Direct writing of patterns is being widely attempted in the field of microelectronic circuit/device manufacture. Use of this technique eliminates the need for employing photolithographic process. Laser induced direct writing can be achieved by (i) Photochemical reaction [i] , (ii) Evaporation from target material [2], and (iii) decomposition.Micron size features of palladium and copper through decomposition of palladium acetate and copper formate respectively on quartz and silicon using Argon ion laser have been reported [3,4] .In this commuication we report a technique for both single line and large area depositon of copper through decomposition of copper acetate,(CH3COO)2Cu, on alumina substrates.Nd:YAG laser known for its reliability and low maintenance cost as compared to excimer and other gas lasers is used. This technique offers an attractive and economical alternative for manufacture of thin film microcircuits.

The increase in optical band gap (photo bleaching) due to light illumination was studied at room temperature as well as at low (4.2 K) temperature for Sb/As2S3 multilayered film of 640 nm thickness by Fourier Transform Infrared Technique. The interdiffusion of Sb into As2S3 matrix results the formation of Sb-As2S3 ternary solid solutions which is explained by the change in optical band gap (E-g), absorption coefficient (alpha), Tauc parameter (B-1/2), Urbach edge (E-e). At the same time, photo darkening phenomena was observed in (As2S3)(0.93)Sb-0.07 film of same thickness both at low and room temperatures. From our X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements,we are able to show that some of the As-As, S-S and Sb-Sb bonds are converted into As-S and S-Sb bonds in case of multilayers. We found that the energetically favoured heteropolar bond formation take place by a phonon-assisted mechanism using the lone pair pi electrons of S-2(0). But in case of (As2S3)(0.93)Sb-0.02 film, the homopolar bonds are playing a major role. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The microstructural dependence of electrical properties of (Ba, Sr)TiO3(BST) thin films were studied from the viewpoint of dc and ac electrical properties. The films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique in a temperature range of 300 to 600 degrees C, inducing changes in grain size, structure, and morphology. Consequently, two different types of films were realized, of which type I, was polycrystalline, multigrained, while type II was [100] oriented possessing a densely packed fibrous microstructure. Leakage current measurements were done at elevated temperatures to provide evidence of the conduction mechanism present in these films. The results revealed a contribution from both electronic and ionic conduction. In the case of type I films, two trapping levels were identified with energies around 0.5 and 2.73 eV, which possibly originate from oxygen vacancies V-O and Ti3+ centers, respectively. These levels act as shallow and deep traps and are reflected in the current-voltage characteristics of the BST thin films. The activation energy associated with oxygen vacancy motion in this case was obtained as 1.28 eV. On the contrary, type II films showed no evidence of deep trap energy levels, while the identified activation energy associated with shallow traps was obtained as 0.38 eV. The activation energy obtained for oxygen vacancy motion in type II films was around 1.02 eV. The dc measurement results were further elucidated through ac impedance analysis, which revealed a grain boundary dominated response in type I in comparison to type II films where grain response is highlighted. A comparison of the mean relaxation time of the two films revealed three orders of magnitude higher relaxation time in the case of type I films. Due to smaller grain size in type I films the grains were considered to be completely depleted giving rise to only grain boundary response for the bulk of the film. The activation energy obtained from conductivity plots agree very well with that of dc measurements giving values 1.3 and 1.07 eV for type I and type II films, respectively. Since oxygen vacancy transport have been identified as the origin of resistance degradation in BST thin films, type I films with their higher value of activation energy for oxygen ion mobility explains the improvement in breakdown characteristics under constant high dc field stress. The role of microstructure in controlling the rate of degradation is found useful in this instance to enhance the film properties under high electric field stresses. PbSnS2 thin film has been prepared for the first time by spray pyrolysis technique on FTO substrate at 570K. The preliminary optical and structural characteristics of the film have been reported. The optical studies showed that the value of the fundamental absorption edge lies at 1.47eV and a low energy absorption band tail has been observed. The prepared film is p- type electrical conductivity, polycrystalline in nature and has an orthorhombic crystal structure. The value of an average grain size of the film is 350Å.

The electrochemical properties of the film-covered anode/solution interface in the magnesium/ manganese dioxide dry cell have been evaluated. The most plausible electrical equivalent circuit description of the Mg/solution interface with the passive film intact, has been identified. These results are based on the analysis of ac impedance and voltage transient measurements made on the dry cell under conditions which cause no damage to the protective passive film on the anode. The study demonstrates the complementary character of impedance and transient measurements when widely different frequency ranges are sampled in each type of investigation. The values and temperature dependence of the anode-film resistance, film capacitance, double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance of the film-covered magnesium/solution interface have been determined. The magnitude of these values and its implications in understanding the important performance aspects of the magnesium/manganese dioxide dry cell are discussed. The study may be extended, in principle, to Li, Al and Ca batteries.

A detailed study, involving the synthesis of a single-source precursor containing two metal ions sharing the same crystallographic site, has been undertaken to elucidate the use of such a single-source precursor in a CVD process for growing thin films of oxides comprising these two metals, ensuring a uniform composition and distribution of metal ions. The substituted complexes Cr1-xAlx(acac)(3), where acac = acetyl-acetonate, have been prepared by a co-synthesis method, and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy. TGA/DTA measurements, and single crystal X-ray diffraction at low temperature. All the studied compositions crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with Z = 4 in the unit cell. It was observed that the ratio (Al:Cr) of the site occupancy for the metal ions, obtained from single crystal refinement, is in agreement with the results obtained from complexometric titrations. All the solid state structures have the metal in an octahedral environment forming six-membered chelate rings. M-O acac bond lengths and disorder in the terminal carbon have been studied in detail for these substituted metal-organic complexes. One composition among these was chosen to evaluate their suitability as a single-source precursor in a LPMOCVD process (low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapour deposition) for the deposition of a substituted binary metal oxide thin film. The resulting thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline diamond coatings are grown on Si (100) substrate by hot filament CVD technique. We investigate here the effect of substrate roughening on the substrate temperature and methane concentration required to maintain high quality, high growth rate and faceted morphology of the diamond coatings. It has been shown that as we increase the substrate roughness from 0.05 mu m to 0.91 mu m (centre line average or CLA) there is enhancement in deposited film quality (Raman peak intensity ratio of sp (3) to non-sp (3) content increases from 1.65 to 7.13) and the substrate temperature can be brought down to 640A degrees C without any additional substrate heating. The coatings grown at adverse conditions for sp (3) deposition has cauliflower morphology with nanocrystalline grains and coatings grown under favourable sp (3) condition gives clear faceted grains.

Highly stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in agar-agar (Ag/agar) as inorganic-organic hybrid were obtained as free-standing film by in situ reduction of silver nitrate by ethanol. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/agar film on Escherichia coli (E. coil), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Candida albicans (C albicans) was evaluated in a nutrient broth and also in saline solution. In particular, films were repeatedly tested for antimicrobial activity after recycling. UV-vis absorption and TEM studies were carried out on films at different stages and morphological studies on microbes were carried out by SEM. Results showed spherical Ag NPs of size 15-25 nm, having sharp surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/agar film was found to be in the order, C. albicans > E. coil > S. aureus, and antimicrobial activity against C. albicans was almost maintained even after the third cycle. Whereas, in case of E. coil and S. aureus there was a sharp decline in antimicrobial activity after the second cycle. Agglomeration of Ag NPs in Ag/agar film on exposure to microbes was observed by TEM studies. Cytotoxic experiments carried out on HeLa cells showed a threshold Ag NPs concentration of 60 mu g/mL, much higher than the minimum inhibition concentration of Ag NPs (25.8 mu g/mL) for E. coli. The mechanical strength of the film determined by nanoindentation technique showed almost retention of the strength even after repeated cycle. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Curves for the uniformity in film thickness on spherical substrates are drawn for various geometries. The optimum source-to-substrate height for maximum uniformity of the film thickness is determined. These data are approximated to achieve uniform thickness on a large number of small planar substrates loaded on a large spherical substrate holder, the appropriate geometry being selected on the basis of the radius of curvature of the substrate holder.

Microwave switches operating in the X band were designed and fabricated using amorphous chalcogenide semiconductors of composition GexTeyAsz. Threshold devices were shown to operate as microwave modulators at modulation frequencies of up to 100 MHz. No delay time was observed at the highest frequency although the modulation efficiency decreased above 10 MHz owing to the finite recovery time which was approximately 0.3 × 10−8s. The devices can also be used as variolossers, the insertion loss being 0.5 dB in the OFF state and increasing on switching from 5 dB at 1 mA device current to 18 dB at 100 mA.The behaviour of the threshold switches can be explained in terms of the formation of a conducting filament in the ON state with a constant current density of 2 × 104Acm−2 that is shunted by the device capacitance. The OFF state conductivity σ varies as ωn (0.5 < n < 1) which is characteristic of hopping in localized states. However, there was evidence of a decrease in n or a saturation of the conductivity at high frequencies. As a result of phase separation memory switches require no holding current in the ON state and may be used as novel latching semiconductor phase-shifters.

The electrical switching behavior of amorphous Al23Te77 thin film devices, deposited by flash evaporation, has been studied in co-planar geometry. It is found that these samples exhibit memory type electrical switching. Scanning Electron Microscopic studies show the formation of a crystalline filament in the electrode region which is responsible for switching of the device from high resistance OFF state to low resistance ON state. It is also found that the switching behavior of thin film Al-Te samples is similar to that of bulk samples, with the threshold fields of bulk samples being higher. This has been understood on the basis of higher thermal conductance in bulk, which reduces the Joule heating and temperature rise in the electrode region. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
