In this work, the effect of hybridizing micro-Ti with nano-SiC particulates on the microstructural and the mechanical behaviour of Mg-5.6Ti composite were investigated. Mg materials containing micron-sized Ti particulates hybridized with different amounts of nano-size SiC particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition method followed by hot extrusion. The microstructural and mechanical behaviour of the developed Mg hybrid composites were studied in comparison with Mg-5.6Ti. Microstructural characterization revealed grain refinement attributed to the presence of uniformly distributed micro-Ti particles embedded with nano-SiC particulates. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses of Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composite showed relatively more localized recrystallized grains and lesser tensile twin fraction, when compared to Mg-5.6Ti. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated that the best combination of strength and ductility was observed in the Mg-(5.6Ti + 1.0SiC)(BM) hybrid composites. The superior strength properties of the Mg-(5.6Ti + x-SiC)(BM) hybrid composites when compared to Mg-5.6Ti is attributed to the presence of nano-reinforcements, the uniform distribution of the hybridized particles and the better interfacial bonding between the matrix and the reinforcement particles, achieved by nano-SiC addition.

In designing and developing various biomaterials, the influence of substrate properties, like surface topography, stiffness and wettability on the cell functionality has been investigated widely. However, such study to probe into the influence of the substrate conductivity on cell fate processes is rather limited. In order to address this issue, spark plasma sintered HA-CaTiO3 (Hydroxyapatite-Calcium titanate) has been used as a model material system to showcase the effect of varying conductivity on cell functionality. Being electroactive in nature, mouse myoblast cells (C2C12) were selected as a model cell line in this study. It was inferred that myoblast adhesion/growth systematically increases with substrate conductivity due to CaTiO3 addition to HA. Importantly, parallel arrangement of myoblast cells on higher CaTiO3 containing substrates indicate that self-adjustable cell patterning can be achieved on conductive biomaterials. Furthermore, enhanced myoblast assembly and myotube formation were recorded after 5 days of serum starvation. Overall, the present study conclusively establishes the positive impact of the substrate conductivity towards cell proliferation and differentiation as well as confirms the efficacy of HA-CaTiO3 biocomposites as conductive platforms to facilitate the growth, orientation and fusion of myoblasts, even when cultured in the absence of external electric field.
Effect of a natural mutation in the 5 ` untranslated region on the translational control of p53 mRNA

Tumor-suppressor protein p53, the `guardian of the genome', is critical in maintaining cellular homeostasis and genomic stability. Earlier, we have reported the discovery of internal ribosome entry sites (IRESs) within the p53 mRNA that regulate the translation of the full length and its N-terminal-truncated isoform, Delta N-p53. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein (PTB) is an IRES trans-acting factor that positively regulates the IRES activities of both p53 isoforms by relocating from nucleus to the cytoplasm during stress conditions. Here we have demonstrated the putative contact points of PTB on the p53 IRES RNA. Studies on mutations that occur naturally in the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR) in p53 mRNA were lacking. We have investigated a naturally occurring C-to-T single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) first reported in human melanoma tumors. This SNP is at position 119 in the 5' UTR of p53 mRNA and we demonstrate that it has consequences on the translational control of p53. Introduction of this SNP has led to decrease in cap-independent translation from p53 5' UTR in bicistronic reporter assay. Further, the effects of this SNP on cap-independent translation have been studied in the context of p53 cDNA as well. Interestingly, the 5' UTR with this SNP has shown reduced binding to PTB that can be corroborated to its weaker IRES activity. Previously, it has been shown that G2-M checkpoint, DNA-damaging stress and oncogenic insult favor IRES-mediated translation. Under similar conditions, we demonstrate that this SNP interferes with the enhancement of the IRES activity of the 5' UTR. Taken together, the results demonstrate for the first time that SNP in the 5' UTR of the p53 mRNA might have a role in translational control of this critical tumor-suppressor gene.

Evolution of texture and concomitant grain refinement during Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) of Ti - 13Nb - 13Zr alloy has been presented. Sub-micron sized equiaxed grains with narrow grain size distribution could be achieved after eight pass at 873 K. A characteristic ECAP texture evolved in alpha phase till four passes while the evolution of characteristic ECAP texture in the beta phase could be observed only beyond the fourth pass. On increasing the deformation up to eight passes, the texture in alpha phase weakens while the beta phase shows an ideal ECAP texture. A weaker texture, low dislocation density and high crystallite size values in alpha phase suggest the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization. The absence of texture evolution in beta phase till four passes can be attributed to local lattice rotations. The characteristic ECAP texture in the eight pass deformed sample is attributed to delayed dynamic recrystallization in the beta phase. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Zinc substituted cobalt ferrite powders {Co(1-x)ZnxFe2O4} (0.0 <= x <= 0.5) were prepared by the solution combustion method. The structural, morphological, magnetic and electrical properties of as synthesized samples were studied. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns reveals single phase, cubic spinel structure with space group No. Fd (3) over barm (227). As zinc concentration increases, the lattice constant increases and the crystallite size decreases. The minimum crystallite size of similar to 12 nm was observed for x = 0.5 composition. The synthesized ferrite compounds show ferrimagnetic behavior, with coercivity value of 10779 Oe (Hard ferrite) at 20 K and 1298 Oe (soft ferrite) at room temperature (RT). The maximum saturation magnetization recorded for the Co0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composition was 99.78 emu g(-1) and 63.83 emu g(-1) at 20 K and RT respectively. The dielectric parameters such as dielectric constant, loss tangent and AC conductivity were determined as a function of frequency at RT. The magnetic and dielectric properties of the samples illustrates that the materials were quite useful for the fabrication of nanoelectronic devices. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Boron oxide (B2O3) addition to pre-reacted K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) powders facilitated swift densification at relatively low sintering temperatures which was believed to be a key to minimize potassium and sodium loss. The base KNN powder was synthesized via solid-state reaction route. The different amounts (0.1-1 wt%) of B2O3 were-added, and ceramics were sintered at different temperatures and durations to optimize the amount of B2O3 needed to obtain KNN pellets with highest possible density and grain size. The 0.1 wt% B2O3-added KNN ceramics sintered at 1,100 A degrees C for 1 h exhibited higher density (97 %). Scanning electron microscopy studies confirmed an increase in average grain size with increasing B2O3 content at appropriate temperature of sintering and duration. The B2O3-added KNN ceramics exhibited improved dielectric and piezoelectric properties at room temperature. For instance, 0.1 wt% B2O3-added KNN ceramic exhibited d (33) value of 116 pC/N which is much higher than that of pure KNN ceramics. Interestingly, all the B2O3-added (0.1-1 wt%) KNN ceramics exhibited polarization-electric field (P vs. E) hysteresis loops at room temperature. The remnant polarization (P (r)) and coercive field (E (c)) values are dependent on the B2O3 content and crystallite size.

In addressing the issue of prosthetic infection, this work demonstrated the synergistic effect of the application of static magnetic field (SMF) and ferrimagnetic substrate properties on the bactericidal property in vitro. This aspect was studied using hydroxyapatite (HA)-xFe(3)O(4) (x=10, 20, and 40 wt.%) substrates, which have different saturation magnetization properties. During bacteria culture experiments, 100 mT SMF was applied to growth medium (with HA-xFe(3)O(4) substrate) in vitro for 30, 120, and 240 min. A combination of MTT assay, membrane rupture assays, live/dead assay, and fluorescence microscopic analysis showed that the bactericidal effect of SMF increases with the exposure duration as well as increasing Fe3O4 content in biomaterial substrates. Importantly, the synergistic bactericidal effect was found to be independent of bacterial cell type, as similar qualitative trend is measured with both gram negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and gram positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strains. The reduction in E. coli viability was 83% higher on HA-40 Wt % Fe3O4 composite after 4 h exposure to SMF as compared to nonexposed control. Interestingly, any statistically significant difference in ROS was not observed in bacterial growth medium after magnetic field exposure, indicating the absence of ROS enhancement due to magnetic field. Overall, this study illustrates significant role being played by magnetic substrate compositions towards bactericidal property than by magnetic field exposure alone. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present experimental study investigates the influence of post-deposition annealing on the transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value of ZnO thin films deposited on a flexible metal alloy substrate, and its relationship with the vibration sensing performance. Highly c-axis oriented and crystalline ZnO thin films were deposited on flexible Phynox alloy substrate via radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering. ZnO thin film samples were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 100 degrees C to 500 degrees C, resulting in the temperature of 300 degrees C determined as the optimum annealing temperature. The crystallinity, morphology, microstructure, and rms surface roughness of annealed ZnO thin films were systematically investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. The piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value was measured by 4-point bending method. ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C was highly c-axis oriented, crystalline, possesses fine surface morphology with uniformity in the grain size. This film showed higher d(31) coefficient value of 7.2 pm V-1. A suitable in-house designed and developed experimental set-up, for evaluating the vibration sensing performance of annealed ZnO thin films is discussed. As expected the ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C showed relatively better result for vibration sensing studies. It generates comparatively higher peak output voltage of 147 mV, due to improved structural and morphological properties, and higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. The Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) nanopowders were synthesised at different pH using co-precipitation method. The effect of pH on the phase formation of YIG is characterised using XRD, TEM, FTIR and TG/DTA. From the Scherer formula, the particle sizes of the powders were found to be 13, 19 and 28 nm for pH=10, 11 and 12 respectively. It is found that as the pH of the solution increase the particle size is also increases. It is also clear from the TG/DTA curves that as the pH is increasing the weight losses were found to be small. The nanopowders were sintered at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C for 5 h using conventional sintering method. The phase formation is completed at 800 degrees C/5 h which is correlated with TG/DTA. The average grain size of the samples is found to be similar to 161 nm. The high values of M-s=23 emu g(-1) and H-c=22 Oe were recorded for the sample sintered at 900 degrees C.

In this study, the effect of nano-B4C addition on the microstructural and the mechanical behavior of pure Mg are investigated. Pure Mg-metal reinforced with different amounts of nano-size B4C particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition technique followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization of the developed Mg/x-B4C composites revealed uniform distribution of nano-B4C particulates and significant grain refinement. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses showed presence of relatively more recrystallized grains and absence of fiber texture in Mg/B4C nanocomposites when compared to pure Mg. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated a significant improvement in tensile properties of the composites. The significant improvement in tensile ductility (similar to 180% increase with respect to pure Mg) is among the highest observed when compared to the pure Mg based nanocomposites existing in the current literature. The superior mechanical properties of the Mg/B4C nanocomposites are attributed to the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles and the tendency for texture randomization (absence of fiber texture) achieved due to the nano-B4C addition. Solution combustion synthesis technique was adopted to synthesize V2O5, and Mo doped phases, The as-synthesized V2O5, has been reduced by a novel reduction technique to form VO2 typephase. The monophasic nature of the samples as revealed by XRD data and systematic shift in peak position indicated solid solubility up to 2 at % of Mo in VO2 lattice. The crystallite size was found to similar to 40 nm. Particle size measurement carried out using Transmission electron microscope ( TEM) agreed with XRD experiments. Scanning electron microscope revealed the morphology of the particles to be plate like and bimodal. Variation in the metal- insulator transition temperature as a function of doping was investigated by 4-probe electrical resistivity measurement on sintered ceramics.

Adsorption experiments of mixtures of long chain alkanes into silicalite under liquid phase conditions show selectivity inversion and azeotrope formation. These effects are due to the subtle interplay between the size of the adsorbed molecules and pore topology of the adsorbent. In this study, the selective uptake of lighter component during liquid phase adsorption of C/C and C/C n-alkane binary mixtures in the zeolite silicalite is understood through configurational bias grand-canonical Monte Carlo molecular simulation technique and a coarse-grained siting analysis. The simulations are conducted under conditions of low and intermediate levels of loading. The siting pattern of the adsorbates inside the zeolite pores explain the selectivity as seen in experiments.

Soluble lead acid redox flow battery (SLRFB) offers a number of advantages. These advantages can be harnessed after problems associated with buildup of active material on. electrodes (residue) are resolved. A mathematical model is developed to understand residue formation in SLRFB. The model incorporates fluid flow, ion transport, electrode reactions, and non-uniform current distribution on electrode surfaces. A number of limiting cases are studied to conclude that ion transport and electrode reaction on anode simultaneously control battery performance. The model fits the reported cell voltage vs. time profiles very well. During the discharge cycle, the model predicts complete dissolution of deposited material from trailing edge side of the electrodes. With time, the active surface area of electrodes decreases rapidly. The corresponding increase in current density leads to precipitous decrease in cell potential before all the deposited material is dissolved. The successive charge-discharge cycles add to the residue. The model correctly captures the marginal effect of flow rate on cell voltage profiles, and identifies flow rate and flow direction as new variables for controlling residue buildup. Simulations carried out with alternating flow direction and a SLRFB with cylindrical electrodes show improved performance with respect to energy efficiency and residue buildup. Fe0.05Co0.95Sb2.875Te0.125, a double-element-substituted skutterudite, was prepared by induction melting, annealing, and hot pressing (HP). The hot-pressed sample was subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) with 4 GPa pressure at 673 K. X-ray diffraction was performed before and after HPT processing of the sample; the skutterudite phase was observed as a main phase, but an additional impurity phase (CoSb2) was observed in the HPT-processed sample. Surface morphology was determined by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. In the HP sample, coarse grains with sizes in the range of approximately 100 nm to 300 nm were obtained. They changed to fine grains with a reduction in grain size to 75 nm to 125 nm after HPT due to severe plastic deformation. Crystallographic texture, as measured by x-ray diffraction, indicated strengthening of (112), (102) poles and weakening of the (123) pole of the HPT-processed sample. Raman-active vibrational modes showed a peak position shift towards the lower energy side, indicating softening of the modes after HPT. The distortion of the rectangular Sb-Sb rings leads to broadening of Sb-Sb vibrational modes due to local strain fluctuation. In the HPT process, a significant effect on the shorter Sb-Sb bond was observed as compared with the longer Sb-Sb bond.
