The work reported here is concerned with a detailed thermochemical evaluation of the flaming mode behaviour of a gasifier based stove. Determination of the gas composition over the fuel bed, surface and gas temperatures in the gasification process constitute principal experimental features. A simple atomic balance for the gasification reaction combined with the gas composition from the experiments is used to determine the CH(4) equivalent of higher hydrocarbons and the gasification efficiency (eta g). The components of utilization efficiency, namely, gasification-combustion and heat transfer are explored. Reactive flow computational studies using the measured gas composition over the fuel bed are used to simulate the thermochemical flow field and heat transfer to the vessel; hither-to-ignored vessel size effects in the extraction of heat from the stove are established clearly. The overall flaming mode efficiency of the stove is 50-54%; the convective and radiative components of heat transfer are established to be 45-47 and 5-7% respectively. The efficiency estimates from reacting computational fluid dynamics (RCFD) compare well with experiments. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of coolant gas injection in the stagnation region on the surface heat transfer rates and aerodynamic drag for a large angle blunt body flying at hypersonic Mach number is reported for two stagnation enthalpies. A 60° apex-angle blunt cone model is employed for this purpose with air injection at the nose through a hole of 2mm diameter. The convective surface heating rates and aerodynamic drag are measured simultaneously using surface mounted platinum thin film sensors and internally mounted accelerometer balance system, respectively. About 35–40% reduction in surface heating rates is observed in the vicinity of stagnation region whereas 15–25% reduction in surface heating rates is felt beyond the stagnation region at stagnation enthalpy of 1.6MJ/kg. The aerodynamic drag expressed in terms of drag coefficient is found to increase by 20% due to the air injection.

The precipitation by Relaxed Arakawa-Schubert cumulus parameterization in a General Circulation Model (GCM) is sensitive to the choice of relaxation parameter or specified cloud adjustment time scale. In the present study, we examine sensitivity of simulated precipitation to the choice of cloud adjustment time scale (tau(adj)) over different parts of the tropics using National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Seasonal Forecast Model (SFM) during June-September. The results show that a single specified value of tau(adj) performs best only over a particular region and different values are preferred over different parts of the world. To find a relation between tau(adj) and cloud depth (convective activity) we choose six regions over the tropics. Based on the observed relation between outgoing long-wave radiation and tau(adj), we propose a linear cloud-type dependent relaxation parameter to be used in the model. The simulations over most parts of the tropics show improved results due to this newly formulated cloud-type dependent relaxation parameter.

Current analytical work on the effect of convection and viscoelasticity on the early and late stages of spinodal decomposition is briefly described. In the early stages, the effect of viscoelastic stresses was analysed using a simple Maxwell model for the stress, which was incorporated in the Langevin equation for the momentum field. The viscoelastic stresses are found to enhance the rate of decomposition. In the late stages, the pattern formed depends on the relative composition of the two species. Droplet spinodal decomposition occurs when the concentration of one of the species is small. Convective transport does not have a significant effect on the growth of a single droplet, but it does result in an attractive interaction between non - Brownian droplets which could lead to coalescence. The effect of convective transport for the growth of random interfaces in a near symmetric quench was analysed using an 'area distribution function', which gives the distribution of surface area of the interface in curvature space. It was found that the curvature of the interface decreases proportional to t in the late stages of spinodal decomposition, and the surface area also decreases proportional to t.

Systematic observations of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) to detect elevated aerosol layer were carried out at Manora Peak (29.4 degrees N, 79.5 degrees E, similar to 1960 m a.s.l), Nainital, in the Central Himalayas during January-May 2008. In spite of being a remote, high-altitude site, an elevated aerosol layer is observed quite frequently in the altitude range of 2460-4460 m a.s.l with a width of similar to 2 km during the observation period. We compare these profiles with the vertical profiles observed over Gadanki (13.5 degrees N, 79.2 degrees E, similar to 370 m a.s.l), a tropical station, where no such elevated aerosol layer was found. Further, there is a steady increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) from January (winter) to May (summer) from 0.043 to 0.742, respectively, at Manora Peak, indicating aerosol loading in the atmosphere. Our observations show north-westerly winds indicating the convective lifting of aerosols from far-off regions followed by horizontal long-range transport. The presence of strongly absorbing and scattering aerosols in the elevated layer resulted in a relatively large diurnal mean aerosol surface radiative forcing efficiency (forcing per unit optical depth) of about -65 and -63 W m(-2) and the corresponding mean reduction in the observed net solar flux at the surface (cooling effect) is as high as -22 and -30 W m(-2). The reduction of radiation will heat the lower atmosphere by redistributing the radiation with heating rate of 1.13 and 1.31 K day(-1) for April and May 2008, respectively, in the lower atmosphere.

We report unusual jamming in driven ordered vortex flow in 2H-NbS2. Reinitiating movement in these jammed vortices with a higher driving force and halting it thereafter once again with a reduction in drive leads to a critical behavior centered around the depinning threshold via divergences in the lifetimes of transient states, validating the predictions of a recent simulation study Reichhardt and Olson Reichhardt, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 168301 (2009)] which also pointed out a correspondence between plastic depinning in vortex matter and the notion of random organization proposed Corte et al., Nat. Phys. 4, 420 (2008)] in the context of sheared colloids undergoing diffusive motion.

We address a physics-based simplified analytical formulation of the diffusive electrical resistance ( (Omega)) and Seebeck coefficient () in a PbTe nanowire dominated by acoustic phonon scattering under the presence of a low static longitudinal electric field. The use of a second-order nonparabolic electron energy band structure involving a geometry-dependent band gap has been selected in principle to demonstrate that the electron mean free path (MFP) in such a system can reach as low as about 8 nm at room temperature for a 10-nm-wide PbTe nanowire. This is followed by the formulation of the carrier back-scattering coefficient for determination of (Omega) and as functions of wire dimensions, temperature, and the field, respectively. The present analytical formulation agrees well with the available experimental data and may find extensive use in determination of various electrothermal transport phenomena in PbTe-based one-dimensional electron devices.

Presented is a new method for making composition graded metal-ceramic composites using reactive inter-diffusion between a metal and a complex ceramic. Composition variation in both metal and ceramic phases with distance along the direction of diffusion is achieved. The design criteria for developing such composites are discussed. The system should exhibit extensive solid solubility in both metallic and ceramic phases, a defined gradation in the stabilities of the oxides, and mobility of electrons or holes in the oxide solid solution. The complex ceramic used for making the composite should be polycrystalline with sufficient porosity to accommodate the volume expansion caused by alloy precipitation. An inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation and high processing temperature to facilitate diffusive transport are required. The process is illustrated using the reaction couples Fe-NiTiO3, Fe-(Mg,Co)TiO3 and Fe-(Ni,Co)TiO3.

Aerosol forcing remains a dominant uncertainty in climate studies. The impact of aerosol direct radiative forcing on Indian monsoon is extremely complex and is strongly dependent on the model, aerosol distribution and characteristics specified in the model, modelling strategy employed as well as on spatial and temporal scales. The present study investigates (i) the aerosol direct radiative forcing impact on mean Indian summer monsoon when a combination of quasi-realistic mean annual cycles of scattering and absorbing aerosols derived from an aerosol transport model constrained with satellite observed Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is prescribed, (ii) the dominant feedback mechanism behind the simulated impact of all-aerosol direct radiative forcing on monsoon and (iii) the relative impacts of absorbing and scattering aerosols on mean Indian summer monsoon. We have used CAM3, an atmospheric GCM (AGCM) that has a comprehensive treatment of the aerosol-radiation interaction. This AGCM has been used to perform climate simulations with three different representations of aerosol direct radiative forcing due to the total, scattering aerosols and black carbon aerosols. We have also conducted experiments without any aerosol forcing. Aerosol direct impact due to scattering aerosols causes significant reduction in summer monsoon precipitation over India with a tendency for southward shift of Tropical Convergence Zones (TCZs) over the Indian region. Aerosol forcing reduces surface solar absorption over the primary rainbelt region of India and reduces the surface and lower tropospheric temperatures. Concurrent warming of the lower atmosphere over the warm oceanic region in the south reduces the land-ocean temperature contrast and weakens the monsoon overturning circulation and the advection of moisture into the landmass. This increases atmospheric convective stability, and decreases convection, clouds, precipitation and associated latent heat release. Our analysis reveals a defining negative moisture-advection feedback that acts as an internal damping mechanism spinning down the regional hydrological cycle and leading to significant circulation changes in response to external radiative forcing perturbations. When total aerosol loading (both absorbing and scattering aerosols) is prescribed, dust and black carbon aerosols are found to cause significant atmospheric heating over the monsoon region but the aerosol-induced weakening of meridional lower tropospheric temperature gradient (leading to weaker summer monsoon rainfall) more than offsets the increase in summer-time rainfall resulting from the atmospheric heating effect of absorbing aerosols, leading to a net decrease of summer monsoon rainfall. Further, we have carried out climate simulations with globally constant AODs and also with the constant AODs over the extended Indian region replaced by realistic AODs. Regional aerosol radiative forcing perturbations over the Indian region is found to have impact not only over the region of loading but over remote tropical regions as well. This warrants the need to prescribe realistic aerosol properties in strategic regions such as India in order to accurately assess the aerosol impact.

Combustion instability events in lean premixed combustion systems can cause spatio-temporal variations in unburnt mixture fuel/air ratio. This provides a driving mechanism for heat-release oscillations when they interact with the flame. Several Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approaches to predict the characteristics of these oscillations have been developed in the past. The present paper compares results for flame describing function characteristics determined from a ROM approach based on the level-set method, with corresponding results from detailed, fully compressible reacting flow computations for the same two dimensional slot flame configuration. The comparison between these results is seen to be sensitive to small geometric differences in the shape of the nominally steady flame used in the two computations. When the results are corrected to account for these differences, describing function magnitudes are well predicted for frequencies lesser than and greater than a lower and upper cutoff respectively due to amplification of flame surface wrinkling by the convective Darrieus-Landau (DL) instability. However, good agreement in describing function phase predictions is seen as the ROM captures the transit time of wrinkles through the flame correctly. Also, good agreement is seen for both magnitude and phase of the flame response, for large forcing amplitudes, at frequencies where the DL instability has a minimal influence. Thus, the present ROM can predict flame response as long as the DL instability, caused by gas expansion at the flame front, does not significantly alter flame front perturbation amplitudes as they traverse the flame. A computational tool called ``Directional Diffusion Regulator (DDR)'' is proposed to bring forth real multidimensional physics into the upwind discretization in some numerical schemes of hyperbolic conservation laws. The direction based regulator when used with dimension splitting solvers, is set to moderate the excess multidimensional diffusion and hence cause genuine multidimensional upwinding like effect. The basic idea of this regulator driven method is to retain a full upwind scheme across local discontinuities, with the upwind bias decreasing smoothly to a minimum in the farthest direction. The discontinuous solutions are quantified as gradients and the regulator parameter across a typical finite volume interface or a finite difference interpolation point is formulated based on fractional local maximum gradient in any of the weak solution flow variables (say density, pressure, temperature, Mach number or even wave velocity etc.). DDR is applied to both the non-convective as well as whole unsplit dissipative flux terms of some numerical schemes, mainly of Local Lax-Friedrichs, to solve some benchmark problems describing inviscid compressible flow, shallow water dynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics. The first order solutions consistently improved depending on the extent of grid non-alignment to discontinuities, with the major influence due to regulation of non-convective diffusion. The application is also experimented on schemes such as Roe, Jameson-Schmidt-Turkel and some second order accurate methods. The consistent improvement in accuracy either at moderate or marked levels, for a variety of problems and with increasing grid size, reasonably indicate a scope for DDR as a regular tool to impart genuine multidimensional upwinding effect in a simpler framework. This study uses precipitation estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission to quantify the spatial and temporal scales of northward propagation of convection over the Indian monsoon region during boreal summer. Propagating modes of convective systems in the intraseasonal time scales such as the Madden-Julian oscillation can interact with the intertropical convergence zone and bring active and break spells of the Indian summer monsoon. Wavelet analysis was used to quantify the spatial extent (scale) and center of these propagating convective bands, as well as the time period associated with different spatial scales. Results presented here suggest that during a good monsoon year the spatial scale of this oscillation is about 30 degrees centered around 10 degrees N. During weak monsoon years, the scale of propagation decreases and the center shifts farther south closer to the equator. A strong linear relationship is obtained between the center/scale of convective wave bands and intensity of monsoon precipitation over Indian land on the interannual time scale. Moreover, the spatial scale and its center during the break monsoon were found to be similar to an overall weak monsoon year. Based on this analysis, a new index is proposed to quantify the spatial scales associated with propagating convective bands. This automated wavelet-based technique developed here can be used to study meridional propagation of convection in a large volume of datasets from observations and model simulations. The information so obtained can be related to the interannual and intraseasonal variation of Indian monsoon precipitation.

We employ nanoindentation coupled with electrical contact resistance measurements for simultaneous characterization of the electrical and mechanical behaviors of a cellular assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Experimental results reveal two different responses that correspond to relatively dense and porous regions of the cellular structure. Distinct nonlinear electron transport characteristics are observed, which mainly originate from diffusive conductance in the CNT structure. In the denser region, differential conductance shows asymmetric minima at lower bias, implying that conductivity mainly results from bulk tunneling. However, the porous regions show insignificant differential conduction as opposed to the denser region.

The detection of sound signals in vertebrates involves a complex network of different mechano-sensory elements in the inner ear. An especially important element in this network is the hair bundle, an antenna-like array of stereocilia containing gated ion channels that operate under the control of one or more adaptation motors. Deflections of the hair bundle by sound vibrations or thermal fluctuations transiently open the ion channels, allowing the flow of ions through them, and producing an electrical signal in the process, eventually causing the sensation of hearing. Recent high frequency (0.1-10 kHz) measurements by Kozlov et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 109, 2896 (2012)] of the power spectrum and the mean square displacement of the thermal fluctuations of the hair bundle suggest that in this regime the dynamics of the hair bundle are subdiffusive. This finding has been explained in terms of the simple Brownian motion of a filament connecting neighboring stereocilia (the tip link), which is modeled as a viscoelastic spring. In the present paper, the diffusive anomalies of the hair bundle are ascribed to tip link fluctuations that evolve by fractional Brownian motion, which originates in fractional Gaussian noise and is characterized by a power law memory. The predictions of this model for the power spectrum of the hair bundle and its mean square displacement are consistent with the experimental data and the known properties of the tip link. The vaporization characteristics of pendant droplets of various chemical compositions (like conventional fuels, alternative fuels and nanosuspensions) subjected to convective heating in a laminar air jet have been analyzed. Different heating conditions were achieved by controlling the air temperature and velocity fields around the droplet. A hybrid timescale has been proposed which incorporates the effects of latent heat of vaporization, saturation vapor pressure and thermal diffusivity. This timescale in essence encapsulates the different parameters that influence the droplet vaporization rate. The analysis further permits the evaluation of the effect of various parameters such as surrounding temperature, Reynolds number, far-field vapor presence, impurity content and agglomeration dynamics (nanosuspensions) in the droplet. Flow visualization has been carried out to understand the role of internal recirculation on the vaporization rate. The visualization indicates the presence of a single vortex cell within the droplet on account of the rotation and oscillation of the droplet due to aerodynamic load. External heating induced agglomeration in nanofluids leads to morphological changes during the vaporization process. These morphological changes and alteration in vaporization behavior have been assessed using high speed imaging of the diameter regression and Scanning Electron Microscopy images of the resultant precipitate.
