Numerical results are presented for the free-convection boundary-layer equations of the Ostwald de-Waele non-Newtonian power-law type fluids near a three-dimensional (3-D) stagnation point of attachment on an isothermal surface. The existence of dual solutions that are three-dimensional in nature have been verified by means of a numerical procedure. An asymptotic solution for very large Prandtl numbers has also been derived. Solutions are presented for a range of values of the geometric curvature parameter c, the power-law index n, and the Prandtl number Pr.

Although the sunspots migrate towards the equator, the large-scale weak diffuse magnetic fields of the Sun migrate poleward with the solar cycle, the polar field reversing at the time of the sunspot maxima. We apply the vector model of Dikpati and Choudhuri (1994, Paper I) to fit these observations. The dynamo layer at the base of the convection zone is taken to be the source of the diffuse field, which is then evolved in the convection zone subject to meridional circulation and turbulent diffusion. We find that the longitudinally averaged observational data can be fitted reasonably well both for positive and negative values of the alpha-effect by adjusting the subsurface meridional flow suitably. The model will be extended in a future paper to include the decay of active regions as an extra source of the diffuse field, which may be necessary to explain the probable phase lag between B-tau and B-phi at lower latitudes.

Surface melting by a stationary, pulsed laser has been modelled by the finite element method. The role of the surface tension driven convection is investigated in detail. Numerical results are presented for a triangular laser pulse of durations 10, 50 and 200 ms. Though the magnitude of the velocity is high due to the surface tension forces, the present results indicate that a finite time is required for convection to affect the temperature distribution within the melt pool. The effect of convection is very significant for pulse durations longer than 10 ms.

We show that meridional circulation can have a profound influence on dynamo models for the solar cycle. Motivated by the observed tilt angles of sunspot groups we assume that the generation of the poloidal field takes place near the surface, while a shear layer of radial differential rotation produces the toroidal field at the bottom of the convection zone. Both layers are coupled by a circulation with a poleward directed flow in the upper part and an equatorward flow in the deep layers of the convection zone. The circulation forces the toroidal field belts (which are responsible for the surface activity) to move equatorward. This leads to butterfly diagrams in qualitative agreement with the observations, even if the dynamo wave would propagate poleward in the absence of circulation. This result opens the possibility to construct models for the solar cycle which are based on observational data (tilt angles, differential rotation, and meridional circulation).

The flow and heat transfer characteristics of a second-order fluid over a vertical wedge with buoyancy forces have been analysed. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations governing the nonsimilar mixed convection flow have been solved numerically using Keller box method. The effects of the buoyancy parameter, viscoelastic parameter, mass transfer parameter, pressure gradient parameter, Prandtl number and viscous dissipation parameter on the skin friction and heat transfer have been examined in detail. Particular cases of the present results match exactly with those available in the literature.

Aim of the study: The medicinal plants are integral source of easily available remedy used in rural healthcare system. This study was conducted among three major ethnic groups namely the Nocte, the Nyishi and the Adi in the Eastern Himalayan region of Arunachal Pradesh to evaluate their comparative knowledge on medicinal plants. Materials and methods: The three remote districts of Arunachal Pradesh namely the Tirap, the Dibang Valley and the Papum Pare were surveyed through interviewing of randomly selected 237 participants using semi-structured questionnaire and regular field visits to selected districts. Results: We recorded the traditional use of 74 medicinal plants species belonging to 41 taxonomic plant families used for treating a total of 25 different diseases/ailments. The informant consensus factor (ICF) values demonstrated that local people tend to agree more with each other in terms of the plants used to treat malaria (0.71), jaundice (0.62), urological problems (0.56), dermatological disorders (0.45), pain (0.30), and respiratory disorder (0.33), and while the general health (0.15) and gastro-intestinal disorders category (0.28) were found low ICF values. Conclusion: Of the total 74 species recorded, the highest number of medicinal plants (36 species) was reported from the Adi of Lower Dibang Valley followed by the Nocte of the Tirap (25 species) and the Nyishi ethnic groups of Papum Pare districts (13 species). In the present study, we found that the men, elder people and illiterate ones had better knowledge on medicinal plants as compared to women, younger and literate people. Findings of this documentation study can be used as an ethnopharmacological basis for selecting plants for future phytochemical and pharmaceutical studies. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The problem of mixed convection from horizontal surfaces in a porous medium saturated with a power-law-type non-Newtonian fluid is investigated. The transformed conservation laws are solved numerically for the case of variable wall hear pur conditions. Results for the details of the velocity and temperature fields as well as the Nusselt number have been presented. The viscosity index ranged from 0.5-1.5.

Observations of surface flow patterns of steel and aluminum GTAW pools have been made using a pulsed laser visualization system. The weld pool convection is found to be three-dimensional with the azimuthal circulation depending on the location of the clamp with respect to the torch. Oscillation of steel pools and undulating motion in aluminum weld pools are also observed even with steady process parameters. Current axisymmetric numerical models are unable to explain such phenomena. A three-dimensional computational study is carried out in this study to explain the rotational flow in aluminum weld pools.

A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of mixed convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along horizontal surfaces with variable heat flux distribution. The mixed convection regime is divided into two regions, namely, the forced convection dominated regime and the free convection dominated regime. The two solutions are matched. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate.

In this paper, the role of melt convection on the performance of heat sinks with phase change material (PCM) is investigated numerically. The heat sink consists of aluminum plate fins embedded in PCM, and is subjected to heat flux supplied from the bottom. A single-domain enthalpy-based CFD model is developed, which is capable of simulating the phase change process and the associated melt convection. The CFD model is coupled with a genetic algorithm for carrying out the optimization. Two cases are considered, namely, one without melt convection (i.e., conduction heat transfer analysis), and the other with convection. It is found that the geometrical optimizations of heat sinks are different for the two cases, indicating the importance of melt convection in the design of heat sinks with PCMs. In the case of conduction analysis, the optimum width of half fin (i.e., sum of half pitch and half fin thickness) is a constant, which is in good agreement with results reported in the literature. On the other hand, if melt convection is considered, the optimum half fin width depends on the effective thermal diffusivity due to conduction and convection. With melt convection, the optimized design results in a significant improvement of operational time.

Dikpati and Choudhuri (1993, 1995) developed a model for the poleward migration of the weak diffuse magnetic field on the Sun's surface. This field was identified with the poloidal component produced by the solar dynamo operating at the base of the convection zone, and its evolution was studied by considering the effects of meridional circulation and turbulent diffusion. The earlier model is extended in this paper by incorporating the flux from, the decay of tilted active regions near the solar surface as an additional source of the poloidal field. This extended model can now explain various low-latitude features in the time-latitude diagram of the weak diffuse fields. These low-latitude features could not be accounted for in the earlier model, which was very successful in modeling the behavior at high latitudes. The time-latitude diagrams show that regions of a particular polarity often have 'tongues' of opposite polarity. Such tongues can be produced in the theoretical model by incorporating fluctuations in the source term arising out of the decaying active regions.

Tensile tests in the temperature range 298 to 873 K have been performed on 2.25Cr-1Mo base metal and simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) structures of its weld joint, namely coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite and intercritical structure. Tensile flow behaviour of all the microstructural conditions could be adequately described by the Hollomon equation (sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1)) at higher (> 623 K) temperatures. Deviation from the Hollomon equation was observed at low strains and lower (< 623 K) temperatures. The Ludwigson modification of Hollomon's equation, sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1) + exp (K-2 + n(2) epsilon), was found to describe the flow curve. In general, the flow parameters n(1), K-1, n(2) and K-2 were found to decrease with increase in temperature except in the intermediate temperature range (423 to 623 K). Peaks/plateaus were observed in their variation with temperature in the intermediate temperature range coinciding with the occurrence of serrated flow in the load-elongation curve. The n(1) Value increased and the K-1 value decreased with the type of microstructure in the order: coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite, base metal and intercritical structure. The variation of nl with microstructure has been rationalized on the basis of mean free path (MFP) of dislocations which is directly related to the inter-particle spacing. Larger MFP of dislocations lead to higher strain hardening exponents n(1).

A combination of numerical and analytical techniques is used to analyse the effect of magnetic field and encapsulated layer on the onset of oscillatory Marangoni instability in a two layer system. Oscillatory Marangoni instability is possible for a deformed free surface only when the system is heated from above. It is observed that the existence of a second layer has a positive effect on Marangoni overstability with magnetic field whereas it has an opposite effect without magnetic field.

Often, wrong conclusions about the mobilities of species are drawn from the position of the Kirkendall marker plane or voids in the interdiffusion zone. To clarify, I have discussed the growth mechanism of the phases and the position of the marker plane depending on the relative mobilities of the species. The formation of different kinds of voids in the interdiffusion zone is discussed. Further, the microstructure that could be found because of the Kirkendall effect is also explained.
