Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. The research work presented here is based on an empirical study of the process of synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices. As a background to the work, the paper explores concepts of what mechanical device, state, single state and multiple state are, and in the context of the above observational studies, attempts to identify the outstanding issues for supporting multiple state synthesis of mechanical devices.

This paper proposes a framework of designing for conceptual and early embodiment design that uses physical laws and effects explicitly as a central aspect for designing. This is especially important in domains that make explicit use of physical laws and effects in their design, such as novel sensors. The objectives of the paper are: (a) Develop a model, (b) Empirically evaluate the model and (c) Propose a framework. The model is developed by integrating the activity- and outcome-based elements. The model is validated empirically by analyzing protocols of design sessions to find instances of activities and outcomes. Based on the findings, a framework is proposed on how designing should be done. Elements of GEMS (Generate-Evaluate-Modify-Select) and SAPPhIRE (State change-Action-Part-Phenomenon-Input-oRgan-Effect) are used for developing the model.Empirical evaluation confirms that designing can be modeled with the activity and outcome elements. The paper concludes with the identification of areas that require support and future work.

Substantial increase in competition compels design firms to develop new products at an increasingly rapid pace. This situation pressurizes engineering teams to develop better products and at the same time develop products faster [1]. Continuous innovation is a key factor to enable a company to generate profit on a continued basis, through the introduction of new products in the market – a prime intention for Product Lifecycle Management. Creativity, affecting a wide spectrum of business portfolios, is regarded as the crucial factor for designing products. A central goal of product development is to create products that are sufficiently novel and useful. This research focuses on the determination of novelty of engineering products. Determination of novelty is important for ascertaining the newness of a product, to decide on the patentability of the design, to compare designers' capability of solving problems and to ascertain the potential market of a product. Few attempts at measuring novelty is available in literature [2, 3, 4], but more in-depth research is required for assessing degree of novelty of products. This research aims to determine the novelty of a product by enabling a person to determine the degree of novelty in a product. A measure of novelty has been developed by which the degree of ''novelty'' of products can be ascertained. An empirical study has been conducted to determine the validity of this method for determining the 'novelty' of the products.

Digital human modeling (DHM) involves modeling of structure, form and functional capabilities of human users for ergonomics simulation. This paper presents application of geometric procedures for investigating the characteristics of human visual capabilities which are particularly important in the context mentioned above. Using the cone of unrestricted directions through the pupil on a tessellated head model as the geometric interpretation of the clinical field-of-view (FoV), the results obtained are experimentally validated. Estimating the pupil movement for a given gaze direction using Listing's Law, FoVs are re-computed. Significant variation of the FoV is observed with the variation in gaze direction. A novel cube-grid representation, which integrated the unit-cube representation of directions and the enhanced slice representation has been introduced for fast and exact point classification for point visibility analysis for a given FoV. Computation of containment frequency of every grid-cell for a given set of FoVs enabled determination of percentile-based FoV contours for estimating the visual performance of a given population. This is a new concept which makes visibility analysis more meaningful from ergonomics point-of-view. The algorithms are fast enough to support interactive analysis of reasonably complex scenes on a typical desktop computer. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a new algorithm for extracting Free-Form Surface Features (FFSFs) from a surface model. The extraction algorithm is based on a modified taxonomy of FFSFs from that proposed in the literature. A new classification scheme has been proposed for FFSFs to enable their representation and extraction. The paper proposes a separating curve as a signature of FFSFs in a surface model. FFSFs are classified based on the characteristics of the separating curve (number and type) and the influence region (the region enclosed by the separating curve). A method to extract these entities is presented. The algorithm has been implemented and tested for various free-form surface features on different types of free-form surfaces (base surfaces) and is found to correctly identify and represent the features irrespective of the type of underlying surface. The representation and extraction algorithm are both based on topology and geometry. The algorithm is data-driven and does not use any pre-defined templates. The definition presented for a feature is unambiguous and application independent. The proposed classification of FFSFs can be used to develop an ontology to determine semantic equivalences for the feature to be exchanged, mapped and used across PLM applications. This paper deals with preparation of nanocomposites using modified nanoclay (organoclay) and polypropylene (PP), with, and without compatibilizer (m-TMI-g-PP) to study the effects of modified nanoclay and compatibilizer on viscoelastic properties. Nanocomposites were prepared in two steps; compounding of master batch of nanoclay, polypropylene and m-TMI-g-PP in a torque rheometer and blending of this master-batch with polypropylene in a twin-screw extruder in the specific proportions to yield 3-9% nanoclay by weight in the composite. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests were carried out to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of virgin polypropylene and nanocomposites. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E `') and damping coefficient (tand) of PP and nano-composites were investigated with and without compatibilizer in the temperature range of -40 degrees C to 140 degrees C at a step of 5 degrees C and frequency range of 5 Hz to 100 Hz at a step of 10 Hz. Storage modulus and loss modulus of the nano-composites was significantly higher than virgin polypropylene throughout the temperature range. Storage modulus of the composites increased continuously with increasing nano-content from 3% to 9%. Composites prepared with compatibilizer exhibited inferior storage modulus than the composites without compatibilizer. Surface morphology such as dispersion of nanoclay in the composites with and without compatibilizer was analyzed through Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) that explained the differences in viscoelastic behavior of composites.
