon films and fibers over a period of 6 days in culture. The role of length scale of surface patterns in eliciting lineage-specific adaptive response along, across and on the interspacing between adjacent micropatterns (i.e., ``on'', ``across'' and ``off'') has been assayed. Textural features were found to affect 3',5'-cyclic AMP sodium salt-induced neurite outgrowth, over a wide range of length scales: from similar to 200 nm (carbon fibers) to similar to 60 mu m (carbon patterns). Despite their innate randomness, carbon nanofibers promoted preferential differentiation of N2a cells into neuronal lineage, similar to ordered micro-patterns. Our results, for the first time, conclusively demonstrate the potential of RE-gel and SU-8 derived carbon substrates as nerve tissue engineering platforms for guided proliferation and differentiation of neural cells in vitro. We report large scale deposition of tapered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on Si(100) substrate by using newly designed metal-organic complex of zinc (Zn) as the precursor, and microwave irradiation assisted chemical synthesis as a process. The coatings are uniform and high density ZnO nanorods (similar to 1.5 mu m length) grow over the entire area (625 mm(2)) of the substrate within 1-5 min of microwave irradiation. ZnO coatings obtained by solution phase deposition yield strong UV emission. Variation of the molecular structure/molecular weight of the precursors and surfactants influence the crystallinity, morphology, and optical properties of ZnO coatings. The precursors in addition with the surfactant and the solvent are widely used to obtain desired coating on any substrate. The growth mechanism and the schematics of the growth process of ZnO coatings on Si(100) are discussed. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mitochondrial biogenesis and morphological changes are associated with tissue-specific functional demand, but the factors and pathways that regulate these processes have not been completely identified. A lack of mitochondrial fusion has been implicated in various developmental and pathological defects. The spatiotemporal regulation of mitochondrial fusion in a tissue such as muscle is not well understood. Here, we show in Drosophila indirect flight muscles (IFMs) that the nuclear-encoded mitochondrial inner membrane fusion gene, Opa1-like, is regulated in a spatiotemporal fashion by the transcription factor/co-activator Erect wing (Ewg). In IFMs null for Ewg, mitochondria undergo mitophagy and/or autophagy accompanied by reduced mitochondrial functioning and muscle degeneration. By following the dynamics of mitochondrial growth and shape in IFMs, we found that mitochondria grow extensively and fuse during late pupal development to form the large tubular mitochondria. Our evidence shows that Ewg expression during early IFM development is sufficient to upregulate Opa1-like, which itself is a requisite for both late pupal mitochondrial fusion and muscle maintenance. Concomitantly, by knocking down Opa1-like during early muscle development, we show that it is important for mitochondrial fusion, muscle differentiation and muscle organization. However, knocking down Opa1-like, after the expression window of Ewg did not cause mitochondrial or muscle defects. This study identifies a mechanism by which mitochondrial fusion is regulated spatiotemporally by Ewg through Opa1-like during IFM differentiation and growth.
